Fine, not amazing. Sped through lectures, topics were introduced once and the next time they showed up were on an exam. He was nice and responsive. Take advtg of EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM you have available before the tests (3 inc final). I'm a math person and the course was really hard. You need to study WAY more than you think you do!!!!
An great professor! Therere three exams during a semester, which take up 84% of the grade. Although it seems difficult, the programs in the tests are similar to the homework and he will give us review problems before midterms. And there are also a lot of practice exams in canvas, which is useful. If you do the practice, this will be an easy course
Exams are a large part of the grade (3 exams, 28% each), but exam content is straightforward and well-covered in lecture. Weekly quizzes. Professor Street talks and writes quickly, so it can be easy to get lost, but the lectures overall were very helpful. He closely follows the textbook, so textbook examples were useful while preparing for exams.
3 tests at 28% each make up majority of your grade, so luckily Brian does a great job of preparing you, giving problems and topic lists of almost everything exactly that will be on the exam. Focus on understanding every lecture problem example, rather than the tedious worksheet and homework problems, and do every practice test available, easy A.
He is one of the most egocentric and arrogant people on this planet. I was 1% off from passing this class and he gave no sympathy. He also makes fun of people for asking questions in the lectures and makes it a very unwelcoming learning environment.
Pretty good at explaining concepts, he just talks and writes very quickly so can be easy to get lost depending on the topic. 3 exams each worth 28% of grade, not too hard but need to put in some studying before each of you want an A and its easy to screw up your grade with exams. Somewhat condescending with questions in lecture, not too big a deal
Calc 3 is a hard class regardless of which professor you choose, but Professor Street's lectures made the material more accessible. Sometimes for the sake of time, he'll simplify an example down to a calc 1 problem or a problem from earlier in the course, rather than finish the example. Quizzes in discussion every week, and 3 exams each worth 28%
Professor Street is a very straightforward professor. He teaches the material well, assigns homework to consolidate what he taught you, and gives extremely fair exams and quizzes. His class does not require too much work. Exams are weighted quite a bit, but they are super fair as he often gives extremely similar practice problems beforehand.
Professor Street is one of the worst dudes I have ever had to listen to. He talks extremely fast and goes through examples too quickly. He is not helpful over email and does not care very much about his students. When he is paired with a hard class like Calc 3, it is game over. This was the most I have struggled with, and part of that was on me.
Lectures going through content very quickly and doesn't spend much time explaining steps of how to solve problems unless somebody asks for an explanation. If you don't already have a decent understanding of topics before lecture you'll get lost frequently. Seems arrogant which is annoying at times Tests are very fair if you understand content.
Street is definitely a bit arrogant, because he is a great professor and he knows it. His grades (on the same exams as the other Math 234 profs) are higher for a reason. The grade is made 84% on exams (which is universal for Math 234), but Street prepares his students for these (better than any other prof I've heard of). Take this class with him.
Professor Street is one of the best professors I have had so far. He does a good job of balancing teaching topics while also leaving room for students to learn on their own. He weeds out students who do not put in the proper effort the class. Sometimes he is bad at answering questions in lecture, but it is nothing the textbook can't answer.
Brian Street is an awful professor. I had him Fall 2021 for Math 234. The course is difficult but Street makes it worse. The grading policy is horrible (there was an exam where I got a question right and 0/20 points). Went to office hours once and left in tears. This guy is bad. If you can avoid him, do.
I didn't like him much at first. By the end he was my favorite professor. While tests are worth a lot of your grade, they are very fair and straight forward. At the beginning I can see how people would say he's condescending, but that's not really the case he just has an intimidating tone of voice. He would give reviews in lecture before exams too!
A great professor who is clear in his lectures if you understand the content previously taught. He will always offer explanations if someone needs it. Can switch well between advanced abstract, and slower example based approaches for students with different learning methods.
