This class was super broad, so it's a lot of new and complex things super quickly. I would not say I am a fan of AOS in general, but Vimont is AMAZING and held office hours where he was great at explaining what was confusing me. Lab was a decent amount of work, but definitely helped to understand lecture.
Vimont is a great person and accommodating, but for some reason this material is awful to learn. If you're not familiar with physics, there's just a learning curve. If you're struggling go to office hours. Vimont and the TA's will work through the homework with you and you'll be fine. I'd take a class with Professor Vimont again, just not this one.
Professor Vimont is great - super passionate and funny. But the course content is pretty tough, even for science-minded folks. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for preparing for the exams. Worth taking if you're ready to put in the work.
Professor Vimont makes atmospheric science fun and accessible compared to other physics-type classes. He gives great lectures, and office hours are useful. The textbook is also an easy read. Note that the lectures and textbook have built-in comprehension questions which are graded.
I was struggling a lot in this class due to not being good at it but he is super helpful at office hours and truly cares about every single student. He will go out of his way to make sure nobody fails his class. Super helpful professor but very hard content in his class.
Lectures mostly cover textbook material, but explain it much better. He encourages students to ask questions and attend office hours. This class is not for easy credits, but I wouldn't consider it difficult as long as you keep up with the readings. It's a nice class for science-oriented people who haven't tried AOS before- but does involve physics!
Professor Vimont is one of the kindest and most down to earth people I've ever met. Aside from him personally though, the course is a little challenging but definitely manageable. The class will go a lot smoother for you if you have taken a physics class before. All tests are curved and he has very clear grading criteria in the syllabus.
I stopped going to class after three weeks and my grade skyrocketed. Just take notes off the PowerPoints posted to Canvas and work through it yourself. Either way, the coursework is very hard for an intro class, especially if you don't have prior knowledge of physics.
This class is way too hard to be advertised as an "easy science credit". If you are not a science-brained person, this class will go completely over your head. I would say about 80% of the class is confused about literally everything. Vimont is great and is extremely passionate, but the difficulty of this class really takes away from that.
I LOVE Professor Vimont! Amazing guy, always has a smile on his face, and he is a great way to start my week and start my morning three days a week. Great connection with his TA's. However, this class is WAY too difficult for an intro class. I could go on about this, but the lectures go quick and the homework takes a long time. Be cautious.
Difficult class but Vimont is the most caring professor I have ever had. TAs were great too. I learned a ton, but there was a lot of content, reading, and homework to get through every week. Lectures were entertaining and went fast.
Prof Vimont is very clearly passionate about the subject, but it is just too difficult for an intro course. There is so much material to learn in a short period of time. Lectures are basically mandatory, the weekly hw is tedious, & there are 4 quizzes that make up a large percentage of your grade. Not the "easy" science credit it is advised to be.
Vimont is a great prof who cares about his students learning and the study weather. ATM OCN 100 is not an easy class for non-science people, but if you give a little effort and do top-hat you can succeed. Vimont and his TA's are very good about answering questions on disc boards too. Overall great teacher, tougher class.
Very caring and helpful, you can tell he really enjoys teaching the class. Brings cookies to office hours sometimes. Really wants students to succeed. Content was pretty hard, I needed office hours a lot, but he and the TAs were always happy to help. Hosts lectures over zoom and records them to watch later. Quizzes were online, and optional exam.
This class is WAY too hard to be considered an "easy" science class for non-sciency people. This man moves way too fast and expects us to know concepts that may seem "basic" to him because hello his job is weather and climate, but I am a mere student taking this class for science credit, so no sir I do not know what that means.
He was a great professor who did a great job accounting for student needs and wellness in various ways, including posting lectures online and having discussion boards for all assignments there for helping students. I would highly recommend him, despite his class maybe being a bit challenging if you go to lecture a good grade is easily achievable.
Do not take this class. To simply put it: my lowest grade of my sophomore year was this one, which in my opinion is ridiculous for a science breadth. No extra credit, quizzes average 75% for the whole class, homework 75% (if lucky), and thats all you're graded on. Good luck if you take this class. Also, he doesn't respond to emails.
Prof. Vimont is a fine guy. It's clear that he cares about weather and climate, but this class is simply a no-go for non-science majors. Do not take if you are simply trying to get a science req out of the way. Lots of reading and very difficult homework, plus he will not reply to your emails.
