Very nice professor but lectures are all over the place and not particularly useful. You could easily not go to any lectures and still get an A. Definitely important to read at least some of the books or essays though. Class is very very easy (especially the quiz and final). Attendance is not required.

Professor Swan is such a kind and genuine person and is very passionate about the subject she teaches. Assignments were very engaging and easy to complete, lectures were interesting, and assessments were very fair (and easy). I would highly recommend taking any class with Professor Swan.

Dr Swan is super engaging and cares a lot about her students. Her class was a nice break from stress in the day, and she really changed the way I think about the environment. The readings are interesting and there is only one exam that is pretty straightforward. Would definitely take again!

Professor Swan is a great professor! She is so upbeat and happy all the time. She is fun to be around and her class felt like a nice relaxing break in the day. As for the class, there are four assignments in the semester and discussion posts every week. Other than that, there is only reading for homework. Class was interesting too.

If you have a chance to take a class with Professor Swan, please do so. She only assigned a handful of poems to read each week, and we got to do some cool things like taking walks, visiting the greenhouse, and touring a taxidermy museum. It is very easy to get an A in this class, but it's one where you feel inspired to engage and do the work.

Best professor at UW-Madison with no doubt. Love going to her lecture

Wonderful teacher, creates a great learning environment. I've never enjoyed a class so much. Take anything she teaches.

You genuinely did not need to go to lecture to get a good grade in this class. The assignments and quizzes were super easy and fun. I only went to lecture because Professor Swan is extremely interesting and fun to listen to. She is truly a gem.

Took English100 with Swan and she made it easygoing and enjoyable

Dr. Swan is one of the best professors I've had at UW. She cares so deeply about her students and is one of the kindest people I've ever met. The workload was very reasonable, 1 weekly reading response, 1 discussion post, 1 easy group presentation, and a poem written at the end of the class. I would recommend this class to anyone and everyone.

Professor Swan cares deeply about every one of her students and their success in her class. She pushes you to think about the material and creates meaningful conversations but recognizes the different backgrounds of her students and the experience levels they may have. Her class was extremely thought provoking.

Professor Swan. 10/10. First-year & definitely taking another course of hers! She is amazing, makes class fun and interacts with students on how they are doing in class, or in life too. She does talk a lot, but it's mainly about her interesting life and I love it! Would recommend to anyone because even the other classmates are cool, well mines are.

I am a first-year student and have Dr. Heather Swan for English 100. She is amazing; she truly values and cares about her students - I couldn't say the same for other professors. Lectures are fun and easy. Sometimes she can come off unorganized and all over the place but this has never caused an issue. I would definitley reccomend Dr. Swan!

Professor Swan is amazing! I would definitely recommend! She is knowledgeable, caring, and engaging. She genuinely values each of her students, which is uncommon at UW. She has unique perspectives and challenges you to 'dig deeper.' She can sometimes be a bit unorganized or frazzled, but this is not an issue. Amazing human and instructor!

Dr. Swan is the best!! As a stem student with a heavy course load last semester I wasn't able to get through every single reading and still easily finished with an A. She cares deeply for her students and makes lectures so enjoyable. Discussion did not even relate to the readings but it could have just been my TA in particular.

I loved professor Swan's class. As a stem major, I usually hate English class but she made it enjoyable. She couldn't have been nicer and really cares for her students!

Amazing professor. Very engaging and genuinely cares for student success. She's pretty cool. There's one quiz mid-semester (10% of grade) and the final (20% of grade), neither of them are difficult as long as you do the readings. There are also two papers (20% each) and 5 easy assignments. Take this class! It's fun!

The lectures are fun, and often just turn into a fun discussion about the reading, class was really easy and she was super lenient on grading.

Prof. Swan teaches in a way that makes students genuinely want to learn. She is very passionate about her teachings. Synchronous time included open class discussions about the readings. I am friends with several classmates despite it being an online summer course. Inspired me to think critically about the ways I communicate environmental concerns.

Professor Swan is one of the kindest people I have ever met. It is very apparent she cares deeply about her students and is incredibly encouraging and understanding. English 533 is quite easy and grades are dependent upon participation. I would recommend taking a class with professor Swan if you get the chance, totally worth it.

