She is very helpful and enthusiastic. I really enjoyed her class because the literature was extremely interesting. I would recommend this class to anyone who likes good literature. She did very well at explaining the books or other readings that we had. She had an accent but she spoke English fluently.Rate My Professors ↗

There are one map assignment,2 papers, take-home midterm and final exams which are very convenient!(at least for me) Although her English is not really good, but I think at least she tried to improve it. Midterm & Final are TAKE HOME, which is fabulous. But there are three different books you have to glean the info from, and u cant go online because page numbers from where you found the answers are required.She is a very nice woman, but the language barrier is extreme. Professor Derin is very nice, but her lectures could be a little unorganized/hard to follow. She has a lot of knowledge about the Middle East and would probably be willing to sit down with you one on one if you were having trouble with anything.Rate My Professors ↗

Prof Derin has good intentions. However, she will mention topics/events and ask "our opinions" and just stand there waiting. The only teaching comes from other students who speak. She doesn't actually teach any material, she simply moves on. I know a considerable amount about about the Middle East and I don't know WHAT she is talking about.