There's a lot of content during the lecture, but professor Vimont is extremely helpful during office hours and explains everything thoroughly. You can tell her cares about his students mental health and well-being.
Professor Vimont is very positive and funny; my friend and I are always cracking up in class! He cares about all of his students and keeps his lectures interesting.
Really nice teacher even though I did not find this class very interesting (AOS 100). He certainly makes it more bearable with his happy tone and terrible jokes.
Professor Vimont is a great teacher but for a level 100 class and an introductory class, it wasn't easy. The quizzes were open notes but were extremely hard. Lectures have a lot of information all at once and he goes very fast. Emailing him does not work he does not email back. I thought it would be easier for level 100 class.
Prof Vimont is a good and caring professor. He clearly has passion for what he lectures on. He is always available at office hours often and always makes sure you understand everything before you leave. He was also very lenient with his grading, allowing multiple options in case outside circumstances effect your grade.
Professor Vimont is the type of person you know was meant to teach! During office hours, he makes an effort at getting to know his students and making sure all of their questions are explained thoroughly. I will definitely be taking another class taught by Professor Vimont!
Professor Vimont is an amazing teacher; he's very passionate about these topics and it shows in his lectures. Office Hours are super helpful for homework questions, and he is super approachable and willing to help, and even sometimes brings treats for students. Definitely one of my favorite professors I've had here!
Phenomenal professor - maybe the best I've ever had. Very considerate about mental health and student wellbeing. Class is definitely not an easy A, but if you go in ready to put in the work it is achievable.
He is very passionate about teaching meteorology, but this is not an easy science course. There are a lot of confusing concepts, with that being said go to the TA's office hours they are very helpful.
Prof. Vimont cares about his students and tries to make lectures more interesting by telling jokes. Prof Vimont is passionate about the material, which leads him to go too fast and jump between concepts. He has discussion boards online for homework/quiz reviews which he occasionally forgets to engage in, leaving students with unanswered questions.
Do not take weather if you think you're getting an easy grade, you will suffer.
Easy physical science credit IF you attend all the lectures, take good notes, and check the discussion boards for the HW assignments before turning in. Very accessible outside of class and a caring person in general. Attend office hours - you might get a lucky trip to the AOS roof. Open note exams and Zoom recordings of class if you need to miss.
Prof. Vimont is really funny and he cares about you as a human being. His class is a little hard but I would definitely recommend Vimont to anyone! if you ever have questions hes pretty responsive and helpful.
Professor Vimont is a great and funny guy, who makes lectures enjoyable. However, for an intro class, this was much harder than expected, and if you are looking for an easy Natural Science credit, this is probably not the way to go. Quizzes and the final were both online and open note, and Vimont and his TAs did a great job being accessible.
The class itself was not a guaranteed easy A, but if you pay attention in class and take good notes you should do fine. The homework was pretty tough, but the quizzes were online and open-note. Professor Vimont was very accessible, with online office hours and discussion posts to answer homework questions.
He is exceptional at making himself available outside of class and he posts discussion boards for every assignment so if you need help, you'll be covered. He clearly cares about his students, but the homework and quizzes are pretty difficult for an introductory course. However, there are a lot of grading safety nets imposed so you won't fail.
Prof. Vimont is quite possibly the best professor for an easy science credit. Genuine guy and actually cares about making sure that you're doing okay as a person, not just a student. The class itself is a little hard to understand but all the quizzes are online so it's relatively easy to get a good grade. Great guy. Great class.
Vimont is a great guy, but this class is absolutely heinous. My advisor recommended it to me directly from a list of classes entitled "Science Classes for Non-science People" and this couldn't have been a worse recommendation. This class is extremely difficult with an absurd amount of material. Do not, under any circumstances, take this class.
While I do not like science at all professor Vimont makes learning about clouds pretty fun. This class does have a fair amount of readings, homework, and a few quizzes. However, if you go to class and read the textbook you will likely be okay. Professor Vimont was also very gracious with his office hours and grading I believe as well.
Great guy. However lectures are not mandatory to go to as he holds a zoom call. Tophat is required for the class so you have to pay the monthly subscription for that. The weekly homework and biweekly quizzes are fairly difficult considering this is an entry level course. Wouldn't really recommend the class if you're looking for an easy A.
Took this class for a physical science credit. Dan is a great professor and going in to office hours helped a ton. Not an easy A at all, but lectures are interesting and engaging.
