Prof. Brighouse is amazing at his job. He makes philosophy an intriguing topic and does not dissuade you from any opinions you may have, just cares about if you used critical thinking skills. Overall, the class is not too difficult, and do not have to go to lecture/discussion to succeed. I do recommend going though, because Brighouse is really good

Favorite class I've ever taken at UW Madison. Lectures are engaging, though he gets off topic often. Lecture is more like a discussion and much of the time the students are doing most of the talking. 2 exams, 2 essays, and weekly discussion posts. Every single paper/topic is interesting and all views are respected in the class. Highly recommend!

Dr. Brighouse is hilarious and covers material thoroughly without taking a clear side. He plays devil's advocate when students don't take a position, and is respectful of all views. I took this class as my only space for an elective, and def recommend you take it, even if on the fence. Best class I have taken at UW, and change your worldview.

Brighouse is amazing, I loved this class. Lectures are more like discussions and it is a great atmosphere. Be sure to do the assigned readings before class so you understand the discussion. The more you put into this class the more your will get out of it.

Probably the best professor I've ever had. Lecture is extremely interesting, he engages with students, and encourages discussion. Such a great course!!

Harry is literally the best professor I have had at Madison. In 555, the majority of lectures were really more of debates/discussions about reading material but your opinion. Lots of reading but honestly a lot of the material is interesting enough that it isn't unbearable. 10000000% recommend Harry!!

He is such a gem! There are few professors at UW-Madison who care more about the success of his students than him. He really invests the time to make sure students feel comfortable in class and that they're actually learning.

He is the best professor Ive ever had. He genuinely cares for his students and is accepting of all views. He is huge on respect during class discussions, and I give him my highest recommendation.

The most caring professor at UW.

Prof Brighouse is an awesome teacher. Makes philosophy very interesting and lectures are enjoyable to attend. Very nice individual- 100% recommend.

Harry is the best. Take his class any chance you get!

The best professor I have had in all my time at UW-Madison. He makes a real effort to get to know his students and help them grow academically. You feel like you're really learning in his classes. I try to take a class with him every semester I am here.

Brighouse is awesome -- lectures were very interesting and involved. Rarely did attendance at lectures, usually took attendance in discussion. Pretty easy A as long as you confident making an argument. You won't regret taking this class

Harry is an incredibly thought provoking professor, definitely one of the best I've had at UW. One of few classes that I genuinely have looked forward to and learned from. There's a decent amount of reading but you'll get by with either skimming or skipping a few readings; he'll cover everything that's important in lecture. 10/10 would recommend!

What an absolute gem of a dude. Funny, smart, excellent at inspiring discussion. This past semester was my first class with him and it was in a small class setting, so I can't speak to a larger lecture style class with him, but I can promise that he's a compassionate guy who will care about you doing well and will keep class engaging.

Brighouse was a good prof. Class was mostly business school students that were getting their ethics requirement. Material was interesting and encouraged us to think about our own beliefs. Lots of reading and writings, but nevertheless an entertaining class

Brighouse was one of the best professors I've had at UW. Although sometimes lectures were dull and felt long, you could tell that he was very educated about what he was teaching. He remained unbiased throughout the class which I thought was admirable. Grading is based off of 2 essays, 2 exams, and online discussion posts.

Great lectures and discussions, open to all viewpoints. Brighouse is one of the most caring and dedicated professors at UW Madison.

Harry is by far the best professor I have had in my four years at UW-Madison. His class consists of discussion posts due every Monday (graded off of completion), 2 essays, and 2 exams. Harry is hilarious and a great professor. I actually looked forward to attending his class every week. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him, do it.

Brighouse is one of those professors that, while perhaps not the greatest lecturer or explainer of the material, is wonderful to listen to. He is absolutely hilarious and inspiring and really cares about making a difference in his students' lives. His classes are full of a lot of open discussion and is very easy to reach outside of class.

Philos341 was the first of three classes I took with Harry. He is the most approachable professor I've had during my three years at UW, and he cares so much about his students' learning. That is why grading seems unclear, because he truly isn't concerned with grades, but with how much you learn. Put in effort, and you'll have an A.

This class was awful. The grading was ridiculously unclear (the syllabus had no numbers attached to it), so you had no idea where you stood in the class. You also have to write a one page paper for every Monday, but according to the syllabus this has no impact on your grade. You have to write two papers and the grading is harsh.

Who doesn't like Brighouse? He's funny and genuinely wants his students to learn and do well. You'll have to read and attend lecture in order to not be lost, but lecture is conversational and interesting. If you have to take a philosophy course, take one with him!

Harry is very approachable. He is always willing to help clarify, but you have to ask. Be prepared to read and participate, otherwise you'll have a bad time. His grading is rather lenient as long as you are clear and concise with your writing. He is rather clear with his expectations and although attendance isn't mandatory, it's best to go.

Harry is an unbelievable professor who genuinely cares about his students and his work. I have taken three of his courses and his FIG. Without his guidance and his interesting and riveting topics in class, my college experience would not be as incredible and worthwhile as it is.

Professor Brighouse's course is reading intensive, but the exams will be rewarding for the reading you put in and the time you attend the twice a week power lecture. Discussion is optional but can help with papers. I strongly urge to take the course with Brighouse. He is hilarious, loves sharing funny stories, and is very knowledgeable.

