As long as you pay attention in lectures, you'll get an A and you do NOT need to get the textbooks. She is a really great lecturer, and you can tell she is passionate about the subject, although she can go a little fast sometimes. I'm not a fan of the content in the course itself, but prof Hsia made it pretty interesting.
If you attend lecture, don't buy the books. Skim the assigned reading before discussion and you'll do just fine. You can tell she love watch she teaches which I'm thankful for since that made me dread the walk to Humanities building a little less. Overall, she is the perfect professor the course. Highly recommend for STEM majors that need gen ed.
Hist Sci 201 was not that hard of a class, just a lot of reading. I didn't go to lectures that much because florence's lectures didn't seem that useful. A lot of useless information that you didn't really need for exams or quizzes. She is very nice however and knows what shes doing. I never went to office hours so that could also be something
Professor Hsia was great! She seemed very passionate about the content, which made the lectures more interesting. The class itself was fairly interesting, although be prepared for lots of reading (most of the important content on quizzes is discussed in lecture). I would definitely recommend Professor Hsia!
Dr. Hsia gives phenomenal lectures- she is clearly well learned in the course material, and presents it like an immersive story. This does mean that attending lecture is necessary. Sometimes lecture content is quite fast paced and hard to follow, but the assignments, quizzes and exams are easy to pass if you apply yourself a little.
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. She covers everything you need to know in lectures, so you'll want to go to those instead of reading the 60 pages in the textbook.
literally my favorite and easiest class this semester. lectures are important because she covers all of the content for the open-note weekly quizzes. discussion is weighted heavily, so as long as you do your homework and show up, you will get an A. no final, just 3 unit exams which are online and open-note too. she's really great, i learned a lot!
Professor Hsia is a wonderful teacher. She is really passionate about her subject and her passion makes all of her lectures interesting. There are a lot of required readings, but if you prioritize the important ones you can get through the class with little difficulty.
Professor Hsia is great! She is clearly very passionate about what she teaches and she cares about her students. The class itself I found a bit difficult, but she provides a ton of support! Definitely recommend a class with her if you have the opportunity!
She was a great teacher, spoke very clearly, and helped with my disabilities as well! Was very patience with me and did not argue once when I requested a lecture video.
Very good professor, the information in the lectures were fascinating, and although I tended to almost always fall asleep in them I learned a lot just from the lecture. the class was pretty heavy on the readings and quizzes where good ways to prep for exams. Reading is necessary to do well on exams also.
Fortunately, I enjoyed Professor Hsia's lectures because in order to do well you have to attend. No slides or recordings are posted, and you can't learn the content from reading only. We had a quiz every week and three unit exams each consisting of 2 essays and multiple choice questions (each test 10% of grade) No Final! Overall intersting content!
If you are not an auditory learner DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Her lectures were basically useless because all she did was speak and did not have any note slides and didnt write anything down that was useful. I had to outline the textbook myself to learn anything.
Prof. Hsia is amazing! Her lectures are enjoyable and interesting, and she is clearly extremely knowledgable and passionate about the content. There is a lot of assigned reading, but honestly if you attend lecture and discussion you can get away with skimming the texts. Highly recommend a class with this professor
Im not an auditory learner and Professor Hsias method of lecture was very difficult for me to process and learn the necessary information. She writes key words on the chalkboards, but it was still very difficult for me to remember the class material. Its not a bad class though, the material is interesting.
Prof Hsia is enthusiastic about her trade, and it shows. Lectures are pretty engaging. Textbooks aren't strictly necessary, I bought them and used them maybe 3 times. Bi-weekly quizzes in discussion can be a little difficult - you have to go to class or do the reading, but not both. Final exam is a 1500 word essay.
Solid professor that gives enjoyable lectures. If you're looking for a less-than-average difficulty class that's still very interesting then you can't go wrong here.
Prof Hisa is great! She made the quite difficult task of learning about 2000 years of science history quite easy, and I can say I learned a lot. Her lectures are great and informative. Just make sure not to doze off because you'll be totally lost when you wake up.
Prof. Hsia is a really engaging lecturer and the class flies by. She uses the chalkboard and doesn't have slides, so it's important to go to class. But if you go to class, you'll do fine on the exams! Definitely take this class if you're looking for an easy science credit.
Professor Hsia is an amazing lecturer. I took this class to satisfy a requirement, but I ended up getting so much out of it, and a big part of that was due to Professor Hsia. I would absolutely take a class with her again, and I recommend ILS 201 for a relatively easy, low-stress science class.
