Super interesting class that was ruined by harshly graded papers and a final exam. Along with the grading, the TAs and Dietram provides no help for the final exam and ignored every student question posted on Piazza for the three weeks leading up to it. Wouldn't really recommend this if you're looking for an easy A.
Dietram is a great person and passionate lecturer who's very understanding of circumstances. That being said, he problematically doesn't have rubrics for writing assignments, which make up most of your grade. TAs give very unclear feedback. Pay attention in class, ask questions, and you'll do well.
LSC 251 was an inconceivably frustrating class. The grading for the final and writing assignments (70% of grade) were nonsensical, and you will think that you aced something, then get an 80. I took this as an easy A elective, and it almost ruined my 4.0 as a junior. Lectures WERE interesting, but it was wildly unclear what you would be tested on.
He is a great professor that cares about students, takes lots of time to review and happily explains any topic. Does not provide a clear grading rubric for papers, many pop quizzes (usually one per week), participation does not count for grade but needed for papers and final. Overall, easy-ish A class.
he's pretty chill
For an introductory class, don't expect this course to be easy. Dietram is a great professor and his lectures are super interesting, but you definitely have to work for your grade, even if you're a good writer. Rubrics aren't provided for essays, and some of the TAs' feedback is vague, but that could have been because of the specific TAs I had.
I really want to give Dietram a good score, he is very clearly passionate about what he teaches and cares about his students. Unfortunately the way he actually runs the class ruins it. Slides are very basic so if you miss lecture you're screwed, and essays that are a major part of your grade are graded very harsh with no feedback or rubric.
I am conflicted with my review of Dietram. I LOVED the class and the content, but am overall frustrated with the structure of the class. We recieved no feedback on writing assignments, and meeting with TAs (like they always say) also wasnt helpful. Most of the class seems to be struggling, and there is no help from the prof or TAs. Be cautious.
genuinely a really interesting lecturer and person, he gives a lot of examples and tries to make the lecture discussion-based even tho its a big class. There are random participation quizzes so def go to lecture and I would highly recommend meeting with this prof outside of class he rly wants to help his students and helped me get an internship!
DO NOT TAKE!!! The class isnt curved even though the average on the assignments is super low. TAs are SUPER hard graders despite meeting with them & putting lots of work into assignments. Feedback often vague and points taken off for silly things. He puts little information on slides making it very hard to go back and study if you missed something.
Changed class to not be curved anymore without changing a single thing about the class structure, making grade averages VERY low (think 60-70% on assignments worth 30% of your grade). Egotistical to say the least. To do the assignments you have to go back into lecture slides but he does not provide any information on the slide beyond a title.
Dietram doesn't provide rubrics, which isn't an issue if the assignment objectives are clear. TAs will take 30% off your score and leave vague feedback. The prompts are very open-ended and essays are graded very harshly. Also, this is the first year he isn't curving it, despite not making any changes to the course design. Do not take this class.
I enjoyed the content of LSC 251, but Dietram's grading criteria is hidden from the student perspective. I had confidence in my writing ability until this class, but his statement "life doesn't give rubrics" excusing his lack of feedback is frustrating and unhelpful. I would like to improve, but I don't know what I'm being deducted points for.
super kind, wants to help students, especially with recommendations and obtaining internships. Makes material super relatable and easy to grasp.
Was honestly one of the best Professors I've had at UW. His lectures are easy to follow, he is extremely knowledgeable in the field of sci-comm, and it's extremely evident that he cares if you take the time to speak with him outside of class. The structure of the class/grading can be frustrating at times, but he's great at answering questions.
Dietram was a great professor and kept lectures engaging. Attendance is required for the class since he does random participation/attendance quizzes based on course content. The class is made up of 3 papers, 4 discussion posts, and a final. A pretty easy class if you are looking for a Humanities class and are interested in science.
He was very interesting to listen to and made class interesting. If you're ok with writing a few papers over the course of the semester and doing short readings weekly, I'd definitely recommend him and this class. The content he teaching is very engaging and relevant. Plus, he enjoys joking and making class fun.
A great but fast-talking lecturer. The class itself isn't that hard if you take good notes and pay attention in lecture. A couple papers are peer-graded, which I found a little irritating, but I enjoyed the class. Interesting topics and light workload. I would take another class with Dietram!
Scheufele is awesome. He is so funny and makes lectures really interesting. The workload is very light, you are graded on 4 online discussion posts and 3 short papers, 2 of which are peer graded. I took this class to get humanities credit and it was actually really interesting. It has some psych in it too.
The lecture slides he posts are just an abridged version of what he says and the content you learn in the class is very much based on terms and definitions. It would be nice to get clear definitions of the concepts learned. The grading policy he implements is also very confusing and you never know what your grade is until the final is taken
Dietram is amazing! I'm a junior and he's one of the best professors I've had. The course content is really interesting and relevant. Go to class or you won't be able to do the assignments well. Before the final he gives a list of 50 possible questions and then will pick about 5 for us to answer on the exam (essay questions). Very fair grading.
Discussion posts are unhelpful. Peer reviewed essays are unhelpful. Final exam is just dumb. This class wants to "open your perspective" by using your peers to open it. Um, we're all university students and pretty much share all the same opinions. Thanks for trying lol. This class has quite possibly the worst structure I've ever had to deal with.
