I skipped most of the lectures because of my transportation situation, but honestly that was one of my biggest regrets about the semester: if I could go back I would attend every class religiously. McKelvey was super engaging and I genuinely don't know if you could ask for a better lecturer on the subject.

The man, the myth, the legend. He is clear, very animated and makes an otherwise boring subject interesting.

You can tell he is passionate about Econ and he makes things easy to understand. The only assignments besides exams are problem sets which are reasonable in difficulty and length. He outright says his exams are hard so he can see who truly understands the material, but he curves them.

Hands down the best professor I have had at UW Madison. I actually enjoyed all of his lectures. It takes me awhile to grasp information but he explains things in a way where it makes sense right away. He's not the most generous with the partial credit on exams but you cant win em all. Seriously take his class though I'd never steer you wrong.

McKelvey is the best professor I have had while at UW-Madison. While the content is difficult, he makes it digestible and genuinely cares about students. He is engaging, nice, and always willing to help students.

Worst econ professor ever. This is my last course in econ, and I am sure Chris is the worst econ professor I have ever met. The other econ professors care about students learning things, but Chris only care about "acting like fair professor." DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE!

Prof. McKelvey knows his stuff. He's super caring and SUPER organized. He has a great way of tying everything down towards the end of the semester and he is frank about his expectations. He is always available via email. One con though: he does a lot of his math on slides. It would've been nice to have in-class exercises to make it interactive.

The best professor I have had at UW-Madison. His lectures were very clear to understand and interesting, which is a relief because the textbook is very confusing. He always responded to emails very fast when I had questions with problem sets. This could have been a brutal class with a lesser professor.

Absolutely amazing job at explaining one of the hardest parts of economics. Lectures are recorded, solutions posted for everything, goes slowly and doesn't skip over anything. really really good

Professor McKelvey is easily the best professor I've had at UW. He is always willing to meet outside of class to help and shows that he cares. You are also allowed a note card for equations on exams. Great guy, but this course is also the hardest class I've taken so try to get a study group.

Took Professor McKelvey for both Econ 310 & Econ 410. As the other reviews say, his lectures are awesome and he posts them all online. Very good at explaining difficult concepts, and he is always open to answering questions in class. Also, very accessible outside of lecture whether it be through zoom or office hours. Great Professor!!!

Extremely excellent professor! very expert in his field! Lectures and curriculum are both very well organized! Exams are very fair! Thus, for a student who is good at math, you can contribute your time on other courses. One of the best professors in UW-M

This professor is excellent, the course material was challenging (at least for me) but he was very concise and helped break down problems into smaller steps, I also loved that he never spent to much time on the "proof" of formulas, focusing on the problems themselves. Quiz grading can be a bit unclear at times and cengage is awful for homework.

Course content was pretty difficult and confusing but Chris is an awesome professor. He's great and is easily available outside of class to help guide or sort out any problems. He is understanding and approachable. We had problems due weekly and 2 Stata assignments otherwise the class is based on the quizzes and the grade is curved fairly.

McKelvey is one of the best professors I've had here at UW. Super caring and down to earth and his lectures are easy to listen to. Tests are very easy, as they are open book and online. The concepts and expectations are very clear.

Awful! Professor Mckelvey is such a tough grader. He always deducts lots of ridiculous points on the homework, so there is no way you can do perfect. Also, his exams are impossible. They are way much harder than the sample exam and the average is like a C. He also goes over the lecture really fast and makes you hard to follow. Avoid it at all cost.

Tough content, but his lectures were amazing. All the lectures were posted online and they will be enough to get you through the class. Id recommend doing the discussion activities since they do really help with exams. By far my favorite prof so far

Great professor, although the content can be dry and difficult. As someone that is not a fan of or very good at stats, this class Chris made this class more than reasonable. Put in a a fair amount of effort and you can easily get a B. Tests are very difficult but curved fairly. The class as a whole was curved favorably as a 60% secured a BC.

Stats is not my favorite subject but I really enjoyed the way McKelvey taught this class. Lecture content is dry but his presentation/inflection helped make it more bearable. Tests are tough but graded very fairly with lots of partial credit. Section notes are very helpful for studying. Would definitely take this class with McKelvey again!

McKelvey was by far the best professor Ive ever had at UW. Its clear that hes very passionate about what he teaches/ does, and it rubs off. He makes difficult material easy to understand, and is great at telling the story behind a problem. All his exams are fair; Ive learned more from his course than any other. 10/10 recommend as a prof!

