Gerit is awesome! Definitely brutally honest and will point out your mistakes, but don't take it personally as she just wants everyone to succeed. Great sense of humor and makes the class atmosphere super laid back/fun. Definitely time consuming (lots of time in the studio outside of class) but I can't believe how much I've learned!
Gerit Grimm. What an inspiration! She made me fall in love with pottery and continues to do. If you have ANY desire to learn ceramics, take a class with her. It is well worth your time.
Gerit's a tough love person; if you're doing something wrong, she'll gently but firmly correct you. End of the semmie I had 32 works ranging from cylinders to frickin teapots with spout, handles, + lids. She pushes you through a lot of skills. Gerit throws you off the deep end into pottery and I'm forever grateful. Take her class!!
Gerit is awesome. Makes you work super hard but she is super skilled at ceramics and is hilarious. She might tell you that you're work is bad, but she just has high expectations. Super cool teacher who isn't afraid to tell it as she sees it.
Gerit is a great instructor and a very fair grader. Put the work in and finish all the given assignments and you'll do great. She's hilarious and likes to make class fun, so it's generally a pretty laid back atmosphere. She'll also help you out when you need it, and is overall just an awesome professor and person to be around.
Gerit Grimm is a superstar in the ceramics world. UW Madison is so lucky to have her, and anyone even slightly interested in ceramics should take this course with her. The comments below that mention her "smashing pots" and being "mean" are not true. She pushes you to your full potential. Nobody gets under a B.
Anyone who is interested in ceramics would be lucky to study under Gerit Grimm. She is not only very knowledgable, but also a very good instructor. She will help you develop your ceramic skill set while also encouraging you to create your own aesthetic style. As long as you show genuine interest and put in a lot of effort, you will do well.
At first Gerit can be intimidating, but she is an amazing artist and professor. She really pushes her students to do their best work. She gives great feedback and advice when you need it. She wants the best for her students and will help you further yourself in the art world. I've taken two semesters of ceramics with her and I cant wait to continue
Very hands on. Quick demos then expects you to pump out the work. (Extra studio hours & online research req.) Jumps in when you ask for help. Negative comments are for you to learn from, not to discourage. Encouraging in one-on-one meetings. Pushes you to find your own voice. Good sense of humor. Knows her stuff! I took her advanced class as well.
She was super nice, she will tell you what is wrong but she will also help you fix it. She can be scatter-brained at times, but she makes up for it with good humor. I plan on continuing with her. To think the first review almost scared me off the class. Note: she is German, so be prepared for an accent!!
Despite other entries on this site, Gerit is an incredible teacher. She's got a quirky sense of humor too. Expect to work hard, but expect to see results in your skill. Only take her section if you have a real interest in ceramics, not just for fun. She doesn't smash pieces, but she will point out its flaws... brutal honesty. You'll learn so much.
I love ceramics and have been doing it for a few years. I had Gerit as my first college course teacher for ceramics. I understand constructive criticism but she was just mean about everyones work. She even smashed someone's piece. Try to take the other art professor because she is terribe and very unclear with her expectations.
