Raimy is pretty unique as a prof and very blunt. His explanations are pretty entertaining. Class isn't easy but isn't hard either. Participation is not recorded which is nice but you shouldn't miss too many lectures.
Raimy definitely does his own thing, but his explanations are good. The grading policy is weird but fair.
Eric may seem intimidating because his class demands that you put the work in to be successful (which likely is the reasons for the so-so reviews), but this actually highlights why Eric is such a good prof; Eric makes you learn. He can also be witty at times. The homework is admittedly quite much but they help greatly in preparation of the exams.
Easily the best professor I've ever had! All of the work he gives you (while a bit frequent) is directly applicable to tests and never busywork. He is very passionate about the topic and is excited to get students to care as well. He is also THE MOST accessible prof on campus and genuinely encourages any and all questions! Would recommend to all!
He's enthusiastic and brings examples into the real world when students are having a hard time understanding him. He's funny, smart, and is more than available for help in office hours. I wish he taught more classes!
He's a really great professor. He knows what he's talking about and he's super enthusiastic about it, which is a quality I really appreciated in my professors. Sometimes he has a bit of trouble translating the things he knows into English his students can understand.
First third of the class is filled with tedious, time-consuming busy work. The attempt at inductive learning was decidedly ineffective. Grading system is frustratingly opaque. Not a terribly hard class, but expectations are not at all clear. Scoring of homework is somewhat unpredictable and inconsistent.
Good about him: well prepared, entertaining, helpful when you see him in his office hour. I think you will do well if you have only his class for the semester, lol. It's time consuming. And he can be mean, but it is reasonable. Very strict grade too. Sometimes his explanation makes things complicated.
Great Professor. I have taken three classes with Eric and I have loved them all. The homework he assigns can be time consuming, but that way you don't have to study as much for the test. He is funny and always understanding and available to meet and talk. You can tell he knows his stuff.
Unfortunately if you need to take phonology you have no choice but to take it with this horrible professor. I have literally nothing good to say about Eric or his class. His lectures don't make sense and then he expects you to apply it to extremely time consuming homework that takes over my whole life. And he is so rude..don't ever make him mad.
The homework is semi confusing, but the prof is flexible on office hours and explains all aspects of his requirements. The grading system is odd, but know that if you try hard and he sees it, it's almost a guaranteed A. Also, "quizzes" which are exams are way easier than most I've seen in college.
The one I spent most of my time but felt the least I gained. His homework is confusing especially using the prat one. The grade he gave students is also confusing. Why I got all the answers correct but only receive 3 out of 5????
Give extremely time-consuming homework and returns the homework with little to no explanation. The requirements are unclear and so is the grading. Would NOT recommend the class.
As has been said here before, he doesn't contextualize assignments at all - you do things without understanding why, which minimizes educational bang for your buck. This is especially true for the first part of the course, which is heavy on PRAAT software.
Assignments inane and without explanation. The class commands you to blindedly follow Raimy's prescribed procedures without you having any idea of what you're trying to "find". He puts himself in the position of high wizard and tells you it is for some pedagogical purpose. Don't take if not interested in "straight up linguistics".
Haven't finished the course yet, but so far, I really like him. He's funny, engaging, enthusiastic, very entertaining. His assignments can take A LOT of work, but he seems to be a fair grader. I also really enjoy the material.
Cool guy, very willing to help and offer feedback. A little vague on some of his directions/expectations sometimes, though. Interestingly, he noted that he toned down his "snarkiness" after realizing that Midwest students were much nicer that his former East Coast students--this may explain why some '05/'06 students didn't like him as much.
Why has no one else mentioned that Prf. Raimy is great eye candy?!
Solid. Not as bad as people say, in fact, one of the better ling. prof's in the dept. See him after class or at office hrs, take notes, and you'll do fine.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE HATERS, Raimy is a fantastic prof. Raimy teaches *linguistics* classes. Most of his students are future ESL teachers, and are frustrated that he doesn't tailor the material to them. One of the finest prof's I've had ...

Mixed feelings here. He gives loads of time-consuming homework and doesn't make expectations entirely clear. On the plus side, you'll definitely learn something about the subject matter. Also, I don't think he's nearly as bad personality-wise as one of my classmates here has said, but I think he does have a subtle bit of ego. Overall, B/B-
This guy reminds me of Jim Carey. He's lanky, dorky and makes a lot of jokes. He did grade a pretty small class on a tight curve, but if you learn what you talk about in class and apply it, it's not that hard to get a good grade. He's pretty funny too, and can be really helpful if you just ask.
Abrasive and vindictive little man. This guy was obviously the last one picked for kickball on the playground and, now, he's taking it out on the rest of us.
