Dan is the best professor I met ever! In entomology, he was able to expertly answer every tricky question asked by students. Dan is so professional to identify every insects of my collection in few seconds. During the lectures, Dan helped students understand obscure and difficult points in a fun and clear way while ensuring professionalism.

Dan Young is the best professor I have ever had at UW, I cant put it into words how much I love and appreciate this man and the wonder he instills in me over insects. He has inspired me to major in entomology and I found the collection to be the most fun part of the course. Lab exams can be a pain sometimes but the field work is very fun 11/10

Super fun and engaging professor!

Incredibly dense course with lots of exams but Dan makes it genuinely interesting to learn. Extremely chill professor who will joke around a lot. Get ahead on the collection early, trust me.

One of the best if not the best professor I've ever met. His teaching style is quite laid back but does well to simplify concepts and create analogies that allows easier understanding and stimulate interest. He is very chill and one of the most engaging too, his star trek referrences and other jokes throughout lectures and labs are really fun.

Dan is genuinely the best professor I have ever had! I was a student of his in four different courses that he taught and loved every single one. He is one of the most caring and passionate professor I had throughout college. Dan left such a big impact on me and really made me enjoy learning again. I genuinely cant thank him enough for all his help.

I would absolutely take his class again. He is so passionate about what he is teaching and makes a large effort to engage his students in his content. He is a great person and also quite funny.

This class is super interesting, but get ready to dedicate your whole life to it. Dan goes through material very quickly and there was so much taxonomy to cover. Outside of having class, the collections project took up every weekend. He's very charismatic and tries to use analogies to make concepts make sense, but it can end up being more confusing

Dan is an amazing professor. Took the FIG and his was easily my favorite class this semester. Cares about each of his students, jokes around, and you can tell he's really passionate about these things. The readings were kind of a lot but he's a forgiving grader. Will be taking 302 so I can have him again.

Good Teacher. His quizzes are tough but his exams are good. Do well on exams study for quizzes and do well on the project and you'll be fine.

This class makes me wish I could take more entom. classes, especially with Dan as the prof! This class left me with a new way of viewing nature & insects. Very demanding class though. As soon as you get your kill jar, force yourself to go collecting at least every weekend, and get classmates' contact info to trade with. Make Quizlets to study!

This class was very stressful at times (7 total exams + insect collection) but it was one of the most rewarding classes I've taken. Dan can come off as somewhat strict, but he's actually very forgiving (gave extra credit when an exam score was low). His lectures made me wanna read about insects in my free time! I have no complaints about Dan

This discussion class is fairly simple. Take notes of required weekly readings and send discussion questions back to him via email for the next class. With several weeks left, readings end and biodiversity hotspot presentations and essays are assigned. Roughly follow the rubric and put in some effort for an A, which most people get.

He and I had a roller coaster of a semester but roller coasters are exciting. The material was SO interesting and he knows his stuff. He is a really wonderful STEM professor who knows who you are and really is on your side. Entomology is one of my favorite classes here and I recommend it. IT IS TOUGH.. but Dan gives you the resources to succeed.

Professor Young is one of the best professors that I've had in my college career. He is caring, hilarious, and very passionate about what he teaches and researches. He is an incredible man and I would definitely take a course with him again.

An awesome guy but the bug project was a lot of work. Took 20+ hours. There were 7 exams in total between what he basically assumed was a separate lab and lecture though they are 4 credits together. Would not recommend this class for someone who was just interested in insects and isn't dedicated to a future to them.

This class is so much fun. The project was great and it helped boost my great. I never knew how important insects were before taking his class.

Best 300 class I have ever taken.

His lab was the easiedt lab that I have ever taken. The bug project was fun.

This is an amazing class to get a head start on insects. You really understand their why they all matter and how they are related. He also tells us that insects have feelings too.

He is an awesome professor his love insects makes him so happy to help his students.

He is my favorite professor ever. He gave the best lectures along with the best labs I had ever taken. I loved his exams.

