He pressures grad students to exploit their undergrads. one of the grad students there already scared two undergrads away because of this. Also hes bad a cell bio he can only really handle binary research questions, he hates variation and will try to make you repeat the experiments until he likes the result. dont not join his lab whatsoever
About fellowships... he will make you apply to them, not help at all because "you get what you deserve" and then if you dont get them he will blame you for not getting it. Apparently one of his grad students committee had to talk to him about him needing to help out more during fellowship writing.
I heard there was a meeting in some dept as to "how PIs should fire students?" because one of his grads left his lab. rumor has it that Han fired them because they had time off due to a family emergency and that the Phd committee got involved and urged Han to not fire him but he didnt listen and now no one wants to join his lab.
Upsets him that McBurney offers more time and open book test and complains to TAs that they're "taking advantage" of this to pass tests or re take exams. If youre DEI, he'll make you apply to things but not actually do anything he states to make DEI specific training. he just wants the money. Hes bad at taking criticism.Nonexistent social skill
He micromanages TAs. He will make you TA even though he has funding. He will constantly compare you to others in the lab so you feel "pressure to be better". Time off annoys him, even going on vacations during the weekend annoys him because you are less "energetic" for the week. 2-3hr long lab meetings bc he makes little "quizzes" for you to test u
for grads: Eventhough it's allowed, he will try do anything to not help during your prelim exam prep. He will make you apply to fellowships and not read them because of his you get what you deserve mentality. He will make you repeat experiments until the data looks like his expectation. He will take to you for hours over very small mistakes.
If you've taken Psych 454, this unit of the course will be a breeze. Han was a great lecturer and his slides were clear and well organized. His exam was the easiest out of the 3 units, and the technical Tuesday section of his lectures (a brief explanation of neuro research techniques) was pretty interesting. Do not skip lectures for this unit!
