Hirsch is the best professor I have ever had. She was so smart and so passionate about the topics we would discuss. Having her in my first semester was the best choice I could have ever made; she made the transition so seamless, and I looked forward to her class every week.
Fran is the BEST professor. She was so accessible, helpful, and really made taking her class fun, even while discussing Totalitarianism. It was a History seminar so the amount of reading was a lot, but not insane, especially for the type of class. She really made you feel cared for and valued in her class, as a person and student. 10/10 recommend.
Fran is an angel on earth and makes attending class the best thing you'll do all week. I couldn't recommend her more, ESPECIALLY if you want a relationship with your prof: she's the person for that. She is so understanding, smart, relatable, kind, laidback, and overall incredible. This was seminar in Totalitarianism and I loved every second of it.
Professor Hirsch is an angel. She was so supportive in our transition during the pandemic and she was always so approachable if you have questions. You do a lot of reading and writing for the class but nothing atypical for a history class. I LOVE THIS WOMAN.
She is the right professor if you are interested in the history of 20th century from Russia's perspective. Very engaging professor. I took her class in the fall of my freshman year and she really bolstered my academic interest in history (I am a STEM major). Just attend the lectures and don't forget to be enthusiastic.
Homework was (a lot of) weekly readings and a one-page paper about those readings. No final exam, but long research paper instead. Not a bad professor, she's intelligent and knows her stuff. Not always the most interesting, but that might just depend on your personal interest in the class's topic. Enjoyed her class, but not really into history.
Prof. Hirsch is a wonderful instructor. Her lectures never disappointed, and her passion made this class so enjoyable. There is quite a bit of reading, however, it is manageable. Going to lecture is essential to do well in the course.
Professor Hirsch is a great teacher, very knowledgeable on the subject matter and made the class fun. She is a fast talker and is lecture heavy though. Hist 424 with Professor Hirsch is a must take class, the country debate was a lot of fun! There is a lot of reading but the books are interesting. If you like Cold War history take this class!
Prof. Hirsch is a great professor. She is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what she teaches. You'll have to pay close attention and take good notes in order to really understand everything but she's a great prof, I would definitely recommend taking a class with her.
If you get a chance to take a class by Prof Hirsch, do it! Her lectures are interesting and she's super passionate. She has a very distinct style of lecture (daily key words followed by her talking, a lot) but she's so engaging it's completely worth it. I'm not a history major and this was one of my favorite classes by far.
Hirsch is a very passionate lecturer and is emotionally connected to the content. Her lectures may include too much information to process. She assigns a lot of reading but nearly all but the packet are not necessary. the midterm and final are a lot but easy. country debate is actually fun. Take this class, its really good.
Prof. Hirsch is an awesome, enthusiastic teacher, and makes the course extremely interesting. I'm not a history major but this was one of the best classes I have taken at UW. Her tests are moderately easy as long as you attend class regularly. The readings are pretty short as well. This is an awesome course, I learned a lot. HIGHLY recommended.
Most exciting lecturer I ever had, and only half of that is because she talks like Alyson Hannigan circa American Pie. Gives Russian history its deserved enthusiasm.
I took the same seminar with Prof. Hirsch, and she is hard, but in a fair and appropriate way. I found her very engaging and enthusiastic, and she knows her stuff thoroughly. I'd definitely take another class with her!
Knows her stuff, very enthusiastic, fascinating lectures. Just one term paper, which is not that hard.
This class was pretty easy. Midterm and Final are the same format... Short Id's, "Long Id's," and an Essay. All are given to you ahead of time, so you have some idea of what to expect. I didn't do much reading, if any at all. One page summary of what you read for section, which is extremely easy to ****... Although she talks WAY too fast.
Lectures are interesting, engaging and exciting. Professor Hirsch does a great job of explaining the material and the course requirements are not excessive for a history course. Highly recommended!
She is very enthusiastic and a good lecturer. Fair amount of tests: mid-term, map quiz, debate, 5 page paper, and final. Not hard to get a B. Very interesting class.
Russian history 2.5 hour seminar class once a week. too long of a class to pay attention in, but we had some good discussions. i enjoyed a sub we had one time, professor mcdonald, more than hirsch, but she's not bad. assigns too much damn reading though...many of my classmates insist she's the devil.
