Dr. Gooding is the best professor I have ever had. She extremely smart and teaches the course in a great way. I find that people just complain about her because they are soft. exams are pretty hard but you will do fine.
Dr. Gooding is so knowledged in all areas of psychopathology. I enjoyed her teaching styles, but sometimes she only notes things in lectures and puts them on the test with little context. It is important to do the readings and complete the online assessments, otherwise your grade will be tanked. Attend lecture and take detailed notes.
Pros: She is knowledgeable about the field and has a lot of experience. Cons: She is not a good lecturer and goes on tangents often. She also is not an understanding person when you need accommodations or have other life situations come up. Things on quizzes often were not covered in lecture. Was not an enjoyable experience with her at all.
Unfortunately I did not have a good experience in this course with Dr.Gooding. She is an extremely tough grader and does not give any feedback after exams. She is also very inaccessible with her office hours being only 1 hour a week on Sunday night.
Very very difficult exams, HOSTILE AND CONDESCENDING. Very rude and condescending as well as narcissistic. Exams are very hard and no extra credit.
Professor Gooding says she loves teaching, and she was interested in the course material, but I thought she could improve by staying more on the topic during her lectures
Her lectures were often disorganized, and she spent more time telling personal stories as examples than teaching the content. When she does teach the content, she goes too fast to get notes down. You HAVE to do well on the exams as they make up over 60% of your grade, and there are no other assignments except homework. (The exams are tough)
Very poor professor. Not accommodating at all and would not own up to her own mistakes. Often blamed her TA for things that were done incorrectly.
I read all the other ratings and thought, how bad can it be? I was wrong. Listen to the ratings and don't take this class if she is teaching it.
I didn't enjoy my time in Gooding's lecture. The content was nothing spectacular that I wasn't already taught in other beginner psych classes and didn't really match the content we were expected to know for exams. She often rambled with personal stories during class instead of actually teaching. She was also often very rude to students
Gooding presents the lecture material fast and you have to rewatch the entire recorded lecture to get the notes. Lectures are rushed at the end because she spends most of the lecture telling her own stories that are often not beneficial. Exams are harshly graded and there's no room for compromise plus they're not given back to review.
Took this class with Dr. Gooding a couple of years back -- I did not have a good experience. The extra credit assignment was some sort of review of Dr. Gooding's own work, and I recall putting a respectable effort into it. Despite satisfying the assignment's prompt, I was graded harshly (C), with zero feedback. There was no rubric.
I thought the exams were really hard to prepare for because there was so much material. Otherwise, a very interesting class. Dr. Gooding is very passionate about this field of study.
Don't understand all the negative ratings. Gooding is extremely knowledgeable and passionate, both about her research and her teaching. Lots of content covered, but all fascinating (and mostly review if you're a psych student). She gives a great snapshot of the field of psychopathology, and it was a pleasure hearing her expertise on schizophrenia.
The professor is knowledgeable but lectures can be long-winded, focusing more on personal stories than teaching the material. Exams are challenging, requiring extensive preparation. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for studying concepts.
Not a good lecturer and a very hard grader. She also is mean and arrogant towards students, often making fun of them in front the class.
Smart lady
She is very rude and says things to students that are demeaning/offensive/etc. She isn't good at teaching. However, because she goes off on crazy tangents, the topics related to her absurd tangents are memorable. She doesn't care about her students, and she grades harshly without room to argue your perspective or even see your exam afterward.
I found that this class was way overhyped for being tuff. I am in engineering and I had other classes to study for so I pushed this class to the side, until literally the day before the test to study, but I still managed to get an AB. I think she is very knowledgeable and caring, however I see how people complain about how she goes off on tangents.
Very nice and knowledgeable, but TERRIBLE educator. This was by FAR the hardest A I have ever heard; listen to ALL the negative reviews. 95% is an A, but I've never had a class curved so horribly. I studied for two weeks before each exam and that was barely enough for an A. Only graded by 3 exams which are EXTREMELY difficult. DO NOT TAKE with her.
