Makes you pretend like your a member of Congress but its really fun because you can write your own legislation and debate it. Love you Ellie!
Professor Powell is an engaging lecturer and always connects the material to current events and interesting concepts. The class's simulation projects were really fun and informative, and this course helped me understand Congress on a deeper level. I'd recommend this class to anyone considering getting into poli sci.
I really enjoyed this class and Dr. Powell. Her research seems cool and she definitely cares about students learning rather than earning specific grades. She did a simulation activity where you're assigned one democrat and one republican house member to represent for the semester. One midterm that was a few questions and an essay.
Prof Powell overall did quite well on teaching this subject! This class involves coding in R which was pretty straightforward if you pay attention in class. Going to discussion matters a lot as this is where you'll get your group projects that last throughout the semester. Boring lectures in my opinion, but pretty easy A in this class!
Overall, Professor Powell herself is amazing, and super caring and accessible. The only thing about this class is how absolutely awful it is. Coding in R is one of the worst things ever as somebody who sucks at code. If you hate coding, do not take this class. Honestly little of the actual course work has to do with survey research, just R studio
Professor Powell is really nice and wants you to succeed. She understands most people don't know how to code and breaks it down well. I never went to lecture because they didn't have much to do with the class. Class is project heavy but there are no tests.
This class felt unnecessary as a Poli Sci major; coding in R was difficult and explained primarily by the TA. Lecture material was dry and largely unnecessary for assignments. Graded off of a few problem sets, a large final project, and few other things. Having a good TA is crucial for this class, as Professor interaction is minimal.
Professor Powell did a good job of explaining tough material, and you can tell that she's really invested in what she teaches. The group/individual project is also very engaging and pretty fun overall. Besides that, there's not many other grades, but what is graded gives you a lot of feedback and help with the course.
Useful, interesting course with a very good professor. Accessible outside of class, very knowledgable across topics in political science, and obviously cares about students.
The class is overall very easy. Attendance is not mandatory. There are no exams just a semester-long group project which is pretty fun and engaging. However, the course description says that you will learn how to program in R. Actually, there will be only 2 days dedicated to R. At the end, I didn't learn anything in this class, but its easy A
Shes a great lecturer! I would definitely recommend the US Congress class. There are some tough readings but its worth it.
If you want to take a class where you don't learn anything and work your butt off to receive an AB while everyone around you doesn't even show up to class half the time and ends up earning an A, this is the class for you. If you're smart, don't take this class. If you're an idiot, you'll get an A for doing no work at all.
