Christine is so sweet, caring, and compassionate. She creates such a warm environment and made class enjoyable and low-stress. Was such a nice break in an otherwise busy day. The content was interesting and class is heavily discussion based. The curriculum feels scattered and redundant at points, but that may just be the topic matter.

Prof Garlough is caring, funny and truly a joy to learn from and with.

I could not recommend Professor Garlough enough! The care she has for her students and the topics she teaches is unmatched. I would truly be honored to take another one of her classes!!!!

If all professors were like Dr. Garlough, the world would be a much better place. Lectures are full of lots of information but the environment is very friendly and Dr. Garlough is very understanding.

Professor Garlough is super sweet and has her students' best interest at heart. However, the required readings were not discussed during discussion most of the time, and her lectures covered so many topics, but all superficially. Her slides had too much information on. The midterm/final and paper were all fairly easy to do well on and get an A.

Best professor hands down. Genuinely cares about her students wellbeing and taking something out of her class. Not hard grader, she just wants you to learn and take what's being said in her class to the outside world. She IS amazing. She's so personable and super interesting to listen to. HIGHLY recommend!

Professor Garlough teaches for freshman, and if you're not a freshman this class is so boring because you have probably learned this stuff in 2 or 3 other classes. Her lectures are unorganized, with wayy too much info on the slides. She says nothing that you can't get from the assigned readings. She's nice enough, but is a terrible lecturer.

Professor Garlough is absolutely amazing, and it shows throughout her lectures. It is obvious how passionate she is about the subject, and how much she cares for her students. It is easy to meet up outside of class with questions, and she is ready to help. There is a bit of ready, but they are all interesting. I would highly recommend this class!

She gives the best advice to "highlight" and "star" in your notes. The only things that are graded are 2 exams and a paper. Garlough gives you a new perspective on things. She was sometimes unorganized and the class didnt really focus on a global perspective. Overall, one of the best professors at UW.

Possibly my favorite professor I've had here thus far! So genuine and really cares about her students. Lectures are not mandatory since she puts all of the power points online, and only a general knowledge about the readings is needed for the exams. One midterm, one paper, and a take home final plus the option for 2% worth of extra credit!

Probably the easiest four credit class I've taken here so far. Garlough is mindful & fair. The test were easy, the final is take home, & there is one paper. I found her lectures rather boring & discussion was a waste of time, I never felt like we did anything productive. You do have to have some knowledge on the readings if you want to do well.

She is an absolutely amazing professor! would recommend any class that she teaches because she cares about her job, cares about what she teaches, and cares about her students. Tons of reading, but it all helps you develop as a student and adult without a doubt!

Amazing professor! She is by far the most genuine, understanding professor I have ever had. No exams, only participation and papers. Classes are long, but you get out early almost every class and she brings snacks :) Too many nice things to say about this woman. If you need humanities credit, take this class. You won't regret it!

The midterm was on the readings assigned (which were mostly long and some boring). It was difficult and a large portion of the grade. Luckily my TA was a lenient grader. Her lectures were interesting and she has a great sense of humor and is very likable. The subject material was dry at times, but I learned about a lot of important issues.

I liked Professor Garlough well enough. Not my favorite professor, but in general lectures were interesting. What bothered me was the excessive group work and videos. Though helpful from time to time, they were used so often I kind of felt like they were an easy out so that she didn't have to lecture for three hours (understandable but annoying).

One of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Extremely passionate about what she teaches, gives very interesting lectures. Will definitely miss her.

She is amazing. So passionate about her work and her students. There are a lot of readings, but very few graded assignments. A lot information in each lecture, so I wouldn't recommend skipping often

She's really great! I came in a pre-business major and after taking this class, I am a gender and women's studies major! I absolutely loved it! a lot of reading, but all very interesting and beneficial! highly recommend!