There's 3 exams with no other assignments besides a 5 point quiz to cushion your grade and the exams are pretty difficult, so she makes it almost impossible to get an A. She spends more time telling stories about herself than she does actually teaching. My advice: start studying for exams at least a week in advance and rewrite lecture notes.
I was disappointed by Gooding's class. The material was interesting and she's clearly knowledgable, but lectures are more about telling stories about herself than teaching. Exams were *very* difficult; I spent hours reviewing for each one and barely kept a B total. I would not recommend her to anyone who wants to enjoy their experience in abnorm.
Listen to the negative reviews. A is a 95% and only 13% get this. There is a lot of information and she expects you to know it all. The first day of class she stated "I can do what I want, I'm tenured". She rambles and tells irrelevant stories that do not help you understand concepts. Exams are difficult and there are no challenges to questions.
There are only three exams in this course with no homework but lectures are manditory to go to since there is no other learning material besides her lectures. Her exams are relatively difficult and here is a TONN of material to memorize so make sure to study at least a week in advanced and really make sure you know the ins and outs of everything.
Though she is wise and knowledgeable about psychology, she provides little to no effort/care to efficiently teach her students. She spends more time speaking about herself than actively teaching the material needed to get a good grade. If you want a teacher who values and respects their students and their feedback, do not choose Gooding.
I absolutely LOVED professor gooding!!! there is some assigned reading but all you really need to do is pay attention in lecture and takes notes. she will stress things and make it known that they are on the exam and i got great grades just by reviewing notes and studying terms i was unfamiliar with. Would love to study under her!!
Professor Gooding is extremely knowledgable and passionate about her field, and her lectures are really engaging if you're interested in psychopathology. However, your entire grade is made up of only three exams which can be difficult considering the harsh curve. Overall, though, I would recommend her if you're willing to put in the work.
Professor Gooding obviously cares about her students outside of class, which is appreciated. However. She makes earning an A in this class very difficult. You are graded on 3 exams only and a 95% or higher is an A. Her exams pull random information that was not discussed, and are overly difficult. Goes off topic in lectures then rushes through.
A nice person outside of class, but definitely a poor professor. She spent most of the time talking about her personal stories that do not help us understand the concepts better. The exams are challenging because she tests us on detailed information. She just simply read off every single word on her slides.
she spends over half the class times talking about her random stories and then rushes through the lecture. her exam questions are stupidly challenging for no reason. she's not a bad person but i dont understand where her thinking is with the exam questions.
Professor Gooding seems like a great person outside of academics but was one of the worst professors I have ever had. She often read directly from her slides and would repeat herself multiple times in a row. Her pacing was slow and she did not seem to rehearse her lectures. Additionally, you could hear her flip through note cards in her recordings.
This class was so frustrating. Professor Gooding exclusively reads directly off the slides and when she doesn't she is telling long winded anecdotes that only lead to you getting distracted and lost in the lecture content. You are only graded on three exams yet the grading baseline for an A is a 95%, making it nearly impossible to get an A.
Contrary to reviews, I LOVED Professor Gooding's lectures in Psych 405. If you are interested in abnormal psychology take it!!! She does talk a lot about personal experiences but it helped me remember the material more. Grading sucks because 95%+ is an A and exams are pretty specific but if you do you read and attend lectures you'll be fine.
Professor gooding's lecture is very very (I couldn't stress this enough) unclear, so you need to do A LOT of reading/review yourself. Material in textbook is a fair game so you need to read. However, outside of class, she is very nice to student and very accessible, so take that to your advantage. It's definitely tough, but you will do fine.
You can tell Professor Gooding cares about her students. She is clearly knowledgeable on abnormal psychology, and makes sure everyone knows it. However, in a lot of her lectures she tends to ramble and go off topic. Only graded on 3 exams. I found them to be very fair. She isn't for everyone but if you know what you're getting into, you'll do okay.
