This class is an easy A. The lectures are quite boring, but all recordings are posted online. The exams are MCQ based and very straightforward. Overall would recommend taking this class if you are not an economics major.
Intro to Microeconomics with Prof. Flanagan was the easiest class I have ever taken. The class is very test heavy, but they are almost exactly the same as the practice tests, with the numbers changed slightly. Lectures are recorded as well which is nice. Take his class.
really good guy, no attendance required, easy exam.
The class was extremely easy both in content and in the fact that everything you need for the test is on the lecture slides he posts and the discussion worksheets he also posts. Didn't show up to lecture or discussions and made it out with an easy A.
horrible instructor
His class way very straightforward. I didn't attend lecture but watched all the recordings and did the homework and reviews and felt 100% prepared for exams which were just like the homework/practice exams. He covers things very clearly, and I think I took for granted how nice it was to know exactly what I was expected to be able to do.
Do not have the ability to organize a class well. Unclear and bizarre
Likes use his titles to suppress conversations.
ECON 101 with professor Fran Flanagan was a very easy class. The lectures are a little monotonous and boring but they are recorded. The exams are quite easy, purely based on the lecture slides. The best thing about this class in particular is that everything you need for the exams is in the slides. No textbooks or external resources needed.
Always drew graphs to make content more clear, which were extremely helpful on the tests. Tests are most of your grade but they really weren't that hard. Lectures were recorded.
Prof Flanagan's lectures, though not the most interesting, was clear and to the point. Go to lecture and discussion sections to best understand the material. Sections go through practice problems and review concepts introduced in lecture. He provides practice homework, practice exams, and all lectures recorded on Canvas. Very helpful professor.
Fran is a great professor. He made an intro class extremely interesting and easy to follow, connecting topics to relevant current events, which I found to be intriguing. He's super nice and understanding when it comes to makeups or outside problems. The class is 80% tests, but they're a walk in the park---almost identical to the practice tests.
Not very engaging lectures, would often go off on tangents that were unrelated to the scope of the class which made it easy to check out a little bit. Kind of difficult to do well based on a weird structure he has for how grades are given. No textbook makes the practice exams he gives the only way to study for tests, but they are helpful at least.
Professor Flanagan made Econ 101 VERY easy. Discussions and lectures are not required attendance so I chose to watch all of them online, which was great for my schedule. He practically gives you the exam and homework questions beforehand - just study and you should get an A on them. Exams are 80% of grade but easy if you understand the content.
A great professor and a great class. Exam heavy class. The first two exams were fairly straightforward. The final exam was immensely difficult, ended up tanking my grade. Be ready to study as this class is clearly not an introductory course.
Hard tests and no curve compared to other instructors who teach the same class. Finals are usually open notes for other classes but not this class and has more questions compared to other finals. Office hours don't help with questions and not built around helping students learn.
The professor was not that engaging. He made the lectures very confusing. It was difficult to keep up with the lecturesit is test heavy. there is no textbook. The TA's rush through the content and don't bother to make sure you are doing good. There are only 2 midterms &1 final, so those count a lot. better do well or your grade will suffer
He was very rude. I have experienced him using profanity at me which highly demotivated me from ever recommending him to anyone. While the tests are very easy and there is minimal work to be done, his attitude is what made him not worth taking.
This class is definitely tough but I think Fran did the best he could with the heavy content. He records all lectures which is super nice. Overall I really enjoyed the class and he made the dense content more understandable. Tests were hard but the practice exams matched the exams almost exactly so if you studied it usually went well.
At first I wasn't the biggest fan, but now I really think he was the best professor I could have taken for Econ 101. He sets the class up very simple. He posts practice homeworks and practice exams that are extremely similar to the actual homework and exams. Never any surprises on his homework or exams.
The professor is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about his craft. I thought the professor was chill. The lectures weren't the most engaging or entertaining, but hey, can't necessarily expect that in school. The grade is mostly dependent on the Canvas homework assignments and heavily affected by midterm performance. So, be sure to study up!
I was scared to take ECON101, but I could not have had a better experience. You can tell how much he knows about the topic of economics. He may be a bit boring, but he is beyond helpful and smart. Graded on 12 HW assignments, and three exams, lowest two HW are dropped. The lecture is not mandatory, but I recommend going 10/10. Lectures are posted
Flanagan is a very nice professor and his slides are organized. However, he is often unclear about what he's talking about so it gets quite confusing at time. Although attendance isn't required I would still recommend going as a lot of times he gets side tracked and it isn't clear from the slides.
Fran Flanagan is a great professor and a great guy. The class is not that hard in my opinion. He makes concepts very easy to understand with his clear slides and examples in class. His homeworks and practice exams are very similar to the exams. His office hours are also very chill. I definitely recommend taking econ with him
Fran is a nice person. Only wish he could put more effort in his Econ teaching.
Fran is a hilarious person. His lecture is interesting. However, I'm having a difficult time understanding the main focus of the lecture. And his response during office hours doesn't help a lot. He also likes to talk about his kids during office hours, which is quite interesting.
you will love him
Lectures can be a bit wordy, but homework is extremely straightforward and kind of summarizes the main points he talks about. Exams were very fair. I enjoyed the style of the class!