He taught the class in a way students could understand it and he had some of the best tests than most bio teachers here.

I loved his labs and project his test were well written with good answers you can remember from class.

Start on bug collection early (note time and place as well). Great professor but both lecture and lab exams every few weeks.

Dr. Young was one of my favorite professors I've ever had (I'm a fourth year), however this class was also one of the hardest I've taken at Madison. Make sure you go to EVERY lecture. Even though he provides online notes which are very helpful, it is important to go because he goes over much more in class. Also study for lab exams!

This is by far the most rewarding class that I've ever taken at UW-Madison. If you are at all interested in insects, I cannot recommend it enough. Dr. Young's enthusiasm for the subject is contagious and he does a great job of explaining the material. As long as you are willing to put in the work, Entomology 302 isn't too difficult.

One of the most inspiring classes I've taken. He sends out all his lectures but goes through them pretty fast. It's best to print them all out beforehand. I found it hard to get a hold of him outside of class, even though he says he's always in his office. He and the course has definitely changed my outlook on insects.

I LOVE DAN!!!! The best professor I've had at UW-Madison. He's compelling and funny and very into what he's teaching. He tells you everything you need to know for the exams you just have to listen.

Professor is good but this is the Worst course project and course design I've ever had as a senior....

VERY nice professor. LOVED him...The class is not extraordinarily hard, but very time-consuming and you need to do a lot of memorization. Take it if you are super interested in bugs!

Probably the best professor i have ever had at UW. Extremely enthusiastic and loves the subject. Really made me excited and made the class very enjoyable. I would highly recommend that everyone take this class if they can.

Overall, Dr. Young was the most enthusiastic professor I have seen on this campus! I would recommend taking this course in Fall and START COLLECTING BUGS EARLY (the second you register for this class). Kill bugs in 70% Ethanol. Flashcards work great for studying. Schedule extra time in the lab weekly for reviewing material and you should be fine!

Class is way more difficult than anticipated. I also do not see what is so great about this guy. I thought this class was very dry, as bugs would be. Unless you have a burning desire to learn about bugs, don't take it. Worst decision i've made at the uw.

Dr. Young is the best professor I have ever taken. He is smart, funny, and best of all, makes you want to learn and appreciate insects that surround us everyday. The course is DEMANDING so dont procrastinate. He has no sympathy for students who do bad in the course or those who dont finish their projects on time!

Hands down the best professor I've ever had! He's funny and insightful. I was so worried about the class but once in it, it was a blast! Get to know him on a personal level and you will ace. There is a lot of time required for the insect collection, so start RIGHT AWAY. Go to ALL his reviews and for the lab exams, spend a lot of time in the lab.

Best professor ever. This class inexplicably made me want to spend my weekends memorizing the latin names of beetle families. Now, I notice bugs wherever I go. It's kind of a neat party trick to identify the bug in the room, and has come in surprisingly useful at my job, in other classes, and in my personal life.

DAN YOUNG IS the best prof on campus. seriously...take any class he offers. most passionate man on campus

He was interesting, helpful, fair, and challenging. Ties with a couple others for best professor I've had at UW-Madison.

One of the best classes that I have taken. It was work, but Dan made it fun and interesting. Lectures were always entertaining and tests were fair

Professor Young is the best! I was terrified of bugs but with a lot of flashcards and his awesome lectures, I was able to easily get an A and now know SO MUCH about insects. Get to know the material AND the professor--both very interesting! And don't procrastinate on your collection of 75 different specimens...it's no joke. Highly recommended!!!

Great professor and made the course material interesting even though at first glance it may not seem to be so. The class is 4 credits, but should probably be bumped up to 5 due to the amount of time spent in the lab. Tests were fair. Insect collection requires a lot of time. Take class in the fall and start collecting in the summer!

Dan Young will make you love bugs if you have hated them your entire life. It is a lot of work but his reviews are helpful and he basically tells you question by question what will be on the exam, you just need to study that material. Flashcards were helpful, especially the ones you can make online because there's a lot. Overall, loved him!

