Couldn't recommend enough. The BEST lecturer on CAMPUS and teaches a very interesting class. Declared RMI major bc/ of him. Also a great guy who is super experienced and cares a ton about his students. Graded solely on 3 tests, though they're open-note and based completely on lecture. Look forward to his class every week. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN.

I took RMI 300, 645 and 670 with Carl. He is the best professor I've had at UW. He's a very funny, not aloof, and cares that you learn relevant information. If you show up to class and pay attention you will get a decent grade. Some of the exams in the upper level classes are tough but as long as you put in a solid effort you'll do well.

Carl is a good lecturer who wants you to learn and not memorize everything. Although the grading is test heavy, the tests were easy and open note. I would recommend coming to lecture and studying. He doesn't always post slides and some test questions are specific to things mentioned in class. Only con is that he does not answer emails.

Pay attention in class and this is an easy A

I have taken 3 RMI classes with Carl. All classes have given me a lot of real world knowledge and were manageable in terms of exams (assuming you pay attention in class). Carl makes the material easy to digest and provides plenty of real world examples. Additionally, I highly recommend joining the RMIS club as a way to interact with upperclassmen

Very intriguing lectures and makes content enjoyable. Super helpful and kind guy. Content is put simply and as easy to understand as possible. Class is structured for the benefits of the students with no busy work, just learning. Highly recommend.

The absolute best professor I have had. Carl cares so much about all of his students and does his very best to make lectures as relevant to the real world as possible. Exams were hard, but I really loved the class and how much I learned.

Carl is genuinely one of the most caring as well as knowledgeable professors on campus. Even if you are not a business major, I would HIGHLY recommend taking this class. His lectures are so engaging it feels like you are just having a conversation. This is 100% the class I learned the most in this semester. Challenging but rewarding. Carl=GOAT

Really enjoyed this class. There were only 2 grades, a project and exam (all of were very reasonable and did not require a lot of time to prepare for) While he does not take attendance, I strongly encourage you to go to all of his lectures given how real world all of his content is (we covered a lot of breaches as they happened during the class)

Carl's lectures are very story-telling like and engaging. He's clearly passionate and knowledgeable. Kids ask questions, it's very seminar like and real-world based. We only had two graded things (exam and project), but they were fairly low stress. He brought in guest speakers and it was clear how the course content translated in the real world.

Awesome.

Very engaging. Looked forward to class every day. Curves tests and gives free points often. All tests were open notes and final was noncumulative. Would 1000% recommend this class.

Professor Barlett is amazing. He is SO available outside of class especially through RMI club which really helps connect any class material to any interests outside, even if you're not interested in declaring the major or minor. I really respect the way he values comprehension over terminology and memorization.

Carl is by far the best prof I have ever had. The amount of time he gives his students outside of class is crazy. He is well-networked and wants nothing more than to share the work ( and people) of risk with you. The class is test heavy but he does everything in his power to help you succeed- you just have to show up. Carl is THE BEST!!

Carl is an amazing professor who truly cares. He is available often outside of class and will always help you with a wide variety of questions, even if they are not related directly to RMI. He is extremely knowledgeable in his subject and his lectures were very engaging. I would highly recommend this course to ALL students, not just RMI majors!

Carl is an amazing professor who truly cares a lot about his students. He is extremely knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this course!!

The content is well connected with real world examples and it's very clear that coursework transfers in the field. Lectures include group work, is discussion heavy, and is powerpoint sparse. The class focuses on building skills in contract analysis, so exam prep is not about content as much as it's about participation through the semester.

Carl is an incredible lecturer. More than anything, probes students to critically think, working to ensure deep conceptual understanding of topics among his students. He is simply brilliant, and I feel immensely privileged to have been in his class, but bear the fortune of his network and dedication to the WSB risk program's development as well.

Carl is a great professor and one of the reasons the UW-Madion risk management program is so good at preparing students for success. RMI645 was my favorite RMI class at Madison and it felt like the exams were fair and exposed those did and didn't know the content. If you pay attention and participate in class, then the exams will be relatively easy

Seems like a genuine guy who wants to see his students do well. However, he does not use a textbook. While I do understand the topic of Risk Management is something that is ever-changing and not something as black and white as math. I feel like there should be some other resources besides slides for student to reference for basic definitions.

Charismatic and smart guy but his lectures are all over the place. Not much structure in his teaching and no real material to study off of for exams. I attended every lecture and still got a BC in his course which is supposedly an "easy" course. His past exams don't really help either. RMI645 is worse as there's no discussion classes.

If you just go to lecture, pay attention, and take notes, you easily pass the class. He's very interesting to listen to. Explains the material so clearly and uses a lot of examples. His lecture is fun and definitely not hard to sit through. I would add your discussion to your grade if you have the option and just show up to get a good grade.

I had Carl for three different classes, and he is incredibly talented at teaching students how to tackle real-world problems. Carl always tries to get to know you and will always connect with you outside of class. 645 will teach you how to solve complex situations and help you build a habit of breaking down these problems into smaller ideas.

