If you can't deal with that, his classes may be miserable for you. If that doesn't bother you, he will be one of the most knowledgeable, enthusiastic men you'll ever learn from. His expertise and passion for teach about IR and China are infectious. The essays are handwritten and graded tough but fair. He's probably the most knowledgeable professor I've had the pleasure of being taught by at UW. His lecture style was old-fashioned (no laptops, no powerpoint slides), but it really makes you reminisce about having to actively listen to professors. Friedman is a genius, and had some good stories to tell too!","source_url":"https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/professor/362490","quality_rating":5,"difficulty_rating":3},{"observed_at":"2026-09-07 16:41:59.990945+00:00","run_id":"20260907T155543-ce3781c4","source_review_id":"UmF0aW5nLTI3MzY4OTAy","source_instructor_id":"rmp:362490","instructor_name":"Edward Friedman","course_label":"POL346","course_id":null,"course_uid":null,"review_date":"2016-12-07 13:37:34 +0000 UTC","comment":"Professor Friedman is old school. He doesn't use powerpoint just an a projector that has a paper with keywords on it. He can be funny and very personable but he goes on tangents a lot and his lectures can be hard to follow. He's a forgiving grader if you do worse on the first exam then the others he'll drop it.
