Dr. Abbott was a fair professor and did his best to give students the materials they need to succeed. The lectures got a little long, but I thought his concept maps were super helpful. The exam was challenging but the grading was reasonable. Would take one of his classes again!
Dr Abbott was nice, but he crammed in SO much information, and most of it had to do with what he was interested in vs what we really needed to learn from Bio151. The exams and quizzes were so hard and all the questions were in paragraph form which made it difficult to comprehend. Felt more like advanced biology vs beginner biology.
HE IS A NICE MAN BUT DONT LET THAT FOOL YOU. HE THINKS THIS IS THE ONLY CLASS WE HAVE AND PROBABLY THINKS THAT WE HAVE TO DISSECT THE ENTIRE HUMAN BODY TO BECOME A MEDICAL DOCTOR. INSTEAD OF CUTTING THE LECTURE CONTENT, EACH LECTURE WAS SOMETIMES 130 MINUTES. SARS-COVID-2 IS PROBABLY MADE FOR HIM SO THAT HE CAN TALK ABOUT WHATEVER HE WANTS
Lectures are long + dense, but quality lecture notes are provided. Tons of content covered very quickly, and it can be hard to keep up especially asynchronously. His "concept maps" are good to remember/visualize the info. Activities and quizzes are tough but doable. Felt like I memorized stuff, but didn't really learn. Good sense of humor.
Great person, but beware of what you are getting yourself into. His lectures are dense and with online class have been around twice normal lecture time. Takes FOREVER to get through the material and there is so much of it. But very interesting
Dr. Abbott has a lot to cram in just a few weeks, so his lectures are really fast-paced. Because of this, he does not have a whole lot of time to elaborate on a lot of the mechanisms. But, he is very passionate about what he teaches, and makes the lectures go by quick. He has a great sense of humor too!
Dr. Abbot has a lot to fit into 5 weeks of lecture. The best way to succeed in his class is to use his online lecture notes and prepare yourself before going to lecture. He lectures fast and gives you a ton of info at once. He has a ton of passion for what he is teaching and you should listen to what he has to say.
Nice Scottish accent. Very word heavy powerpoint and he goes through them very fast. Has the class try to draw very complex system illustrations very quickly. Hard material that he crammed into 4 weeks of class. Good teacher, but hard material and class.
Abbott just gave a lot of material to memorize and asked very specific questions on exams.
Definitely a good professor, but the material covered in lecture is incredibly dense. Get ready to study hard
Tons of materials covered in a single lecture with overwhelming info on the slides. Definitely developed a super-speed note taking skills.
Least favorite out of the 3. Lectures were useless because he only spent minutes on slides jam packed with information. Didn't even go to lecture, just read lecture notes on my own outside of class. Be prepared to write a lot and very fast if you do go to lecture.
Dr. Abbott taught the physiology unit, which I thought was the most interesting. Print off his notes and bring them to class. The book is somewhat helpful. Exams are similar to pre-lecture quizzes and in-class activities. He's pretty clear on what he expected us to know on the exam. Very passionate about his job, sweet accent, good lecture.
Dr. Abbott taught the most interesting section of the course, yet it was also the most challenging material. His lectures went way beyond what the textbook taught, so I found it more effective to just study his lecture videos and pre-lecture quizzes. His accent is awesome, and he makes class interesting. Not a bad class! Puts lecture videos online
Dr. Abbott simplifies complex concepts fairly well in lecture. He also requires you to do pre-lecture quizzes which are annoying initially but are beneficial in the long-run.
Very cool guy and an okay lecturer, but slides are very hard to follow. I had to do a lot of work outside of class to understand the material, but he gives great resources online that help learn the material. I recommend preparing for every lecture before going to understand what he is trying to say on the slides.
Dr. Abbott is the best professor I have had on campus yet. Lectures are interesting, he's fun to listen too, and very energetic! He cares a ton about how his students do in the class. Lots of material but if you put the time into it, its not that bad! Also participate in office hours, he is extremely helpful then!
Great Professor, but he gives you a TON of information. Tests are very straight forward if you pay attention to every lecture.
Abbott is very smart and knows his material well. However, he almost knows it too well and makes the class very challenging to follow. His lectures are very detail oriented and we had a lot to learn in a short period of time. He is very intelligent and knows his stuff but makes the class very challenging and you must be ready to teach yourself.
