Profe Menechella is very kind and super interested in the FIG program. However, she is old-fashioned and isn't great with keeping track of time. Will often show up late and run past the allotted time. Lectures have nothing to do with what is on the test, yet attendance is mandatory. Big rambler.
I took this class for my FIG and it was a lot more than I expected. The lectures are required but almost entirely unnecessary since the readings are rarely discussed in class. Lots of reading, some of it is dry. The tests are worth a lot and the questions are way too specific. However, Grazia was the sweetest and taught interesting concepts.
Talks about herself the entire time through endlessly long, tedious lectures. Lectures have nothing to do with test material, which is ridiculously specific and redundant details from countless readings.
Grazia is such an Italian grandmother! She really is the sweetest woman ever and wants you to succeed. She really likes to talk about herself, but honestly it's pretty interesting most of the time. Unfortunately, sometimes the workload is a bit much, but she is super reasonable about what she puts on the exams. Overall, would recommend!
She is difficult and does not engage well with her students. She is conceited, but she knows the material well. Make sure to do the readings before class.
Grazia is very dedicated to what she teaches and knows her information well, however, her lectures are long and tedious. If you don't mind discussions, be prepared to do a lot of it because she often partners students up and have them analyze and present the long, dreadful readings they should have completed before the lecture that specific day.
Grazia is super sweet and has a really strong personal & educational background in this subject, so her lectures are entertaining, full of rambling stories. A lot of reading & videos are assigned, but I admit I did about half of it and still have an A/B. Tests are easy, 1 research paper, and there are cooking days AND she cooks for the class!
This class was extremely interesting and super super fun. I thought Grazia was a wonderful professor. The whole class always had a good time. However, while the class was interesting, the reading material could be very very dry. There was also a fair amount of writing required. Despite the tediousness, it was never a struggle to do well.
Lectures are terribly boring, doesn't post slides, and the information is not relative to tests, yet attendance is mandatory. Her slides are filled with 300+ words, and she doesn't even give you time to take notes on them. Readings are dry and you are expected to buy multiple books (6+). Overall pointless class, rude professor.
She is a really nice professor but her lectures get long and aren't structured. She was born and raised in Italy, so she talks about that a lot and has that type of attitude. Sometimes, she just wastes class talking about our Moodle page and doesn't even bring up the reading but stay updated on the reading. Tests are essays about the reading.
Very sweet lady but she tends to ramble during lectures. Lots of reading for the class. Tests are terribly difficult.
I have her for a Lit Trans class for my Food Cultures of Italy FIG and I really like her! She invited us to her house and cooked dinner for us which was super nice, and she organized trips for us to go on. Generally she graded easily for our exams (short answer and essay). However, the lectures got to be SUPER long. Overall I liked her though!
She doesn't realize that while most students in the class understand the Italian language, it isn't possible to take notes, listen and comprehend all while she speaks a million miles a minute. The homework load is rather large; lots of reading and not enough time to do it. Also, the out of class movies get a bit ridiculous.
Menechella is the absolute worst professor that I have EVER had the GREAT displeasure of having. There are few people I so strongly dislike. She is dumb and can't formulate a simple thought. She has powerpoints that are novels and flips through them at the speed of light--then doesn't post them online. Test questions are RIDICULOUSLY specific
Awful. Just awful. Her teaching style is all over the place and she cannot organize a lecture. She will ramble on and on about something irrelevant for 45 minutes and try to teach the entire class in the remaining 5. Not helpful at all in office hours or even in class. Her class is so frustrating. Most ignorant/rude professor I’ve had at UW
Very knowledgeable on a very specific subject. A basic understanding of each reading is advised for the two exams-there's also a presentation and a paper. Lectures can get long-winded so an interest in Italian lit is a good thing to have. P.S. She is Italian--always a great thing for a lit trans class!
writing and speaking intensive. The book is used a lot first semester and there is a lot of homework! 2 projects and journal writing every week. Other than Homework, not too bad.
