The exams he makes are freaking ridiculous. The questions are confusing as heck. I spend half the time just trying to understand what he's even asking. And he usually requires you to put the answer in an oddly specific format or else it will be marked as wrong. Would definitely NOT take a class with him ever again.
phhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Be ready to have assignments randomly created three days before they are due. Lecture? No, he won't lecture, instead he will assign 1-2 hour long pre-lectures and use lecture as time for in-class assignments. Is the structure of the course laid out clearly in the syllabus? No, the syllabus is the most vague I've seen in my three years at UW.
Tilmann clearly knows his stuff, but fails to understand that students usually don't. He assigns copious amounts of prelecture material, and expects you to watch his past lectures before attending actual lecture which cover the exact same material. However, you can't skip lecture due to random attendance quizzes. Also, 90% of your grade is 4 exams.
If you're not already cracked at genetics, don't take a class with him. He never explains how to actually do anything; you're expected to already understand the course content before you arrive at lecture. During lecture, he essentially tells riddles and expects the students to solve them. He doesn't teach at all. Don't take a class with him.
Kit is very accessible and cares about students' learning. Sometimes the course can be overwhelming in terms of depth, but lecture is very valuable.
Lectures are straightforward and easy to understand however exams fail to reflect the lecture content and contain trick questions. Professor was also rude over email.
The class was structured where you could attend lectures in person, live over zoom, or recordings. There are 5 exams including the final but you get one exam drop. There were also 2 discussions and reflections outside of class that were easy. Exams were through canvas and open note so as long as you take good notes and pay attention, you'll be fine
His exam questions are too vague.
Prof Tilmann is very knowledgeable & learly enjoys teaching. Book is supplementary but lectures are based off book material (but info is sometimes added/not covered). Tilmann teaches the first 4 units & Hittinger teaches the last one. 5 exams, 1 final, lowest gets dropped (including final). Grades are mostly exams. Be sure to watch/go to lectures
The lecture videos themselves were straightforward, the exams were nothing like the lectures. There were always problems on the exams that he never actually told us how to do. The study guide had one question like it at best but it was hard to translate one practice problem into actually learning the material.
grade consisted of 5 exams, 2 discussion posts, and 2 virtual synchronous discussions. Professor was really nice and even made changes to the grade cutoffs at the end of the semester but your grade is really just dependent on the 5 tests. Professor himself knows what he's talking about