Personally, I had already took calc 3 in high school, but I did very poorly so it was good to take the class again. This, however, was a mistake. Professor Street likes to word vomit during lectures and when questions are asked, he answers them in a very condescending way. Also the tests are very heavy and there are only 6 questions per exam.
Incredibly condescending to students, and like many others have said, he often calls these concepts easy or simple as if we should intuitively understand what we don't know. The exams which account for 84% of your grade are incredibly unforgiving. I tried to find his office hours, just to find out he doesn't do office hours... Not a fan.
Brian Street does not answer questions in lectures and almost makes students feel bad for asking. He often makes quick phrases on how things are easy or simple. The order of introducing content is odd as well, often leaving the students around me scratching their heads in lectures. Tests are pretty similar to homework though.
Hes a fine teacher and I think his lecture examples are great but his personality is awful. The rudest and most condescending professor I have ever had, essentially calls kids stupid for asking questions.
84% of your grade is exams. Each exam is about 6 questions. Very frustrating. I find his lectures to be almost discouraging, he'll say "and then you do this simple integral" and I don't understand it, if it's so easy just do it. Wish that we did half the examples but went more in depth.
Professor Street is hands down the WORST professor I have ever had, or teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Not only does he humiliate students when they answer questions in big lectures (leaving the entire class to laugh) but also is the least helpful teacher for this hard class. If you have any chance at all, take a different professor.
One of the most stuck up professors I have ever had. Condescending, arrogant, and does not explain material well at all. Went to his office hours and he made me cry. Stay far away
Prof Street is one of the worst professors I have had at Madison. Not only does he basically read a script of the textbook during lectures, but he ridicules his students when they ask questions. HIs only form of communication is piazza, and he is always passive aggressive and rude. I had him for calc 1 and he was fine but for calc 3 he is atrocious
Really good prof, if you show up and pay attention you will do well. Exams are hard but extremely fair
Passionate, knowledgeable, and cares about students despite class being online & asynchronous. This was my first time doing calculus & Professor Street made it very straight forward.
Great professor, seemed to care even though it was a completely online asynchronous class
Hands down the best professor you will probably have throughout your freshman year. 10/10 would love to take his class again. He made online lectures really easy to understand and would provide multiple in depth videos explaining concepts and different types of problems. Responds quickly to students even with asynchronous lessons. You won't regret
He was great at communicating what was expected during this online semester. The tests were easy if you participated and completed the out of class work. He was forgiving and flexible with grades.
Excellent teacher. I had him during fall 2020 covid, which is why he may've been so lenient (a vast majority of students got As). Very good at communicating with students, fair exams, and all around the most helpful math teacher I've had.
Professor Street is clear and understandable when it comes to Calculus. He makes seemingly complicated concepts simple by breaking it down into steps and is receptive to student concerns. Definitely cares about his students and works well with the TAs, making for a fair course to take if you are willing to put in the work.
Overall, he was a great teacher, but he sometimes overcomplicates things in his video lectures. I recommend attending his 221 class online. Exams were not proctored, but had a written component where you would have to show your work. In these, I had to write clearly what I do (e.g. state usage of a particular theorem or method of evealuation)
Mr. Brian is THE BEST of the best. He out-done everyone when it comes to transitioning to online learning. He is so organized and he puts out lectures that are very high in quality. Long story short, he made Calc1 a breeze. I never even had to go to youtube to learn something. Not to mention that he is so fare with the grading. Hands-down the best
Professor Street is the choice for Math 221. He sends out emails frequently and also responds quickly on Piazza to address any problems. Lectures are actually explaining concepts, not reading the problems. He is also surprisingly enthusiastic for an intro class like Math221.
For the online format, Street provided asynchronous lecture videos. I thought the videos were very good (I had taken AP Calc AB in high school though as well). The videos were to the point, explained well, and provided lots of example problems that you did for yourself.
Professor Street was absolutely phenomenal. For someone who has never taken Calculus before, I came into this class expecting the worst and came out very well versed and not nearly as stressed as I thought I would be. He was fantastic at explaining concepts, the most organized professor I have ever had, and was seriously above and beyond.
