I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who isn't an Anthropology major. Bunn's lecture slides are awful, you have to take notes on literally everything. However, he does provide a study guide/slide that literally tells you what you need to know for the exam. If you miss lecture you will NEED to go to office hours.
102 is taught by 5 professors throughout the semester and professor Bunn is the worst one. He is so boring. His exam is the hardest one and requires that you remember minuscule details. There are also essay questions on exams worth 50%. You must cite assigned readings without even knowing what the essay question will be beforehand.
Do not take this professor's courses, unless you're an anthropology major and you have to. His lectures have barely any words and mostly pictures, so you HAVE to attend class and listen to every word he says. Exams are overemphasized, you can barely read his hand-written feedback, and he is a relentless grader. His classes set students up to fail.
He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does! You can tell he loves the topic and is able to go into depth on every aspect. I will say due to the course I took, he had to compress millions of years of information into a months worth of classes, which did make lectures a bit rushed and quite a bit of reading outside of class.
Do not take this course. Your entire grade is based off of 3 papers, 4 exams, and participation in discussion. Exams have an essay part where you are expected to cite anthropological papers, from memory, each paper being around 20 pages in length. For an introductory 100 level course for non-majors, it was made way harder than it needed to be.
Lectures were pretty dry and confusing, but he 100% knows what he is talking about. His section of the class is filled with a ton of information.
Pretty dry lecturer but seems like a nice guy
Lectures were pretty boring. He knew what he was talking about, just class was so dull and monotonous. It was a little difficult to study for the exam, but making a timeline helped visually to study for it.
Super boring, exams are only memorization and very little helpful instruction.
Prof. Bunn is one of 5 teachers who work together to run this class, and his section was kinda boring. The content itself is clear but the online lectures weren't all that good. Still manageable, but if you want to take this course, definitely take it because the other professors are more interesting with their lectures.
Professor Bunn covers interesting material in his lectures and has good insight from his experiences, but I was glad that I could speed the videos up as he talked too slow for my liking. Be prepared to also do a lot of reading for this section of the course, with a lot of unusual names, dates, and places to make note of.
Prof. Bunn is very nice, but his lectures are incredibly dull and confusing. He lectures so dryly and in such a monotone voice that it is easy to zone out. He also has a habit of contradicting himself, such as saying something was true but 10 minutes later saying it was false. He does not really make the class interesting, and it is an easy A.
You can tell Bunn is interested and cares about his students. He sometimes says one thing about a topic then tells you 10 minutes later that it's is false. He assigned a few readings but they were just his research publications and not worth reading for exams. I would only have him for a professor for upper-level classes. Exams were irrelevant
Professor Bunn is obviously very knowledgeable in the field of archaeology. However, his lectures are extremely dry and I found it hard to stay attentive for the entire period. 321 is graded solely on 3 exams, and you need to attend lecture and do the readings if you want an A.
Overall a decent professor, just kind of monotone and boring. Definitely mediocre, but taking notes in his lectures should lead to good results.
Anthro 102 was the worst class I have ever taken. The class is extremely boring, and the exams are pretty hard because you are tested on the most minute details possible. Avoid this class if possible; look for other ways to meet social science/humanities requirements.
I LOVED Bunn. He is an amazing anthropologist and a well-known and respected one too. Yes, his lectures can seem dry or boring, but if you are an anthro major or if you enjoy the material, then you will probably find it easy to pay attention. He has a dry sense of humor and it's hilarious to hear him lowkey roast other anthropologists in his field.
He's fine but just so unorganized, and boring. The archaeology section just doesn't even feel like anthro and he makes it so boring to listen to. It's a ton of reading and the exam is definitely not easy and asks a lot of specific questions that you would only understand if you read the (very long, detailed) textbook.
Was 1/5 professors in Anthro 102. One of my favorites as an Anthro major, but seems difficult for those who don't have an Anthro/hominin/human evolution background. Not impossible, and VERY willing to explain during office hours. You will learn some cool things in 102, and I'm taking another class with him next semester.
Dr. Bunn has a pretty boring period to lecture about in Anthro 102. He is the first of 5 professors in the course and covers a huge span of history, mainly stemming back to the arisal of early hominins in Africa. He speaks slowly during the lectures and the test is very easy (mostly objective with few short answer and an essay). Easy A
Super boring lectures about archaeology and the tests were very hard, covered a lot of material he didn't talk about in lecture.
Bunn is a decent lecturer and can get pretty dull sometimes. Do the readings even though they're long. His test questions are rather all over the place so you just have to study everything instead of being able to focus your studying.
The class mainly focuses on early hominins and evolution, not culture. You're graded solely on three essay/short answer tests (not cumulative) and there's an optional paper for extra credit. He lets you know what will be on the tests for the most part, but DO THE READING. It's a tough class, but Bunn's a funny guy.
Terrible, always seems like information is irrelevant. Gives a lot of information and you dont know what will be on the test. Dont take this class.
