Amazing professor - few tests and no other homework. Very interesting material

Lots of readings and if you want to do well you have to read it all. You are given all the possible exam questions before each of the 2 non-cumalative exam which is nice and there are 2 simple essays along with multiple extra credit opportunites. You will be called out for using any tech in class. Lectures can be boring/take longer then needed.

The readings are long and boring, but Cheng and her TAs made the class really interesting. I just wish we did more analytical study regarding the immigration stories, but, this is a 100 lvl course, so it makes sense for the very surface level and boring analysis

A genuinely amazing professor. She is warm, sagacious, humble, and willing to cooperate with students to help them succeed. The course reader packet is thick, and the reading hours are kind of long. However, the readings are interesting, and you can learn a lot if you read faithfully. Take her class for your ethnic studies requirement or for fun!

Cheng is so nice and her class is very clear. As long as you do the readings, you'll be fine.

Professor Cheng is a great professor who cares about her students and knows most of them on a personal level. Her cell phone policy is very scary at times and she is not afraid to call you out in front of the entire class. Electronic policy sucks, but it helps since its very lecture dependent. Cheng is very emphatic and truly loves her course.

no tech lot of reading

I took this class for ethnic studies, I shouldn't have. She doesnt post anything online, her lectures are long and for the most part useless, she doesnt let you take notes on your computer (technology ban in her class), her grading system is arbitrary and horrendous, the readings are looooong, and attendance is mandatory and unmakeupable. Just bad.

Way too much of homework and reading for anyone who's just trying to pass the breadth requirements. Also no electronics during lectures and no extensions of any kind, so you just have to intensively copy notes and memorize. It's a heavy class with a heavy textbook you have to buy.

She truly wants all of her students to succeed and has set the standard for professors for me. I got a bit lazy and stopped showing up to class and it was reflected in my grade, which was fair. So make sure to show up to class!

Interesting course, terrible professor. Vague to no grading criteria given for assignments, expect to be in the dark on what she wants for most of the course. She asks random rhetorical questions at points during discussion for no real reason.

Professor Cheng is a great lecturer and knows how to present, although she at times becomes a little too intense. She has a very strict no phones in class policy and will periodically shout at students in the back of the lecture hall for being off devices. She seems nice and understanding however also scares me at the same time.

Awesome teacher. The course content itself is super interesting and the teacher makes the class awesome. She has first-hand experience with the material taught and is beyond capable of expressing her ideas. The class was really well structured and made it easy for you to succeed as a student aslong you put the work in.

I really enjoyed Professor Cheng as an instructor. She does have a strict no electronics rule and attendance is heavily graded. If you do the readings and prepare for exams, you will get an A. She also gives lots of extra credit! Would definitely take AA 160 if you need an ethnic studies course

Professor Cheng is great! I loved History 200. She's incredibly knowledgable, pushes her students, and asks critical questions. Also gives great advice and insight on things outside the class! I highly recommend participating for easy points, and it's not hard to do. She 100% wants her students to succeed. Prob. 3-4 hours of reading/class period.

Professor Cheng was a good professor and did things in our best interest, like giving us the exam questions in advance. Her class is very organized but no phones or electronics are allowed in class and there are long, sometimes boring readings assigned in the course reader. But the last two books we read were actually very interesting.

Lots of homework, and take this class is just waste your time. The TA is not helpful at all.

I took HIS160 in Fall of 2020 (completely online). Lectures and discussion were both synchronous. Not hard to get an A if you did the assignments, which were based more on participation than quality.

Professor Cheng was always so nice during lectures. She adapted well to the online format and truly wanted everyone in the class to get a good grade. If you put in the time and do the work, the class is easy. She even gives extra credit opportunities for you to earn points you missed. Really nice and easy to be in class.

Loved her teaching style and probably the best professor I've had so far. As long as you show up for the lectures and listen you can definitely make an easy A. The class is slightly reading heavy, but as long as you keep up it shouldn't be too bad

Professor Cheng is a gem who really cares about her students. Knowing how difficult online classes can be, she got rid of all exams and quizzes this semester and changed her lecture to be only once a week. Grades were based entirely on weekly homework assignments. As long as you do the readings and participate, you'll get an A. Loved the class!