Awesome professor. Have taken 310 and 400 with him, and both times he was a great lecturer. Handled online classes very well, and in person was great. Content can be difficult at times, especially when you miss class. The problem sets are fair and due once a week. Other than tests there is no other assignments. Class is curved fairly.

Chris is very helpful outside of class with his office hours so take advantage of that, the final should be fairly similar to the quizzes which are OK.

Chris is a cool dude and is super responsible during his office hour. I chatted with him regularly and it turned out he is a really talented professor. Take 310 and 410 with him if you can. Pac is for easy A people. If u want to learn some real statistics, stick with Chris.

Truly a great experience. The class is based on four 25-question quizzes, homework, and a cumulative final. I have a background in stats (AP stats in HS) and found the class to be a breeze. Even if I hadn't had that previous experience I think this class would still be doable. Lectures are clear and quizzes are not meant to trick you. Great guy.

great professor. I could've done a lot better in this class if I had taken it more seriously at the start. It gets kinda hard after the first of 4 quizzes. I am very nervous for the cumulative final. I am not great at math and have never taken statistics but still expect to get a B overall. Great prof. Content-heavy lectures and GO TO discussions!

Great professor. God awful class. Came here to just comment on the class itself

Asynchronous lectures and open-note, open-book exams testing a deeper understanding of class concepts - 100% the way to go during online semesters. Lectures are excellent preparation for problem sets, which are in turn excellent preparation for exams. This course is conceptually challenging, and Professor McKelveys delivery of it is outstanding.

Great man.

Very patient and vert inspiring. Answer all the questions with great explanation.

Prof tries to help as best as possible, which is more than can be said for most profs

If you like econ/stats, you will love McKelvey. He is incredibly nice, has amazing lectures, and is great at explaining things. His classes aren't easy, but effort you put in will be rewarded.

410 is pretty hard. prof is a smart guy which sometimes make me feel lost during lecture, however, as you do not have much choice for this course, he is a good choice. Clear HW and exam, just prepare for a hard time. 410 is hard and I feel acceptable after ending with B (I know you guys will get A while I cannot).

PA 974 and ECON 410 Chris is the best lecturer ever! Extremely helpful and tailor the academic research for us policy-oriented majors. With this being said, this class incorporate both policy simulations and its underlying Econ logic, enabling someone like me pretty weak in econometrics to enjoy less quant-intensive papers and fruitful discussions.

McKelvey is AWESOME. Econ 400 is a tough class, but the work load is manageable and he answers emails within the day. Always available for help and wants students to succeed. If you have a chance to take 400 or 410 with him DO IT. Tests are tricky, but they are totally fair. Don't need the textbook.

He is amazing!!! He is my most favorite professor! He really cares about his students and is willing to take extra time to answer questions! He is the only professor whom I will not blame or complain if I get a bad grade in the end! I think any student who wants to study econometric should take his class and you will get more than you think!

I almost didn't take this class because I hated 310 so bad, but ended up really enjoying it with McKelvey. Great guy, entertaining lecturer (on a rather uninspiring subject) and his tests were difficult but well written.

McKelvey is an awesome professor. Even though statistics is agonizing, he tries his best to make it exciting and clear. However, go through EVERYTHING he puts on lectures, as some times he makes questions on stuff barely covered. Test material isn' hard. Discussions are pretty much useless, unless you want extra practice. Good guy and solid class.

One of the best professors I've ever had. Super nice, typical white dad professor. Answers emails you have about anything, is extremely helpful in office hours when reviewing what I messed up on my exams. Presents the material in a really clear, organized way and cares a lot about his students. I really hope I can take 410 from him too. 12/10!

I literally love Christopher McKelvey. He made 310 so doable and its so clear he SERIOUSLY cares about his students. He WANTS you to learn- and he'll do anything he can to help!! I cannot recommend him enough. Problem sets are a usual part of econ classes, and he makes himself very available for extra help. 10/10 on EVERYTHING for this man

One of the best professors I've had at the University. He's extremely passionate about his lectures and even as a power lecture it was great. Material is built up from simple statistics which makes it doable for any background. I would recommend this class for both econ and non-econ majors to really understand statistics in a good class.

McKelvey makes stats about as exciting as possible, which is to say not very exciting. However, you can tell he really wants his students to do well in his class and does what he can to prepare you for his tests, which generally are a bit harder than practice tests but follow the same structure. Take him for 310 if you can.