Professor Bunn is a solid dude. He's been in the field for ages and really knows what he's talking about. Grades are based solely on blue-book exams, which was kind of a pain, but it wasn't bad. Lectures/topic is super interesting. There's no textbook, but there's readings online that aren't that necessary if you go to class every day.
Bunn is a man that knows a lot on what he is talking about. Most of the things he lectures on were things he worked on during his career. Many readings are assigned but no necessary at all to succeed in the class. Material can be interesting
One of the worst classes I've taken. Bunn is one of the most boring lecturers I've listened to, and not to mention he contradicts nearly every fact he gives, or doesn't follow up with additional evidence which completely changes the conclusions. I DO NOT recommend this class, and this is coming from someone interested in the topic as a whole.
Anthro 102 is taught by 4 different professors (Bunn, Kenoyer,Kim, Clayton) who each teach about a specific location around the world. It is a very interesting class, but the lectures can sometimes be hard to follow if you are not an anthropology major. They call the readings "mandatory" but you will never be tested on them. Would take again.
Lectures are somewhat dry, but if you are interested in the material it can be kind of cool. Slides are easy to follow. Reading isn't mandatory.
Bunn is the best professor in the anthro dept. His material is difficult yet clearly presented. His grading system is fair. A's are not easy to achieve, which makes getting one all the more wonderful. Bunn manages to make complex ideas about human evolution and paleontology easy accesible to undergraduates. He also is easy on the eyes.
Bunn is extremely knowledgeable but also an extremely dry lecturer. Do the readings, take good notes, study and you will do fine in the class. Sure, the lectures are boring but he has a dry sense of humor and is super super knowledgeable. I had to take 321 and the effort I put into this class is exactly the grade I got.
Do not take this class. If you are an anthropology major take 112 and 322. Bunn class is terrible and he is also. His grading scale is outrageous. Do not set yourself up. It will be a headache everytime. You've bee WARNED
Because of this professor I am no longer majoring in Anthropology. He is well versed in his field and very knowledgable but seems arrogant and full of himself. Lectures are very information dense and can be hard to follow. An intelligent professor but not a class (or professor) I would recommend.
Avoid having this teacher at all costs. He is a terrible lecturer, teacher, and test maker. Put another way, good luck not always falling asleep during his lectures and even if you don't he doesn't tell you what to study to do well on his tests. Even though he says don't read the book do so in order to do well.
If you are interested in the field, Bunn is the man. He is the epitome of what an archaeologist is. he is knowledgeable and loves this field. He will make jokes and poke fun at the material but most people are too oblivious to pay attention.
I didn't find Prof. Bunn hard to listen to during lecture. He is well-versed in his stuff. However, he talks a lot about his own research and doesn't pay much attention on the book. He even mentioned that it would be more beneficial to study the lectures rather than the textbook. My advice: Read the textbook!
I heard a lot of bad things about Bunn before I took the class, which scared me a lot. He was a pretty good lecturer though. He's quiet, so sit close and do the readings (even though there are a lot) and GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. His exam is mult choice and not bad. The others are essay and difficult, so be sure to ace Bunn's.
I think he knows what he's talking about, but lectures are torturous. He's way too quiet and makes everything really boring. It seemed like in terms of test material the things you learn in discussions are more important than the lecture itself.
Driest lecturer ever. Gives you study questions for the exam, but more material is always on there. IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD AT WRITING BLUE BOOK ESSAYS, DO NOT TAKE THIS TEST. That + hours of cramming was the only reason I got an A. I would never, ever recommend this class over 322 with Clayton. Take that for your archaeology requirement instead.
This professor is terrible. He is a terrible speaker, so his lectures are extremely dull. The only things that is worse than his lectures are his tests. He won't tell you what to study, but I recommend looking at all of your notes and reading the book, although he says not to read the book.
I was not a fan at all. I could barely hear him when he talked. It didn't seem like he knew much of what he was trying to say because his sentences were slow and choppy. Couldn't distinguish between what I should know for the test and what not. Total bore.
Henry Bunn is a fantastic professor. He is incredibly knowledgeable and is one of the best resources you could have to learn about anthropology. His classes are interesting and he is very clear and fair in what he expects of his students. One of the best professors at the UW and a huge influence in the world of anthropology.
Bunn is great in the sense that he has had a great amount of actual fieldwork, so he really knows what he is talking about. As a professor he was unorganized though. His presentations focused on his findings, yet very little of it was on the test. However, he is very willing to answer questions and is very friendly.
Interesting professor, extremely knowledgeable about his material. Test was relatively easy, definitely needed to go over all of the different topics in depth before the exam. Great sense of humor.
He's so disorganized and he jumps from topic to topic. He also goes through his slides so quickly and is impossible to hear. I am not a fan.
Lecture was okay, somewhat disorganized though (from the standpoint on trying to figure out what to study for the test). Test is a lot of memorization of dates and events (since it's archeaology). Sometimes puts a little humor in.