Professor Cheng is a fine professor, but one that loves assigning readings. These readings are important and need to be well understood to pass, as well as her lectures. However for a 100 level class the amount of effort you will put into receiving a good grade is not worth your time.

Cheng is a really good professor and she cares about how you do. It's not hard to get an A as long as you read and do the study guides. She will give you review sheets with every possible question for the exam. Then, the questions that are actually on the exam are randomly chosen. Go to review sessions. I did not like the no electronics policy.

Asian American 160 is a great choice to take for an Ethnic Studies Requirement because it also covers humanities. Professor Cheng's class was pretty simple: if you read, try on your papers, and go to lectures and exam review sessions, you will get an A. Cheng also offers optional extra credit which makes getting a good grade much easier.

Good lectures, but they are early. Make sure that you go to the review sessions that she holds before the tests, because she will give you the answers for each ID term and short answer questions.

Made a 75 minute 8 AM lecture super interesting. Only class I never missed or slept through.

Professor Cheng makes a class usually boring class interesting. She gives many extra credit opportunities in a class where there is no weight, and gives out review guides and review sessions where she gives you the answers to the exams. Skim readings and go to review sessions and you'll get an A. Take this class if you can.

Extra credit adds 2.5% of your grade, Cheng's lecture may be long and not mandatory but she is extremely intelligent and makes you think thoughtfully, discussion is great and a good use of time, and tests are extremely easy if you go to the review sessions. Put in about 5 hours of work a week, and you'll get an A.

Professor Cheng was amazing and super sweet. She truly cares about her students. There's a lot to read in this class, but the professor and the TAs go through the readings with the students for better understanding of the text. They also help you with the exams, basically giving you the answers. Highly recommend taking this class.

Ms. Cindy Cheng was a great professor. She gave interesting lectures on a history subject that not many know about, and her comments and insights on how this history was very interesting. She also is very caring and loves her students, although beware if you pull out an electronic device during lecture or arrive late on paper turn-in day.

I really like this class! Professor Cheng is super sweet and makes the course really interesting. It's a fair amount of reading, but not horrible. The tests and papers are exclusively on the reading, so lecture isn't super necessary. She and the TAs will basically give you the answers for the exams and papers. Discussion is mandatory but very easy.

When she says no electronics, she's NOT bluffing. Tips: Do the readings or you'll struggle with the exams, go to EVERY review session because she gives you the answers to the exams, and attend lecture because she gives out pop quizzes for extra credit. Oh, and study a head of time. The material isn't hard, but there's a lot of material covered.

She is really a passionate professor, wants her students to success the course. She is clear about not permitting cell phones or laptops, which is somewhat convenient and inefficient, but on the other side, this encourages students to attend class. The course itself is interesting, fun and inspiring.

She is a good professor but has a few flaws. A big thing was she would stop lectures to call students out for being on their phones. She is somewhat stubborn but not to a fault. Her class is very easy to pass if you do all the readings. She doesn't grade anything so it's up to TA's. However, she is passionate and wants her students to succeed.

Professor Cheng is kinda ditzy and can be awkward at times, but she is a good professor. She is passionate and truly knows her stuff when it comes to Asian American studies. There are two papers that weren't that bad and 2 exams that were non cumulative. She also offers extra credit. The TA's grade everything tho so you should go talk to them.

Awful teacher, horribly run class. TAs are even worse. Take a different course to fulfill your ethnic studies requirement.

Phenomenal professor! She's VERY CLEAR at the beginning of the semester about her teaching style, is very caring, and gives you everything to succeed. She lectures at at a good pace for note-taking. Anyone complaining about her is an irresponsible student with poor listening skills. NO LATE WORK!!! She says that many times; there's no excuse.

Cindy's the bomb. She's very smart, qualified, and passionate. She's interesting to listen to and a great professor. She wants you to learn and succeed, and is very willing to meet you at office hours. One of the best professors and best classes I've been in. Easy 4 credit class, but be ready to do the work. not hard though.