This was the first time this class was ever taught and Fran did a solid job IMO. Lecture def not mandatory but I went to them all (u could def get away w not doing so tho). 5 short HW assignments that take maybe an hour each, 1 midterm, 1 final and final paper. I thought he graded fairly, only wish a 90 was an A. Didn't have to study much though.
Fran is a caring professor, but sometimes make the lecture quite boring and unorganized. Some key points tested in homework questions are never mentioned in his lecture.
Fran's course material is usually not interesting. You can't learn too much from the lecture. Even if you go to office hours, he doesn't care what you are asking, and therefore cannot give clear response which makes you confused.
Prof Flanagan is a great guy. He taught Econ 301 with ease. He makes things look easy. Recommend taking 301 with him compared to other professors. The A however is 93 above, so its pretty competitive to get A in this class. I love how he divided the lectures and all the materials nicely.
The lecture is sometimes boring and the homework is sometimes tricky. Attending the discussion session is more useful than the lecture. Professor usually do not reply emails in a time manner, so don't expect too much feedbacks.

Econ 301 wasn't bad, but some things were glossed over in lectures. About 85% of the points in the class are from the 2 midterms and one final exam. The remaining are 2 point weekly quizzes that open Thurs and close Sun night. Attendance for lectures is definitely not necessary, probably saw half the class only 3 times the whole semester - at tests
Fran is a wonderful teacher with a deep care for his students and economics. I would highly recommend his classes to any undergraduate at UW-Madison.
The prof is amazing. Going to lectures is not at all needed. He gives slides which are enough for his examinations. His midterms and finals are online and the papers are very easy. So do not worry about getting an A in this class as it is very simple.
I am taking Micro with him spring of 2023, and he is not as bad as all of these reviews make him seem. He is very clear about everything he lectures about, and all lectures are recorded so you don't have to attend in person. There are more midterms than the other micro professors, but your lowest midterm grade gets dropped.
Im in Spring 2023 and Flanagan has improved since Fall 2022. The wording of his tests aren't as confusing as the 2022 reviews say(we use 2022 tests as practice so I know). He is unenthusiastic about the content and is often confusing, but I think he'll improve as a professor since this was his first year. Open note exams, so take lots of lec notes
Your grade consists of 5 timed open note exams, weekly homework, and a final exam. However, the exams and homework were worded poorly and extremely confusing. Unless you were able to take note of every single thing he said, it was difficult to understand the content. Exams had brand new topics we were expected to just "know how to figure out"
Really nice guy and lectures were easy to follow. All quizzes and exams were open note, which made the class a lot easier. Grades are based on a weekly homework assignment, five midterm exams, and then one final exam. The wording on exams was kinda confusing though.
Very nice guy but quizzes were confusing in their wording. Same with homework. One homework assignment due on mondays every week and then a quiz every 2 weeks or so. 5 quizzes in total and the final exam. TAs even get confused and get things wrong.
If you can choose any other professor for economics, do! He makes his own tests, and the wording is so confusing, even the TA's get the questions wrong/are confused. 5 exams plus a final exam, and most of the questions on the exams would not correlate with the homework or lectures.
he made this class way more confusing than it needed to be. It was his first year teaching here but the TA taught me more in 50 minutes than he did in any lectures. The exams would have questions that even stumped the TAs and the average would be a D and he still wouldn't curve the tests. Don't make econ101 harder than needs to be with him
Nice guy but gives terrible lectures. Discussions are helpful if you have a good TA. Exams are extremely difficult and stressful, but are online.
Not a good lecturer, sometimes would admit he didn't fully know content, wasn't very helpful when preparing for exams or homework. Exams were online open book but had content we had never gone over. Was stressful and confusing.
Nice guy, but the lectures are a little dry. There aren't many problems worked on in class which was an issue for me. The exams were difficult and sometimes poorly worded.
I really enjoyed having Fran as a professor. The course content was rather difficult to study and understand but in terms of presenting lecture content and expectations in exams and weekly homework, he was straight forward with what was going to be covered. Overall, he was really thoughtful and make econ easy to digest as an intro course.
Flanagan is an excellent professor, and I wish I could take 522 with him again. His exams are straightforward questions that, if you understand the mechanics of the homework, will not give you trouble. I have really enjoyed his lecture style, and he is very straightforward/ doesn't make the coursework more complicated than it has to be. Great class
Professor Flanagan is a wonderful professor and if you get a chance to take one of his classes, you definitely should. I'm taking Law and Econ with him and he is so passionate about the course material which makes the lectures engaging and useful. Exams aren't easy but they are very fair. Can't recommend this class/professor enough!
Flanagans lectures were pretty boring/average. You have to pay attention to understand the weekly homework quizzes. The exams were taken online and were open note but they are really difficult so it is hard to get a good grade on them. No attendance taken but discussions were extremely helpful. He posts recordings of the lecture + notes.
He literally makes trick questions on the exams that no one understands. He will say in class "You guys didn't do good on this I need to make the exams easier but I will not curve them." His TAs literally get questions wrong on the exams and he still thinks that it's justifiable. Pulls questions out of his ass.
