Lectures were posted online so not many people came to them. There are only 2 exams total and they are not that bad as long as you study and remember information from the lectures. The readings and HW assignments are not that bad and the stuff you read will most likely be in the lectures. Also was not a huge fan of discussions.
Professor Elwert's sociology class covers a lot of material, but the exams are unclear, and he provides vague advice during office hours, making tasks seem easier/simpler than they are. Grading is tough, and it takes over a month to receive grades on exams and essays. Additionally, he is often rude and impatient with his TAs, who work hard.
Very kind and caring professor, people saying he crashed out over people not attending lectures arent giving whole story. he just wants people to do good in his class and noticed a correlation with people who dont go to lecture and people who did poorly on his tests. Tests are hard so study everything, start collecting articles sooner, trust me.
This entry-level course was harder than expected and tanked my GPA. His lectures are extremely boring and he yelled at our class for no one showing up when he willingly posts video lectures online. Overall did not enjoy this class the two exams you take all semester are extremely hard and not graded nicely.
Introductory course with graduate-level expectations. Unfortunately, Felix started yelling and crashing out on our lecture because "too many people are watching virtually". Why would you offer it if you are going to complain when people use it? Not up to my expectations for learning.
hes funny and cares about his work
nice but tough grader
He was entertaining to listen to; lectures were mainly just summaries of the pre-class readings. Tests cover ALL information, so thoroughly review before the exams - especially the specific statistics as they will probably require you to know the exact values. The news assignments are graded toughly and getting an A on them is competitive.
(Fall 2020) This course is very content heavy and may be difficult for some people, however, the content is applicable anywhere and just generally interesting. He is very direct during lectures which is nice. The textbook was a "easy" read but again, could be content heavy. I recommend a lot of flash cards and rewriting notes!
Horrible professor, DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH PROF. ELWERT. He has a god complex and is one of the worst professors I have ever had to deal with. May God be with the students who suffer his course.
Prof Elwert is a very intelligent and witty guy. I enjoyed his lectures and talking with him during office hours. The material is easy to grasp, but the things that are graded is hard bc there is so much. I loved Prof Elwert as a person, highly rec going to office hours. Sadly, this class is so hard to get an A in bc of the curve.
Took this class for a social science hoping for an easy A, unfortunately that didn't work out to well. READ THE FREAKIN TEXTBOOK AND READINGS. It's literally the only thing tests and assignments are based on. Dr. Elwert is a great guy, and quite witty I'd say. TA's are helpful, you have to show up and actually participate in discussion.
Took for the easy A. Only 15% of 300 ppl get above an A. 4 things go into grade book, two major exams & two papers. The papers are 300 words BUT are graded very hard & have an extreme amt of rules to abide. Exams are graded on a big curve which is nice bc they were brutal. nice/ funny guy but lectures are long and boring. i hate soc so not my fav.
discussions are mandatory, but lecture isn't. that being said, the key to success is reading the textbook and attending lecture and going to the professor or TAs for clarification is super helpful. prof. elwert is very approachable, but his class is very stats heavy and the tests can be difficult bc there's so much information to memorize.
Overall, Felix was decently engaging and was passionate about the class. But between the hard tests (lots to know about history, trends, and stats), news reflections, and readings, this class wasn't what I'd hoped it would be. News reflections had lots of criteria to fit into 300 words and my TA just handed us a worksheet for discussion. 18% get As
The lectures weren't boring; however, the exams were hard. It was hard to study for the exam and readings were incredibly boring. I wasted $50 for an online textbook for a class that I didn't need the credit for. Overall Felix Elwert kept the class engaged and was an interesting professor.
Cool dude, and his lectures are very interesting. It's not all entirely stats, so he makes good points. He cares for his students and actually sounds interested when he gives lectures. The readings aren't bad at times. Just split the readings everyday until the due date. Otherwise it's an easy class!.. only if you actually read the material
Professor Elwert unfortunately has an egotistical way about him that makes his lectures hard to listen to. He does not provide clear directions or grading criteria for assignments and exam questions are extremely specific and statistical. Be prepared to read a lot.
Professor Elwert is a wonderful lecturer! The class is super interesting and he's passionate about sociology. The class is basically graded on two heavy exams and two papers, but if you attend lectures and take good notes then it's not an issue. I didn't even have to read any of the required readings/ textbook. I would recommend him.
This was legitimately the hardest and worst class I've ever taken and I've taken all of the Ochems. What professor only gives out 18% A's after a curve?? He expects you to memorize every lecture slide and the entire textbook over the course of the semester for his absurd exams. Worst introductory sociology class ever, avoid Felix at all costs.
If you are trying to satisfy a sociology requirement, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Only 20% of students get A's, his class is based off of two midterms that are way more difficult than they need to be, and he doesn't understand his students are not sociology majors. His grading scale is unfair and in turn, hurts students even if you do well.