I really enjoyed her class! She's really knowledgeable about her subject, and was available during office hours. Her lectures did tend to ramble, but everything you need to know for exams is in the lecture. Really cares about her students. Graded on three exams which is scary but the exams are fair. Don't be scared away by the bad reviews!!
Dr. Gooding truly has a gift for teaching. I am lucky to have had her as a professor. Her passion felt extremely relatable and her stories are actually very fun to listen to. I loved her lectures because it felt like I was listening to my future self. The course isn't too challenging and exams are fair evaluations. My favorite professor at UW!
She does not know how to teach. I don't know how she has been teaching for this long. You're sitting in class and the whole time you're thinking, what am I supposed to be taking away from this? Nothing. I learned nothing in this class and somehow I'm still not going to get an A. That's because her exams are equally as vague as her lectures.
Frustrating on how her lectures and the textbook that we are required to read covers different material and occasionally contradicts each other, yet we are supposed to know both in order to pass the exam. I've only taken the first exam so far and did good, but you will definitely need to study a lot.
Avoid taking this class with Gooding. She talks a lot about her personal stories in lectures and leaves no time for actual content, causing the lectures to feel extremely rushed. Your grade is based solely on 3 exams and they are very challenging. You could study for hours/ days and still not even pass.
She is as terrible as everyone on here has said. There is no way to stress enough what lengths you should go to to avoid her at all costs. she is insufferable. She lectures in an incredibly slow place with such a monotone voice. there isnt enough Adderall to allow me and my add to every try to pay attention to anything that comes from her mouth.
it is the second week of class and i want to drop it already. she does nothing but talk about herself. She somehow manages to take interesting information, make it boring and the also somehow relate it back to herself. Please do yourself a favor and listen to these reviews they are not lying
Overall a fine teacher. The class is difficult and she does care about her students and she knows the material well. The lectures were a bit sloppy and unorganized. Graded only on exams and nothing else. If you need to take the class right away, you will do fine. If you have a year or more left, wait for a new instructor.
Prof. Gooding is super knowledgeable and the course content (Abnormal Psych) is interesting enough in itself. Her online asynchronous course is a mess. She reused lecture recordings from Spring 2020 and they were very poorly organized (made it very difficult to group content together if you prefer handwritten notes). Exams are wack.
AVOID!!! If you have the opportunity to take literally any professor, I implore you to take them instead. Professor Gooding is dull, unengaging, and demanding. Her exams were unfairly difficult and expected way too much. Her lectures were painful to watch. Reading the textbook was more exciting than listening to her talk. If you have her, good luck
Gooding seems like a very nice person and is very clearly passionate about her field but her teaching is not good at all. Grading criteria were very unclear and most of what she had in her lectures contradicted what was in the textbook. She was hard to contact and she never gave straight or clear answers.
The topics were interesting, but Gooding made this class unreasonably difficult. She's a nice person, but not a good professor. The exams are hard, even if you study and feel prepared. The lectures always took much longer than 75 mins. The ALA assignments were graded unfairly. I emailed Gooding twice to say I was struggling and she didn't reply.
Dr. Gooding is a very smart woman, no doubt; however, she is not a very good professor. She holds us to extremely high standards and was not flexible at all despite the current global pandemic. Her tests were extremely hard with questions that were extremely specific with details that were not expected for us to know in this survey class.
Do not take this course if it is online, Professor Gooding did basically nothing to accommodate school going online due to the pandemic. She was unfair with what was covered on exam. Her grade cut off was something I have never seen before in my four years at UW Madison. She expects her students to accommodate her where she does not accommodate.
I could say allot but, simply put do not take a class lead by this professor. She stumbles through lectures. Due dates and required readings are vague. The biggest hurdle to success in this course is the professor. Discussions are graded based on a strict rubric instead of engagement. This list does not convey my disappointment perfectly.
