Professor Black is one of my favorite teachers at UW Madison. Yes there were pop quizzes that could be tricky but if you read which (besides 4 short essays) is the only homework. He always greeted us and loved participation and wanted everyone to succeed. If you read, participate and show up you will get a good grade. Great Professor!
afr 338 and professor is a nice guy. class is difficult because there are pop quizzes he thinks are easy but are hard, will be 30 plus pages of dense reading and the quizzes will be on insignificant material that no one will remember like the tiniest details. so hard if you do the readings twice still they are so hard and 30 percent of grade!!
This professor is the worst. The grading is completely inconsistent. One day, he'll dock points for minor things that weren't even mentioned, and the next day he ignores major issues. It's like he's making up the rules as he goes along. You never know what to expect, and he doesn't provide clear guidelines or feedback. It's frustrating and unfair.
WTF is MLA format, I've never seen a professor obsess so much over formatting. This guy will legit give you a failing grade if you don't meet his absurd formatting criteria, which he doesn't even teach! He just sends you to some random website and tells you to figure it out on your own. This professor is a complete joke. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Professor Black is very approachable and helpful when you ask for feedback. Other students had a hard time with the grading on essays, but as long as you truly follow the prompt, there should be no reason for low scores. He made this class engaging, even though I was not interested in science fiction, and it made going to class much more fun.
I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST TAKING ANY COURSE TAUGHT BY PROFESSOR BLACK Professor Black is the most INCOMPETENT professor I've encountered. So much irrelevant reading. The instructions for assignments are so poorly communicated that I often found myself struggling to understand what was expected (and he will relentlessly points off for formatting)
Professor Black is an utter failure as a professor. His assignments are a masterclass in confusion, with instructions so poorly written that I often wondered if he was deliberately trying to sabotage his students. If you have any respect for your education or your mental health, steer clear of Professor Black and any course he teaches.
WHERE TO START... He's the type of prof to take a blowoff class seriously. He has this pedantic policy where you cant use electronics unless you sit in the front row. As someone who takes notes using my ipad this was completely unreasonable. Avoid any course associated with Professor Black if you value your sanity and GPA.
Prof. Black did a really great job with this class. He shows a true passion for the subject he teaches, and teaches in a way that every student can understand. Class was made of 3 essays and a final project that could either be creative or just a bigger essay. He's a great guy, and by the end of the semester you won't regret taking his class.
Was a great professor who was always passionate about his teacher. He is very lenient with deadlines and will allow for an extension if asked. He made the topics very interesting. I would recommend him as a professor to everyone!
Worst Professor I've had at UW-Madison. Not a lot of assignments but a lot of unnecessary readings that don't correlate with the lecture. I found myself when assignments were assigned lost because of poor instructions by Prof. Black. If you need a class for ethnic studies course DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE or ANY COURSE ASSOCIATED WITH PROF. BLACK.
Attendance is mandatory (3 excused absences), but he never really learns names, so participation is very optional. The class can be unorganized at times, so don't expect the syllabus to be followed, especially later in the semester. Pretty easy grader as long as you follow the instructions.
Prof. Black is a super chill guy, and pretty understanding if you miss an assignment too. There was a student before me after class who literally just forgot to do an assignment and Professor Black just game him a free extension. Lectures weren't always the most interesting, but Black himself is funny and caring. Class is an easy A :)
He is a pretty cool person. Do the readings and participate and you'll have a good time.
Very good profesor. I had no art background but he made the class interesting and understandable. Also handled the COVID situation very well and was very kind to his students. Would definitely recommend AAS 242 if youre looking for an interesting ethnic studies course!!
He's a pretty chill guy but he is stern on attendance; I saw him kick someone out for being like 10-20 minutes late before. This class was a pretty easy A though as long as you show up, participate, and read the books you should be fine. If you're worried about anything, hes pretty accessible during office hours.