My favorite Professor ever. She truly cares about her students and makes time during each class to ask students how they are doing. Her class is not hard, you just need to do the work. Seriously the best

Literally the best professor Ive ever had. Love this woman because she clearly shows that she cares about her students. If you have the chance to take her DO IT! I have never been an English person, but this class is my favorite because of how inviting it is to go to class.

One of the most wonderful professors I've ever had. She is so friendly and caring and her lectures are actually very interesting. The work is very easy as long as you are passionate about the content. I highly recommend anyone take this class.

She is the nicest professor I know. You can not go wrong with her. Everyone needs someone like her in their lives. Soooooooooooooooooooooooo nice! I'm gonna miss her... ;-;

This class was super fun and interesting. Lots of cool readings. Class is heavily focused on discussion but not in a really stressful way, she really does just want to hear what people thought about the readings. She's extremely kind and understanding to all of the students. Would 10/10 rec her and her classes and wish I could take more.

Dr. Swan is the best professor! I had her for English 153 and English 100 this semester and I loved attending her classes. She is so thoughtful and caring! She genuinely wants the best for her students and doesn't want them to be stressed out from her courses. Both courses were enjoyable and reasonable in terms of work. I would highly recommend her

Professor Swan is very caring and you can tell she is passionate about the material she teaches. I was not looking forward to taking an English class but I thoroughly enjoyed this class and the readings. If you need a literature class, I would 10/10 recommend ENGL153 with Professor Swan!

Professor Swan is so caring and wants her students to succeed! Her lectures were really interesting and you can tell she really cares about the material she's teaching. The class was very organized and the readings were interesting!

Dr. Swan is one of the greatest professors I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. She genuinely cares about her students and remembers them. I went to office hours twice and she recognized me on the street about a year later and we had a very nice and genuine conversation. Literally one of the greatest people on the planet.

Prof. Swan is great! You can tell she really cares about the topics and she wants students to learn. She makes the class all about your own interpretation, not whether you answer is right or wrong. I took the class over the summer and there was a decent amount of reading but as long as you read you can get an A.

Dr. Swan is incredible. If you ever have the chance to take a class with her, DO IT. She might go down as my favorite professor. Awesome class, interesting topics, and an open space to portray opinions and thoughts.

I enjoyed taking Professor Swan's class. It was good and interesting. The final quiz was a little tricky since it was based on the specific details you had to remember from the readings. Two main papers were required and you need to do well on those otherwise it will affect your grade. Also, make sure you get a good TA. This is not an EASY class!

I didn't attend every lecture for this class (as they honestly are not necessary to get a good grade in this class). However, for every lecture I did attend, I left with a smile on my face. Professor Swan is the kindest, coolest, and most genuine professor I have ever had and I would recommend her class to anyone.

Professor Swan was the best English professor I have ever had. I would recommend taking her section of any class. She wants her students to succeed and understands that we have lives outside of class and was just someone to talk to if you had a hard day. I loved her!!

Dr. Swan is an excellent professor. She is an extremely caring, kind, and sensitive professors. She cares about the wellbeing and success of each of her students. I really like her approach of mindfulness and her assignments. Not a lot of homework. Great class discussions that spark amazing conversations that extend outside of the classroom.

Heather is super nice and makes it obvious that she is passionate about the subjects of english and environmental studies. Midterm and final exams were super easy, just make sure to do well on the two assigned papers. Sometimes the lectures seemed rushed, but it wasn't one of those classes where if you missed something it mattered a lot.

No lecture slides provided. Then You have to take notes for everything.

Her lectures were really boring, especially when it's early morning, but she clearly cared a lot about the environment and her students. As long as you do a good chunk of the readings and put in a decent amount of effort on the projects/papers, you should get an A.

Her lectures were really boring but she's a really nice person who clearly cares about the environment. As long as you write 2 half decent papers, you should have no issue passing. I only read 1/7 books and I got an A. The final was ridiculously easy.

Lectures were kind of all over the place, but Heather is very kind and cares a lot about the environment. Some fun projects throughout the semester helped make the class more enjoyable without being too much work. Make sure you can keep up with at least some of the many books read for the class.

Dr. Swan is an amazing, down-to-earth english teacher! The first half of the class is basically reading short articles/stories and writing a page-long response that you share in class the next day. The second half is two projects. The first is "Making the Invisible Visible" and the second is a 7-10 page research paper on a topic of your choice.

Dr. Swan is such an inspiring, caring, and kind professor. The class is not hard, as long as you complete the readings and show up to lecture you should pass without a problem. You only write two papers in this class, so not bad at all!