Do not take this class. Dr. Elwert does not like to give As and makes the tests nearly impossible. I am more worried about my grade in this class than my bio 152 and organic chemsitry course
The exams are on the harder side because he loves stats and data. The overall grade is curved. 2 exams (final not cumulative) and weekly quizzes on the textbook. He's got a cool accent and he's pretty funny.
I am sorry but I do not know where all these good reviews about Professor Elwert come from but the reality is that his lectures and curriculum are bad. I tend to look for the good aspects of my professors but this man doesn't understand his demographic is non-Sociology majors. He puts WAY to much detail into this lectures and is INCREDIBLY boring.
All semester, I wished that a meteor would fall out of the sky and flatten me so I wouldn't have to keep taking the class. Felix is a nice enough person, but the content of this course is miserable. It is 20-30 hours per week and he knows it but doesn't change anything. The tests are written like rubix cubes -- good luck to those who must suffer.
Professor Elwert's lectures are very interesting. Although lecture isn't mandatory, the majority of what is on the test is covered thoroughly in lecture. He doesn't just summarize the textbook in lecture, but talks about many different interesting things. He comes off as strict at first but he's very fair.
I LOVED taking his SOC 120 class. He has some strict grading policies for the papers you write, but they aren't hard to follow. You have to attend the discussion, but don't have to attend Lecture (but if you want an A you should attend lecture). The readings only require a cursory look if you attend lecture and discussion.
He's very passionate about Sociology and always tries to make lecture enjoyable. That said, lecture is definitely NOT required. His lectures are summaries of the readings, so if you do ALL the readings (and you should), you don't have to go to lecture. Make sure you thoroughly review the topics on his lecture slides for tests. No final. Good class
Grading was unfair. He only allows a certain number of As. Therefore, you could get As on both midterms and still get a B. I got a C on participation even after participating constantly just because he doesnt want to give too many As. There is a LOT of reading for this class. Content of class is interesting but yet his lectures are boring.
Felix is a very passionate lecturer, solid choice for a professor. Cares about students. He does a lot of review in lecture. Discussion section for this class is pretty pointless, but don't think this is an easy A. The class is only graded on 2 exams and 2 short writings. You have to remember stats and trends.
Lots of readings, all of which I would recommend doing. Attendance is not mandatory since the lecture slides are posted online. Make sure you do well on the midterms and news reports, however, since the class is only graded on four things (2 exams and 2 short essays).
Lecture slides are uploaded online the night before each lecture. About half of each lecture is review of the previous lecture, which is annoying as he then scrambles to finish the current lecture's material. Grade is mostly 2 short papers & 2 midterms(no final!). Midterms are HEAVILY based on lecture, readings are informational but not mandatory.
Lecture isn't mandatory but HIGHLY recommended, he clarifies things talked about in the readings. Lecture is interesting cause hes passionate and engaging. If you don't read, you won't pass. Grade is based on two midterms (no final during finals week), 2 news reflections (kinda hard but not too difficult), and weekly quizzes. Love his teaching.
Prof Elwert basically reads off all his slides and goes on lots of tangents- sometimes he spends 30 minutes on one slide. Grade is only based on 2 papers & 2 midterms. Lecture slides are available online which is nice. Wouldn't say this an easy A class but definitely study the slides & do the readings.
Great teacher and charismatic. However, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS if you think it's going to be an easy A for a pre-requisite class. It's not even my major and I thought it was going to be easy, but I worked harder in this class than my own major! Definitely interesting but Elwert is all about statistics so you have to memorize stupid numbers & trends.
Not even a real professor; but a guy on a power trip, basically. I'm a good student (double major, and a certificate, honors list) and this class was awful. SUPER disorganized, the exam questions were ambiguous & nit-picky. Not to mention, Felix is not nice - never in my life have I had another human being treat me with such disrespect as Felix.
Took this class as an INTRO sociology class for easy A and to meet prerequisites for medical school. The course is mainly graded on two midterms that are comprised of dated regurgitated statistics with little application value. He curves this class, again an intro class, to only top 15% receive As. I would highly recommend a different professor.
Felix was really good at giving lectures and explaining everything clear enough to understand. His lecture slides were organized and attendance is not mandatory for lecture. Discussion you have to talk a lot to get participation points. Some topics that were not covered in lecture may appear on the exams, he assigns a lot of reading for homework.
Felix is funny and has a cool accent. This class is pretty easy, only graded on 2 midterms and 2 short news reflections. He is really interested in the statistics so you'll have to memorize those. Section is really pointless, and you don't have to go to every lecture as long as you can get the notes from someone. Definitely have to read the book.
Elwert is very passionate about marriage in the family and that makes this course that much more interesting! He really like the statistics so make sure to have them memorized for the exam. Also even if he doesn't talk about the readings in lecture, expect them to be on the exam. Great course and great professor! I recommend him to anyone.
