Loved her class so much. She is a great professor: funny, engaging and kind. However, the projects and exams make this class quite work heavy and difficult. So I would highly suggest taking the lectures and readings seriously from the start.
Good professor, better than CS400. Group Projects are time consuming but not that bad, tests are pretty easy. Lectures are recorded but TopHat participation in class is mandatory.
Hobbes is a good lecturer and very knowledgeable and caring, but the lectures got to be quite slow, and most of the time was spent writing testers. Codio was also a horrible textbook rife with errors. The grading was very flexible, but the projects were often unnecessarily time-consuming.
Super kind and awesome professor. Decent lectures, attendance required. Course has a flexibility policy so your grade won't tank from just one F. Most negative things one could say about the class would be about the class or its format, not the professor themself. However, the mid-year project was poorly planned, presumably by multiple instructors.
Hobbes is a good prof, but her lectures are pretty slow for students who know what they are doing. If you enjoy sitting and listening in a relaxed environment, then she can be really helpful and you will not struggle. The textbook (Codio) that they switched to this semester had lots of mistakes and was clearly generated mostly by ChatGPT.
Hobbes is fantastic! They are great especially for freshmen getting used to college, you'll always have a laugh in lecture. Hobbes never misses a question and her TA team is SO SO SO helpful, office hours are a LIFE SAVER! The course is only really difficult during recursion, exams are fairly ez if you understand concepts at their core, hw light
Good teacher. The overall course is pretty easy. The projects take a lot of time but if you put in the time they aren't that bad. Tests are kind of difficult especially having to write code on paper. My only complaint specific to her teaching style is that the lecture slides are very light on information which makes it hard to skim later on.
The lectures are boring and entirely unnecessary, but that's to be expected. She gives off a passive-aggressive attitude sometimes, but I think that's just because she's tired after helping out a thousand students, so it makes sense. She's fun, the class is super easy as long as you actually do the homework.
Great professor, lectures are clear and easy to understand. Projects take up a lot of time but are very rewarding in the end.
Good professor, lectures were easy to understand although could be boring at times
Awesome professor. Class is a lot of work but that's to be expected with any proffesor. Only complaint is MAYBE lectures are a little slow but if that's the only complaint than you're a great instructor. 10/10 professor.
hobbes legoat
Hobbes is so funny and caring and her lectures are so fun.
She is a very knowledgeable professor, and it shows in how she teaches.
Fair grading, excellent lecturer
Excellent professor!
Professor is exceptional, especially for computer science. Great to see diverse representation in teaching faculty. Coursework is the same regardless of professor for CS300, lectures are livestreamed and recorded and available to anyone taking cs300. Projects are somewhat time consuming, but nothing insane. Tests are relatively easy. I love Hobbes!
Professor Hobbes was my best professor for my first semester as a freshman. Her lectures are engaging and easy to follow, and she livestreams them if you can't physically attend. A decent amount of homework but overall everything is easy to work with if you're into CS.
She is a good lecturer and has good pace when lecturing (probably slow for some people). For me, I feel the content of the course is a little bit hard for new java learners. Otherwise this would be an easy course.
She's a good lecturer but you could learn most of the material from zybooks alone (typical for CS classes). The most exciting part of class was seeing what awesome crazy shoes she chose to wear that day.
Her lectures are extremely slow. She just talks so slowly. But they aren't bad, I usually got more out of the ZyBooks though. At the end of the semester, she was very vague and unclear about the grading policies after making the tests in person for the first time and chose to not curve even tho the average was like 70. many students were upset.
Very engaging lecturer. Easily one of the most likeable professors I've had. Tests were very fair. If you study well, they shouldn't be a problem. Some projects were a breeze, others were extremely hard, and it was pretty unpredictable from week to week. One of my only complaints with her lectures is they are a bit too slow.
Hobbes was a good lecturer. Unfortunately, when I reached out with concerns about my ADHD, they were very rude and condescending. The nail in the coffin for me was when my grade in canvas said I had a B (which I wanted), but the final grade got reported as a BC. They were unhelpful and rude. They seemed cool otherwise, but was really argumentative.
Hobbes is a great professor, however not at fault of her own there isn't too much of a point in going to lectures. ZyBooks and just doing the coding projects are significantly better ways to learn the material. Content is definitely meant to be learned at your own pace, not in lecture
Hobbes had perhaps the most well-structured course I have ever taken. Lectures were organized and easy to understand, weekly projects were crystal clear. And her lecturing style is thoroughly engaging without being overly enthusiastic, somehow. Knows the material in and out. Her and the TAs were very quick to respond to student questions on Piazza.
Hobbes Legault is a great lecturer and very good at running the class. CS300 projects can take a long time, but they are well organized and it is clear what you are creating/supposed to be doing. Enjoy CS300 while you can because CS400 is the complete opposite. Overall great professor and solid class.