Also listed as Folklore 570. Prof. Garlough leads awesome discussion, and pretty much everyone came to class prepared. Reading was interesting, and difficult concepts were made clear. It's a great class to take early because the theory will come up in other classes and she teaches an innovating analysis. Smart as heck.

I can't say enough good things about Garlough. She makes you think beyond what you already know. Super nice, and treats everyone as her equals. You do have to go to class to get a good grade, but trust me, you'll WANT to be there anyway. 3 projects and a paper, but they're not terrible; she mainly wants to see you push yourself & try your best.

lectures are fairly interesting and are laid out in the course packet. just follow along with the powerpoints and add notes and you'll be fine. never read the book at all, just went in to office hours with Garlough and my TA and was an easy A. just make sure to see your TA about the papers to find out exactly what they are looking for.

Prof. Garlough's lectures are easy to follow and generally has them printed out already in your course reader. The information isn't difficult to grasp and the fact that she provides many examples helps a lot too. It's not hard to do well in this class if you put some effort in.

Never went to office hrs but she's super welcoming and genuine. Class is fairly easy, but papers a large portion of grade and graded by TAs so that can go either way. Def recommend to prospective CA majors.

Prof.Garlough is helpful only if you ask her questions in person. She never replies to emails, ever. I always had to consult my TA, who was fortunately quick with emails. Prof.Garlough is a nice woman but she forces you to talk to the next person, like every 5 mins. Also asking philo questions like "what is reality" at 8:50am just doesnt work.

Coming from somebody who appreciates communication, this class got really boring really fast. Is she nice? Very. Helpful? Very. But if you don't like theories piled on top of theories, and being forced to talk to the person next to you during every lecture, and bland material, then avoid this class, unless you're majoring in Communication/Rheotoric

She is a very nice lady. Got an A in the class but had to work pretty hard. There are three papers and three tests. The papers are each at least 6 pages long, so they require quite a bit of work.

Prof. Garlough is really nice and she genuinely cares about her students and how they do. The material, though, is quite boring. It's all theoretical, so if that doesn't sound terribly interesting, this may not be the class for you.

very interesting material, very good professor, she seems to genuinely care about students and their well-being

Garlough was a very good teacher, very clear and concise with straight forward tests. the papers were more difficult so a little more time is needed for those but there's a lot of different ways to do well in the class

Great Professor!

This was one of my easiest courses. I made it to 3 lectures and only read 2 articles for my papers. I ended up with an easy A in this course. Honestly, the days I made it to lecture Professor Garlough was incredibly interesting.

Professor Garlough's little review sheets are worthless.

I thought the tests were hard! I studied days to get B's. Comparatively, I felt the papers were easy. At first they were confusing, but a brief talk with my TA showed the way. Some of the papers were really easy, did all of my research and wrote the paper in 3 hours for 2 of the papers.

it was an interesting class and I learned a lot. The papers were kind of hard but the notes were very organized with powerpoint and the tests were pretty easy. Discussion wasnt always helpful

She's a very animated and interesting professor. She cares about her students, but it's really the TA who grades you. Nobody told me it was a freshman writing-intensive class! Really great material though, and you'll learn a lot that you probably never would have thought about.

Your grade really depends on the TA. Garlough is awesome though. She really knows her stuff and loves answering your questions and piquing your interest.

Very boring class. Depending on the TA, the papers can be graded pretty easy. You do not need to attend lectures, just make sure to pick up the copies of notes she hands out at every class. Once again, very boring and idiotic class.

Papers are tough, tests are not and discussion is boring. Otherwise, this class is very interesting, she is very clear, very helpful, and very nice. She is extremely accomodating and makes you feel like she really does care about her students and her studies. I like her.

papers in this class SUCK, lecture is interesting and the prof is amazing. discussions are boring and tests aren't too hard. but once again, the papers are hard

Professor Garlough is dedicated and intelligent. She runs a tight class but keeps things interesting, even when dealing with some heavy topics. Lots of class discussion and interaction. It is clear she cares a great deal about her students.