Dr. Swan is absolutely deserving of the title "best professor I've ever had". She has a deep passion for the environment and the arts, and made it her priority that her students left the room inspired to think. Her classroom and teaching style has been a creative outlet for me, and her humble nature has allowed me to reflect on my thoughts/actions.

Swan does not grade you on participation but you will end up having to participate each class. She will ask a question and then have everyone answer around the circle. Small class but she grades so easily I got an A on everything.

She is a very friendly person who loves English and has a tendency to go off on tangents during lectures. Not a difficult course just a lot of reading, 2 papers, midterm, and final.

Dr. Swan is such a brilliant woman who is incredibly passionate about her profession and very invested in her students. She helped me become a better creative writer and I actually looked forward to her lectures!

Dr. Swan was amazing! Loved having her, I actually looked forward to her lectures.

Heather was by far my favorite professor this year! She is so caring about each of her students and tries to make everything clear. She has so many amazing stories and she will help you with whatever you need, whether thats about class or not! I definitely recommend taking a class with her! She is so great!

Heather is an amazing professor and she really makes this class enjoyable!

Professor Swan was such a great professor to learn from this semester. I am not a great writer, but she helped me by providing great and helpful feedback. I wasn't a big writer before, but she has made me see writing as a whole new outlet. It was a great class & I would recommend it to everyone.

dr. swan is the most adorable woman and the best professor ever!!

Professor Swan was my favorite teacher that I have ever had. She is very compassionate and genuinely cares about all of her students. She is a very lenient grader and wants all of her students to succeed. In addition, she does not assign any busy work and all of the reading were very interesting.

Amazing instructor. Gives lots of feed back and really cares about each student. Not much work compared to other classes, but the work you do helps you a lot as a writer. If you feel bad about your writing before you start, you won't by the end of semester.

Heather Swan is very inspirational, she taught me a different way to see the world. You do have a few writing assignments but it is typically for a Comm A class. She makes class interesting and fun, and makes you enjoy writing and being creative.

Professor Swan was one of the best profs I've had during my time at UW. Her enthusiasm for the material is palpable. The books are interesting and the discussion engaging, and the projects are all really interesting/easy. The "quiz" in November was a gimme and the final was really easy as well.

Heather Swan is such a fantastic woman. She knows how to get on the students' level, and her classes are always engaging and interesting. She listens to the students' take in assigned reading, accepting their opinions and points of view. Unfortunately she will not be returning to UW-Madison in the upcoming semester, but she was a great professor.

While the class was not overly interesting, though not bad, she made the class interesting by giving unique perspectives. For the most part, the readings were interesting but could be long. For many of the readings I just used Sparknotes and it was sufficient. If you just show up to discussion and participate, this class will be a breeze.

Dr. Swan was one of my favorite professors I have ever had. She likes to get to know all of her students and is regularly available for help outside of class. Definitely would recommend.

I really enjoyed her lectures. She is a very interesting, funny, passionate, friendly person. Heather really cares about her students and is passionate about her work. I would definitely take another one of her classes, not because it was easy, but because I really enjoyed her class.

Had to take a lit so environmental lit sounded the least challenging. Professor Swan cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. She started with attendance every day and you got claps if you came and it didn't matter if you were there. This is THE class to take if you need a lit

Professor Swan was an inspiration. I would take any class that she teaches. I am a science major, so I dreaded taking an english class. She made it interesting and I loved going to lecture. She can get a little side tracked during lecture, but it is always entertaining. Make sure to read the books assigned (great books) and TAs are very helpful.

Easiest English class I have ever taken. Make sure to somewhat read the books assigned, and the TA's are always pretty helpful. It's okay to skip lecture once in a while, but just get the notes from somebody.

Awesome prof, very enthusiastic.

Heather is the nicest, sweetest professor you will ever have. She cares about each student in her class and wants everyone to succeed. She is a little disorganized, but she's still awesome!

Heather is very helpful, cheerful, and an all over fantastic professor. She genuinely cares about every student and the class was very easy!

I hated english going into this class. Heather made it awesome. Everything we read was interesting. Only two papers and a final project that could be a powerpoint or presentation if you wanted it to be! Couldn't imagine a better teacher. So nice, so approachable, so welcoming to ideas. She's leaving UW, but hopefully she'll be back in the future :)
