In my four years at UW-Madison, I've never had a professor as terrible as professor Close. He provided no positive feedback on papers and created a really uncomfortable class environment. Participation is mandatory (he marks down how many times you participate) but if you don't agree with him he will give you lesser marks. Stay away!

This was my second time with Profe Close and I really like his teaching style! Each class you read one piece and then a group presents and there's a class discussion during lecture.

The movies we watched in class were horrid, and we had to write a paper for each film. He does pop quizzes in class, so be prepared for that. He also has a clipboard that marks how often you speak in class. This class is a LOT of work. Try to take another class if you can.

Don't take this class if you're not willing to work hard. Exams are heavily essay based and mc often are unnecessarily specific. He ranks people on participation which at times can be stressful. However, most people in the class struggle w/ exams, and it will be accounted for in the final grade. You'll learn a lot and he's a nice guy overall. :)

Professor Close might be the most pretentious professor I have encountered in college thus far. He provides no positive feedback, and his comments on writing seem as though he is just trying to show how smart he is. You learn about interesting content but then are assessed on narratological knowledge instead of class content. Stay Away !!!!

Professor Close was a really great professor! He tailored the class often to our interests and fostered really interesting discussions. He also gave amazing and super detailed feedback on all of our assignments and went out of his way to provide extra resources/advice to strengthen our writing and our own personal interests.

Glen is a very kind and caring professor. However, his class is structured in a way that is not designed to succeed. For participation (20% of your grade), you must speak in class while he tallies your responses on a clipboard. Exams were very long and all short answer and hand-written. The class is a lot of reading and work, but Glen is very nice.

If you need to take this class with him for Spanish credit, choose an independent study instead. Easily the worst class/professor I have experienced in the Spanish department. Forced participation, reduced grade if camera is off, heavy points off for minor grammar errors, and much more about his teaching style will make you want to drop.

Prof. Close was a great choice! Took Spanish film with him and enjoyed the content alot, but the reading assignments were too long for a T/TH schedule. Takes about 2-3 hours per lecture of prep reading. Attendance/participation is mandatory. He keeps a record how often you speak in class. Picky with grading content on essays (8 total in course).

Awesome professor who actually cares if you learn the language or not. Class goes by fast and topics aren't boring. definitely recommend

I have excelled in all of my previous Spanish courses receiving nothing lower than an A, but this class was an exception. I felt that he never provided clear grading rubrics or instructions for what he actually wanted. He called me culturally insensitive for giving my honest opinion about the awfully boring movies that he made us watch. STAY AWAY!

As senior (who has never gotten below an A in a Spanish class), I can confidently say that Glen's class was the worst I've taken had in all 4 years. Grades are based on weekly essays and pop quizzes. Lectures lack relevancy. He tallies your participation each day on a clipboard. Gotta give the guy some grace but MAN, his class was rough.

This is one of the better professors I've had. He cares about the subject matter, and fosters interesting discussion. Make sure you speak up because participation is a must, but he is easy to approach and non-intimidating. The class was very interesting about film in Latin America; we watched movies, wrote mini papers, and never had an exam!

Great professor. Truly cares about his subject and it shows. Makes class interesting with music and video clips. Study main points talked about in class for exams, easy essays, must talk in class to get an A (but he is not judgmental and if you say something stupid he will turn it around for you).

high expectations, but still grades fair. will help if you ASK and answer emails promptly. dificult material: reread before class! relies too heavily on pwr pt, but posts it online after class. you MUST speak up in class to get a good grade. exam questions kinda come outa left field, so go in a talk to him before if you are unsure of things.

A genuinely nice guy. He answers questions very thoroughly and appreciates participation, even if you get an answer totally wrong, he's nice about it. The class is really boring, though, the material and his way of teaching. Papers are easy A's but exams are a little tougher.

I don't think he was the worst professor ever, but I definately was not interested in the material. He chose to play music from various hispanic cultures at the beginning of class, which I thought was fun and educational. I guess it's a good class for a requirement, but he wasn't my favorite prof.

Very dense, but clear, lectures. Be careful of time on the exams. Easy papers. He can be dry at times, nevertheless I enjoyed the class and learned a lot.

BORING lectures, not even necessary to attend. Discussion is important... tests are HARD! Study up! Papers are easy A's.

His lectures are boring as hell and he presents the most random crap. He is not interesting to listen to and the midterm was hard as hell, but the other stuff isn't so bad. I could hardly stay awake during lectures, though. Discussion is what got me through this class.

Challanging course, but he made sure that everyone's questions were answered. Not too hard to get good grades on papers if you go and talk to him - super approachable and willing to offer advice.
