Online canvas modules with weekly podcasts and a synchronous discussion. Lots of reading and weekly discussion posts. The homework is at times overwhelming with the essays. Sometimes it felt like he was more focused on themes of gender roles than the actual events of the WW1, but I did learn a lot about the societal background of the time.

History 350 is an online course with Usisshkin and was great overall. There is a lot of assignments and discussions because it is an online course so you have to stay on top of your work. The tests and papers have very clear grading and it's not hard to get an A if you try. He doesn't make WWI boring and is a great overall online class!

I would absolutely take this class again, but it was not my favorite. Ussishkin isn't the best lecturer, but he's very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject and his students. I would say if you don't enjoy history to some extent, this class isn't for you. The class was basically pass/fail, so if you put effort in, you will get an A.

Professor Ussishkin was great. In a small seminar environment, he did a really good job of facilitating a super engaging discussion and you could tell he really cares about what he teaches. He's definitely not the clearest professor when it comes to putting stuff on canvas, but he's a super easy grader so if you put the effort in, you'll get an A.

Ive taken 2 classes with Daniel and loved them both. His lectures are funny and engaging, and I never found the tests to be very difficult. The only downside to his classes is the amount of reading, though I managed to get an AB in both without doing most of them . I loved both classes so much that I will be taking another class this summer.

Absolutely loved this class and have only good things to say about Professor Ussishkin - accessible, caring, and passionate about whatever he discussed. Surprisingly loved the cultural approach rather than solely a military focus. Make sure to keep up on online lectures and readings, but if you have any interest in WWI, the class will be enjoyable!

Great professor with a great attitude. Knows what he is talking about and very enthusiastic.

Great professor who is very passionate and informed on his course subject.

Professor Ussishkin was mediocre in my mind. There were some lectures that were very intriguing and made the time fly by, but there were others that simply dragged. He was very knowledgeable of the material, however he often went on tangents. You are sort of expected to know some things coming in to the class that I didn't so this took extra time.

loved every minute of it!

Professor Ussishkin has a minor accent that at first I didn't think I would be able to adjust to, but I stuck with his class and I am so grateful I did. He really is an inspirational teacher that cares about his students and tries his best to make the content (in this case British History) interesting to even those that aren't always fully engaged.

You had a whole week to do not that much reading (not that I'm complaining) and the essays were fair and fun to write if you thought of a good argument. Professor Ussishkin was always willing to talk to me outside of class as well. It's a great class, I learned a ton about British history that I never knew before.

There are lots of assigned readings each week, and while they are helpful for writing papers they are not necessary to do well in the class. If you show up to class regularly and go to discussion you will be fine. Things are always a bit out of order but easy enough to understand. Ussishkin is a great professor and is passionate about the subject.

Great class, learned a lot, fairly interesting and engaging lectures.

I took History 680 with Prof. U. He was the advisor to all the students writing a thesis and did an amazing job. Despite the huge range of projects, almost all of which had nothing to do with his research area, he always provided feedback and constructive criticism that made everyone's project better.

Professor Ussishkin loves his students. He is clearly passionate about the topic and loves to teach, so he is easy to follow along with in lecture and fascinating to listen to. His exams are fair and clear cut he grades the way professors SHOULD grade--not teaching to a test but if you know and learn the material. GREAT CLASS. Favorite professor

If you show up, pay attention, and take good notes, you'll have no trouble with this class. Notes are important because the posted ppt slides are sparse. Papers and tests seemed fair. It's a good idea to do the online readings or at least have a grasp on their significance, but you could probably get away without the textbook.

Professor Ussishkin cares about what he teaches and tries his best to get you interested in the subject. The books we read were long but interesting and given ample time to finish! Classes were fun through good slides and cool movies! Definitely take his classes!!

Professor Ussishkin is a great professor and any student should take his course as he will make history fun and enjoyable.

Great.

One of the best professors I have had so far! He is very clear in his lectures and really interacts with students. I felt like I learned a lot, and the papersexams were not too bad. If you pay attention in class then the assignments are a lot easier. Would take a class with him again!

History 124 was awesome. I was very fortunate to have not only a great professor but great TA as well. Professor Ussishkin is an awesome guy and incredibly, incredibly knowledgable. He's ready mannnnny books and it was awesome to develop my own interpretation of British history with his teaching.

As long as you show up to class, pay attention, do the reading and participate in discussion you should do well. The professor was always willing to clarify anything. The lectures require attention because the lecture slides are minimal. The professor however is funny and tries to make the subject matter as entertaining as possible.

Great teacher. Really interesting lectures and good sense of humor. Fair grading, if you show up, participate and put effort into the class you can easily get an A. Would take any course taught by him.

I enjoyed the material because of the professor. He gave detailed lectures and always referred to the slides. Although the material sometimes got dry, Professor Ussishkin tried his best to make it interesting. He's a nice person overall.

He is a great professor and I learned a lot. He is always available to give feedback and really wants to get to know his students. The course isn't an easy A but if you put in a little effort you will do fairly well. The material is not conceptually hard and there aren't any exams just papers. Also no textbook just a course reader and a few books.

Professor Ussishkin is an amazing professor. He is helpful, friendly, and extremely supportive. If you have an opportunity to take a class with him, do it. He was not my senior thesis adviser, but I could not have gotten it done without him.

Great teacher, passionate about helping students learn history!