Bunn is no fun. :(
Henry is a great professor! He can tell if you're actually interested in anthro or if you're full of BS. He would do anything for a student he thought was serious.
Good professor, really knowledgeable about the subject. Names of sites, dates, and artifacts can get pretty confusing but the short answer part of the exam won't make or break you. Put a lot of effort into the essays, use lots of readings, and take into consideration Bunn's opinions based on his own articles!
Prof. Bunn is a very clear and knowledgable professor. He tells you everything you need to know in lecture, including the questions on the exams. He really wants you to feel as passionate about the topics as he does. He also has a sense of humor. All you need to do is show up to lecture and not be afraid to ask questions.
archaology is a subject that i am interested in, so the level of detail he was able to present was fascinating. learning from a person who still does research in the field and is moving the subject forward is great. too bad early human evolution isn't the most pressing subject to science
Bunn may not be the most engaging professor, but if you are a student who is actually interested in paleoanthro and arch then you should be able to see his knowledge and experience come through in his teaching. Very nice guy as well, he's my advisor, only wish he assigned readings that were worth the time.
Unable to distinguish between core concepts and trivial details. Puts minimal effort into preparing for class. Assigns random, outdated technical articles that he aut****d decades ago, for the sole purpose of gloating over a few cherry picked examples of him winning some obscure argument against another equally self indulgent researcher.
He talks very softly, but he isn't boring if you pay attention. Reading the book is practically useless - don't waste your money. Write down everything he says and MAKE A TIMELINE. The timeline is what got me an A in this class. I got very sick of talking about strangely-shaped rocks and there's lots of studying, but he's not that bad.
Although I had this guy ages ago (pardon the pun) I just had to come and see the comments in the "new age" and lo and behold, NOTHING has changed! So, he's still boring and still giving the same old detailed crappy tests he did way back when. And despite his resume, he hasn't moved on to bigger and better things in his profession. UW should boot
despite his "boring-ness", he was a great professor. he covers everything thoroughly and definitely knows what he's talking about. i barely studied for his exam and still got an A on it! i did, however, go to every lecture/discussion.. it's worth it though.. archaeology was very interesting and he was a really nice guy :)
BORING. Impossible to listen to, but you must to get a good grade. When you take notes, dont just write what is on powerpoint (USELESS) you must write practically everything he says. His tests are very detail oriented. Almost nothing comes from book. Hope to get a TA who gives hints on what to study
Bunn is horrible. SOOOO boring and doesn't even talk about the stuff that's going to be on the test, but it's not in the book either. You have no idea what is going to be on the test, and no idea what to study. Avoid Bunn at all costs!
This class is taught in 3 sections with 3 different professors. Henry Bunn was the 2nd professor and was extremely boring. It was sooo hard to pay attention to him. If you can avoid taking him as a professor, you should because he has a very monotonous voice and like I said before...I had a very hard time paying attention!!
Not helpful during office hours.
Bunn is great and has a bizarre sense of humor that you've got to love. The class is interesting but you must go or else suffer on the exams. Exams you need to know every bone, tool, cut mark, etc to get even an A/B. Beware this means lots of studying or one superb memory.
Tests are a game of guessing not only what he wants as an answer but what he meant to write as a question. He gave us a studyguide for the essays w/ a 2 part question, but only wrote half the question on the actual test. He graded the class down for not answering the half he didn't bother to ask, saying we should have known he meant to include it.
makes interesting subject dull, tiresome. lectures are poorly prepared, to the extent they are prepared at all. has difficulty distinguishing between important and irrelevant points. copious required readings are a tribute to his own ego and little more. well educated on the topic, but does not impart this knowledge in a meaningful way.
this prof is a truly nice guy; and he will help you if you come to his office/email him and his background is impressive. although this class if more for anthro, zoology, bio majors than anyone else, it is a fair class, albeit not one you can sleep through to get an A. just come to lecture.
How could you like this guy?! By a wide margin the worst teacher I've had since gradeschool. Takes a fascinating subject and stuffs it deep into the Ivory Tower in a truly obnoxious way. Fixated on trivia (memorizing number of individual bones he found during last summer's field school, etc.).
The lectures were pretty boring, exams were extremely difficult
PEople are crazy... Bunn's a great prof... very knowledgable. Very willing to talk during office hours. Travelled to most of the places he lectures on--- I loved this class.
The lectures were extremely boring, but his exam was pretty fair
I thought he was a good lecturer and he really answers questions well. i also think his test questions are really fair representations of what we've covered in class.
Very interesting lecturer. Some people just don't like the material I guess...

I really liked him. the info was interesting and i thought it was conveyed well.
He is more boring than the dead things he talks about. The lectures are impossible to get through even if you took four aderol pills and weighed a 104 pounds. Don't go to lecture just READ THE BOOK.
Although he knows his material, he wasn't able to convey ideas he tested to the class. His test questions were ambigious. I would not recommend taking him.
Boring as hell