Anthony was such a great professor to have. I really do not like to read but he made lecture really enjoyable and himself very relatable to all of us. He always emphasized that he was on our side and would push due dates if we needed it. As long as you stay on top of reading, it is an easy A.
I adored this class and Professor Black. He's so funny and interesting, and really engages and relates to students. He values everyone's opinions and wants to get to know his students. He's not a super difficult grader, and he's pretty flexible. All he wants is participation.
The midterm has slide identification that requires a lot of memorization. He strongly encourages participation, as the class is discussion-based. The reading responses take longer than anticipated, but the papers are fairly short and easy to write. You don't really have to do the readings you don't write on, and lecture slides are not online.
Took this class for my Ethnic Studies requirement and had a bad experience with AP Art History so I was dreading it coming in, but the class itself is both interesting and manageable. Only one exam (midterm), three short papers summarizing reading, and two longer analysis pieces (2-3 pages and 4-6 pages). Only complaint is lecture slides not online
Professor Black's lectures were always interesting, but participation was necessary or else he would get very mad. He is a little disorganized in terms of deadlines. A couple of papers and participating in discussion are pretty much your only grades. You do need to read the material; it is actually pretty interesting.
He is often condescending during lecture and corrects students' answers by explaining what was just said (by the student...). Despite this, the class was super easy and the readings had a lot of insightful information.
Professor Black's class has been one of my favorite at UW. His social and societal awareness prompts interesting discussions that engage students of all demographics; something not many professors I've had are able to do. This was one of the most engaging classes I've taken.
Great guy, awesome class! I knew nothing about art or ethnic studies but this class was very informative and interesting. Expect to participate, he will cold call if no one answers his questions, and the course is very discussion based. One easy exam and two papers that were graded reasonably. Felt like more of art history than ethnic studies.
Assigned a lot of readings for no real purpose, often didn't guide our lectures. Prof seemed very unorganized with lectures and didn't give time to write down slides. Very educated and passionate about what he taught, but expected everyone to be at his knowledge for a 200-level class w/ mostly freshmen. Maybe this just wasn't his class.
Anthony was a really chill professor for the class. The assignments weren't really hard and you didn't really have to do the readings, but lectures were mandatory cause he took attendance. Easy ethnic studies credit, informative as well.
Took an afro american lit class with him 2 years ago. Honestly the only class I remember taking at UW. In addition to that, the only art history class I have ever taken to actually have an impact on me. Hard class but completely worth it.
Nice guy and fun to listen to. He is very hard to get ahold of however. I emailed him before a class I knew I was going to miss for an interview, only to come to the next class period expecting to have a midterm except he had changed the date of the midterm during the class I missed. When I asked him about it after class he kinda blew it off.
Overall, great professor. Refers to assigned readings in lectures, but is adept to open dialogue. First exam heavily based off memorization, so study well. Walked away with vast awareness to Black art well beyond Basquiat
Cool guy, but very hard to get a hold of and get help from. Lectures are long and discussion based. Notes are not posted on Learn@UW.
He's a very cool guy, his lectures are pretty entertaining. Keeping up with readings is a must. Tells you exactly what you need to know for exams, just have to put in the work to memorize it. He does different takes on assignments than most professors, which is nice. Even with no art background, I learned a lot. Decent class.
Interesting, intelligent, knowledgable, and approachable. Great class!
Really easy and interesting class. It is a must to keep up with the readings.
Nice guy, but horribly unclear in his expectations. I was a 4.0 student before this class. I was literally shocked when I received my midterm and paper grade. But even after that, I had no idea how to improve to meet his guidelines. Wouldn't recommend this class.
Anothy is a really relaxed professor and a really nice guy. The texts we read for AfroLit227 were interesting and thought provoking. HOWEVER, he is a little too laid back, he didn't tell us what was on our midterm until two days beforehand and he was late to our final exam b/c he was printing it off. Nice guy, unorganized teacher.