Actual goat. I always felt the class was going smoothly, but I realize it 10 times more now. In comparison to the sequel (cs400), cs300 was waaaay better organized and taught. The course was pretty rigorous in my opinion, but with Hobbes it seemed a lot more chill. If you have the opportunity of taking cs300, do so, and enjoy it while it lasts.
Angel
I can honestly say that I didn't attend a single lecture, but she still does a good job of them. You learn 99% of the information via Zybooks, but I skipped around through the lecture videos before the exams. She's funny and engaging, and definitely the best CS300 prof. The class was a solid intro, and not hard if you try on the projects.
The lectures can be attended virtually and are recorded, and the attendance questions are only due before the next lecture, meaning one could get by just fine never actually attending a lecture. Lectures were very clear making it easy to take good notes. Beware of a heavy homework load: the homework assignments were sometimes tough.
Hobbes is quite clear, and I would go as far as to say that with her, you probably have the best understanding of the CS300 course
Amazing lectures. Professor was entertaining and informative. Every lecture was a blast. Although attendance isn't mandatory, there are participation questions due after every lecture.
Professor Hobbes is an amazing lecturer and has top hat for attendance. Lots of projects and quizzes/exams are easy if you attend lecture and read textbook.
They have made the assignments for CS300 progressively harder every semester. Hobbes has had great reviews in the past, but here lectures just don't have the depth needed to finish the out of class work. Her lectures feel very surface level. I personally found Mark Mansi's recordings throughout the semester more resourceful.
Hobbes did a great job breaking down concepts in cs300 and prepared me for the projects very well
Her lectures are way easier than what's expected on the homework and projects. Nice prof and I appreciate that she tries to keep the students entertained, but I felt that the material in class never prepared me for the assignments.
i love her
Hobbes is very good and really cares about students. Assignments are very interesting and overall this class was really great. Make sure you start projects early and complete everything and you should get an A.
Overrated but still alright.
hobby lobby!
Amazing professor. Lectures are entertaining and easy to understand, they make this class extremely manageable. The projects can be long and the zybooks can be tedious, but overall I learned a ton in this class and much of that was due to Hobbes' abilities as a teacher. Definitely take this class with her if you get the chance and go to lecture.
I love her class.
The best professor in the CS department. Hands down. Also, likes Pokemon.
Explains concepts pretty well. Would recommend to cs majors who are sorta new to coding
Hobbes is great. If you have the choice to have her has a professor, then DO IT. Coursework consists of weekly programming assignments, quizzes, and cumulative quizzes (midterms). Most of the projects are parter optional so if you have a COMPETENT friend then nice. If you don't, FIND ONE. Would take another course by her
Hobbes is a great professor for CS and she has a really energetic and fun personality! Lectures are really important as they help understand the content. There's either a long programming assignment or a cumulative test given every single week. Homework is mainly an interactive textbook. Office hours are key for success in CS300 with her!
Amazing and caring professor. I really feel better after talking to her about my grades and what I can do to improve. Bless her and allowing us to do partner projects. They lightened the workload and was better to understand. Very accommodating with extensions due to Covid or other problems. 10/10.
Fun and engaging lecturer. Explains topics in ways that everyone can understand and walks us through everything. It's a time-consuming class but they make lectures enjoyable & understandable. Projects are vague at times, but professors, TAs, and even fellow students are extremely useful on Piazza by answering all questions! Thankful they're my prof
Hobbes is a fantastic lecturer. Very clear, very fun, very relatable. I would HIGHLY recommend Hobbes if you can pick her as your professor.
u/hobbes is very cool
Amazing lecturer! Very passionate and talks slow. Lectures were posted online so you could rewatch/attend on your own time. Interacted with students on Discord and Piazza and was always easy to reach. Very encouraging and made entertaining lectures.
Their (she/they pronouns!!) lectures were amazing while the class mainly takes from the ZyBooks online interactive textbook we're required to buy. Humorous, fun, lovely lectures, please attend them and don't skip! Graded on 4 midterms (no finals), best 9/10 programming projects, best quiz per biweekly unit (x5), participation (asynch possible).
I wasn't even in Professor Hobbes's class this semester, but my own professor was so bad that I watched all of her videotaped lectures and she legit saved my grade in this class! She goes into depth for all of the topics in the curriculum but also makes the content easy to understand and interesting. She's super chill and personable too.
hobbes is a greater lecturer and highly charismatic and just has all around good vibes. Take CS300 with her, you really won't regret it.
The best teacher out of the entire CS department, would love to take more courses taught by her. Her lectures are interesting and the programs she wrote are easily understandable and straight forward. Even if you can't enroll in her class, go to her lectures/watch her recorded videos.
An excellent professor, she constantly interacts with her students and is always willing to help if you ask. She clearly knows the content extensively and is willing to always clarify details for her students. Programming assignments are a bit vague at times, but she is very easy to access and get help from.