The class was really hard, yeah. But he's a good guy and he really cares and wants you to do well. He can go through the lecture slides a bit fast, so I recommend you read the textbook ahead of time/look at them - and clear up misunderstandings right away. Otherwise, he is a good professor and knows his stuff

This is my second course with McKelvey. He gives excellent lectures and is always helpful during office hours. Tests are difficult, but always fair. Grading policies are clearly established early in course. Overall one of my favorite professors, I highly recommend him for 310 and 410.

His 310 class was just amazing. Crystal clear expectations, amazing ability to explain even the most difficult concepts, deep understanding of material, perfect lecture and discussion notes and perfect overall course organization. He is a truly outstanding educator. Take him for any course he teaches.

McKelvey is great. Econ stats can be pretty boring, but he makes it as interesting as humanly possible. You really have to work for an A in this class, but a B really isn't hard to get. The material can feel overwhelming, but the way the class is set up and curved it is not hard at all to get a B. Overall, get McKelvey if you can.

McKelvey is a great lecturer and very enthusiastic about the material; however, intro stats is super boring and isn't fun, no matter who teaches it. So, lectures are boring, but at least he tries to make it as interesting as possible. Tests are relatively difficult and he will put some tricky things on there. Problem sets are easy.

One of the best! 310 is never easy, but it's very doable with McKelvey. Exams aren't at all hard if you prepare well (pay attention/take notes in lecture, go to discussion and understand how to do the handout problems). Math expectations are very fair. He's passionate, fun, and an all-around terrific professor. Homework isn't hard. Highly recommend

This class is hard no matter who you take it with but Christopher makes it somewhat bearable. He's so nice and extremely willing to work with his students. He allows a notecard on each midterm and 2 for the final, which is honestly the only way to survive. If you absolutely have to take Econ 310, take it with him!

Topher is a great professor. He's super enthusiastic about his course and statistics as a whole. He lets you use a notecard on exams so you don't have to memorize difficult equations. His exams are fair and weekly homeworks don't take too long. Study his slides and go to lecture to maximize your learning. Overall, I'd highly recommend him.

Really great professor. Explains things in a clear way and gives lots of examples. Always able to explain things in another way if you don't understand it. You definitely need to study for the exams and show up to lecture but he makes things really straight forward and the homework help a lot

He is amazing. very approachable and clear in explaining concepts

Professor McKelvey is a real star in the Econ department. He is a lecturer, so he is truly focused on his students and not his own research. Lectures can get a little boring but that is due to the material and not him. I would highly recommend taking 410 with McKelvey. He's helpful, easy to understand, and just a really cool guy in general!

When it comes to Econometrics, I would highly recommend prof. McKelvey because he taught so well on its application. He used a lot of examples to help you understand the material. He is very generous and always willing to help. His exams and grading criteria are very fair. (He talks a lot about his expectation and that is very clear)

This was the most boring class I've taken in Madison. Every lecture was the same: go over slides, hear him talk the entire time, and go over examples. There was a decent amount of online work but he gives you the benefit of having 3 chances to answer each chapter section. His exams were very difficult b/c he uses least important formulas. watch out

Professor McKelvey was very clear in teaching the material and showed interest in the subject. Which is nice for statistics because it can get a little bland and tedious. Homework is weekly but not too hard and it helps with the exams. Tests are a little challenging but the curve is fair. Final was a little more difficult, but not unfair.

Lectures are excruciatingly boring, but its probably the material and not him, though he is a bit monotone. The material increases in difficulty midway through the semester, and I cant shake the feeling that it couldve been explained more clearly. Probably 1/2 the class shows up to lecture. He lets you use a notecard on exams which is nice

McKelvey is an excellent professor. Easy with his curve to get a B and if you put in some work to get an AB. Tests cover everything so need to have a solid command of material. I have taken 2 classes with him and would take again.

McKelvey is a phenomenal educator with reasonable exams given that the class has a generous curve. He is very good at answering questions in lecture and his examples bring life to concepts in econometrics that might otherwise be boring or dull. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat. Very kind and always responds promptly to emails.

Fantastic Professor! Definitely tough, but is very clear about his expectations. Super helpful in office hours. Econometrics is a really boring subject if you're not super interested, but he makes it about as interesting as it can be. Still cares about teaching and it shows in how well thought out the class is. Definitely one of UW-Madison's stars.

He was very, very passionate and knowledgeable. I did badly on the first exam and I sent him a short email expressing that I wanted to drop the class. He replied my with entire page of things that really helped me. I managed to stay and got a good grade. His tests were INDEED very hard, but his grading is fair but not inflexible.

