I definitely recommend this class for breadth requirements. It is graded by many things, so the tests and papers aren't stressful. The professor is just amazing and puts an effort into learning everyone's names. The TAs are also very flexible and allow helpful extensions in case you need them. Be ready to participate and read.

Never again. Lots of readings and a discussion post every week. The 5 quizzes + map quiz are quite okay, just go through the slides/your notes. But 35% of your final grade is participation and even if you attend almost all the time, participate, fill out her notecards, you can end up with a participation grade that significantly lowers your score.

One of my favorite teachers clearly spoke and actually made an effort to know her students and their names. She also tells history like a story which helped me a lot!

Honestly the Lectures were absolutely amazing. I'm an Engineering major and so I took it for credit, but it was honestly one of the if not best class I've taken in the school. The flow in the lecture is amazing and it was honestly very enjoyable and relaxing. I would say 80-90% of the info is from lectures so don't skip out on it.

I love Professor Whiting! She's very organized, assigns a manageable amount of reading as homework, and sets up her class so that no one paper or test is make-or-break for your grade. Lectures are easy to understand, and her passion for the subject keeps them interesting.

Prof Whiting was great, there were 5 quizzes counting for about a quarter of your grade. The quizzes were a bit difficult but if you just read over your notes you will be fine. Be sure to participate, she is really great and caring for sure take her class.

5 very easy quizzes (30%) and two papers make up most of your grade, with the rest mainly being participation. If you are expecting to learn actual AMERICAN history, this is not the class for you. It should be titled "Prelude to American History". Easy class for humanities credit, just don't expect to learn about America. Whiting is very caring.

Loved this class! You can't take notes on computer/device but I actually felt like I learned more from this method of teaching. Not everything is shown on the slides which is nice because you have to actually listen which makes lecture more interesting. 5 quizzes and 2 papers (no exams) and she is a great teacher and lecturer!!

Whiting is AMAZING. Yes, she does know everyone by name within a couple weeks but this way you can form a relationship with her and you can tell she really cares about her students! There's just 5 quizzes & 2 papers (no exams). Attendance in lectures & discussion is required & you have a participation grade but lectures are interesting and engaging

There are 5 quizzes, one gets dropped and they are very fair. If you pay attention in lecture you will do fine on them, make sure you read the discussion book so you can easily complete the paper. She memorizes everyones pictures and names so she can force participation, so pay attention and go to lecture, sometimes she gives extra credit in lectur

If you don't participate you won't pass. She loves to set her students up by making quizzes confusing and you have to choose the most correct answer. She is a force and I would recommend taking this class if you're perfect cause then you'll do well. Over her

My favorite class at UW. Prof Whiting is amazing! The lectures are engaging; she makes history exciting! Lectures involve participation, which makes the class fun. There are no cumulative exams, but 6 quizzes. It is a fair way to gauge your understanding of material. The papers were on interesting topics. 10/10 recommend!

History 109 is literally one of my favorite classes taken here are UW-Madison. Whiting is an amazing professor! She forces you to think and make connections in ways you never would have thought to do so before. 10/10 would recommend this class (which I believe is now being taught as HIST101) and Prof. Whiting. Easy class w/straight-forward grading.

Prof. Whiting is very knowledgable about her lecture material. Hist 101 was set up PERFECTLY for students juggling other classes, although theres a decent amount of work, the material is made interesting by her lectures. No cumulative tests, which is awesome... just check-in quizzes and papers. 10/10 would take her if you have the chance!

I would take very class she offered if it fit in my schedule. She is thoughtful, force you to pay attention, GREAT at thoughtfully connecting concepts + doesn't force students to cram for tests. All texts are aplicable. Care for learning process and is very available, she knew every name. BUT doesnt allow laptops/MUST attend lecture & participate.
