I would love to garden with Eve, or meet her cats, and I really liked going to office hours/doing my honors project with her. Great lady. Loves plants so much. Not great with tech, but a subject expert! You will teach yourself and be amused by her. She's very sweet and means well. Will say "are there any anthropologists in class today?" every day.

she cool, she like a da plant.

So hard to listen to a monotone lecture 3 times a week, but she knows what she's talking about. She's bad w/tech and you can't see your grade until it's on your transcript. The tests were doable with a solid study guide. All memorization, no application. Honestly not the worst option for a science credit. Nice that there's no discussion.

She is a nice woman and is quite knowledgable and passionate about plants. However, she does not offer a study guide, and the tests are a gamble. Additionally, she doesn't grade anything until the last few days. Though she does offer a good amount of extra credit.

Pretty much no one pays attention during lecture because they do not engage you whatsoever. It is a boring explanation, she reads straight from the slides. Seems to be a lovely plant enthusiast but is definitely the worst professor I have had at UW in terms of ability to teach. Would not recommend , I wish I learned more.

Definitely very knowledgeable and passionate about the lecture topics, however, does tend to go off on tangents. Information covered on tests is discussed ahead of time and clearly laid out, which is helpful since they are very term-heavy. Many extra credit opportunities, but most arent necessary if you consistently attend class.

Super interesting class! Although Eve can sometimes go off topic during lecture she was still easy to follow. Make sure to read the chapters and take thorough notes because some concepts from the book that aren't brought up in lecture appear on the exams. Tons of extra credit options too!!

TERRIBLE CLASS. the grades don't come in till a day before the final and she stops the option of looking at what if in canvas, so you have no clue what ur grade looks like. the grading is never released so if you do a weekly assignment you won't even know you were doing it wrong the whole class. this class is unreal and messed up.

Nice lady, but a clueless teacher. Lectures were directionless and confusing despite simple concepts; better off skipping class and using the time to read one of the copious, grueling research articles/book chapters that the exams are based on. Also most grades were released during the last week of the semester (after our final).

Avoid this class at all costs, especially if youre only taking 474 to fulfill the ethnic studies requirement. Dr. Emshwiller seems to be knowledgeable about the subject matter, but the class is remarkably disorganized and hard to follow. Lectures are all over the place in terms of content. Most of your grade is based on a single paper. Avoid!

While she is very nice and respectful, professor emshwiller is extremely disorganized. The lectures are all over the place and the class has little structure, things are graded super late, and the amount of readings assigned are ridiculous. The worst part is, half of the exams are about the readings and ask very specific questions about them.

Prof Emshwiller is really passionate about her subject and does care, but her lectures and class are so disorganized! I barely know what is happening half the time, not because the content is hard, but because everything is all over the place. She gets off topic on her lectures all the time. The material is interesting however, but you need READ.

The professor is kind, approachable and knowledgable. However, those traits somehow DO NOT translate into her teaching abilities. Lectures are disorganized, hard to follow, off topic. Spent more time and effort on this class than my 5 cr Bio. Expect tons of readings, writing assignments, extremely specific content exams, & one very long term paper.

Very passionate about her Botany but this seems to cause this class to take a back seat. Despite having taught the class before it somehow feels unorganized. The things that she teaches are interesting though and it did make me feel more interested in Botany overall. Just be ready to read the textbook and don't expect hw to be handed back bf finals

Expects you to read the textbook and memorize its contents despite her not touching on half of it in lecture and instead lecturing on Plant families which is quite unrelated to the course description. Assigns more then one chapter a week for reading, and does not write tests until the day before/of so they can be highly variable.

Eve has interesting information to share, and I enjoyed all the class material. However, the class is so oddly structured with too much work that's graded worth more than an entire exam?! The exams were my least concern in this class, as at times I was struggling to keep up with the writings and readings. Not an easy A, but not a difficult class.

