OT's course was frustrating because the content was poorly organized and lectures were disjointed. Her accent made it hard to understand lecture, when she showed up. The required reading was her own book, which was interesting. I dreaded this class. I got a B because there didn't feel like enough material to study and the tests didn't reflect class

Great class. OT is extremely knowledgeable and has a deep understanding of the subject. While some seem frustrated with the Japan heavy material, the culture is simply a device she uses in to exhibit different aspects of the subject. She is friendly and encourages students to come to office hours. Exams are based on the notes and readings.

I actually enjoyed the subject material but the class was organized very poorly and it was hard to know what would be on the exams. To add insult to injury, an entire section had to have an exam postponed due to the wrong exam sheets being printed. Poorly organized. Not difficult, but probably in your best interest to avoid.

She is definitely not helpful. She makes the class as boring as possible. You would think anthropology is an interesting class but she definitely goes out of her way to prove that wrong. Do not take this class with her unless you want to get a D in an easy A class!!!

Worst professor ever. Not a hard class but a complete waste of time. OT is senile and has no idea what's going on. You are supposed to learn about other cultures but all you learn about is JAPAN'S culture. She talks about something for 50min that could be said in 5 yet her published essays you read are extremely advanced and hard to understand.

The course is completely disorganized. The TAs have poor communication with O-T and O-T hardly ever presents us with information to learn. On the first midterm there were maybe 10 vocab words. We spent all our discussions talking about the same three terms, and lectures are always movies or guest lecturers. Such a waste, we coulda learned so much!

Still does not know how to work the microphone. Wastes a lot of class time just getting the films to work properly or fast forwarding through them. Enjoyed the topics otherwise.

She never came to class prepared and didn't bother to show up to the first three lectures. She didn't even know which end of the microphone to speak into. She also spent 10 minutes trying to turn on subtitles for a German movie that had none. She clearly didn't test to see if the videos worked properly before showing them.

Easy A. Very poor teaching style though.

just... bad. comically bad.

the content is selective memory, and she's trying to beautifying the Japanese imperialism, not objective at all

Not a fan of OT. I wasn't really sure what we needed to know for exams. That being said, they were manageable. Her ramblings are terrible. Readings are excruciating. Good field researcher, awful undergrad professor.

Take this class if you need to satisfy your ethnic studies requirement. It's extremely boring and discussions are required, but it really isn't that hard. If you go to lecture, read the books, and participate in discussion, you'll get an A. I skipped a lot of lectures and didn't read any of the books and got a B. The exams are almost common sense.

I am pretty sure that Emiko was unaware that she is a professor. For that matter, I think she was unaware that she lives in the state of Wisconsin. Easily one of the worst professors ive ever had. Now im not saying she isnt smart, because that would be a false statement, but at the sobering age of at least 75, her mentality was not fully there.

Horrible professor. She didn't know how to work the microphone nor did she know how to properly present material. It was required to buy the longest and most boring book she's ever written and test questions about it were very specific while readings were long and uninteresting. AVOID EMIKO!

she was frequently late to class and did not know how to work her microphone... a very important skill in a class of 400. She also did not budget enough time for movies ie. she scheduled 1 50 minute lecture for a 114 minute movie. The tests were really difficult to predict but you're usually alright if you do the assigned readings.