The professor is great! I really enjoyed his class and I learned a lot. He did a really good job at explaining complicated topics and is overall a great professor. This class was really interesting and applicable to the business world. Would definately reccomend!

RMI 670 was such a useful class and learned so much! As a business student, I found that the material was really applicable to what is going on in the business world since it is an area that is impacting so many industries and corporations. The material was applicable to real-world situations and events which I thought was really cool!

Carl is a very nice guy who knows all his students by name. The exams are tricky watch out for the wording and there is no textbook. Make sure to sign up for ta sections to get the extra points.

Carl is a great lecturer. If you participate in class to stay engaged and put in the necessary time to review, his exams are very fair. Would definitely take again.

Carl is an exceptional professor & person, and invests in the professional success of his students by helping develop critical thinking skills. While attendance is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged as he provides real-world examples in lecture that solidify difficult concepts. He is very willing to help students in and outside the classroom.

Carl is a GREAT GUY who definitely has a lot to offer. This class is difficult if you don't have any industry experience, he does make lectures interesting- but his exams are EXTREMELY difficult to study for since there is no textbook and the slides are just questions (the answers aren't usually posted)

This class is the best class I took my freshman year by far. The lectures are engaging, Carl is hilarious, and he truly wants to see his students succeed. I recommend recommend that everyone (all years and majors) takes this class as you'll find that RMI is related to pretty much everything and it's just an all-around good time!

Carl is amazing and one of my favorite RMI professors. He's passionate about what he's teaching and cares about getting to know his students. Even if you're not an RMI major/in the business school, I'd really recommend taking his cyber risk class.

Carl is the GOAT of RMI. I'd recommend it to any business major because the topics are pretty foundational and useful for any discipline. Very smart, very funny, very personable.

took this class as a comp sci major having never taken any rmi or business courses. this man is a gem i would recommend this class and carl to anybody

Carl is an all-around great guy, and I really wish I would've put more effort into this course! He's great at explaining concepts and answering questions as needed, and he keeps in touch with his TA's very well so there is no misinformation. He posts a lot of extra office hours around exams and is super easy to communicate with.

For my first in-person semester at UW, Carl was a fantastic professor who not only knows his stuff, but makes the content intriguing and exciting to learn. The only con was with the lack of textbook, a lot of the notes and test information are derived from the lectures so if you don't listen, you won't pass (RMI 300).

Best lectures you'll ever have. He does go on tangents, so what's covered in class won't be exactly what's on the slides. You're going to have to go to class because of this, but you're going to want to anyways. This was my first upper level RMI course and it was my first class on Monday. Still, it managed to be my favorite class this semester.

I have taken both RMI 640 and 645 with Carl and I would gladly take another class. While the class material may seem boring while reading the description, the class is not. The skills and knowledge you will take away from the class will help you be successful all your life.

I literally made an account to give Carl a review. He is the best professor I've had thus far at Madison. His lectures have so much energy, he honestly cares about students' learning, and is super approachable and relatable. The content is tough, and going to lecture is a must, but you won't want to miss his lectures anyways.

Carl is one of the most engaging professors I have had. He's extremely knowledgable on the topics he teaches and he knows how to keep the lecture engaging. He's hilarious and very inspirational. He's also very personable, understanding, and always willing to help you outside of class time to ensure you're successful.

Carl is a great teacher who is very knowledgeable about topics that affect you for the rest of your life. He relates the content back to real life situations and presents information in engaging and enthusiastic ways so attending class and listening to lectures in person never feels like a chore.

Carl is an exceptional professor that genuinely cares not only about the material, but the success and futures of his students. Attending the lectures and actively listening and participating in class and office hours will yield you a high grade. He does a great job covering the material and relating the content back to the big picture.

Do not take this class if you dont care. If you show up to every lecture it is hard to not receive at least a B, if you care enough to listen and participate an A is easy.

Carl is the best professor I've had at Madison. He makes a class that I wasn't excited for into something I genuinely look forward to attending every week. He is personable, fun and a great lecturer. The class is by no means easy, but Carl does everything possible to help students succeed. Discussions are optional but worth going to!

Would recommend Carl to everyone who want to learn more about risk. He is supper passionate and cares about all his students. Even though the class was taken online, he recorded new videos and gave live lectures. He also adjusts the course materials to accommodate most students' need. The material is applicable to real world and useful.

He was very knowledgeable, but had a tough time reading the room and was unwilling to adapt his teaching style to conform to online learning conditions. He also got my previous review removed, which is telling.

The class is extremely applicable to real life, and I would recommend it to every RMI major as an elective. Carl is one of the most interesting lecturers at Madison, and he truly cares about his class well-being. Grading wasnt overly easy or difficult, but the content was very high level. Overall 10/10 recommend to all interested in cyber risk.

Carl doesn't stick to lecturing out of a text book, instead he uses his real world experience to benefit the whole class. He tells stories to relate concepts in class to an application. His tests and presentations are more than just looking through notes, you have to be able to conceptualize the topic to do well. His lectures are the best.