Lectures are really engaging and material is taught in an easy-to-learn manner. Hobbes is a very engaging instructor
The best computer science professor.
Awesome professor!!
You can't do better than Hobbes. She legitimately delivers some of the best lectures I've ever seen - not only does she teach the concepts, she provides motivation for why they exist and how they're useful for solving problems. Wish I could take every CS class with her.
She was a good lecturer. Her slide shows where not overly detailed but she did lots of coding examples to better explane the topics. Occasionaly went on tangents about random stuff (pokemon).
Nice prof for CS300. Easily reachable by office hours and emails. Projects are useful. Amazing lectures.
Hobbes is one of my favorite CS professors. She's an amazing teacher and obviously cares about her students. The class is project-heavy and exams can be tricky, but Hobbes makes the experience less painful. Definitely recommend her!
LeGault is goated, best cs professor you will probably ever have. Her lectures go hand in hand with what you're working on outside of class. Truly phenominal, gem of the CS depot
CS 300 takes a lot of time but Hobbes is a great professor at explaining things and teaching in general
Hobbes is a really caring and genuine professor, a rare find in the CS department. Her projects are really engaging and the course can be solely learned through the weekly zyBooks. I didn't find much to gain from lectures but if needed it is fair review. She's just mad chill across the board.
Hobbes is super nice and understanding, but her lectures don't get through all the information, and you end up using the online textbook to learn most of the stuff.
Pretty easy to understand in lectures and stuff, just make sure you're paying attention in class and you'll be fine
Extremely engaging and very accessible. Must take her lecture if you are taking 300.
She cool. Gem in the CS depo, take her class over mouna.
If youre in CS, youre going to take this class, and Hobbes is your best bet. Lectures arent out-of-this-world engaging or anything but almost always enjoyable thanks to the sense of humor she embeds in her lecturing. The class materials are well organized, and shes always happy to talk with people outside of class. Very accommodating re COVID.
Hobbes is a really fun person and an engaging lecturer. The projects were sometimes really easy and sometimes really hard so its better to start early just in case. I'd say that you don't even really need to take cs200 unless you're a complete beginner. They cover a lot of basics at the beginning.
Lectures don' just reiterate textbook content, she adds her own nuanced view to concepts. Grading criteria is INCREDIBLY well defined. Projects (although long) teach content well. Don't have to go to lecture because all lectures and code are posted on canvas. If you didn't take programming 1 as a prereq get ready to teach yourself basic java
Hobbes is a decent professor in terms of being understanding and relatable, but I wouldn't say she is an excellent instructor. Everyone likes her because she's fun and charismatic, but I did not learn much in lecture besides "it's early, caffeine hasn't kicked in." Her slides are useless, but you get access to Mouna's slides which are a lot better.
Hobbes was definitely the highlight of my first semester of college. She was funny and kept the lectures engaging. When I first walked into class, I had forgotten most of the Java that I learned in high school and so the first project was really tough. But resources are there. Office hours are in person and online, and so are the lectures
Hobbes is one of the best CS instructors in the department due to her fun lectures and accessibility through several different channels outside of class. The class however is not what was expected as we spent the first two months going over the basics of object-oriented programming which was supposed to be a prerequisite for the course.
Hobbes is funny, caring, and very helpful! Definitely learned a lot this semester thanks to her.
Hands down one of the best out there. If you're looking for a CS instructor, look no further!
Hobbes clearly cares about the success of her students. She was always available for questions etc, and even joined the CS discord to answer any questions. She put a lot of work into her short lecture videos, and was overall a great professor.
One of the coolest and most approachable professors I have had. She is not condescending when you have questions like other professors, she really wants to help.
Hobbes is probably the coolest prof I've met. She's always willing to talk about anything and memes in the class discord. She's really accessible and always willing to help students out thinking through the programming assignments. I'm so grateful I was able to have her as one of my profs, and I'm impressed at how organized the online class was.
Maybe Hobbes is an okay prof in person but this class was terrible online. Projects always needed corrections. 30 min of lectures were posted a week without enough detail for assignments. Wasn't accessible outside "class". Office hours were replaced by a text channel in Slack where she would tell you to ask on Piazza, if you got a reply at all.
Hobbes is the best professor to take for 300. The class is pretty difficult, but she is easily accessible outside of class if you need help. If you're unsure about taking her class, DO IT!
She is very accessible outside class, through discord, Slack, or other massaging apps. The lectures were good. There was a lot of work though (weekly homework and quizzes). If you watch the lectures and massage her when you need help, you can easily get an A.
Hobbes was very cool because she let us direct message her via slack which was a huge help and was always patient. Sometime she gave witty answers but to be expected from a professor
I had previous programming experience so the class for myself was an easy A however it may differ if you have less experience and I know people who did struggle