ALA's that you have to do, don't include what clearly needs to be stated and then you get points marked off for not including what she wanted. Grading is not clear. Teaching style is not helpful in any way. Exams are hard because they are so specific and she does ask questions straight from textbook. Does not compromise with students needs.
It's frustrating because I obviously read the reviews before taking this class so I wasn't expecting an amazing professor. However, you always have that little bit of hope that those people were just wrong. They're not. Do yourself a favor and if you can wait until a spring semester to take this course do it, it's usually a different prof.
Gooding really does not know how to communicate well with students. Like everyone else said, she really only cares about her research and is so incredibly repetitive in her lectures. Her exams are super difficult and really annoying to take. I'd recommend not taking this class with her.
I can not stress enough how much you should avoid this professor at all costs. I love the information in this course and was really looking forward to learning more, but her teaching style turned me off completely to even wanting to continue the class. Lectures are bland, she talks about herself too much, then grades on information not taught.
Do NOT take a class with this professor. I can understand wanting to take some class because it sounds interesting, but please trust me and take the course with literally any other teacher. She will kill your interest in a fascinating class like abnormal psychology with mind-numbingly boring lectures, poorly written tests, and inconsistent grading.
As shown by her research, one would expect Dr. Gooding to be a solid teacher. She is not. Inconsistent with deadlines. Slides are a complete mess. The exams are so wordy, almost like paragraph questions. They also do not reflect what the bulk of the lecture is. You can study for weeks and get a B or C. Gooding seems to only be here for research.
Don't even bother trying to pass the exams, you won't. No matter how much you study and how prepared you think you are, the exams do not reflect any of the information taught to you. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. She does not teach, she throws information at you and expects you to become an expert. Absolutely horrible class. Would never recommend.
For god's sake listen to these reviews and don't take this class. Her way of teaching is so inconsistent and messy. Her deadlines are all over the place. Her exams are so wordy and don't test us on what we learned. She told us to read the textbook but then tells us that the textbook is wrong... she literally only cares about her own research.
Gooding is definitely only here to have her research funded. Even when speaking with my advisor about this course (Psych 405) they said that many people find her to be extremely challenging Tests do not accurately reflect what we were taught in class If you're taking this online block a lot of extra time off for it because lectures take a long time
Avoid her like SARS-CoV-2. Literally. If the class is online, don't take it with her. Awful powerpoint lectures, weird due dates, and test questions are super subjective. Need help? Have fun at her office hours at 9 pm on SUNDAYS.
do NOT take this class with this professor. I felt like I was set up to fail. Because there are only three categories of assignments in this class you automatically dig yourself into a hole if you do bad on one exam. Some questions are choose the most correct answer and are highly subjective, overall wording is not good. Choose another professor.
Avoid at all costs. She is incredibly unorganized and puts zero effort into this class and clearly doesn't care about her students. Her "lectures" are pre-recorded slideshows which are way longer than a normal lecture and incredibly boring. She has so many random assignments and inconsistent due dates.
Avoid at all costs. Lectures are slideshows with pre-recorded audio on each slide, which feels super impersonal. Lectures take a crazy long time to get through, much more than the 75 min allotted to the class. Exams are written with the intention of being ultra-specific. Class sucks the motivation out of you, sad because it's an interesting topic
Dont. Youre welcome.
Avoid Diane Gooding if you can. She is not at all knowledgeable about psychology and if she is, it does NOT show in her lectures. She creates incredibly vague exam questions and then lists multiple correct answers. If online, AVOID AT ALL COSTS. She uses Honorlock and her lectures are laughable--powerpoints with audio clips--no videos.
She had no schedule, and just announce things which ever came her mind. This made me so confused.
She is very experienced, but consistently fills her lectures with personal stories that have little application to the subject matter. She loves teaching, but takes roundabout methods of teaching ideas that could be summarized quickly. She also shared her political opinions quite frequently, and drew conclusions using her preferences.