Brian is great at explaining things and his lectures are very helpful. His lectures are asynchronous and are very concise, usually less than 25 minutes. His course is well organized and he provides weekly schedules to keep you on track. Tests tend to be easier than the discussion handouts and are only 3-5 questions.
um he def pays for bots to thumbs down every negative review.
The first math class I took when I entered university is taught by Brian. He is the best math professor I have ever met (I took roughly 5 math classes.). Fun lectures and capturing the important points for you. Even with some complicated concepts, he can explain with easy-understanding example.
There are weekly tets however they are 3-5 questions and focus on the material of the week before. Discussions are worth 1 point of participation for the entire semester so very optional. Highly recommend Brian, his lectures are easy to follow and they are prerecorded.
Good overall, definitely could have gotten a worse calc prof. I'm not the best at math in the first place so I thought it was hard. I never really understood what was happening and still got a B. I guess Brian's teaching method stuck with me subconsciously.
I already took calc in high school, but if I wouldn't have, I would have absolutely no idea what was going on in that class. He overcomplicated simple concepts. He wasn't approachable and gave off a very serious vibe. I could tell he cared about his students, but that was enough to make up for his poor teaching methods.
Brian is a great professor and he definitely knows his field extremely well. Just go to lectures, which are amazing, and do what he tells you to then you can handle calculus easily.
Very nice guy. Quiz every week(can drop2) teaches slowly and clearly. real exam will be similar to the practice one! You will not regret choosing him!!
Professor Street is an amazing professor but I came into this class with prior calc knowledge and during lecture I was confused often. However, his explanations are helpful but quick. Although the problems in class are difficult, they are similar to exams. DO ALL PRACTICE EXAMS and you will earn an A. He also does not curve this class.
Brian was a great professor - he explained everything clearly with lots of examples, communicated grading standards clearly, and the exams always matched what we were taught in class. Take advantage of classes before exams - he usually will review the material you'll need to know!
I really liked how he taught class. First, He uses an ipad instead of the chalkboards which made it easier to read his handwriting. And second, he is quite funny and snarky. Made me laugh many times throughout class. His tests and quizzes are very fair with some review beforehand. A great choice if you've already taken Calc 1 and are in Math 221.
I didn't complete any extra work to do well in this class, but came in with prior calc knowledge. He teaches as if you already know the material and are just reviewing it. It isn't mandatory to go to class but it helps if you want to do well on tests. Though he has limited office hours, he is very approachable and kind.
Professor Street is just ok. He's not all that good at explaining concepts to the class, but the 3-4 that he did a good job on he absolutely nailed. The material isn't all that difficult and it's a fair level of homework. The grading for each exam is also completely fair, too. If you take a class with him as a professor, you may want a tutor.
I loved Professor Street! His calc 221 lectures largely consisted of him providing examples of what we were just taught which was really helpful for me. He is a fairly engaging prof and I definitely laughed a few times during class. The exams were also fair and only tested us on material discussed in class.
The best math professor I have ever met! He explains every single concepts clearly and his lecture is just so comfortable to follow. Professor Street is without a doubt a genius in Math, and just do everything he tells you and you'll get an A. Moreover, he is such a kind guy. Highly recommended! Great professor
Really liked having Prof Street for Math 221. He explained things clearly and slowly during lecture and always threw in some sassy/sarcastic comments at people which I enjoyed. You can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to do well. The tests weren't very difficult as long as you show up to lecture and take some time to prepare.
Professor Street was a very good professor. I had not had any experience with calculus before his class, and he made learning the material easy. Tests were worth 75% of the grade, but were very fair. He is also funny at times and really wants the students to do well. Just study, do all of the assignments, and this class should be a breeze.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD!!! Does not go over concepts well, does not explain topics in enough detail, very difficult to read his handwriting, does not prepare you well enough for quizzes or exams. I have always been accelerated when it comes to math and was even a math tutor for two years and I failed the final... AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!