Scheufele was awesome. LSC 251 was kind of a weird class because we just covered whatever he thought was important but the lectures were interesting and really relevant to what was going on in the world. He's a bit dry but a funny dude and really helpful/ understanding to all students. lectures are optional but necessary for the final.
Dietram is very nice and super knowledgeable. Half the studies you cover are ones he's conducted lol. You definitely need to go to lectures, a lot of what's covered is in his explanations which aren't on the slides. Final is 40% of your grade which is a bit much, but not a super difficult final either. If you pay attention you'll be fine.
I loved Prof. Scheufele! I am not a LSC major and found this class to be very interesting. It is similar to psychology and how humans + environment work, so if you do not find that interesting, you will be bored in lecture. Two of the papers were graded by peers which doesn't seem as bad as it sounds. Would definitely recommend!
A lot of the information covered in class is common sense, but the lectures remain interesting and the work load is pretty light. Expect a few writing assignments along with weekly discussion posts. He is very knowledgeable and easy to engage with. My only issue is that I wish the grading was more transparent.
Dietram was absolutely fantastic! Lectures were easy to follow and there was a lot of great discussion while we were still in person. I'm an engineering student so I was happy to find a humanities class that didn't require insane amounts of reading or writing. The class is super interesting and Dietram has a great dry sense of humor.
Took it my last semester on a whim and the class and professor ended up being one of my favorites in my academic career. If you can I recommend taking this class IN PERSON as the in-class discussions are eliminated when on-line, and I found it to be one of the best parts of the class. Homework is light readings, 4 discussions, and 3 papers
I took this class just to fulfill my humanities requirement since I'm not an LSC major and this was my favorite humanities class I've taken. Dietram definitely knows what he is talking about and the class structure is very clear. There are no midterms or in person discussion sections, just three papers and four discussion boards. Easy A!
Best class and professor that I've had at UW. He's extremely intelligent yet down to earth and truly cares about his students. The topics are super interesting and relevant. Professor Scheufele illustrates the complexity of science communication and emerging technologies; after this class, you'll become more thoughtful and aware in society.
Stimulating lectures that you won't want to miss. Super intelligent, interesting guy who does a lot outside of the classroom. Meet with him outside of class to talk, it's worth your time!!
I took an online class with Prof. Scheufele, but this was far and away the worst class I've taken at UW in my 3 years. Absolutely robbed of $3,500. He doesn't grade himself and has other students who are just learning the material grade each other and quiz questions are poor measure of understanding concepts. Doesn't seem to care about this class.
I'm not an LSC or an STS major (Industrial Engineering), so I only took this as an elective, but it was my favorite class that I have ever taken. Truly interesting lectures on modern ideas and concepts. Scheufele really connects with his students and makes lectures really engaging. Encourages large class discussion on deep topics. Excellent class.
Very interesting lectures. He's very nice and knows what he's talking about.
Favorite class of the semester. Super insightful, down to earth, and relevant. We are lucky to have a Prof. like him on campus!
Dietram is a great guy. You can tell he loves what he teaches and he is just one of those people you love to listen too. Very clear, very thought provoking.. and it's pretty straight forward to get an A in this class. No quizzes, one midterm, a final and 5 short essay responses (like 200 words) for homework. Would highly recommend!
Hard course, but great prof
Boring class. Boring prof.
This guy is the worst. Dull lectures and quiz after quiz. Worst prof I have had.
he really knows his stuff. And he is funny
Good class with a real client
This is one of the few class at UW where I actually learned something useful. Great prof.
Not a good class. Professor is OK. Not too helpful though.
boring, boring, boring
No real final project, so if you want an easy class this is it. If you want to learn something, this is not the guy. Pretentious and annoying, and not very knowledgeable about marketing. Plus, coudl the guy be more full of himself. Not nearly as good looking as he thinks he is.
This was a great class, definitely the best one I've taken in the J-School s far.
I really enjoyed this class. lecture was very entertaining and the class has a real client, even though they were sometimes annoying.
Great class on research and consulting. Not sure if the people who wrote the previous two comments even went to class.
The worst. Why did the UW hire this guy? Doesn't have any professional experience. He just says "branding" all the time and thinks that makes him a marketing professor. Not.
Not a good class, especially with this guy. Doesn't seem to know anything about marketing or advertising. Boring.
Did not like his overbearing style. This guy is very high on himself. Dismissive of students who disagree with him.
Good content, but the professor blew. Does not seem to care about students. Picks a few favorites. Just reads the powerpoints. The readings were pretty good.
My best class last semester
Awesome class, great prof. Not sure what the ratings for J417 and J829 are all about--he doesn't even teach these classes.

Very straightforward tests. No surprises. Best professor I've had so far.
best class i've taken at uw
Very open-minded. Has strong opinions, but wants everyone else to express theirs. Great class.
He comes off as a jackass..he knows he's attractive, and is very dismissive to others. It might be an elusive "German man" thing, but its pretty rude-he shouldn't be in communication.
great prof
Class is never boring, and he really knows his stuff.
Arrogant and annoying know-it-all. Lose the smug attitude and the class might be more interesting. And what is with the three-piece suit all the time? Funny.
