One of the best professors I have had at UW. Incredibly passionate about their class and lectures. Made a good effort to learn people's names and encourage a fun environment through demonstrating their immaculate singing ability. I cannot recommend enough to take a class with Professor Hoyt.
Professor Hoyt is, by far, my favorite instructor I've had. He's very clearly passionate about the course he teaches, and wants to share that passion with every student in the class. His lectures are engaging and funny and he's incredibly helpful when meeting with him during office hours. Highly recommend taking any class he teaches.
He was so funny, and I loved how he made his lectures entertaining, even when discussing boring topics such as HTMI and CSS. I loved his Taylor Swift Karaoke, I wish he would be my professor for all my classes.
He is amazing. I want him as my teacher for ever Comm class I take in the future. He is knowledgeable, explains information, and truly cares about what he's teaching. Made lectures fun and entertaining. He is the best.
Eric Hoyt did a great job using examples from media and past students to communicate project expectations clearly. Attendance is taken in lecture, but it does not impact your grade. Textbook readings are not required whatsoever, and aren't very helpful for most of the projects. Everything you need, you can learn in lecture.
He was awesome, he cared, was funny, and it was an amazing class.
Professor Hoyt is such an amazing professor. He is so funny and genuinely cares about his students. I loved CA155 and it was not difficult whatsoever. I highly recommend this class and Professor Hoyt.
Eric is a super funny and great guy, but not an impressive professor. His lectures were extremely boring and I'm not sure why he has such high ratings, the general consensus would agree that most of us fell asleep at his lectures. This class has such cool content but is organized horribly, students are given little time to complete major projects.
His lectures were easy to understand, and his use of humor makes them engaging. He also cares both about what he is teaching and his students since he makes time to try and get to know as many people's name as possible.
Great teacher but I don't recommend the class. Had to buy textbooks and never ended up using them, a lot of the projects were similar to each other. Ended up getting a bad TA that never seemed to be much help even though she was an easy grader. Professor Hoyt was great though! Fun & engaging lectures but the asynchronous lectures dragged on...
Professor Hoyt has been one of the best professors I've had. He makes the content fun and shows personalized examples of topics like camera angles, lighting, etc. He has a dry sense of humor that never fails to pull a laugh out of students. I will say that sometimes the textbook readings were unnecessary, but overall, I would recommend CA 155.
Professor Hoyt was great! You learn a lot of useful stuff in this class if you're interested in creating media. It's overall a fun class and the exams aren't too hard (mid term and final), the only other assignments are the projects which are enjoyable and not too difficult if you pay attention in lab.
Hoyt is a great professor! He always manages to keep lectures fun and entertaining. He strives to know each of his students even in a big lecture group. TAs for class are raw, not good graders. Expect to not get grades back from TAs for months. Didnt get grades back from assignments before midtermstress.
Prof Eric's lectures were just amazing. You could see he is so good with video production and editing. He is a hilarious and nice person. I really just want to take another class with him when we go back in-person!
Super cool professor.
Absolutely loved him. You can tell he really cares about his students and puts so much effort into the lectures. A great class!
Hoyt was amazing, I loved going to class and thought he was the best prof I had that semester! There isn't any hw other than your media projects, so those can tank your grade if you don't do well but your TA is super helpful in lab. I wish I could take more classes with him!
Professor Hoyt is by far the best instructor I've had since enrolling at UW Madison. He's so good, in fact, that this class convinced me to pursue a second major in Comm Arts. :) He's hilarious, and great at teaching the material. You'll learn a lot, and his tests and assignments are incredibly fair. Don't pass him up, you'll regret it!!
Great professor and amazing TA!
Hoyt is a real gem. He kinda pushes his liberal politics during lectures sometimes but besides that he is a fantastic professor. Lectures for the most part are engaging and always inspirational. You feel like you can do anything if you take this class. There are lots of projects that consume alot of time but it's all productive hands - on work.
Best professor I've ever had. His exams were fair, his lectures were hilarious, and the material was made incredibly interesting. Even harder concepts like coding were made enjoyable. Seriously, take this class, Hoyt is the greatest!
Attendance is a large portion of the grade. There's always a project going on, but they're graded extremely easily. Lowest grade I know of was 82. There's three group projects and they are taken extremely seriously. This class is an easy A. If you want to learn or improve your skill set it's not for you. Bad feedback and lack of direction given.
Very interesting and fun lecture! I would take this class again. Easy A if you take time to do the assignments.
He's really great- a great professor and human being. I was never bored in lecture, even when learning about different properties of lights. Super helpful if you have any questions- asked him a computer question not pertaining to the class and he helped me in a way my other professor was unable to. Great guy.
Take him. The reason I did not get an A is because the TA is really harsh. You will always learn something from Hoyt's lecture and he occasionally lets us watch a few videos here and there as well. Overall, fun lecture but you do have to put in a lot of effort onto loads of projects that can be graded very harshly as I said above.
Eric Hoyt is a good professor but it was pretty distracting how much he tried shoving his politics down your throat. Almost all the student work he shared and applauded in class related to his liberal politics. Other students noticed it too. Other then that he is passionate and inspiring and caring and the work you do is applicable.
Best professor I have had ever. Genuinely cares about engaging students, enabling and inspiring a them to do their best work. You will look forward to going to lectures not only because of the content but because of Hoyt's stage presence and humor. Many students choose to go into the CA major because of him teaching 155. Take his classes.
This is the best professor I've had at UW-Madison. I was constantly laughing in lecture and felt like I got a lot out of the class. He truly cares about his students and it shows. 10/10 take this class with Hoyt.