Hands down worst professor I have ever had. Theres no point in going to class because all she does is read off the slides. Not knowledgeable about the topic and always gets off topic. Before this class I was thinking about pursuing a degree in Psych but she ruined that for me. Tests are hard and no easy hw points. DO NOT TAKE THIS ClASS!!!!!!!!!!!
I too chose to ignore the rating and I regretted this decision through the entire semester. I had to teach myself everything for this class because her lectures make no sense. You are graded on 3 exams and that is it. During an exam she will not answer any clarifying questions, even if a word you are confused about is not a class term. DO NOT TAKE!
I would not recommend taking this class. I am pursuing a career in mental health, and this class did absolutely nothing for me. I literally would have benefited more reading the DSM-5 cover to cover. So beyond frustrating going to a 75 minute class twice a week only to have to spend hours teaching it yourself.
I wished her TA taught the course instead. She makes abnormal psychology less exciting to learn than it actually is. For an exam, she said we should know how to "diagnose" disorders & that is wrong b/c we're not professionals just students. Lectures are boring and dull. Her examples are helpful but take a long to explain, making it more boring.
Probably the worst professor I have had at UW. She goes on so many random tangents that have nothing to do with the material. Grades are made up of 3 exams with a 95% being an A. Do not take this class with her unless you have to
She goes on many irrelevant tangents almost breaking HIPPA in most of her "examples" and says some pretty offensive things for being a professor that teaches about mental health disorders. Expect to teach yourself most of the material because her lecture slides are completely disorganized & not helpful & the only grades are her 3 midterms.
I should have taken these ratings seriously when I so ever CARELESSLY chose to take her course. Her lectures consist of horribly set up powerpoints and her basically reading off of a script too fast to take good notes on. The only thing that matters in her class for grades is how well you take tests and teach yourself the material.
I NEVER write reviews. this is my first time I actually write one bc she is just AWFUL! I'm so serious when I say all she does in class is talk about herself. If you subtracted all the random stories and tangents she ALWAYS goes off on, lecture would be over in maybe 20mins. Exams are also pretty difficult.
Dr. Gooding gets a bad rep, but she's actually incredibly caring. She does seem to go off on many tangents, but I have found her stories to help me remember the material better. TAKE REALLY GOOD LECTURE NOTES and be sure to talk over the information with a friend, you'll do fine (probably an A/B, as her cut off for an A is a 95%).
as you've probably read on other reviews, her lectures are useless and the textbook is difficult to read. honestly just don't waste your time by going to lecture. instead, watch some crash course videos, look at her lecture outlines, and use some quizlets and you should be okay.
Dr. Gooding was clearly quite knowledgeable but her lectures were all over the place. She spent half the time telling irrelevant stories then skipping over the important slides that you'd be tested on so quickly there was never any chance to write anything down. Also for a class on psychiatric illnesses, she said some pretty dang offensive things.
The lecture material is interesting, however, the professor was not strong. She talks an insane amount about her personal life, to the point it takes away from the material. Additionally, she reads from a piece of paper for the WHOLE class. Too quick, too distracting. Exams are tough, wordy and obscure. Honestly, the worst professor I had at UW.
AVOID! She just gave us 12 min to do course evaluations and asked us to write about how bad the technology in this room is. I've had three other classes in this room and not one other professor has had trouble with the projector. Cutoff for A is a 95%. She gives invalid information in lecture. She said cortisol increases inflammation? AVOID!
Everyone talks bad about Professor Gooding but she's honestly not bad. I agree that she goes off on tons of tangents and doesn't stick to material well, but she's very knowledgeable and a very kind person. If you read and pay attention exams aren't bad. Keep an open mind and the class is pretty enjoyable
This professor is awful. The topic is so interesting but its ruines by her teaching. She doesnt know how to use technology. Although she gives many examples, she spends 30 minutes talking about irrelevant tangents of each. She is also not willing to help outside of office hours as she said, my door closes right at 3:30.