She has enthusiasm on what she is teaching but I can say she's terrible at actual teaching. She's so stubborn so that she would deduct 1/3 of your paper grade cuz u turned in late like 2 minutes. The most terrible thing is she's suck at making ppt for lecture. You will find urself wasted 1hours just writing on notes. At last she's soooo verbose.

Professor Cheng is fantastic. Her lectures are thought-provoking and even though I only took the class to fulfill a gen ed requirement, it was still interesting! Reading the articles and going to the review sessions before the exams is extremely helpful; she gives the answers and definitions at the sessions. Definitely complete the review sheets.

Extremely interesting. Loved her teaching and her passion for Asian American studies. One of the best professors I have had on campus. Has a clear grading criteria and is a generous grader. Lectures are interesting. Tries to help with grades as much as possible. Absolutely recommend her!

This class made me realize that the true tragedy of Asian American immigration lives on today. The decedents of Asian-Americans are oppressed to this day by having to take this horrible class. Lectures are borderline useless if you do the reading, just go to discussion. Take another ethnic studies class if possible.

Very interesting lecturer but exams are based solely on readings. Very easy class as exam questions are given beforehand and answers are given during office hours and lecture. Put in the effort and you will get an A.

Professor Cheng is the best professor I have ever had, she is so clear in her lectures and she gives a study guide for each exam with everything on it. There is a lot of readings, but if you keep up with the readings and show up to lecture, it will be an easy A. Prof. Cheng is ALWAYS there for help, and loves to get to know her students.

Not a super hard class. 2 papers, 2 exams. She gives you the exam study guide about 2 weeks prior to the exam and chooses 4 ID's and 4 short essays to put on the exam. Therefore you know what's coming ahead of time sort of. She gives 4-5 pop quizzes, 5 points each that count as extra credit toward your final grade. A lot of weekly readings!

Cheng is a tedious lecturer, often times saying the same thing over and over again without actually teaching much. She also assigns a staggering amount of readings that are equally tedious and uninteresting.

Great professor. Lectures aren't online and 2 papers and 2 essays are the only things that count toward your grade. However, she helps you a lot and makes sure that you get a good grade in the class.

Professor Cheng is engaging and cares about her students success. She is passionate about her subject matter and clear cut about her grading. I learned so much about Asian American history that I had never known and probably wouldn't have. Moreover, she is respectable and tries to get to know students that seek help. I would definitely recommend!

Not the worst when it comes to course material, but lectures are tedious. She belabors points and beats you over the head with "clever" cliches and neologisms. The class itself wasn't too difficult, but there's a lot of reading. I wouldn't recommend it for an ethnic studies requirement.

Great Professor. Take note though, no lectures will be put online ever. If you miss lecture you have to get notes from someone else.

The amount of reading for this class is ridiculous. Take SOC 220. For a 100 level class, the Cheng assigns many readings and long books, all of which seem to be due around papers, forcing you to trade off doing readings for papers. Additionally, papers must be turned in on paper and cannot be late at all, which she makes an odd obsession over.

Dr. Cheng is an absolute gem. She's very passionate about what she teaches. You have to write some papers and take a midterm and final. These are all super easy if you go to her office hours because she gives you the answers and outlines. 10/10 would recommend Dr. Cheng.

Lectures are frequently long and repetitive. This is mirrored in the readings almost perfectly as they will frequently make you stop and think "why am I reading the same thing again and again?"

You don't want this. "If you do the work, you'll get an A." False.

Professor Cheng is great. Her lectures are clear and relatively interesting. My TA was awesome and made discussion fun and interesting. That being said, if you are looking for an easy ethnic-studies class, this is not it. Two 5-7 papers along with a writing midterm and test. Plus, there are 40-50 pages of reading a week that WILL be on the test.

This is the only class that I could stay awake in. And it's pretty interesting in my opinion. The only thing is that she does is push her opinions pretty strongly. Also she doesn't put lectures online and the readings are really long and repetitive.

if you were international students, it is very difficult because midterm and final review requires for good listening skills and there is not grading standard for evaluating midterm and final exam. For example, most of TAs have a little different grading standard. And, Cheng professors always laugh at something, student cannot understand it.