Dan was a really great professor. Only took this class because I needed a physical science credit, but he is clearly passionate about the subject and cares for his students. The content is hard and the textbook can be difficult to read, but he makes himself quite accessible so don't be shy to reach out for extra help.
Class is pretty hard to be an entry level course. You will definitely have to work for whatever grade you get, but it helps that Professor Vimont is great
Really nice and thoughtful teacher, I enjoyed class with him and he is great at what he does
Professor Vimont was a great professor! He was always very helpful and had great lectures that were very informational. I would definitely recommend him and take him again. The course is slightly difficult, but he does his best to make sure everybody is succeeding the best they can.
I will be the first to say I am naturally TERRIBLE at science, and was terrified to take a college class in it. Science minded or not, if you go to lectures, pay attention, attend office hours, and read most of the textbook, you can get an A. On the homework, TAs and professor will tell you different answers, so always go to the Professor's hours.
Dan is one of the most genuine professors I've ever had. Go to his office hours, get to know him, get his help on the homework, and this class becomes cake. Some people thought his exams were tough, I completely disagree; they were all very fair but his homework can be challenging. He's a total dad. He loves drizzle and weather in general.
Dan was a super great guy!! Very nice and accommodating to the students, but the final was awful. If you skip lecture a lot (like I started to do) you wont pass. Study from the online lecture slides because thats exactly what the tests are.
Good guy and all, but unless you want to devote hours on end for what is supposed to be an easy science gen-ed requirement, stay away. Lectures are very dry, cover a wide variety of topics, does not seem to go too specific into anything. Homeworks very challenging (will need help from TA/classmates), and the exams will blow your mind. TOUGH!!!
Professor Vimont is a funny guy with typical dad jokes. He's a fun professor, but the class is pretty difficult for a gen-ed. Don't expect an easy A from this class, get ready to study and work (especially if you're not science or weather minded)!!
Honestly this guy is the best. He's so smart about weather and climates but makes this class easy to follow along. The tests are hard but not unmanageable. He uploads all the slides and even sometimes holds office hours online so we can reach him. He also really cares about his students like we are his kids and makes lots of dad jokes. Love him!!!
Look. DO NOT take this if you just want an easy science credit. Do. Not. It's not crazy difficult but you definitely have to put a lot of time in for a good grade. If you're taking other hard classes and completely ignore this one, you will struggle. It's much harder than you'd think.
love this man, Dan is the best and tells great dad jokes. HOWEVER, do NOT take this class if you are looking for a simple science credit. The class is based around 2 midterms, a final, 4 homework assignments, and Tophat questions. The material is really hard for a 100 level class especially if you aren't in the discussion, easier classes out there
ugh love this man! Dan if you're reading this, take me trout fishing! He geeks me out on the daily and totally turned me into a weather person. WAY to qualified to teach a 100.
Great Human being, smart and funny. I find his problem to be is he knows the material so well it is hard for him to break it down into a 100 level explanation and makes it super confusing. Homework is graded for accuracy/is graded too hard/is worth 25% of your grade. Exams are fair, but lecture can be unbearable. Simply, take it with Martin.
Really funny guy. Half the lectures are spent at TopHat and looking at the current weather. Tests are pretty easy, but homework can be confusing at times. Going in for office hours is a big help, and Dan is really willing to get to know you and answer your questions. 10/10 would take again
I liked Vimont as a person. He kept lectures light by making awful jokes and was excited about what he taught but his multiple choice tests were actually pretty complicated and his review guides for tests were not always understandable or helpful at all. Definitely a harder class than it needed to be.
Dan is extremely kind and is funny if you like bad jokes. He is a great teacher but his class is harder than you would expect.
Dan changed my career path. I went into this class as a business major but Dan enlightened to the wonders of Atm Sciences. His lectures are on point and notes are always online. I've learned a lot and the exams are fair. He looks out for this students by being motivational and a great guy! If you want to get on his good side, mention drizzle. 3
Dan Vimont is a great teacher with really kinda dorky but super funny dad jokes that you just have to laugh at. He really cares about this school and the students in his class. He will schedule extra office hours when needed. I loved his class and his goofiness. Hell encourage you to take pictures and go on merry go rounds.
As long as you read the textbook and look at his lecture notes you'll be fine. Sometimes confuses himself and tells incredibly cheesy dad jokes, but keeps you interested in the class. Laughs at his own jokes so you know he's a dad. Also his voice sounds like he should be a weather reporter. Also be prepared for spontaneous tangents.