I absolutely loved this class. Professor Elwert is so enthusiastic about this course and is always willing to help students succeed. You must read all the required readings, not only from the textbook, but also from the articles he posts online. Tests are a bit difficult, but if you study hard enough, it's definitely possible to do well.
Elwert is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and tries to instill that passion on to his students. Lecture and information was interesting, relevant information for anyone. A lot of readings, exams were fair if you studied the appropriate material and did the readings. Very helpful at office hours. Adorable accent.
for a 100 level class, the grading is definitely more difficult than expected. i would recommend attending lecture as he goes very in depth about the topics. print slides online. do the required readings, as there are questions about them on the exams. be prepared to put in time and effort. but overall very interesting class. he's very intelligent
The best professor I have had at Madison so far. Great accent, and really enthusiastic about what he is teaching.
Felix was fabulous. Super interesting and funny. Excellent speaker. Go to lecture and listen and you'll be golden for the exams. It was a crazy easy class but I actually enjoyed it!
He's extremely enthusiastic about sociology and he teaches it well. There are a lot of "required" readings but I never read any of them and I did pretty well. Everything is off lecture. When it comes to tests, KNOW YOUR STATS/NUMBERS/TRENDS! He loves putting those on tests.
Professor is really annoying. He assigns A LOT of reading. If you attend the lectures you shouldnt have a problem with getting a decent grade but the essays and discussion attendance are graded very harshly.
This guy is quite the character. Felix is a bit odd but has so much passion for the class. Simply go to lecture and you'll be fine exam stuff comes right of the slides so it's basically memorization. Any reading info that will be on the exam he will make note of it during lecture. Great professor, highly recommend the class
Very good professor, the class is very interesting and he's so excited to teach the class. Often would jump across the stage with so much excitement with what he's talking about.
Terrible professor. Changes the syllabus two days before the final. Very arrogant.
He's incredibly helpful. He makes sure to ask if there are any questions even though its a lecture of 300. All of his powerpoint are well done as well. The readings can help just to refresh the lecture but aren't really necessary.
Skinny German man. Cute accent. Gets through all material. Sections very useful. Answers all questions. Midterms, finals, and papers easy
Professor Elwert teaches a huge lecture, but tried his best to be clear on the information and always accepts questions, even though there is also a corresponding discussion. Ultimately, he's a great professor.
Basically, go to lecture and go to section. take notes on your powerpoint slides and that is all you will need to study for the exam. The book is a waste of time, yet might make the difference if you dont understand the material. It shouldnt be difficult if you make sure to attend every lecture
class grade is made up of 3 exams, 1 paper, and section participation. must study to receive a good grade. don't slack off unless you want a bad grade. elwert is a good lecturer, slides are online. can be an easy A if you study before exams. all memorization. very interesting topics on the family.
U dont have to go to class, exams come right off the lecture slides, pretty easy to get an AB, first midterm was harder than expected, second one was a joke! 1 paper, not bad at all!
Pretty neat guy with a cool sense of humor. Lecture is pretty boring, but exams are basically taken off of lecture slides that he provides to you. He "requires" you read the book and says it's fair game for exams but in lecture he'll single out pages of the book you need to read for the exams. Besides those pages, I never read the book and did fine
Really helpful in office hours. Easy to understand in lecture. Makes clear powerpoints.
Really funny professor. Lecture is not mandatory, section is. He takes questions from the exams off lecture slides, but don't skip lecture, he says things that aren't on the slides, but are on exams. You really don't have to do the readings. I did at first, but at the end stopped reading and I did fine on the final.
The exams come straight off the lecture slides, so as long as you get the lecture slides you will do well.
nice guy...lectures and readings are pretty useless, just look at the lecture slides and you should be fine
Like my predecessors, he is a weird guy. Reading the book is completley useless. For section statements, simply read one paragraph in the designated chapter and ask a question. Go to lecture, but bring your cell phone because it is extremely long (1.25 hrs). Make flashcards based on main points on lecture slide. Discussion is ok.
He is a great professor. You have to go to class, reading the book will help you get an A. He is very friendly and helpful. The class is easy as long as you keep up with the lecture slides and reading.
This class is pretty easy. It helps to go to the lectures, but he posts the slides online so it's not a big deal if you miss a few. The required readings are definitely not completely necessary but I do think that they help. Plus the material can be pretty interesting. I recommend the class.
This professor is sooooo weird. He spends half the time worrying about students leaving half way through rather than going on with lecture. You don't really have to read the reading just make sure you attend lecture. I would much rather have a professor I enjoy, he is irritating some what annoying.
Class isn't hard but the prof is weird. GO to lecture, he gets almost all of the material for the test from them. Stopped reading the book after the first test and I still did better on the second test.