Professor Cheng is amazing because she knows how to teach, is passionate about the class, and knows her stuff. Readings are long, but are very interesting and beneficial. Exams are easy because ques are given to you beforehand. Every day I leave class learning a lot! Great professor, very interesting class, and an easy A.

If you put in an honest effort, you should get an A in this class. She gives you all the essay questions before an exam, so it is very easy to prepare. Readings are long and boring, but it is easy to go back and pick out the points you will need for tests. Recommend for ethnic studies.

Pretty boring class but extremely easy. Cindy provides all the questions that will be on the exams. Papers are graded generously.

Class is a joke. Incredibly easy; if you get below an AB, you clearly did not try in the class. Getting extra credit is crucial to getting an A, so make sure you try your best to do that. Just do a thorough job on the study guides that she gives you and try on the papers and you'll ace the class.

The readings are super dry and long as mentioned. However, I found the class to be quite interesting. Don't hesitate to speak with TAs and/or Prof. Cheng for essay help. They are very willing and very helpful. Exams are great because she gives you exactly what you need to study.

Professor Cheng is helpful and nice. She always likes to give you wonderful suggestions to help you develop your paper, as well as answering questions. She will give you the about 20 questions and choose 7 of them in each exam. As long as you attend class, take notes and read books, you will earn a A. Dennis is my TA. I recommend him to you.Nice!

She is very friendly and nice. The only bad thing about the class is the loooong, boring weekly readings and having power lectures because after the first 50 minutes of only listening to her talking and taking notes you start zoning out.

I really enjoyed Cindy. Young and lively. Left the class very interested in topic. She made the class interesting. Readings are very bland and long. Discussions are pointless but manditory. Tests are blue book essays but she gives you all the possible questions a head of time. Lecture attendence is manditory for a good grade.

Although she gives you a study guide with the questions, she is just way to annoying and boring to give a good score. She laughs about everything which and just looks foolish. The readings are the worst, most boring pieces of literature I've ever seen! Plus, you need to read all of them for the test! Only take her if you like LONG boring text!

Good professor. Reading is long and boring and you'll be tested on it. Tests weren't bad because she'd give you the possible questions beforehand and pick some and put them on the test. The hard part was reading the really boring and dry course reader.

Professor Cheng was the best professor that I have ever had. I came into the class with very low interest and left with a very high interest. This is definitely the best ethnic studies option out there. The exams are very straightforward as long as you put the time in to plan your answers before the exam. Take this class. You will not regret it.

Good for ethnic studies. The Course reader is thick and literally dense. The pop quizzes are good and there's plenty of extra credit. She's easy to talk to but very repetitive of herself. If you do everything right you can get %50 on the final and still get an A. She cares about the subject and the students. She's also a very fine looking woman.

Professor Cheng was a delightful professor who truly cares about the hard times of Asian Americans throughout history in America. If you're looking for an easy ethnic studies course with lecture attendance optional, this is it. I had no interest in anything to do with asians and managed to pull of an A with MINIMAL effort. Go Cindy Cheng!

She is VERY enthusiastic, clear, and helpful. However, in my class, she covered what is at most 10 minutes worth of material in 75 minute lectures, which made for easy but very repetitive sessions. She is friendly with students; as long as the painfully repeated instructions are followed, it is easy to get an A. As indicated, she is indeed a babe.

Professor Cheng is great! She really likes what she teaches and is always loose and has fun with the material. She is also more than happy to help you with your paper. She holds a review before the test and tells you exactly how to answer as many questions as you can get through as possible. Also do your readings and this is an easy A.

She gives awesome lectures, makes you really interested in the subject matter by teaching it in easy-to-digest bits. Shows lots of videos. Exams aren't that hard as long as you attend class, def. can get an A. Very approachable during office hours. One of my favorite professors so far!

So nice, and really helpful. Just go to lecture and read and you will get an A!