His lectures are easy to get through and homework that is assigned in lecture is occasional and manageable. He's very accessible through his office hours, and he makes announcements regarding changes to those times. Sometimes goes off on tangents but is generally amusing. As he once said, "laugh at my jokes and I'll make the curve nicer."
Took 101 and now I'm majoring in AOS which I never expected but totally attribute to Vimont. He does super wonderful things like schedule extra office hours outside of class, and he tries really hard to het to know you, despite this class being so big. If you want to know more about him, you should check out his research with WICCI, which is dope.
Professor Vimont is very nice and accessible but he is also very hard to understand. His homework covers topics never discussed in lecture or in the textbook and even his TAs do not know what he expects or is talking about.
Highly recommend! Professor is amazing. It might be hard if you don't think about putting any efforts. Go to his office hour, it will help A LOT!
Prof. Vimont means really well, but for a large, 100 level class mainly filled with students fulfilling a requirement, this course is much too difficult for non-science majors. Class was very dry and confusing. If you are taking Weather and Climate, take it with Professor Martin who is able to break concepts down with much more clarity and energy.
Prof. Vimont is a great guy with a ton of passion and knowledge about AOS. His lectures are filled with information, so don't plan on skipping class or you'll get very far behind. He's very accessible during office hours, and great to work with one-on-one. He also is really funny and cracks a ton of jokes. Great class even for non-AOS majors.
Vimont seems like a nice guy, but his teaching is really inconsistent and hard to follow. He tries to explain complicated concepts simply, and it's incomprehensible either way. Class is not an easy A, and definitely not for non-science/non-math people. Take this class at your own risk. First grade below an AB I've gotten.
He resembles an older version of Matt Damon, and is crazy nice. He has a dorky sense of humor. He clearly knows a ton about the subject, but truthfully he's too smart to be teaching an intro class. He sometimes brushes over some concepts because he thinks that they are simple. The tests are fair. The homework is deceivingly difficult.
I love Vimont! He's a really cool dude with a passion for AOS. His lectures go a bit fast but he posts all the power points online. There is a textbook but you can get by without it easy. I recommend this class with Vimont :)
He's a funny dude and cracks jokes a ton but sometimes screws up and messes up lecture and problems and forgets what he is trying to explain. I went into this class thinking it was a completely blowoff but it is actually pretty difficult content to understand. He makes lecture interesting but it really is just uninteresting content.
He is a really great teacher. He has a passion about his topic and knows how to explain without being difficult. He understands a college students life, so homework is not overwhelming. He's funny too. The labs in 101 really helped too, super easy labs. I reccomend this, its actually useful.
I really love this class and this man. Tests are difficult for 100 level but this is college and you have to work for your grade. I always go to lecture and read the book. He actually keeps my attention and that is unheard of for me.
He subbed for our AOS 100 class this semester, if you're going to take this class, take it with Prof. Jonathan Martin. 100x better teach. Vimont was nice, and tried to spice up the class with some jokes, but he was hard to follow.
This professor is a good guy and funny, too bad he is a terrible teacher. Although he was interesting the class was very boring and difficult. He does a poor job of teaching the information. I would not suggest this class, it is the only class i have ever gotten below a B in.
Class is pretty difficult for a 100 course, the homework is difficult but not impossible. Pretty straight forward: 2 midterms, 5-6 homeworks, and a final. Great guy though and pretty amusing at times
Vimont is perhaps one of my favorite professors. He has amazing clarity and he is really able to communicate with large class sizes. Also has a great sense of humor. The only people who complain about him are the ones who took this class thinking it would be a total slacker class- it's actually quite difficult. Take it if you want an incredible pro
Don't go into this class thinking it's a blow off...ITS NOT! Homework questions are tough and in my opinion, lecture notes were not enough to get by. Reading the book really clarifies the lecture. You can skip lecture, but the online notes kind of suck. Tests are mostly application questions,so knowing the facts isn't enough, know how to apply them!
This guy is a complete joke. While he isn't necessarily a mean guy, for some reason he thinks he's teaching an upper level class, even though 90% of students are freshman who have no interest in a continued education in Atmospheric and oceanic sciences. DO NOT TAKE.
Boring Boring Boring. He should not be teaching.
Professor Vimont is great!! He makes super corny jokes and doesn't finish a lot of his sentences but he's so adorable you can't help but giggle at him. He really makes an effort to help everyone understand more difficult concepts by repeating them or, my favorite, acting them out. Exams aren't bad..you just have to know your notes.
