Professor Neyrat was an amazing lecturer. I found his course interesting, and he showed many movie and music clips during class. The assignments arent terribly difficult, and only the Friday discussions are mandatory for attendance. I would take his class again, and I really didnt find that his accent was that hard to follow.
He is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about the class topic. I took this class over the summer, so the entire class grade was based on 4 assignments His accent can also be hard to understand, but he is aware of this and really tries his best to work around it. Not a pushover of a prof, which I don't think many students are used to.
Professor Neyrat's French is impossible to understand especially in large lecture halls. I'd recommend skip lecture and look over the slides instead. TA will be your best friend as they do all the grading, exams are relatively easy if you take notes off slides, 2 papers and short writing responses. Not a hard class by any means thanks to my TA.
do not take this professor tbh there is a ton of other classes for you out there. english 177 is not that important.
Class was very disorganized and Professor Neyrat's French accent can be difficult to understand, but was a very easy class. You don't have to go to lecture -- just read and/or look at the slides he posts. Some topics were surprisingly interesting. We had to complete 8 out of 11 weekly reading responses, one short paper, and 2 multiple choice exams.
His lectures dragged on a bit for me as a STEM student, but was passionate and engaged as well as an easy grader so I can't fault him too much. Had a very strict discussion attendance policy - 3 unexcused absences and you received an automatic fail. So don't oversleep. Other than that a chill class and a chill guy.
A lot of reviews are negative and I'm not sure why honestly. Granted I took this course during the summer but he was so nice. He does have an accent but it really isn't that hard to understand and he is very accomodating considering he knows he might be hard to understand. Furthermore, he is just a really nice guy who wants to hear you. I loved him
Professor Neyrat seems like a very nice guy, but he is nearly impossible to understand through his thick French accent. The lectures are very random and unnecessary and do not have required attendance. The readings also aren't necessary as long as you understand the overall theme of them.
Dr. Neyrat has a very French accent that can be hard to understand in lecture. This class is graded only on discussion participation, two exams, and one paper. The paper was super hard to understand exactly what we had to write, exams were on canvas, and notes were allowed, which made them a lot easier. Take notes on a computer during lecture!
Business major here, if you are not passionate about English then DO NOT take this class. Prof neyrat, nice guy but not easy to understand. Heavy accent, needs live captions during lecture otherwise I cannot understand what he is saying. It is very hard to pay attention. Grade is based off one essay and two exams. Wish I dropped when I had chance
I can tell he's passionate about what he teaches but it all seems meaningless to me and its difficult to have motivation in the class. A lot of random readings that I feel is useless. Heavy on lectures that VERY loosely connects to the readings and honestly seem very random. Overall I wish I had dropped this class when I had the chance.
While it is sometimes difficult to understand Professor Neyrat (he is French), the content of the class is interesting and encourages one to critique modern life, technology, and policies. Neyrat is a little "quirky" and the class is certainly unique, however I appreciate the dissection of the dark side of progress and modernization.
Except for discussions, this class was asynchronous. Professor Neyrat's lectures were interesting and easy to follow, especially because of his accent. I strongly recommend making a document with a table of relevant person/idea, their work, and the main ideas and using it to take notes on each of the lectures. The tests were fair and easy.
The course has absolutely nothing to do with anything applicable to real life. Professor Neyrat is a nice guy but his lectures are all over the place concept-wise and it's usually unclear what point he is trying to make. They are also very boring and his heavy accent makes it hard to understand. The class is somewhat easy but a total waste of time.
I took E153 online. It was the worst class I've ever taken. The lectures were incredibly boring. Professor Neyrats accent is hard to comprehend. The lectures have no relevance to real life and most of the time I had no clue what his point was. Class is graded on discussions, short papers each week and two exams. Not hard, just a waste.
Professor Neyrat is a French speaking professor that has trouble speaking and pronouncing English. This is the worst class I have ever taken, it is poorly run, poorly managed and the course material has no connection to practical life or to itself really. The course seems like it was thrown together last minute and was absolutely horrible.
Professor Neyrat comes to class prepared with notes which I love because it makes for a very straight forward lecture. The first half of the class was very interesting, but the subject matter grew old after a while because all he really talks about is how bad humans are and how we need to protect nature
This prof is so fab! Such a goofy person with a good sense of humor, but he speaks eloquently about enviro humanities and always leaves you with something to ponder. Also, watched parts of Koyaanisqatsi and listened to Robert Wyatt and Sun Ra in class. Such a nice change of perspective in a busy week.
I didn't find the subject matter very engaging and it isn't really "Comparative Literature" but more a class about people's relationship to the Earth and other animals. The prompts for essays are bland. Overall, it felt like I didn't learn much of value in the class.
THIS IS NOT MODERN & CONTEMPORARY LIT! Don't be fooled by the course description... It is actually WEIRD LIT: HUMANS, CYBORGS & ANIMALS. Prof. Neyrat tries but honestly you will sit in this class and have no idea what is going on. Tons of readings that don't make any sense. Exams are hard and you'll have no idea what they will be on. TA not helpful
The amount you have to read isn't outrageous for a literature class. He reads his lectures to us, but this causes them to be very well-organized. His slides don't contain enough information to rely solely off of them to study, you need to really pay attention in lecture and write down major points. His exams are your interpretation of course themes
Professor Neyrat's lectures can range from interesting to dull. However, attending all of them will be essential to your grade. There a lecture questions almost every class period which is a big chunk of your grade. There are a lot of readings for this class, but if you attend lecture you can get a good grade without cracking open any book.
Neyrat is a fantastic professor; he made Environmental Studies 113 extremely interesting. I liked it so much I'm looking to take another class with him!
Easy class and content; however, good luck if you skip class. There is usually a lecture question everyday, which accounts for your attendance and participation grade. Overall a good class to satisfy the literature requirement but his French accent can be quite hard to understand most of the time.
The class was very interesting, and Neyrat does a good job of explaining the information. But you have to go to lecture or it won't really make sense. He does add in his opinion many times, but allows students to form their own as well. Tests were easy, as long as you go to lecture and skim the readings.
This class is great if you're looking for an easy way to knock off a humanities requirement. Professor Neyrat is really great, and although his accent can be difficult to understand at times, his powerpoint have all that you really need to know. Not much homework to do and your grades on the written assignments really depend on your TA.
Great class if you're interested in the environment. The class is based on concepts which are well explained through lecture and discussion. Weekly reading responses, two exams, and a short paper. Discussion attendance mandatory, lecture had random attendance checks. Overall a great class!
Easy to do well in this class. Grade comprised of 7 one page responses, 2 exams, and a paper. Grade is dependent on TA, but all are reasonable. He is hard to understand sometimes because of his thick French accent, but the concepts he covers more than make up for any confusion. Would recommend for anyone interested in the environment.
One of the worst professors I've had at UW. Not very engaging, and never even introduced himself to our class. The class had great potential, but he focuses on random concepts and has very skewed analysis. Don't take his classes if you don't want a focus on philosophy. However, its easy to do well since the class is majorly analysis.
He has kind of a thick french accent but you get used to it really quick. He has a rich sense of humor and you can tell he really enjoys what he teaches. Interesting class, interesting course material. Graded on 1 midterm, 1 paper, a group project (website) 8 reading responses and a final. All pretty basic. No textbook, readings are online.
Really, really interesting class. A lot of assignments and exams deal with personal opinion and analysis, so as long as you can support yourself using the readings that are assigned you should be fine. He's pretty funny and is very invested in what he's talking about. The TA's for this class were awesome too.