I was not a fan of the material for this course (I took it solely because it is an easier natural science credit), but Prof Hsia made a boring topic as interesting and simplified as possible! She was really passionate about the topic, which I appreciated. One thing to note is that she writes notes on the board as she goes, which can be confusing.
I would recommend this class to anyone needing an easy natural science or humanities credit.
Prof Hsia made a boring required science class incredibly interesting. Her lectures have funny stories and she makes class worth going to. Both Hsia and the TAs love what they do and they're beyond willing to help, which makes the class easy. Read the textbooks and pay attention during lecture and you'll do great, it's not a hard class to pass.
Never did the assigned readings, just paid attention in lectures and still got an A. Hsia is a really good lecturer.
I love Prof. Hsia! She made lectures interesting and is a very likable person. I highly recommend her and this class.
History of Science sounds interesting but it's actually pretty dry. Don't think I would take this class again because I got way too bored. However. Professor Hsia is a good lecturer, very organized. There are two tests that are pretty easy. The final is just a five page essay-- but going back to look for stuff in the textbook is a pain.
Professor Hsia gives amazing lectures by explaining concepts verbally with major concepts or names written on the chalkboard. She uses lots of primary examples to explain concepts. Discussions are really helpful, and if you miss lecture the notes are posted on Learn@UW before exams. Definitely one of my favorite professors.
Lectures can get really long and boring but sometimes are interesting. Other than that the class is relatively easy as long as you study and show up to discussion.
The class is very interesting!
Professor Hsia is pretty great and passionate about what she teaches but the subject could be made less boring because it's pretty interesting stuff. There were two multiple choice tests, a final essay, and a bunch of stupid things in discussion. Read the super boring book and you'll be golden.
Great teacher and passionate about what she's teaching. There is a lot of content per lecture and notes are a must, even though sometimes they might be a little too much to really catch what she's saying. A lot of the lecture was reviewing the materials we were to supposed to have done prior to lecture.
Prof. Hsia's lectures are difficult to follow. Taking notes becomes incredibly tough.
Keeps lectures short, but they are a bit dull. Seemed to mostly be a review of the assigned readings. Exams are pretty easy.
Although the material is dreadfully boring, she makes it interesting enough to keep you awake. This class is heavily focused on the readings assigned. You won't pass it with an A without reading almost all of them(I made this mistake). Although you do need the required textbook, most readings are posted exclusively online.
As mentioned in other comments, her lectures can be quite boring but she does her best to make them interesting. Very knowledgeable about the course material. I did the honors option which is worth taking. The course as whole was not great for me because I did not like the subject material but if ancient philosophy is your thing, not a bad class
Lectures are extemely dry, but to be fair, she makes the most out of boring material. Tends to randomly scribble things on the board. Exams are not to bad. Solid professor, boring material.
I loved this class. Hsia makes lectures very straighforward and easy to understand. She always explains the readings in lecture. TA's also very good.
Hsia is great. Personally I didn't like the class (HistSci 201) but overall I learned a lot. Exams are pretty straight forward, but are fairly difficult.
For humanities credit, I would definitely recommend Hist. Sci. 201 with Professor Hsia. Readings help with comprehension, but the exams are straight out of lecture, which is extremely clear. Studying and preparing is a must to do well, but with some effort, this class is a great addition to a semester.
She is so clear in her explanations and lectures. The tests are very reasonable and the final essay (which is the final exam) is not bad at all. Honors credit is a few assignments which I thought were worth my time in what was learned.
Ungodly boring lecturer, put people to sleep like Nyquil. Tests are consistent to reading material and use mostly material from course reader. Sticks to an outline well and if you can stay awake the lecture material is really helpful.
Prof. Hsia gives a pretty dry lecture, but does an alright job of explaining everything. The exams aren't too bad, just matching and a short essay, and the last exam is a take home essay.
Professor Hsia makes a potentially boring topic pretty interesting and is super straightforward with her expectations. Take it for honors-- the project is super easy and doesn't even count as part of your grade, just completion credit. Final exam is a take-home essay.
Hsia is a great lecturer, makes hard concepts easy to understand. Go to lecture! Exams can be difficult, but if you understand the concepts you will do well. Topics were interesting and this is a good class for those who do not want to take a hands on science class.
VERY clear lectures, and does a fantastic job of extracting big ideas from long readings. Just going to lecture and listening actively will result in a decent grade. Excellent TAs as well. Course material is quite interesting - and is appealing even/especially to those with no interest in science in and of itself. Good professor, great class.
great professor, clarifies complex ideas in class, class can be extremely boring, however its not hard at all. Second midterm is 10 matching and then a turn in essay that you do at home. the Final is a take home essay, enough said.
