At first, she seemed likable and knowledgeable and I expected to enjoy her class. However, she often comes across as sassy and snotty. If you don't clearly express her exact opinion in assignments from lectures/discussions, your grade may suffer. Her assignment feedback feels sarcastic and snooty rather than constructive, which can be frustrating.
Taylor is very knowledgeable and passionate about her subjects, and I found her seminar engaging and informative. Her scholarship is commendable and leaves no room for doubt. However, there were instances where her behavior came across as petty, condescending, and cynical, which I found unacceptable for a professor.
Professor Taylor is an engaging and knowledgeable lecturer. While she is firm in her class expectations, the content of the class was interesting and thorough. The grading system is fair, you just need to pay attention and submit your work on time.
She can be a bit abrasive at times, but she's a great lecturer. They were all organized nicely and easy to follow. The grading criteria is a bit complicated, but you essentially get to pick your grade based on the amount of work you choose do. Attendance policy is more than fair, and she allows a few make-ups at the end of the semester as well.
She is an amazing professor who has engaging lectures. However, people do find her a bit rude with her expectations, however, if you listen to what she says and follow her grading scale you will do fine. Additionally, she was funny and chose interesting readings to read inside and outside of class. Overall would take again!
She gets a tough rep because she's harsh. Her expectations are clear and her lectures are entertaining (she's funny). If you show up and you're a good student, you will be just fine. She isn't flexible about deadlines and won't give extensions (even if you've got an emergency). As long as you come to class prepared and do your work, you'll be ok.
She is very knowledgeable but is completely rude. She is someone who looks down on her students and will tell you off. I know of multiple of my peers who emailed her and did not get a response back. If you plan on missing class think again. Do not take a class with her if you don't have to.
She's a very intelligent person in her field. She's also very nice and funny. However, she is a very tough grader and will take points off if you don't regurgitate her exact opinion/what she talked about in class. Do not even try submitting things late or you'll flunk. Attendance was mandatory and you must be involved in the discussion.
Was demeaning to students and what grade you would get was based on a complicated flow chart. She was clearly knowledgeable but it hard to get through lectures purely based on how she talked to students.
Mandatory Attendance in lecture (1 in class activity per class). A few quizzes that are based on lectures and weekly readings (easy). A few papers that get progressively more difficult but are not bad. Some lectures are very boring and some are extremely interesting it depends on interests. Lectures are nothing special just typical college course.
she's clearly an intelligent professor, but is condescending and spiteful towards students. emailed her multiple times when I was violently ill for a week and never got a single response back. She expects you to already know so much information or just look it up yourself. I didn't enjoy this class and felt I had no guidance on the final essay.
I would avoid this professor at all costs. I graduated, but still view this my only negative experience at UW. Class is easy but dry. However, the issue resides in the fact that she is spiteful and takes it out on students. Don't miss a class even for medical. She patrolled us when while writing her evaluations saying she needed to collect herself
Had very well thought out and engaging lectures, unfortunately was incredibly rude and inconsiderate which should be step one for any pedagog. This class left a very sour taste in my mouth due to the gaping disconnect between Professor Taylor and her students' needs.
Professor Taylor's class is extremely easy but you have to show up to lectures. She is passionate about the subject and chooses to tell you about what's going on instead of throwing it on slides. She kind of has an attitude sometimes but means well and is a decent professor.
She has a bit of a chip on her shoulder. She also swears in class not infrequently - which I usually don't have a problem with if it's meant as a joke but she sounds unprofessional. Her lectures are excruciating, and she's sometimes unclear what of the material is important to know. If you are in love with the subject, take the class, otherwise not
Professor Taylor is awesome. One of my favorite professors I've had at UW. Had her for her 201 and 303 and loved both classes.
Taking the class for Comm-B, thinking Athenian Democracy sounds cool, but she expects you to know a lot or look it up yourself. She pulls in ancient sources, but isn't good at explaining who they are, what they are talking about, or even which century it is! My TA is awesome at actually helping. Prof is smart but condescending. She's not teaching.
I have had Professor Taylor for two different classes and specifically chose her class the second time because I liked her teaching style so much. Every lecture she hands out a sheet that outlines that lecture. She is clear and concise and you actually learn in her class. Fair grader. Funny. Awesome British accent :)
Prof. Taylor is a super engaging, interesting, and fair professor. She lectures in a pretty old-school way, but she's a fantastic lecturer and really makes Greek history digestible. Keep in mind that she takes zero crap, and attending lecture is an absolute must. Class lacks tests and she's a super reasonable grader.
Great lecturer. The major reason people don't like her is that she lectures the old school way without slides or much writing on the board. Unfortunately, that's just a matter of the students not being used to it. I'd definitely take a class with her again if I hadn't fulfilled all my liberal arts electives.
Claire Taylor is definitely the best lecturer I have had at UW in my four years. She is very clear in her lectures, and you can tell how passionate she is about Greek history, more specifically Athenian history. One paper at the end of the course with the option of 10 points extra credit and two online exams. I recommend this course to everyone!
This was one of my favorite classes! The communication B aspect was not hard if you attended class and read the seminar readings. Even though the material could have been really boring, she made it very interesting! I also learned a lot! Take it with her if you get the chance.
Lectures are helpful but you could get a B without attending. If you want a higher grade, go. Get a good TA because discussion section matters! Take the quizzes with others. No electronics allowed in lecture. I was super close to an A & was a little disappointed because she said she boost people up especially if they had improved & she didn't.
Honestly your experience depends on your TA but I generally found her lectures confusing. She tried to be really general and broad so you never knew what to write down. Just write down everything she says, take quizzes in groups, and assignments should ridiculously easy. She's very nice and if you're into history, she'll love you.
Professor Taylor is extremely nice and her lectures are interesting and she is very helpful for long papers although the TA grades the smaller papers. She is very interested in Ancient Greek history and therefore is a very passionate professor. No labtops allowed in class but otherwise awesome class. I would take classe from her again!
Her lectures are extremely interesting if you are into everything Greek and Roman. She quizzes on material that she says in class, not what is on the slides. Electronics are not allowed. When she does release the lecture slides, it is well past lecture and any time helpful. She's never available. She also rants if the class did poorly on a quiz.