This man. He makes me want to pack up and move to Hollywood to make movies. Lecture was interesting, funny, motivating and most importantly, it was inspiring. Eric cares about his students' success and he's happy to help you get there. If you have a brain, take a class with Eric Hoyt. The single best professor I've had on this campus hands down.
By far my favorite professor. I'm obsessed.
What can I say? This was the best class I've ever taken in UW-Madison. Hoyt is great in a way that he constantly shows his love for the students. (TA are very nice also). I can tell how he not only admires digital media production but also teaching in general. He's super laid back and fun too. I mean who dances Gingham style during the lecture?
Eric is incredible, and more invested in celebrating student's work than almost any professor I've met. He gives you a safe space to be goofy, experiment, and learn. You couldn't pick a better class to test the waters of the Adobe suite, photography, etc. A solid foundation in digital media. Hoyt Awards Ceremony Oscars Awards Ceremony
Amazing professor. I am taking CA 468 right now only because he's teaching it. With 450, there's a lot of reading but you learn so much from his lectures. Even though I had to put a lot of effort into it, this was one of my favorite classes.
Hoyt is really really great. Super accomplished in his field, I literally looked forward to lecture and I felt like I learned so much but didn't have to kill myself for an A. He puts in the effort to learn your name and remembers it even after the course is over. If you have the opportunity to take this class, it will be worth it!
Professor Hoyt's class is really great. It cemented my desire to go into the world of media. However, I've heard that people's view of this class is dependent on who your TA is. I had Jenny, who was amazing. Projects were interesting and useful, and I left this class with a working knowledge of lots of different software. Overall great.
He's a really fun professor, but the lectures can be a bit long. He frequently shows videos and movies during class which makes it more enjoyable. The class is primarily graded on the media projects you'll make (Digital photography, Photoshop TV posters, Web design with HTML and CSS, Podcasts, and video production). Overall a fun class.
This man is such an awesome professor. The only thing that's kind of annoying is that he takes attendance at lectures, but I don't really understand why people would want to skip them. He's a funny man, he's really interested in what his students produce in lab, and he obviously cares about the subject. Definitely a hella fantastic class to take!
Eric is a fantastic professor. He really cares and makes class super enjoyable.
Eric is by far my favorite professor in the Comm Arts department. He knows his stuff and cares about his students. He's really funny too which helps lectures. A lot of the work is group work, but the projects are fun. Take one of Eric's classes if you get the chance. (He also recreates the Oscars at the end of 155 which is well worth it. #Hoytys)
Really good professor. Really cares about his students & is passionate about what he teaches.
Professor Hoyt is awesome! Would highly recommend this class to anyone who is even the slightest bit interested - by the end of the semester I had declared a communications major because he got me SO interested in the subject. He truly cares about every student and makes an effort to know everyone's name, which is awesome in such a big class.
Eric Hoyt is one of a kind. He's hilarious, provokes deep-thinking, and inspiring. He tries really hard to get to know as many of his students as he possible can. He recognizes work after projects and makes us feel like we really did do a great job and our hard work is appreciated. He inspires his students to create media they believe in.
Eric Hoyt is THE MAN
Great intro class and hilarious guy. Everyone loved him and the class content was fun and easy
I really enjoyed CA 155 and Hoyt! He's super funny and makes the lectures interesting. The projects you do are really cool and interesting as well. My only complaint is that the projects are very fast paced, but my TA wasn't too harsh when it came to grading. Lots of group work, and you'll have to put time out of class for some of the projects
Professor Hoyt has been one of my favorite professors. His lectures are interesting and he is just a great person. He is extremely qualified for his position and obviously knows his stuff. Loved this class - would definitely recommend it!
Professor Hoyt is easily my favorite professor. He makes lectures are interesting and engaging; I looked forward to going to class. Only exams are the midterm and final, and both are super easy if you attend class. There are 5 total projects, 3 of which are with a group. Highly recommended, you won't regret it.
Was recommended this class by a friend and was not disappointed. Eric Hoyt gives great lectures and I enjoyed going to class. Grade is based on attendance and mostly group projects. I feel like the projects should be given a rubric on how to be graded or something, but it wasn't too harsh. Tests were cake. Highly recommend this class.
Hoyt is an awesome, funny, and engaging prof. Fun and easy class! Exams are super easy, 10 mc and 2 essays max. Gives you study guide. Read the books, they are interesting and help. Get ready to work on group projects, they are fun but take extra time out of class! Easy and enjoyable intro class!
I always wanted to attend lectures because he made them so enjoyable. He has a very interactive lecture. One time I didn't get a chance to speak in class and he found me after lecture so he could listen to what I had to say. The class material isn't too bad, just a few group projects. Really applicable knowledge too.
Really interesting and awesome professor. You will learn photography, graphic arts, podcasts, and film. He really knows his stuff and has no problem articulating it. He makes an honest effort to learn everyone's name and display student projects. Projects are time consuming but well worth it, tests are all short-answer/essay format and not too hard
Easy class until a project starts; at that point you have to put a lot of time into it until it's done. really easy tests!
First time this class was taught, but he's a very engaging professor and keeps lectures interesting and engaging. You can tell he really enjoys teaching this class!
Best Professor I've ever had!
Extremely energetic and comedic professor. Easy to listen to. Lectures are VERY enjoyable. I went to every lecture not because I had to, although that's part of the class' participation, but because I genuinely wanted to. One of the best professors you'll have. Easy class, very applicable skills learned and its an easy A for 4 credits. TAKE THIS!!
He is really passionate about the material. He has been my favorite professor thus far. He danced during class one time. He also shows lots of really interesting clips from movies or things to help get the point across. He gets to know his students.