Going over commercial insurance contracts sounds very boring. Carl is probably the only person I know who could make it fun. He's extremely energetic. He does tend to go on tangents a lot, but they are usually relevant and/or fun to hear about. It's a pretty easy class in general, and Carl's always happy to help. Just reach out to him. He's cool.

Carl's passion for teaching is clearly displayed through his classes. Despite his course being lecture heavy, he always encourages class participation which makes time fly by and gives students a more thorough understanding of the material. If you're not excited about the course to begin with, you will be by the end of the semester.

Carl is clearly very passionate about his job, and he enjoys seeing his students engaged in class. He isn't afraid to call on you in class if he knows your name (or even if he doesn't but you are nodding along / clearly paying attention in class). Super friendly guy and pretty easy class. He's also available outside of class if you are struggling.

Carl is a fantastic professor, and is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. His lectures are engaging and he is always full of energy. I highly recommend this class; even as a non-business school student it has given me a strong foundation in risk management that will be very valuable in my career.

The first time I had him, I was going through big stress and Carl helped me pass the class when I was clearly having trouble amidst being depressed and busy. For RMI 640, we had to switch online due to COVID-19. Carl is the only professor I had this semester that successfully taught me something after switching formats for this. Fantastic.

Super enthusiastic about teaching his classes. I had him for RMI 300 and enjoyed the class a lot. He does a great job of engaging students. If students in class are stuck on a certain concept, he makes sure to slow down and explain it until people understand. Great guy!

Very funny and explains concepts well. Carl is very passionate about the content matter and it shows.

Carl is great professor. Very enthusiastic and genuinely wanted to help his students. There were a few assignments that if you go into office hours for, you'll do well. Exams were applications based on lecture. No textbook or readings, but go to lecture because that is all the content. He's great though.

Carl is a fantastic teacher and overall human being. He cares so genuinely about his students, and actively seeks out their ability to achieve success both within the classroom and after graduation. The simulation he holds towards the end of the semester is a great indicator of real-world expertise and I am so glad to have this knowledge!

Carl is the GOAT. You need to stay engaged during lectures to pass, but he makes it easy with his energy and passion. He's available outside of class to help with coursework, career options, etc. He's responsible for directing me towards every job offer I received my senior year. I wish a 6/5 was possible.

My only complaint is someone was stupid enough not to rate this man as a 5. Carl is a great guy and a better teacher. His classes sound boring, they're not, because he's the one that teaches them

Carl is one of the best professors I have ever taken. He challenges you and truly believes it's important to prepare you for the real world. There isn't a lot of work outside of class, and each lecture is really engaging.

Professor Barlett is fantastic! I took RMI 300 as an elective course for the business certificate and absolutely loved it. His lectures are really engaging and you can tell Carl cares a lot about his students - for example, even if it's a 300 person lecture, he definitely knows your name. Class content was really interesting too!

Love this professor and this class! He's engaging and clearly cares about his students. If you go to lecture and take notes, you'll do fine on the tests (MC + short answer). The class structure allows a lot of opportunity to do well - he weighs the midterm you do best on the heaviest and you can get an easy 5% boost from opting into discussion.

Carl was my favorite professor in the entire business school. He really cares about his students and puts so much effort into the course. RMI 640 is not an easy class and you almost certainly will not do well if you do not come to lecture. That being said, if you find the content enjoyable and/or are willing to work hard, you can get an A.

Carl is a great professor. His lectures are thought-provoking and engaging. He cares deeply about his students and is willing to discuss matters outside of the classroom. While his classes are challenging, they are well worth it for the knowledge you gain that applies to much more than just insurance. Take a class with him if given the chance!!!

He really knows what hes talking about and moves all around the room during lecture and keeps a high energy level during class

Good lecturer and really knows what hes talking about. The book serves as a good starting point but the lecture is where the value is. The simulation is a ton of fun! You essentially run an insurance company at the end of the semester and compete against others in the class.

Carl is by far my favorite professor. He cares so much about his students and is always willing to meet outside of class. His lectures are so fun and you are actually learning the material, not just memorizing it. The class is interactive and participation helps with learning and your grade. Carl is great and really wants his students to succeed.

Carl is one of my absolute favorite professors of all time! He is brilliant, enthusiastic, and always willing to help students with both class material and career advice. He focuses on material that is relevant for real life, and his classes are really valuable for anyone going into business. I wish I could take more classes with him!

Carl is incredibly energetic and intelligent. He has so much knowledge that he loves sharing with students. He also cares a great deal about students' understanding of content and their academic and professional development. He does talk a lot and is particular about how people answer questions so those can be challenges.

Cares about his students and is enthusiastic while teaching. Gives students material to think about which is applicable in the "real world". Helps students succeed by working through difficult problems in class, encourages collaboration with other students for peer teaching. Very intelligent and makes his students feel comfortable asking questions

Carl really cares about his students. He is very hyper while teaching but very intelligent. If you take the time to talk to him, he will help you and go extra lengths to check in and make sure that you're doing well. His tests are all about 'real-world' scenarios they are incredibly useful. Overall great guy and great professor.