There are tons of students who have taken calculus before that take calculus 1 and they like to ask really dumb questions like "Can we use l'hospital's rule?" starting day 1. Prof Street was really sarcastic, hilarious and explained topics well. Lecture will make you feel unprepared because the problems are harder than the tests. A is easy just try
Prof Street was very passionate about Calc and using enthusiasm made lectures fun. Great guy and presents the material in amazing ways and then takes time to make sure everyone understand the information. 10/10 recommend taking for Calc 1!!
I would not recommend Brian for math 221 if you have not previously taken calc. He talks and writes at a very fast pace, and a lot of times his writing is very difficult to read. He is always asking if anyone has questions, although his answers to questions are sometimes a bit snarky. He also thinks everyone is at his same level as far knowledge.
I would recommend him in a heartbeat. Great explanations, always aware of how the class is doing on things. SUPER fair individual. Constantly asking if we have any questions. Super nice individual. Just beware of his snarkiness. Listen to his explanations because they are key. It's easier to just write what he says that try to read his handwriting
Review, then you can get good grades.
He is a very good lecturer and he really makes sure you know the material plus he is hilarious would 10/10 take a class with him again
Brian Street is a smart dude. That being said, he acts as if everyone is on the same level as him. If you decide to take this class with Brian, make sure you have already taken calculus. Otherwise you will be confused perpetually like I was. It has been a frustrating semester for me with him as my prof. Also, his Ta's are not effective.
Brian is a really good prof. You can tell he actually cares about what you learn. However, he tends to sip over a lot of explanations that he forgets we need to hear. He is pretty good about answering all questions though.
Need to do well on the tests, however he is a great professor
By far the best lecturer I've ever had, don't be lazy and the class will be enjoyable.
Sassy. Liked the blue eyed brown eyed island people thing on the last day of class lmao
Tests can get to be a little difficult with him, but overall he is energized for his lectures and is always willing to help you before or after class. I took calculus in high school before so that helped me a lot, but in general Brian goes into a lot of detail when explaining concepts. He respects and really cares for his students.
Prof Street is an excellent teacher. His lectures are interactive and he looks for feedback from the students on how they are doing. I especially liked how he had students do example problems in class. He conveys material very clearly, but doesn't go into an incredible amount of depth. Overall a great experience.
Brian Street was a pretty solid professor for math 221. He kind of speaks quickly during lectures, so make sure you pay attention. He explains things really well but if you ask a question during class, he won't go into much detail. Most of the help I got was from my TA during office hours.
Pretty typical math teacher, you have to pay attention or you could miss a whole topic
Prof. Street was an okay teacher. He usually explained things in the most difficult way possible, but if you have a Calculus background, you'll be fine. He seemed to get annoyed when people asked questions.
Professor Street was really great. He is definitely the professor you want for 221.
Great professor with easier tests, also great lectures
great lecturer and does a good job making the class participate in lecture without calling people out. Very clear with his explanations. Homework is a little tough. I took APAB calc in high school so this class was not as hard for me as it might have been for someone who has never taken calc before. Overall awesome experience with him!
I really think Brian was a great math professor. The lectures can get boring, and he moves through material pretty quickly. The exams count for the main portion of your grade. The first exam was extremely easy, while the second was very difficult.
He's great!!
Prof. Street was an absolutely phenomenal teacher of my first-semester calculus class. His examples are easy to understand and his lectures are engaging!
He's awesome
Really great lecturer. Gives lots of examples and plenty of opportunities to ask questions in class. Homework was very time consuming but but graded very easily. Tests were easy, especially since he devoted a lot of lecture time to reviewing and handed out lists of topics to review for each exam.
He's pretty good
He's one of the better math teachers.
Helpful and casual. There's homework to be done but it's not overbearing.
Brian is the best prof you could ask for in Math. The material was presented very clearly, and the tests were very fair. The two midterms are easy, and the final is more challenging but curved. If you pay attention in lecture you will have no problem in this class with prof Street.
