Dr. Norman was an amazing teacher who clearly is super passionate about what she teaches, which makes going through the content a little easier. This class does require a lot of reading that needs time to be broken down. super interesting content when she explains in class, but lots of material to read through and understand before each lecture.
Optional Lectures doesn't say much. Really depends on the TA they do the most for grading and teaching. Discussion is very mandatory and helpful. All papers, offer extra credit and participation. Too much reading for any entry level class.
So engaging and clearly loves what she teaches! Every discussion was very valuable and the lectures were meaningful and well planned. She always arrived prepared. Although there is a significant amount of reading, the books/articles chosen are rich and thoughtful.
Dr. Norman is a very knowledgeable professor. Her lectures were informative-heavy but very interesting and attention grabbing.
This chick is literally insane. I told her I was seeking accommodations and she really told me "you won't need them". Lie. All you do is sit through the class while she either picks apart your writing for how she likes, or she will yap THE ENTIRE TIME and have maybe 2 people share what they wrote. Just don't take a class with her. Thank me later.
I really enjoyed her class. It has certainly opened up my view on how religion and health interact. I wasn't expecting an easy A, but I found the work load to be enormous. The questions and feedback on assignments were very vague/confusing. The depth that she would like the assignments to be done with makes the work feel 100xs heavier.
I thought Dr. Norman was a sweet lady and enjoyed going to lecture. However, my Grandmother died and she say no to an essay extension so. I have a tainted view of her now. I loved my TA though, Abby was the best--I would say my best TA so far at UW. She will be a TA next semester for RG 102!
I took this for an "easy" humanities credit and hated it. There's so much reading for an introductory class, and they're all abstract and vague. It was so hard to get a grasp on what you were learning. Lectures were so boring and always went over time. The TA was a harsh grader and NOT good at explaining concepts. Don't take if you don't have to.
Overall this class assigns way too much reading for a level 100 class and one of her TAs is an extremely hard grader and does not welcome ideas during discussions. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TOO.
Dr Norman was a very boring lecturer, it's very difficult to want to go to her lectures and be fully attentive. She assigns way too much reading for an entry-level, three-credit class. There were only 3 required essays that weren't too bad but grading was pretty harsh in my opinion. If this class isn't a requirement for your major don't take it.
She was not a very captivating lecturer and kept us late most classes. Overall not awful, but would not take again.
Professor Norman was great, we learned interesting and UNBIASED information, and it was truly a pleasure. She was very accommodating during the pandemic, and I would recommend this class to anyone! Be warned though, lectures can feel and be very long, so be prepared for long lectures.
It was truly a privilege to learn from Professor Norman. She is an amazing professor and person and knows so much about religious studies. She inspired me to want to try my hardest in her class and put as much effort in as I could. I miss this class every day and wish I could take it again.
Grades are pretty much only determined by exams. Dr. Norman assigns a LOT of reading, so you definitely need some good time management skills. You can tell that she's passionate about religious studies when you watch her lectures. This was the class that I did the most work for, but I also learned the most from it.
During my time in her class, I've never really interacted with her since her lectures were prerecorded. Her TA was really nice though. Grading wasn't harsh but expect a TON of reading.
For an intro-level class, there was SO MUCH reading. Get ready to read an amount similar to a 5 credit class, even though the course is 3 credits. Online quizzes are worded EXACTLY like lectures, so they're pretty easy. She is very very particular for how you write the essays, though. There was a sign in for each lecture, but missing 2-3 was okay.
I took RS102 and there were typically two 50 page readings a week, sometimes there were more or were longer. Dr. Norman herself is incredibly sweet and smart, her lectures are very dull and heavily opinionated. Your only grades are 3 essays and a few quizzes from lecture material, so it isn't too hard to pass as long as you know the theories
An ABSURD amount of work outside of class for 100 level intro class. About 50 pages to read for every lecture (twice a week), sometimes more, usually not less. Multiple 4 page essays. She speaks in extremely opinionated terms. This is not like a normal religion class- there is black/white right and wrong- opinion is not welcome or discussed.
I thought I would like the class, but it was just very boring. There were a TON of readings that often times were pretty challenging to understand. Luckily, she provides plenty of opportunities for extra credit. The more readings you do, the better your paper will be. Lectures were mandatory which was not pleasant because lectures were dry.
You are supposed to sign into lecture but I just had someone else sign me in and I didn't go. You can take the reading quizzes in a group so you could not read the material and still get a 10/10. Not a tough grader at all, I got A's on all of my papers. There is a lot of reading but you only need it for the papers so I only read what I needed to.
You are required to attend lectures- you have to sign in. A lot of the time it is unclear what she is saying in lecture but somehow it all comes together. Be ready to read A LOT the quizzes are easy but you it all really comes down to your papers that you write since there aren't any midterm tests
Dr. Norman is very passionate and the class is very cool if you're interested in health. If you are a slow reader it is a hard class. It is very heavy on reading, reading that is dense and arbitrary. Be warned if you don't like reading and writing, but definitely do-able and interesting.