Harry (yes, he is okay with being addressed as Harry) is the best professor I've ever had. He creates a safe learning environment in which students feel comfortable expressing their opinions and does everything in his power to challenge claims from both sides so that you're forced to think, build your case, and have a firm stance. It's awesome.

Professor Brighouse is incredibly knowledgeable and therefore a fantastic resource for anyone interested in the philosophy of education. He is attentive to questions, thrives off of discussing the "hard" stuff and cares more about learning than grades. Take a class with him if you get the chance!

Best Professor I've ever had, and probably ever will have. He's so smart, and loves starting discussion and just making you think. I had him for 104 freshman year with the FIG I was in and I had to take more of his classes. Get to know him personally--he is so nice and caring, he's just a great guy and teacher all around. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM

Hands down, best professor I've ever had. He's a fantastic professor with tons of passion for his subject, and he really cares about his students. Cannot recommend him highly enough.

Class kind of depends on your TA since they grade everything (but everyone has the same TA). Class is pretty boring and I found that we never really finished a topic before going on to another one. Not a horrible way to fulfill the business requirement.

This was the core class of the FIG I took first semester of freshman year. Harry was fantastic! He works hard to make his students comfortable sharing and providing evidence for their opinions while rarely divulging his own. He is very helpful with papers when you visit him at office hours. If you want to take a FIG, his is the one to take!

Fabulous professor. Fun to listen to and great material that's relevant to all students. He loves provoking discussion and hearing what students have to say. Good at keeping his own opinions hidden--he evaluates the reasoning behind your opinion, not which side you end up choosing. TAKE THIS CLASS

Such a great professor with so much interest in the subject matter and the success of his students. Really thought-provoking and fun to listen to. Participate in class and make use of his office hours. BEST PHILOSOPHY COURSE, BEST PROFESSOR.

Laid back and funny. Do not need to read for class. Does not go into much detail.

So I love Brighouse. He really knows his stuff, is hilarious, and will go to great lengths to help you succeed. His downfall is that he can be a bit flaky at times, but he extends himself too far to be able to accomplish everything on his plate. If you get to know him, you will learn and come to love learning more than you thought possible.

Prof. Brighouse is really funny and easy to listen to/understand. He is more than happy to talk to students. I loved going to lecture. This class really made me think about why exactly I believe what I believe. That said, you will get out what you put in.

Class is interesting and relevant to topics today. There 2 papers and a midterm and a final. Grading is done by TA so if you have a good TA you'll do well. I had a tougher one so the class was harder than it needed to be. Sample Midterm/Final questions are handed out before but are basically the same on exam day. Don't need to read the articles.

Makes lectures very interesting and entertaining. The class is very relevant to contemporary issues and gives very good insight into those issue. Brighouse is a little disorganized but a great teacher overall. I recommend taking this class

I took this class as a continuation of the FIG I took freshman year. This man is the BEST TEACHER I have ever had! If you show interest in his class he will go out of his way to inspire and encourage you. He genuinely cares about his students and the material he teaches. I have learned more in his classes than in all of my other classes combined!

This class was interesting at times, but boring at others. I had an excellent TA, who really knew what he was talking about. The papers are a bit difficult...exams are very easy essay exams and you are given basically the same questions ahead of time. Minimal work required...I stopped reading toward the end of the semester and still got an A.

I had him in 104 for my FIG freshman year, so it was only him and 20 of us and no TA. brighouse is the bomb. he's so much fun, really cares about his students, super helpful with any papers, and i did minimal reading and still got an A. funny, incredibly smart, encouraging, helpful. might be different with a TA but himself he's awesome.

funny guy. i enjoyed most lectures. interesting material. 2 papers, midterm and final (both essay). i got an A in this class with minimal effort.

Wonderful guy, really funny. Can't claim I learned a whole lot in his class, but then again what do you ever learn in a moral issues course? He made it interesting and I actually didn't mind going to lecture. Take him if you have to take this class!!

funny guy but tough to understand what he is actually trying to say and what his points are. He gets confused and gets side tracked. TA's suck for this course. DON'T take this course with Harry if you want to learn something!!

This guy is hilarious. Seriously, he's off the chain. And smart, too.

I love Prof. Brighouse! He truely is passionate about this class and it shows. Most of the readings were interesting, and he explains them very well. If you pay attention in lecture you should do just fine. There were 2 papers and 2 tests, which are all based heavely on the readings. Your TA makes a big difference though. I reccomend the class!

The TA does all the grading, so your grade will depend on the TA. I didn't like some of the subjects of the course, like all the parenting and school choice issues (while leaving out DP and Animal treatment), but he chose what he loves, and you can tell he's passionate about the subject. Harry is awesome though, his accent rocks, and so do his soc

i really like this class. the topics are very interesting (except for 1) and professor brighouse is entertaining. i love listening to him speak in his british accent for during my power lecture. he's a great professor & a nice guy if you go talk to him.

I had him for a small lecture. Class was like having a conversation, it flowed that well. Excellent philosphy class. If you're a thinker, you'll do great with him, if you're a follower, pay attention, do your reading, take good notes, and pray.

Personally, his British accent was cute, and it deceived me to the class it really was. Though I found his lectures interesting and I thought I took great notes, I could never get good grades on any of his papers. But his TA was a giant @$$hole, so I may be biased here. This isn't an easy A class