Honors component is 2 small papers. Either go to lecture and take good notes or read the textbooks. Hsia is a great professor--fierce, too. Scott Trigg is the best TA--he's smarter than all the others!
Hsia was awesome, and so was Scott Trigg. This class was the highlight of my semester.
This class was pretty interesting. Prof Hsia is a clear lecturer (she uses a mic) and is good at explaining points that the book excludes/glosses over. The midterms are fair tests of the material covered in the class. Some of the classical readings are pretty interesting too, even if some of them are just impossible to read. Good class, good prof.
I found this class extremely interesting, but I can see how some would find it boring- it could really go either way, depending on your interest level and motivation. Regardless, it's super easy and counts as science, so that's cool. Hsia is a good lecturer, and take it with Kellen Backer as your TA if at all possible.
I blindly took this class to get the natural science credits, and it was so incredibly boring. However, I rarely attended lecture and still got an A, though I did work pretty hard on the papers. I would also like to defend Lynette--I thought she was fair and pleasant.
Interesting class--flo is awesome! Her lectures got long somtimes but if you actively take good notes it's okay. Plus, the things she says in lecture help with the exam IDs and essay questions. Your grade depends solely on your TAs--you'll do well if they like you & your writing. Stay clear of lynnette for a TA she's useless and an unfair grader.
Lectures will put you to sleep but the class is pretty easy- you get all the info you need and exams are mostly take home. Flo is hilarious... she talked about squirrels a lot.
this class isnt too bad, exams are take home papers, not all that interesting
Very boring lectures, although the material is interesting if you are into history. Easy science credit, I reccomend it to any non-science people looking to pick up the gen-ed. Overall, I am glad I took the course, the material is all very interesting and it wasn't too demanding, although you really do need to do all the readings and attend section
Most boring class. Ever. Exams were pretty easy (in class IDs and a take home essay). Never attended lecture because she lectured right out of the book and still got an A. easy science credit, if the boredom doesn't kill you.
professor hsia is super nice and very approachable. her lectures were clear...but really, really, Really boring. if history of science doesn't interest you in the slightest, think twice before taking this. don't go in w/ the mindset that it's going to be a slacker class...
Florence Hsia is such a funny teacher! She tends to be repetitive in her lectures, but I know she does it to make sure her students understand. She is very good at describing difficult concepts and is overrall a very nice lady.
I absolutly loved this class. Hsia is interesting and funny, and its an awesome way to fulfill science credits if you're not that into science- it's basically a history course.
Stupid class, passable teacher. I get the impression that she's very interesting in lectures she actually cares about, but i could be wrong.
bring a pillow
I enjoyed the class. I thought it was interesting and very-well explained. I felt I was extremely well prepared for everything that was asked of me.
a really boring and pointless class. since the final is a take-home exam, reading the books for the last portion of the class is pretty pointless.
I stopped going to lecture and never read the books. Totally worthless and boring class. Fortunely though, it is pretty easy. Most of the exams are take-home (2 of the 3), which is great if you take the class with friends. Whatever, it satisfies 3 credits of natural science.
A relatively easy class. You can pretty much either choose to go to lecture or read the books. Lecture can be a little dull, but she goes slow and clarifies the subject matter quite well. Nice woman, too.
She is so nice, but she sometimes gets extremely off topic during her lectures and often repeats the same thing in about 5 different ways before moving onto the next subject. She very likable and approachable, but bringing something to help keep you awake during lectures isn't a bad idea.
long, boring lecture that probably could be condensed, but oh well, it knocks off natural sci requirement with relative ease
Easy class, kind of boring lectures. No real need to do the readings other than to reinforce what's said in lecture (or vice versa). After the first month I stopped doing the readings, and I'm pulling an A right now. Good class to take for Natural science requirement.
lectures are EXTREMELY boring, and she repeats the same phrase over and over until youre too spaced out to notice. T. A. s are very helpful though, and professor Hsia is easy to talk to and hard to dislike. No homework, and youre given the test questions before the test. Read the book and youre good to go
Soo boring, but the proffesor is nice and the TA very helpful. I never read any of the material and got a B.
sweet woman, very accessible and willing to help. class can be a little boring, but what you space out for during lecture you can recover easily in books, course reader, or on the net. interesting subject matter...not intensely difficult course structure
very clear & understandable speaker even though it was a huge lecture. much more interesting than the next class in the sequence, taught by a different professor.
