I thought Professor Bloch was super passionate about this topic and the lectures were really enjoyable, although attendance was mandatory. Sometimes I felt like the grading was a little harsh, he doesn't seem to give out 100s at all.
Professor Bloch is genuinely caring and an incredible history professor! He organizes the contest of his History 201: Weimar Republic class by themes and topic rather than chronologically, which helps create organic connections. The course walks you through your final term paper. Also super funny. Would highly recommend!
History 120 with Prof. Bloch was a lovely time! The class will lean a little bit more into German history than other countries as that is his area of expertise, but other than that you can expect a variety of topics and countries covered, as well as important lessons on colonialism in Africa and Asia. It's a great class for freshmen.
Amazing professor, who cares about his students and is passionate about what he teaches! The course is interesting and allows you to learn many interesting topics. In discussion sections you just need to complete the discussion post before class and participate. Mid term is allows you to bring a page of notes and well as the final, you'll do great!
Bloch is such an engaging prof and clearly cares about his students. He is very clearly passionate about what he teaches, but doesn't expect students to memorize all content. He's more focused on analyzing sources and contextualizing information. Pay attention, participate, do your readings and you'll be fine!
I truly loved taking this class. Bloch is a wonderful professor and honestly one of the most intelligent people I've ever met in my life. This class is super easy but that's only if you actually pay attention for...most of the lectures. There are two papers, a midterm and a final. None were super difficult and I really liked the TAs as well.
Clearly passionate about his class, and very caring
Bloch's class has definitely been one of my best gen eds. The bulk of your grade are two essays plus a midterm and final. The essays aren't bad (neither longer than 5-6 pages) and you get a one-sided sheet of notes for both exams (both are written exams). If you just take a day to lock in for the exams you'll be good even if you don't take notes.
Prof Bloch was clearly passionate about what he was teaching. He genuinely cared about everyone in the class, and he kept his class as engaging as possible.
Gets to know students' names even though there's 120+ people in the class. Attendance is mandatory, but he's an excellent lecturer. Lots of reading but I really only read the one's I found interesting and I still did fine.
I really enjoyed his class, I never skipped a class because of how much I enjoyed him and the content. He is very engaging and even takes the time to know each and every one of his 120+ students. I would take another class of his. There are two essays, so get ready to read a primary source (book) for these essays.
Bloch is a very passionate prof, he is interested in what he's sharing with you! This course is a good beginning for anyone interested in history.
Prof Bloch is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. He cares about his students and makes an effort to learn everyones name. Lectures can be heavy at times but Prof Bloch does a great job at answering questions and explaining things clearly.
Prof. Bloch cares a lot about the class, as he gives interesting lectures that he definitely enjoys talking about. Show up to class because attendance and participation isn't "mandatory" but a significant part of the grade. I'd recommend HIST 120 and any course taught by Prof. Bloch to anyone.
i thought he was great! lectures were engaging and the assignments kept me on track. offered a letter of recommendation as well
I took this class because I enjoyed the material. He made me no longer enjoy history.
Prof. Bloch is a great lecturer who clearly knows a lot about the subject he teaches. His class was extremely lecture heavy but he makes them entertaining. If you like history definitely take a class with him. There were only a handful of assignments that were graded very fairly.
Prof Bloch is a great professor who is very knowledgeable on the subject. He elaborates a lot on the slides. The readings can be quite long for section but there's not too many of them. This class is one of my favorites and I would 100% take another one of Prof Bloch's classes.
Professor Bloch is an amazing lecturer. This class was organized perfectly for students with a great balance of independence and professor feedback. The lectures very content heavy but given in a very simple fashion. Bloch is a very educated guy with great insight on history!
His lecture is structured not like traditional history chronologically, rather, he breaks down materials according to different aspect of Weimar society. Such design definitely help me better understand the social norms and movements at that period, instead of mixing irreverent events just because they happened in the same year. Knowledgeable.
He cares about the material. Thats where the postive review ends.
Professor was unclear about specific gradings. Had the entire semester to do two essays, yet would not give feedback prior. Would not recommend.
I adored Bloch and His120. His lectures were extremely fulfilling as he is passionate, well-spoken and knowledgeable. He was clear and eloquent in every point he made. His energy is endearing and warm. He's funny and gives great feedback. Take His 120 whether you like history or not. I wish he would teach every course at this school.
I really enjoyed class with him; he learns everyone's name and is super accessible outside of class. Lectures are always engaging, with interesting content. Around 30% of your grade is simply attending lectures and participating in discussion sections. If you are looking for a history course which is not too much work overall, I highly recommend.
Really great professor. Incredibly passionate about the subject and takes the time to learn everyone's name in lecture. Brings a kind of goofy/nerdy and always upbeat personality to lectures which helps break up any boring bits or just general early morning grogginess. I'd take any class offered that he's teaching.
I really like him as a professor. Provides very interesting lectures, and you should go to class bc TopHat is used for participation. He makes an effort to learn everyone's name and there is participation and discussion during lectures. Midterm and final expectations are very reasonable. He is also very easy to talk to. Highly recommend!
I felt that Professor Bloch is a nice guy who puts a lot of effort into his class and really does care about each individual student, however, he grades extremely tough. Granted, he gives great feedback on each paper, but even when the vast majority of feedback was positive I found I was receiving lower grades than expected based on said feedback.
He's incredible knowledgeable about the European political climate from world War II and after. Its a mix of intellectual and political history,. You can tell he has a real passion for the focus of his field and its endearing to witness. Approachable and eloquent.
Great teacher! Super nice and approachable, and his lectures were very engaging. Took time to get to know everyone's name in our lecture.
I absolutely loved this class! Professor Bloch was a super engaging professor and I looked forward to going to his class. Could not recommend more.
Professor Bloch is a really great guy and I really enjoyed his class. While the lectures could be dense at times he did his best to make them as engaging and interesting as possible. Prof Bloch clearly cares for his students and made a big effort in trying to learn the names of everyone in my lecture.
By far the best Prof I've had here. He's super passionate about the content and is extremely helpful when it comes to papers. A class you genuinely want to go to. Could not recommend more.
I absolutely adore this professor! He's extremely passionate about what he teaches and makes an effort to get to know every student. His lectures are a little long and but he tries to make it as interesting and engaging as possible. He has a great personality overall and I would definitely take another class of his just for his teaching.
Great professor. One of the best I have ever had. Very passionate on what he teaches and just a great teacher.
I have taken two classes with Prof Bloch and both have been amazing! He really cares about his students and he is so helpful when it comes to writing research papers. He knows a lot about the field and he is so passionate when lecturing. He is definitely one of my favorite professors at UW and I highly recommend him to everyone!
Professor Bloch is a GEM. He is insanely passionate about what he teaches and my classmates and I absolutely adore him. In my History 120 lecture of around 80 students, he made an effort to learn everyones name Lectures can feel pretty long, but he makes them super interesting and interactive.
Professor Bloch is very flexible and he really wants you to succeed. Lectures aren't very dense and easily digestible. Class mainly revolves around discussing that lecture's assigned reading. A decent amount of reading but that's to be expected for a class that revolves around historical research. Professor Bloch is a great I highly recommend him!