Professor McKelvey is a very good professor. He made math understandable. His test are hard and his assignments are weekly, but they all help you understand the material better. I went to lecture even though you don't have to. Because of the university's scheduling of 301 and 310 within 12 hours of each other my grade dropped a letter.A B is doable

Great lecturer! He helped make a dry and tedious subject very interesting. A fair amount of homework is assigned, but it is helpful for the tests. The tests are quite difficult, so studying is required. However, he allowed students to use a cheat sheet on tests, which makes it easier to recall the equations that should be used.

McKelvey's lectures are clear and succinct but I had trouble paying attentionstaying awake in them so I ended up going to less and less as the semester wore on. It did not affect my grade, however. As long as you do the problem sets (online homework), read the textbook, and do practice problems, you will do well.

Fantastic professor. Understands college students in all aspects. Fought hard for company to lower online textbook price, homework helpful and never busy work. I attended maybe 25% of lectures, always good when I went but powerpoints were so clear, still did well on exams without attending lecture. Tests were fair.

Very approachable, lectures are fast but they're so thorough that you hardly ever need to open the book. Exams are very fair. He's a great professor and always willing to help, answers emails very promptly. The problem sets are very manageable and the discussion handouts he makes do a great job of covering all the material you need to know.

Mckelvey is a great professor. Gives really good feedback and really easy to talk to about material. Willing to clarify any questions if you need. Majority of exam materials are covered in class. Problem sets not too hard if you spend time on them. Class is pretty boring by nature but, really, it's stats. Really good professor and I recommend.

I lost points on an exam, (unjustly) went in and talked to him, after reviewing it his response was, "I don't know what whoever graded this was thinking, have your points back" I didn't have to argue or anything. He's a super nice guy. Tests are hard but doable. Homework is kinda tedious. But his lectures aren't bad for a 75 minute stat tests.

Really great professor. I enjoyed his class structure and explained difficult concepts well. I highly recommend him.

McKelvey's lectures are indeed too fast & dense. Don't need to attend them; I did only as a sponge to soak up whatever I can. But he's incredibly helpful & approachable. Gives the most detailed email responses I've ever seen from a prof. Exams not too tough, but you NEED to study for them. Cool guy; would gladly take a class with him again.

Great professor, extremely approachable and intelligent. One of my best experiences in Madison

Barely anybody attended lecture. Christopher goes too fast in lecture, and is very hard to listen to. Overall not a terribly hard class as exams are similar to aplia and practice, however lecture is not interesting and could easily be if he knew how to intrigue students.

Really tough class, but they don't get much better than this professor. No one talks in the 300 person lecture, but he tries to keep it interesting. Tests are very similar to practice exam we receive a week or two before. I would highly recommend him.

Awesome professor. Super nice/understanding guy. Very straightforward. Exams are extremely fair and he is also a great exam designer. Creates questions that accurately measure knowledge/ability that also separate students in tiers. Highly recommend.

Extremely good professor and not a hard class. There are shortcuts to remember things, ex: cobb douglas demand. Learn how to derive it and not memorize the trick. It will make the class very easy. Book is not very useful because the notes are online. His work with development economics is also interesting to talk to him about.

Professor McKelvey is interesting and approachable. Lecture was pretty boring. The class did not participate in anything. The homework was far too easy to adequately prepare the class for exams, but the curve was good.

Mckelvely has a very good, succinct way of lecturing and is very approachable when it comes to asking questions after class. Definitely one of the best professors I've had so far in the major. My only complaint is the final was overly difficult in comparison to the previous midterms.

Professor McKelvey is a great professor. His lectures encapsulate all that you need to know for the class. Tests are very straightforward. Doing the homework is crucial. Generous curve at the end.

hard class but makes it easier, mostly concepts.

One of the best professor ever. The class is not easy but he is always willing to help. Very helpful and friendly

Very good professor! Super clear. Though the concepts are too much, they are not hard to understand. Easy A.

answers to problem sets are given in discussion pretty much. midterms are the same as the past midterms that he posts online. easy A dont know how people can get less than a B in this class especially with the curve he gives.

Good professor and very well-spoken. Powers through the lecture slides though. Exams are very fair, but there is a lot of material. The concepts are not hard to grasp though

it is hard because you need to remember a lot. Class is boring simply go through the slides. HW is uncorrelated with book. Need to spend huge amount of time on the course.

Good teacher and good guy. Always willing to help. The class is difficult though- I don't recommend it. Midterm 2 average was 63. It covers way too much material and you are responsible for knowing it all. (especially for the cumulative final).

Very easy to understand lectures. Power point slides are organized and explain thing effectively. Highly recommended.

New professor, but his lecturing was clear, and he was easy to understand. Highly recommended!
