Often, she would have due dates for assignments and not upload the necessary course materials to be accessed online in a timely manner. I was working a summer job during this course, so it was very frustrating when I couldn't work ahead or complete assignments due the next day due to technical difficulties.
Professor Toma does not engage with the class. All lectures are prerecorded and she obviously prefers to work on her personal research than teach the class. All work is put on the TA so hope for a good one.
This course was broken up with you doing the lesson online, going to a small discussion, and going to a lecture sized discussion all covering the same material for the week. This was kind of repetitive but there were a lot of activities involved and none of them were difficult. do the lessons and the take notes and the 3 exams are not hard
Being online, the lectures were written out lesson style and home some recorded videos but the course concepts were easy to understand and the weekly quizzes were pretty easy. The toughest part of this class is the research paper which is very involved
Super nice professor and you can tell that she is actually interested in/dedicated to what she is teaching. I wish the class wasn't hybrid but other than that it was great!
I love Professor Toma! I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews here. The modules are organized very well and there is a consistent schedule throughout the class. I really enjoyed the content too, but I am CA major.
Professor Toma is really really nice once you get to know her. Her classes are not easy. If you are looking for a easy A class, this is not it. But, If you are really interested in the topic, this is right class for you. She is one the top professor in field and you can learn a lot from her.
Very condescending and gives useless feedback. The final research paper is ridiculously worth 15% of your grade and the revision is worth another 10%. The TA's also give little to no feedback. Other than that, the lectures and quizzes are just memorization. I took this for my comm b requirement, and I would not recommend it.
Prof. Toma and her TA are awful. Don't take this class for Com B. They are not helpful to students. The final paper project is ridiculous. You can be easily accused of plagiarism on the annotated bibliography because they only trust Turnitin and they will not hear your side of the story. Your entire grade is up to the quizzes.
Catalina is very knowledgeable but still friendly and down-to-earth. Her lectures work really well with the online structure, and you can see she is passionate about social psychology and communication, which is super cool if you're also a Communications major!
Definitely a solid choice if you're looking for an online class. All of the materials were very clear and expectations were clear from the first lecture. The TA's are also very helpful and accessible outside of class.
Prof. Toma easily ran the best online class I've ever taken! The whole course was well-organized and nothing was there that didn't need to be. She adds fun youtube clip examples in the online lectures and includes interesting studies/findings. Definitely a great online Comm-B class!!
This is the first time that CA272 is taught online... and it shows. The thesis paper was ridiculous. The TAs and Professor Toma seemed to be extremely disconnected. I'm really disappointed that I wasted my money. If this was the first CA class I took in college, I never would have decided to be a Comm Arts major.
This class had the potential to be super interesting but Toma ruined it. Lectures AND discussions are just going over readings. Toma was super condescending to students. Assignments were just busy work. The class gave her decent suggestions to improve the class after the midterm, she did not listen to them at ALL. Very disappointed w/this class.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Condescending, not open to students feedback (this was the first time this course was offered). The exams are just memorizing studies that are assigned (that's what lectures were too, just repeating the assigned studies). Don't take this class.
Decent lecturer, cares about the material but gets off track at times. Slides aren't the clearest so if you do not go to class and rely on just what she posts online, you'll have a hard time putting things together. Plus a lot of the stuff on the tests are what she talks about in lecture. The thesis paper is ridiculous and unclear in standards.
This class was really underwhelming. I expected a lot more. I got pretty upset about the lack of understanding about masculinity/femininity and sex/gender. I took the time to correct in class once but she continued messing up the words, even though she said I was right. She seemed pretty sarcastic and nonchalant to me overall.
It is hard for me to separate Toma from my TA as my ta was grading everything. I took this for comm b and it's tanking my gpa. My ta was lackluster at best and I found the tests quite difficult for such a straightforward topic. Really disappointed in this class.
Toma is a great professor and one of the leading researchers in this topic. I found this class to be really difficult which I didn't expect for the topic, but she's teaching a more dumbed down version next semester. She is very smart and knowledgable, but tests were extremely difficult! The 20 group page paper was very hard too. Interesting topic!
Professor Toma was a great professor! Her lectures were always engaging, and she genuinely cares about the success of her students. She is realistic with the test content and always gives students a study guide for the material, which is pretty cohesive. Reading is not really mandatory, but if you want to do exceptionally well on exams you should.
The class had very little clear cut grading criteria and didn't allow for much flexibility considering it is an online class. It was incredibly annoying when trying to work in a discussion group of only two people and your grade depends on this.
Catalina is a little quiet in lecture, but her lectures are amazing. All of the studies she presents on Interpersonal Comm are relevant and are actually interesting. She's always willing to help students during office hours. This class, although it may seem intuitive still requires some effort. The exams are not the easiest.
Catalina Toma was an amazing professor. The lectures were interesting and she would find ways to relate almost everything we learned back into real life situations. It's clear what's expected of you. I took it with friends and all of us fell in love with Dr. Toma. Great class and a better teacher. I would recommend this class to anyone at UW.
Toma is a great lecturer and uses lots of discussion with students to elaborate topics. The topics are interesting and applicable. Don't bother reading, tests are on lecture material exclusively except 1 or 2 exceptions which she provides. Tests are fair. Com-B paper is entirely dependent on TA and discussion focuses exclusively on the 1 paper.
The lectures were a little bit dry. Toma isn't the most dynamic lecturer and she has just enough of an accent that I sometimes missed a sentence or two, BUT she is brilliant and will help you if you reach out to her.
Catalina was one of the best professors I ever had. She is one of the people carving the path in Computer Mediated Communication- so she really knows what she's talking about. If you go to lecture and take notes, the exams are fair and easy. One thing though- you MUST participate in class because she actually counts that for 15% of your grade.
Class material itself is interesting and relevant to everyday life. Tests are fair and appropriate, not easy but not too difficult if you fill out the study guides she posts. The Comm B aspect of the class was a different story. Written work grades entirely dependent on TA; mine gave useless feedback and always nitpicked, discussions semi-useless..
Amazing professor. Can tell she loves the subject. Her tests are difficult though
This is a great com B class. No need to buy the textbook or even read the articles she posts online. Just go to class and take good notes. Exams are easy A's, but your overall grade is completely dependent on your TA and how they grade your written work. I had a terrible TA (worst I've ever had) who couldn't speak English and still pulled off an AB
Prof. Toma is great. Her lectures are SOO interesting and it's definitely a great class to take for Com B credit. Her tests are straight forward, and she doesn't try to trick you. If you go to lecture and pay attention, you'll do well. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
Professor Toma is a brilliant woman and a fascinating teacher- just finished her PhD. Class is always interesting- she uses lots of visuals and video clips and always applies theory to real life situations. Funny and easy to talk to. Really well structured and organized course. HIGHLY recommended!