I thought it was a great class. Some ppl couldn't stand vimont, but i found his lack of ability to communicate hilarious. GO TO OFFICE HOURS for HIS reviews and help with homework; he makes perfect sense in his office. Material is actually sorta tough, but you only need to understand material half way to do well on the exams- they're straightforwar
He's energetic in lecture, but his exams are hard and he seldomly reply your email.
He is a great professor and very fun to be around. His random comments are funny and make lecture go by faster. I found this class to be a lot harder than I thought it would be. Although he is a great prof. I found the material really hard to understand. The exams were tricky and the homework was extremely hard. I heard 101 is a lot better.
Prof Vimont is an awesome guy and is really funny. Reading the text book really helps clarify what he talks about in lecture. Taking the discussion really helps your grade and you get credit for a lab science. Really interesting class; kind of difficult but definitely worth it.
He's a genius meteorologist but is way too smart to be teaching a 100 class. Took it when I heard it was an easy A but it turns out the homework was ridiculously hard, and the exams had pretty random questions. Stopped going to lecture because he goes off on tangents every 5 seconds and started getting better grades on exams by reading the text.
I thought he was a decent teacher...it's difficult to pay attention during lecture though, because half of the time he goes off on tangents. Reading the textbook really helped to figure out exactly what he was talking about.
most UNFAIR teacher i have ever had. worked hard and i can get a B at best.each test was ridiculous. studied a lot, still did poorly. I CANT BELIEVE THIS STUPID CLASS SCREWED MY GPA.dont take this class with this unfair professor unless you want to hurt your gpa. everything about him is unfair, as is his class.
DO NOT GET SCREWED. DO NOT TAKE VIMONT'S CLASS. I just took the final after studying from his review sheet. Almost nothing was the same. Complete waste of time and effort.
Okay, this class should not be hard, but Vimont, as much as I love him, is impossible to understand. He's hilarious and he makes himself laugh a lot(which then makes me laugh) but he doesn't explain weather and climate well. Not an easy A. I'm expecting a C... At least I'm done. Fun class, but really hard.
bottom line- dont get screwed and take this class with vimont like i am. i just studied 6-8 hours understood everything and got a B/C on the last midterm. if you are taking this to fill requirement/easy A-NOT WITH VIMONT.this class is no joke, the homework is also RIDICULOUSLY hard.do not think this is some easy class to help GPA-it only hurts
Don't listen to the previous comments. First off, if you have the choice take ATM 101 and not 100 because the discussion is 25% of your entire grade and all you have to do is attend discussion and your discussion grade will be 100%. It also really prepares you for the tests. The homework and review sheets really help you. This class is an EASY AB
He is funny. I really enjoyed going to leacture. He is very helpful with questions and very personable. I would definatly reccomend him!
He was a great teacher. I dont think he teaches anymore.
he's really funny even though he doesnt always try to be. he has the best stories ever
great class, he made it very interesting, was very clear and made going to lecture fun. It wasn't too easy, but if you do the work and study its not hard to get a good grade. Its also very interesting, definentely suggest taking it. Anyone who says he's bad is just stupid.
Exams were very easy. Homework was very but helpful. Not too much work. Very intersting. Vimont made fun of me once...but i still think hes a real tite guy.
Not a difficult class at all. Professor was enthusiastic and entertaining. Homework was hard and/or busy work, but curved in the end. Review sheets for exams pretty much tell you what is on it. If you need 4 cr of physical science, this is a good way to do it.
Vimont is the man! He's a great professor I don't know what these kids are talking about. Going to lecture definitely helps you understand material better and if you go to his office hours he is VERY helpful. The homework's hard, but if you work through it, it does prepare you for the tests. Youll do fine if you do the work and show some effort.
I was very interested in Weather and Climate until I took this class...I have learned some things, but my grade won't reflect that since the test questions are confusing, and the "review sheets" he makes do not prepare you for the tests! The homeworks are really bad and unfairly graded. I liked the fog/cloud example when he made a cloud in class.
awful!!!!!! He is one of the worst teachers i have ever had
I think this is a great class. I'm not a "science" person, but understand the material just fine. And if you go to office hours if you ahve a question on the homework he is REALLY helpful! Exams aren't too bad either, and took less than 20 min. His jokes aren't the best, but at least they keep you entertained.