I loved Dr. Norman's class. It's clear that she is interested in the success of her students. The class was graded mostly on essays that reflected readings/material covered in class. There was a TON of reading for this class, however, and while a lot of it was interesting, the readings took up much of my time for homework before every lecture.
Professor Norman is an amazing Lecturer and I very much appreciated listening to the lectures. There isn't a textbook that is required to purchase but instead she uses PDF online which she expects to be printed out. You can get a way without reading for class but it will come back to bite you when its time to write the papers.
She lectures a lot but all of her Powerpoints are online the day after at the latest as well as a video of the lectures, but attendance is mandatory. Go in for office hours for your essays because usually repeat visits will increase your grade if your TA cares about improvement. The quizzes are easy but the feedback on the essays is not enough
Her lectures can be boring and confusing. There's no exams but there are online quizzes(easy), and 3 essays in total. There is a LOT of reading in this class, readings are expected to be done for every lecture and section (if you don't read you wont pass). She offers extra credit opportunities although there is a limit to how much can be earned.
She is super cool and a great lecturer. However sometimes her lectures get super confusing and she goes off on crazy tangents and is honestly talking about nothing. Class has a TON of reading, like 30 pages a night. The quizzes are super easy though and there aren't any tests - just 3 essays!
I took RS 102 with Dr. Norman (used to be RS 101) and I really like her. The class has A TON of readings (read about 200 pages in the first 2 weeks and then about an average of 20 pages for every lecture) but she is a great professor. She is interested in her students' success, very approachable, and easily accessible. One of my favorites yet.
Professor Norman is a good professor. She knows the material what she is teaching. However be aware that she teaches from only one perspective. In Pauline lit she only teaches from the new Pauline perspective and then is distasteful to many of the traditional perspectives on Paul
I loved her!! She makes the lectures interesting and it's obvious that she really knows what she is talking about. There are A LOT of readings for the class but they are very relevent to the material covered. The only grades for the class come from papers and short quizzes.
Dr. Norman is a wealth of knowledge. She loves what she does which makes going to class a joy. The RS 101 was a bit heavy on the reading but they were always purpose driven. I took the course for honors credit and had her as my TA and got to know her really well. She was always willing to help out on assignments and encouraged you to do well.
I wouldn't recommend this class unless somebody is really interested in religious studies. The readings were long, dense and not that interesting and lectures seemed to drag on and wouldn't get much out of them.
Don't take religious studies with her unless you're really interested!! This class was not what I expected. Its based on applying theories to explain religions more than learning about the religion. It was so much work for a 100 level class and especially for an elective. I had to spend more time reading for this class than for my important classes
Dr. Norman is an amazing professor. She offers a lot of help to her students. She is so nice and makes the class fun. Lectures are mandatory, but there are no exams, only short papers and quizzes. I would definitely take another class with her!
Dr. Norman is the best professor I've had. Lectures are interesting and engaging. The reading material can be a lot at times but is always relevant and helps you to get to know the lecture material better. Very fun professor. Would take again!
Very cute southern accent, but you'll have to print out a ton of books and read a lot every night!
She's a great teacher, but assignments between tests are tedious. The class was fairly easy, but if you're used to just memorizing to get an A, this class is not like that. It's also very interesting if you have Christian beliefs. I would recommend for a literature credit.
She is a pretty good professor and likes those that talk with her a lot. That being said she likes to talk a lot, and has a particular personality that some may find irritating. She also loves to give lengthy readings. Lots of them. Most assignments she gives, she doesn't check in, but discussion participation is crucial. Don't upset her.
Not what I was expecting for the class but I still thought it was very interesting. It was a lot of work and reading for a 100 level class I think but not the worst I've ever had. Dr. Norman was very enthusiastic and her lectures helped me understand the articles more so I think she did a wonderful job!
She is the worst professor I've ever had. She assigns way too much work and it is impossible to finish it all. She has an annoying personality and she is not clear at all. She makes lectures that are way too long and then will make you finish reading them on your own. I advise everyone to steer clear of her and any of her classes. She is HORRID.
Dr. Norman is the best professor I've had so far at Madison. She is very clear about information and cares a lot about how much her students know. Very organized and helpful. She makes a lot of funny and corny jokes. I highly recommend her!
Assigns way too many readings and assignments it is barely possible to get them done. She expects you to do three assignments a week and turn one in at discussion which isn't even graded. Horrible class.
Dr. Norman's explanations are always very thorough and clear. She does have issues with clarity sometimes, especially with her PowerPoint slides, which she sometimes expects you to read on your own, but are not developed well enough to be understood without explanation. Also, her exams are impossible.
Pauline Christianity is not a "give-me" course, which is why I took it:( However Dr. Norman wants her class to succeed and she is willing to help! She teaches you in-depth information about the new testament, but you probably want some background knowledge, seriously! Tests are impossible, KNOW YOUR STUFF! Sweetest woman ever though!
Exciting lecturer, interesting material. Textbook was very clear. If you have no prior knowledge of the material (New Testament) or interest in religion, this class may be very difficult.
