Incredible! Deep, thorough, and colorful lecture slides worthy of a textbook. Complex, original, and rewarding homework problems which I now genuinely miss. Lengthy and generous office hours. But be ready to study! His quarter is apparently hardest among all the PhD classes, and it seems like the undergrad version, ECON 521, isn't much easier.
Ben was great. I find it stunning that a comment about wishing ill upon someone (like a miscarriage) is taken so lightly. The comment below a few months was flagged and passed review - unbelievable! This suggests that ratemyprofessors is really not a serious about flagging and has no serious review.
Econ 521 is a difficult class with tricky concepts, and it was tough to get everything from the lectures. But Professor Bernard gives excellent office hours where he goes through strategies and examples in detail. He genuinely wants to help students learn as long as you make the effort. This class is super interesting - would definitely recommend.
Professor Bernard was one of my favorite professors in my time at Madison. The lectures are not required per se, but attendance is necessary to success. While complex and fast, the lectures were always interesting and Ben did a great job to develop problem solving skills and high levels of perseverance through difficult but interesting homework.
Ben is available to students who couldn't make his office hours. This course WILL require all of your time if you're undergrad/master's student wanting to apply to grad school. Ben's slides are pretty much entirely self-contained, if you are missing something for homework, you can almost always find it in his slides. Great new prof to theory.
Ben is a GREAT professor! He goes too fast, but is VERY accessible outside of class and offers a lot of help. Definitely go to his office hours!! Homework is hard, but also engaging and fun. I wouldn't recommend it to undergrads or masters students, as keeping up with the material is almost a full time job, but that is the nature of a PhD class.
Ben is one of THE BEST instructors EVER. Examples and problem sets were very thought provoking and with high real world applicability (AND challenging). Definitely recommend Ben!
Ben's a great lecturer who's sometimes too fast for his own good. His problem sets are challenging but rewarding once you figure them out. His exam was extremely tough but fair. You need to put the work in, and you will be rewarded by developing an understanding that allows you to engage with modern research in microeconomic theory.
My class was the first he taught at UW, so there were certainly bugs to be worked out, but he is so so passionate about the material and it really shows. Homeworks are creative, his slides are really well made, and he is really easy to reach for help. The course is certainly difficult, but I really feel like I learned a lot. Great professor!
Ignore the despicable comments below from the snowflakes who didn't want to put the work in to succeed. Ben is hilarious, and his lectures are thoughtful and well-organized. He often went too fast, but made himself available in office hours for clarification. Problem sets were challenging and rewarding. We all love Ben Bernard!
The psets are challenging, but they do force you to learn a lot. The test was long, and required lots of thinking. Would not recomend to an undergrad/master wanting to apply to grad school, unless you feel crazy confortable with the material. When teaching improves (decrease speed, define concepts, write larger) then it will be a fantastic class.