I've had this professor for one month and I am going to rip my hair out because she is slow, boring, and conceited. I am sitting in class and we haven't done anything for a half hour because her computer died. She reads the lecture slides instead of teaching and tells irrelevant stories about herself. She shows no care for her students. AVIOD HER!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSORs CLASS!!!!!!!! DO IT ONLINE OR WHATEVER, DONT TAKE THE LECTURE! You will regret!!!! She never tell you important things, but all her non-relevant experiences. Very disrespectful and self defensive! Never know how to use technology and never prepared it before class. Very confusing examples and never logical. Just dont
The topic is so interesting but she spends too much time talking about herself, is extremely pretentious and gets very defensive if someone disagrees with her. There were unfair exam ?s that were not talked about in class OR in the assigned reading but she said we SHOULD'VE KNOWN what pages to read even tho the syllabus was wrong. AVOID HER CLASS
My first review got taken down for my use of profanity so I'll keep it simple this time. Just stay away my friends.
Worst class I've taken at UW. Dr Gooding is conceited, incredibly condescending to students and fails to convey material in any sort of engaging way. She will literally read definitions verbatim off of a sheet paper to you, and rather than explain concepts, gives irrelevant and elementary anecdotes that will not help you learn. Stay away my friends
Doesn't stay on topic during lecture and talks about herself most of the time. Not organized and your 3 exams are youre only grade. The tests are extremely difficult and she isn't open to hearing different perspectives on her answers. very defensive when someone proves her wrong. very lazy also.
Good person, kind of pretentious. Often late to class. She made the cutoff for an A in our course 95%. 95%! Kind of ridiculous. It took her 3 weeks (20 days) to grade one of our exams (which are scantron). She clearly demonstrates that she doesn't care about her students performance in the class.
Nice person, mediocre lecturer, inconsistent tests, goes on tangents/off topic every lecture. Not great at taking criticism, incredibly defensive, will not listen to the class whatsoever.
Although very knowledgeable about the topic, Professor Gooding spent too much time talking about her own personal achievements. Tests were fair. Comes to class late.
(Abnrml Psych) Class material is undeniably interesting, but the class is made difficult for really no reason. Gooding writes the exams herself and you don't get them back. She's very humorous and straight up but I felt the class lacked organization and structure. You're only graded on two exams and a final, which doesn't fit the teaching style.
Exams are hard. Doesn't really teach but talks about herself a lot. 10/10 would not recommend.
One of my favorite professors in the psych dept! She's incredible at what she does, yet still down-to-earth, relateable, and kind. Exams are tough but fair.
Her grading is unpredictable as is the lecturing. She spends very little time in class discussing the topics that you will be graded on. She is extremely unclear and unorganized in the presentation of material. I would not advise anyone ever to take a class with her.
Hands down the WORST professor at UW! She goes off tangent literally all the time. Out of 75 minutes of lecture time, you can expect her to teach for just 20+ minutes. Talks about herself A LOT. LIKE SERIOUSLY A LOT. Assigns 7-10 readings at a time to make up for the fact that she doesn't teach anything in class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!
I didn't think she was as bad as some of the other reviewers were saying. She did go on tangents, but she still taught the material well and tried to be as accessible for her students as possible. She did go on conferences occasionally, so we had to watch video lectures instead.
Gooding's lectures were all over the place, her stories often took too long and then when real information was presented she skimmed over it. I underestimated the first test because it was all on psychological perspectives and didn't study as much as I should have, BEWARE OF THE FIRST TEST. After that I studied hard and did well on the exams.
Your grade in the class depends on your 3 exams and nothing else. There is no homework, and no final. I thought that the material was very interesting, but I was not a fan of Professor Gooding. She wasted a ridiculous amount of class time, and was frequently disrespectful to her students. On the other hand, her lecture outlines were very helpful.
I loved the material we learned in this class, but Prof. Gooding was probably one of the most arrogant and off-topic lecturer I've ever had. She spent almost half of the class period talking about completely irrelevant things. Her lectures are very content heavy, and I am glad she made lecture outlines. Exams were somewhat difficult.