Professor Street's lectures were perfectly clear, and he always told us what he expected everyone to know for the exams. Therefore, the class was not overly difficult. If you study what he goes through in his review lecture, you will do fine on the exam. The only complaint is that he isn't overly excited to help you out of class.
Brian is a very clear-cut lecturer and lays out what will be given on each test. One of the best math teachers in the department. He does tend to talk really fast and it can be hard to follow along in lectures for that reason. Overall fantastic professor; would recommend for calc 3.
BEST professor in the math department. Very clear on what he expects. Reasonable amount of homework. Not trying to trick you. Clear in lecture. Answers questions. Loves what he does. Very chill. Tests are very fair. Homework can be difficult, but you learn a lot. Graded homework for correctness. Goes through examples in lecture rather than proofs.
Gives clear lectures. He gives a list of everything that will be on each exam so you know what to study. Exams are straightforward for the most part. There are 6-7 questions, each worth 10 points, with one usually being more tricky than the rest. First unit on vectors was confusing not taking any other calculus classes at UW.
Brian is a great lecturer and conveys the material in a very clear manner. Exams are a reflection of his lectures and the homework, so generally if you pay attention the exam should be easy. Exams are curved too and the final is noncumulative. One of the best math professors I've had.
I really enjoyed Street as a professor. He was an extremely logical professor and very clearly organized the course and laid out his expectations. Lectures are hard to follow because they are really theoretical, but he clearly lays out what will be on exams during his review in lecture. Street was a great professor and it wasn't a very hard class.
Professor Street is a fantastic teacher. He gives clear explanations and helps visualize abstract ideas. After almost every point he makes he asks if there are any questions. Before exams he gives you a list of topics that will pretty much be the exact topics on the exam. He also does review problems that are very helpful. Get this guy if you can!
Highly recommend. At first, he can seem overwhelming, but after a couple weeks you realize what a good professor he actually is. He explains clearly and uses plenty of examples, and the exams are easy since he gives you a sheet of exactly what kinds of questions are going to be on it. I hope to take another class with him.
Really clear and concise teacher. The best thing about him is that before every exam he gives you a piece of paper with what you will need to know for the exam, and all of the questions are almost directly off the examples in class. Best prof I've had
He is a ver knowledgable math professor and definitely knows what he is talking about. However, he goes through those materials too fast on lectures and we hardly can follow him. The homework and lectures are way harder than what are on midterms.
the lecture is really clear with many examples. great professor !!
TALKS TOO FAST. I'm not kidding when I say even the speed transcriber sometimes couldn't follow his speed. He does gives time for students to ask questions, but most of the time students couldn't ask one cuz they are still chewing on what he just said! Tests are fair, really don't enjoy his lecture. P.S He doesn't erase the bboard clearly
Seriously a fantastic professor - one of the best I've had. It was one of the hardest classes I've taken, but I enjoyed every bit of it. If you have a chance, take any class with him!
275 was the hardest class I've ever taken. By far. Don't take it unless you're into abstract mathematics and proof-writing is a passion. I never understood the material, and failed both midterms and the final. However, Brian was understanding about how difficult calculus proof-writing is, and gave the whole class an A. So, I love him.
Brian's lecture notes were verbatim from the book. There was no added value in attending the lectures. Also, he insisted on not having office hours. That was weird.
Very clear in lecture, however exams often did not test what was taught. Overall an okay professor, exams are very difficult though.
Although without any doubt he was clear and explained alot. But he screwed up the fun of Math 234. His tests were out of the world, his grading was strict as anything. Either you get 0 or 10 out of 10. Tests were all about proving, he made Math 222 look easier which is actually a harder class. I won't say avoid him, but be prepared to study a lot.
Taking a math class at this university with a professor who's first language is english is always a bargain. Street explains with impeccable clarity but of course maintains high expectations for exams. SPOILER ALERT: multivariable calculus is not easy!
Very helpful. Exams are so easy.