Dr. Young is awesome! Very funny, and tells great anecdotes to help you learn the information. NOT an easy class though-there are a ton of terms to memorize. Flash cards are necessary, and it's a lot of work. If you have any interest in insects, you'll learn tons of fascinating stuff! I took this class for fun, and wasn't disappointed.

I love Prof Young. He's knowledgeable, helpful, and will do whatever he can to help you understand the material. He also clearly loves insects and his enthusiasm is contagious.

Prof Young knocked my socks off!

absolutely fantastic. never thought I would be so interested in insects. Totally due to dr. young.

You NEED to take this class if it counts toward your major. It's very dense with material, but is extremely easy to remember if you attend lecture because Professor Young explains everything in a humorous, totally relatable way. He is, for lack of a better word, AMAZING. Going in I was apathetic toward insects; coming out I was enthusiastic.

This guy could make dirt interesting. Now that aside, the class is very information heavy, lots of memorizing and lab time. Plus a big bug collection, but go on the field trips and trade with others and its not a problem. Don't let all that scare you, this class was one of the best classes I've taken on campus, and mainly because of Prof Young.

Professor Young is amazing. You will serious not regret one second taking this class. Much, much better than all the other zoology classes I've taken - he reminded me why I'm passionate about animals.

Professor Young is one of those professors with a distinct passion for what they do. He is engaging, funny, and becuase he runs lecture, lab and feild trips, you get plenty of interaction with him. Class material does invovle alot of memorization, and his lab and lecture books are a little jumbled, but Young was a great professor and made up for it

AMAZING PROFESSOR. If only all professors had his exact teaching style. The man is HILARIOUS, repeats things so many times studying is not too big of a hassle (as long as you pay attention), runs all lectures, labs, and field trips and wears sweatpants and a bug shirt every day. I hated bugs but he made them interesting.

i feel the need to share a quote, just to demonstrate his sense of humor: we were talking about scorpionflies in lecture, which have a copulatory organ on one end which makes them look like, obiously, scorpions. Dan told us that if you catch one they'll whip it around at you like they sting, but don't worry, they can only **** you a little bit.

This class is hard. It's really hard. There's lots of memorization, frequent tests, and the collection will take quite a bit of work. But that DOESN'T MATTER because prof Young is AMAZING. This class was what I dreamed college would be like. Lectures are fascinating, you learn a ton. Absolutely the best class I've taken. Take it!

Best professor i have had at UW. Extremely helpful, will answer any question clearly. Very funny and personable also. Makes the material extremely interesting. He really wants you to do well in the class. If you take his class you wont be disappointed, but DO NOT procrastinate on the collection!

If you're considering taking this class, take it with Dr. Young. His lectures are entertaining and bawdy, he has an incredible passion for the material, and he obviously loves teaching. Lots of memorization and insect collecting is required, but it's worth it for the man.

BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD! he teaches in such a way that you just can't help but learn the stuff really well. it makes studying so much easier! he makes bugs really interesting, which is a really hard thing to do. take this class!

I could not imagine a better professor! This guy is hilarious. If you need a zoology class or plan on becoming an Ent major take his intro course (ent 302). You will not be disappointed! He has a weekly "entomological moment in middle-earth" up on the lab board...if that gives you any clue what kind of guy you'd be dealing with.

He is THE best professor that I have had/ probably ever will have. Lectures are entertaining and he is just a cool guy overall. If all my professors were like him going to classes would be so much easier.

Who knew that lectures about bugs could be so entertaining? Not only is this man hilarious, but he knows pretty much everything about insects. The best part of the class: no TAs, he does the lectures, labs, and field trips all himself. Very quick to grade and return things too. He acts very casual and is always reasonable. Highly recomended.

Loved Him!! Expected to hate the class. Put off taking this required class because I hated bugs. Now I collect them and would have changed majors if I'd had the time. He's THAT good.

He's fantastic!