She was ill-prepared for lecturing. Within the first couple weeks of class, she fell behind schedule because she would not pick and choose what information was actually important. She takes a long time to give back grades because she gives way too many assignments for her one TA to assess. The one good thing was that the topic was interesting.

Her lectures were dry and her tests tend to be very detail oriented. HOWEVER, there is an insane amount of easy extra credit (equivalent to an entire midterm) like trying new food & writing about it. We made lotion & did other fun activities in lecture which was nice. This won't be an easy A but it was interesting & I'd recommend it

Her lectures are vague/unorganized, and her tests are extremely difficult/detail-oriented. She wastes time having us do things like make lotion and smell different spices, then barely goes over content. Also is horrible at grading/getting things out on time. Thought this would be an easy A-it's definitely not. Get out while you can.

SHE SOMEHOW CANNOT SEE PEOPLE RAISING THEIR HANDS

Eve is not fit to be a teacher. It is mind blowing how under prepared she would be for class. I honestly think an 8th grade could give more interesting lectures, which is a shame considering how cool the topic promised to be. The class was super easy, but you won't get anything out of it. The only redemption was some cool articles.

Class was OK. Typical powerpoint and memorization required. She got behind a lot on posting the slides, giving assignments, and grading. A few (easy) projects, one was a group project. Three exams. Never did the readings from the textbook, don't buy it. Attendance sign in. Ended up playing on my phone during lectures, as did everyone else.

Lectures are extremely unorganized and long. Content in lecture does not match content on the midterms. Overall a very unorganized class

Took this course with Brian and Eve in the Spring. the 8:50 lectures are horrible and do not really aid in learning. Brian's lectures were bettersorta helpful. All the content for the test was on posted slides. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSION THE NIGHT BEFORE THE EXAM! They basically tell you what to know. A lot of course time, but not a ton of work.

Lectures are really confusing as she jumps around a lot in the content. The material didn't get interesting until there were only two weeks left in the class and the tests are hard. They also switch professors half way through the class which can be good or bad.

This class was a convoluted mess of random facts and plants. Her monotonous 8:50am rambling is enough to make you drink yourself into a coma the night before any lecture. Also has no clue how to design an exam, she needs to sit down and learn how to write a sentence/question. Furthermore, what she calls a grading scale is a joke. Avoid this woman.

Dr. Emshwiller was one of two professors for Botany 130. She's not too bad of a lecturer (definitely better than the other one we had). She's pretty enthusiastic about the origin of plants, and she talks a bit about how she got to be a professor. Just make sure you attend lecture because her slides are pretty useless!

I would agree with everything previously mentioned. I don't know why she doesn't post powerpoints until after we do them, and I found myself leaving big holes in my notes because she goes through them too fast in class. Tests are hard to prepare for because the information is presented in a disorganized fashion.

Very nice and obviously smart. BUT - lectures are extremely boring, and somewhat hard to follow as she speaks in a monotous tone, with odd gaps in her sentences. Seems to jump around and I definitely pick up on anxiety. Wish powerpoints were available BEFORE class to write notes on. Dig the pre-class music!

Started out a little shaky but got more organized as the class went along. Goes a little too quickly through her powerpoints sometimes, but she posts them online. Really nice lady, very open to students.

eh she was OK. Lectures were very boring and I hated that she didn't give out powerpoints. It was impossible to take notes and be able to pay attention. Tests were not that bad though and she was willing to help. She is also very knowledgeable in the topic which can be a plus or minus.

She was clearly new at lecturing in a undergrad classroom setting. The lectures left something to be desired - they were somewhat disorganized and very boring at times. She burned through the Powerpoint slides and was not willing to provide them for printout before the lecture. I relied heavily on the book to get a good grade.

This was her first semester teaching, and you could tell. She seemed nervous and her powerpoints were pretty scrambled and unclear, plus she didn't really give us a good idea of what was going to be on the tests. I didn't like her lecturing, but her tests were really easy, fair and straightforward.