Probably one of my favorite professors. He was very clear in his standards, did not expect too much from the students, and had great lectures. He keeps the readings pretty small and doesn't make the student buy unnecessary textbooks. Ussiskin was always open to student questions (even in the middle of lecture) and willing to explore new ideas.

Dr. Ussishkin is such a splendid and knowledgeable professor. Always willing to help and encourage you. I've written two seminar papers under his very helpful guidance. His optimism and sense of humor really marks my day. Highly recommended if you're interested in modern British history and British Empire.

Professor Ussishkin was great! He presented the material very well and was clear on what you needed to know. He posts his lecture slides, but there isn't much information on them so you need to go to class to get a decent grade. Discussion sections are boring, but helpful for learning the material. Two papers and two blue book exams.

Professor Ussishkin is a great teacher his power point slides don't show a lot of information so you need to go to class to do well. The discussions were boring, but helped in understanding the material. Two papers and two exams both blue books.

I really enjoyed this class and the professor. Expectations were straight forward and the class was interesting and engaging.

No professor I've had before wanted to help students more than Daniel. Was always willing to set up office hours on your schedule, and would always show up. Wish there was a 3.5 option for clarity, as his powerpoints themselves have little info, but he never misses discussing the bulletpoints he presents. Awesome guy, and not too hard of a class.

Overall a spectacular class. At times it got a little dry, but this is to be expected when discussing 17th century British politics. Professor Ussishkin did a great job of mixing in jokes and movie clips to keep us focused. Great professor, great course, would recommend to anyone interested in the subject.

This class was relatively easy and I did not put that much work into the class. There was one midterm and final both of which were pretty easy. There were two papers - one 4 page and one 5 page which were graded very fairly. Overall, I liked the class and thought that it wasn't all that challenging.

He was very friendly and knowledgable about course material. Lectures were long at times but they are mandatory and important for the exam and papers. The papers ask for you to draw your own conclusions and analyze readings. Going to his office hours and participating in class are really helpful if you are struggling.

Lectures can be long and he covers a lot during that time. He Is really open to student ideas and letting them draw their own conclusions from the material. Focuses on making students think critically about history without imposing any specific approach to it. Can be a tough grader but rewards effort and participation.

The professor was very knowledgable about the subject and had answers to every question. Often though, it was hard to follow his power points and take effective notes. Textbook wasn't needed.

Very good professor overall. He knew a lot about the subject and was passionate about drawing connections between different events. But you have to pay attention in lectures. His powerpoints are very barebone, so you have to listen to him talk very quickly in a rather thick accent. But overall very good professor.

Really interesting class. He gets off topic, but you will become a better notetaker. If you like being spoon fed information, this class isn't for you. requires thought. TA Jen was super fun and smart.

Has odd accent and can lose train of thought really easilly. Still cool guy though, easy class.

Dan is a really nice dude, and he can be pretty funny too. Yes, he can ramble at times but unless you're a 5 year old with no attention span (*reviewers below me*) you should be fine. This is college after all. Two papers, a midterm, and a final, all of which are pretty easy and don't require too much time. Good class to take for Humanities credit.

I don't know what changed since last Spring but this class is nothing what I heard it to be. He rambles during his lecture and provides no reference for confusion. No one understands any of the main points and he does't put up any notes during class. Not for those with poor attention spans

This was an alright class. No mid-term or final but there are 4 papers and a group project. The group project was due the week after Thanksgiving, which was inconvenient. All of the books we read were kind of dull. Lots of in lecture discussions. He lectures more on the social and political aspects surrounding the war than the war itself.

Lectures can get long and grading is determined by TAs, discussion grade weight can be increased if you actively participate so get to know your TA well! Textbook is completely unnecessary and other reading content just helps to gain an understanding but is by no means required to do well.

Awesome professor! Funny comments and easy to understand! Breaks British history up into understandable chunks! I don't normally like history, and did fine in his class! TAKE IT!

Great professor, his accent is easy to understand and he's very nice and easy going. Lectures can get long but overall a great professor and a great class.

Had him for my senior seminar. Class was interesting, and he's good at giving feedback and helping with the final essay, but he is very difficult to understand sometimes -- very thick accent. Overall a decent class, and he definitely knows his stuff. Great guy, too!

Great professor. I didnt read any of the 8 required books and I got an A in the class. Very helpful, and tests are extremely broad and easy. It it pretty difficult to do poor in this class

Ussishkin is a pretty good professor. The work and tests are straight-forward. Memorize the facts and you will get an A. His lectures can be unorganized at times, and his power points are kinda useless. Half of the novels for the class are good reads. Reading isn't really needed.

Greatly enjoyed this class. However, i would say if you don't enjoy history you might find it boring. Yet, the lectures were organized well with powerpoints thru use of lots of media (music/movies). If you go to lecture and take notes, it's not a difficult class. Professor has an accent but isn't a liability, and he is passionate about his topics.

He's a good guy, but it's a shame for students who pay so much money for education these days, then end up with a professor that speaks broken English. I spent most of my time in lecture just trying to understand what he's saying... Advice: take class with another professor.

Great class - one of the best I've taken at UW; truly a kind professor. Used a lot of different media in class (youtube, film, etc.) which was nice and mixed things up a bit. Cracked jokes during lecture and made classes fun and interesting. I'd definitely recommend any class taught by Ussishkin!

Very interesting class. You have to read four books throughout the semester, write two papers and his lectures go hand in hand with the text book (if you choose to read it). Hes a great lecturer and a pretty funny guy. I would definitively recommend taking this class.