Dr. Abbott is adorable. I still pronounce "capillary" in a Scottish accent when I read it. He definitely wants you to understand the material though, & his section is tough. I watched every lecture twice & only got an 80 on the exam. But he's so incredibly intelligent & a really great teacher. Explains hard concepts very well. Take him if you can!
Abbott was a great professor, but had (in my opinion) pretty challenging test questions. They did relate to practice problems he had given previously, however they were still tough. He gave a large activity on a Friday that was due on a Sunday, which was pretty horrible.
He is everything a professor should be in terms of making students learn the material. His lectures are boring and confusing though.
Dr. Abbott is BY FAR the best professor I have ever had at UW. His lectures are interesting, and his scottish accent makes them that much better. He covers a lot of material, so be ready for a lot of concepts and reviewing throughout his section. He is one of the few professors I have had that I believe truly care about their students. Take Abbott!
Such an awesome professor! Content was dense but he always did a very good job at explaining it. His review session was SUPER helpful. He actually come prepared with an outline of what he would review for us depending on the topics covered.
Best professor I have had at Madison by far. He got me very interested in physiology. His notes and lectures were very clear and his online office hours were really helpful. His exam was tough, but doable. I would recommend him 100%!
Great prof. Book is 100% not used. Material tested comes only from lecture and lecture slides. Make sure you review the questions from quizzes and clicker questions as he used several of these exact questions on the test. Pretty easy if you study the lecture slides.
Very enthusiastic about his material and a very funny guy. The content is very interesting and keeps you engaged. He rips through difficult material pretty fast so I hope your T.A. Is good. Paul shout out!
Great teacher! Likes to make jokes and is really enthusiastic about there material. He really rips through a lot of difficult material though so hopefully your T.A. Is good. Office hours should be taken advantage of.
He's a really interesting lecturer and really really helpful during lecture and his online office hours. He puts up the lecture slides ahead of time and he also makes really nice study guides for each topic. For writing parts, he sends out feedback for each of his students, so you know he read them and tries to help you.
He's a really great teacher. You can tell he loves what he does and wants you to understand what's going on and not just memorize stuff for the exam. Unfortunately he only has online office hours and not actual meeting office hours. He doesn't make you read the textbook, although he gives you recommended pages to supplement what is taught in class.
Great teacher. Makes you apply info instead of just memorizing it. Very willing to answer any questions and tries to engage students during every lecture. Took some time to get used to his accent but that might just be me. The material is not a walk in the park but he puts his lecture notes and powerpoints online which makes it easier to study.
Sometimes his accent gets in the way of communication, but most of the time it's just entertaining (like having Shrek for a professor). Dr. Abbot was the best professor we had for this class.
Dude's a beast. Has a awesome Scottish accent and says funny words like capillaries. Very straight forward in examples, tells you hows it is, answers questions and doesn't expect you to read from the book.Tests are hard but fair, no surprises. Favorite professor of all time.
DR. ABBOTT WAS GREAT AT HIS JOB! SUPER HELPFUL WITH ANY CLARIFYING QUESTIONS AND HIS TEST WAS STRAIGHT FORWARD. GO TO CLASS, HE USES A LOT OF CHALKBOARD DRAWINGS THAT ARE NEEDED BUT NOT OVERLY COMPLICATED.
When teaching Animal Physiology, Abbott was both pleasant and helpful. Content entails a lot of memorization, but he provided clear notesheets to study for--wonderful for preparing students for his exam. Don't trust students giving poor reviews--one of my favorite UW professors thus far.
It's interesting to see such high reviews for this professor, because he's actually quite terrible. His teaching is not so much teaching, but spitting out facts for students to memorize. We don't need teachers for this, so his job is essentially void. If attendance were not mandatory, the book could easily replace him.
OK professor, don't need the book, sometimes covers topics in too little detail- favorite phrase "for this level of introductory biology we're saying that..." such that some things are borderline false if you've taken any higher coursework. Exams are do-able, professor welcomes questions after lecture. Quizzes(3)in lecture expect too much from you.
Outstanding professor who gives crystal clear engaging lectures and provides his own set of in depth notes/expectations as well. Also extremely helpful with questions and very organized. His test was one of the most clearly worded I've ever taken and very fair based on what was covered. Take his section and enjoy/master animal physiology!
One of the best professors on campus. Other professors should emulate Dr. Abbott! Crystal clear lectures, amazing online notes posted after each lecture and online office hours every week. You don't have to touch the book. Exam is not easy, but is fair if you pay attention in lecture. Take Dr. Abbott, you won't regret it!
Exams are absolutely not a measure of lecture material but rather insignificant, word tricks that aren't found at all in any of the material he says he will base the tests off. Get ready for useless studying and trying to get tricked by questions that aren't even relevant.
Great professor, good sense of humor and crazy accent that will keep you interested. Just hope that he gets paired with 2 other decent professors for 152!
TAKE HIM or you will regret later!
Get him as ur professor hes amazing. He gives you notes + powerpoint + a sweet accent. I hit a 95 on his exam
Far and away the best professor I have ever had. Ever. He made everything crystal clear, and makes his expectations of the class well known. Clearly wants his students to succeed, as he has plenty of "virtual office hours" where students can ask anonymous questions. Test was a fair assessment of what he taught. Take this prof if you can!
Best professor I've had on campus. Extremely organized. Makes it clear what you need to know, and spends time to make sure everyone understands. Uses all types of resources to make learning the material easier.
He was a very good professor. His notes online are amazing and you don't really need to read the book. His average on the test was 87% and the other section's was 63%. I think you get the picture.
Awesome professor. Very clear lectures and makes it obvious what he wants you to know for the exam. Although he covers a lot of content, it's all very interesting and the exam was a lot easier than I expected it to be. A great professor, great guy.
I don't know if there is any other science professor who is helpful and approachable than him. Make sure you keep up with him, because the materials get overwhelming at the end, it's nothing unexpected as he covers the whole entire animal physiology in 4 weeks. And yeah..he is pretty hot, in a sense his accent and teaching style;)
One of the best science professors I have ever had. His notes are amazing, you do not even need the textbook if you read his explanation of the notes. And, very helpful and approachable. I wish he taught more undergraduate courses. His cute British accent is another reason you don't wanna miss his lecture. I miss taking his class.
Probably the best professor I've had at Madison. It's refreshing to see a professor put in a lot of work outside of class for our benefit (for example-he personally responds to short answer questions you complete online). Always helpful-responded to all of my emails within 8 hours (and one was sent at midnight). Not difficult if you do the work.
Diagrams were a bit messy, but great lecturer. Very approachable and helpful with questions. Very clear about explaining physiology, and, yes, great accent as well.
Professor Abbott is a very good at giving lectures and explaining concepts clearly and completely. He always emphasizes things that will appear on exams and doesn't require his students to use book. Test wasn't easy but studying hard pays off.GREAT
Abbott is one of the best professors I've ever had in my life, hands down. He his only problem is that some of his diagrams get cluttered, but he still has lecture notes online, which summarize everything. He's also really helpful and always willing to help whether in person or over email. Oh, and also notable, his accent is simply immaculate!
Great Accent. In all seriousness, he is a good prof. His notes in lecture can become garbled(due to complexity of systems) but overall very clear and effective in explaining things. His online notes are great-dont really need to go to lecture, but its worth it just to hear his accent.
A great professor for a very difficult subject. Explains the subject matter thoroughly. You'll need to read to cement the knowledge in your head because these are complex systems, but he breaks them down well. Don't be afraid to devote pages of notes to diagrams because sometimes drawing diagrams is the only way to take notes in his lecture.
Professor Abbott was an amazing teacher. He was really fun and kept things interesting. You have to love his accent.
Exams very very difficult, but very interesting lectures.
Abbot was by far the best of the 151/152 profs. He covers a lot and moves quickly, but was very clear in presenting the material. Very friendly and helpful. Would love to have him again.
Prof Abbott was a great prof! I went to his office hours and they were very helpful. I made notecards from his lecture and ended up getting an A on his phys exam. I'd take him again for sure!
He is excellent at teaching a pretty difficult subject (physiology.) He's funny and super helpful.
Best prof I've had
Definitely had to know your stuff for the exam, but his exams were exactly how he said. By far the best professor i've ever had for any type of class.
Great Teacher!

Very straight-forward test. No surprises. Lots of info (physiology) condensed into an easy, simplified version of the material. One of best professors I've ever had, by far. Take him if you can get him!
He actively teaches with lots of diagrams and superb clarity. Best professor I've had so far.
