Seeger is a good professor, as lectures are the most helpful thing. His proofs were well-explained, and the tests were difficult but always based on the material in class.

Seeger is fairly nice about grading and gives a lot of partial credit. He also wrote the textbook for this class so it is easy to review if you miss lecture. Homework was challenging and slightly long for a week, but he helps during office hours if needed. Midterms were easy, but the final was hard; be prepared to memorize definitions.

Professor Seeger is my favorite professor in the whole school. This class remind me why I love math again. The exam are not that hard, easier than homework, review sheet is super helpful. Professor Seeger is a really friendly professor who are willing to spend extra time to help me understand material in the lecture. Learn Analysis From Him !

Professor Seeger took over class about 1/3 of the way through the year, and he was very accommodating. He made himself as available as possible outside of class, encouraged us to ask questions, was fair about homework deadlines, and provided review sheets that prepared us for the exams. Excellent professor.

Great professor, and really cared about the class. If you show that you are putting in effort, he is very friendly and will help you out with the class.

He gives no partial points on tests. His tests are very heavy and can't be finished within 50 minutes. He puts an extra question for extra credit. Simply, he does not want you to be successful and he makes you feel dumb when asking questions in class. He has a very defensive attitude so it's hard to communicate with him.

Professor Andreas Seeger is very good at explaining things, he does not assume any background and clears even silliest of doubts. Professor wants you to learn, in the very first class, he told students not to worry about grades, he will take care of them.

Beware of this exam! If you do not review enough, it is impossible to do well on exam. Exam is TOUGH and LONG (given that he gave only 50 minutes for 3 questions). However, exam is similar to exam review sheet, so do your review and go to office hour. You will do fine if you work hard enough, but this won't be no where as easy as 521.

Exams are so difficult and his practice sheets have nothing to do with exam.... don't take his word when he says do the practice problems.... 50 minutes with 3 questions.... each question takes 30 minutes to figure out and solve.... the average was 15% .... tough grader with no partial points... stay away

He is the professor who never gives any partial credit even if you made some good progress in proving the problems. I took 521 and loved analysis but his way of lecturing the course is not only confusing for a lot of students but boring. It seems that he talks to himself when writing on the board. Never take him - find someone else.

His exams are the toughest. The class average was below 20% and he mentioned he barely curves. A lot of students dropped the class. The problem set is okay but it doesn't prepare you for the exam. Plus, his lectures are quite confusing when explaining. Never uses pictures to explain... just writing on the board. I wish I knew before taking him.

After spending many hours studying for analysis, I ended up dropping this course since I failed the exam. The exam questions have nothing to do with what he is doing in class. He expects you to solve them within 50 minutes by giving you 3 questions that are very hard and too long to solve. He gives no partial points at all. The exam average was 10%

Not a good professor at all. His tests do not reflect what he teaches. He skips lots of steps in the proof and barely does any examples. He likes writing on the board but his proofs are so messy and confusing. Jumping from one topic to another makes the whole class ponder on that. He is not organized in his lectures. Take someone else

Avoid him at all costs. Very boring and unlikeable person. His tests are extremely hard and complicated. I guess his goal is to fail every student... probably it's something German.

He is a good researcher but not a teacher. Don't expect to learn anything he writes on the board. Lots of homework that do not prepare you for the midterms. His explanation is quite messy and confusing. He gives NO partial credits to students. Think about the money that you pay for school and do not waste your time with him. Find someone else

He is a good person but his tests are very hard and complicated. The class average was below 30%.

Great Professor for teaching upper-level analysis course. The material is indeed extremely difficult and the lecture seems to me is a bit of moving too fast. Sometimes, the writing on the board is not easy to follow. Be prepare to spend a huge amount of time to absorb the material.

Exams are exactly like his review sheets. Really helpful during office hours and would highly recommend for any upper level math class but I can see why calculus students might not like him (he goes fast and likes to skip steps.)

Seeger is very nice to all his students and tries his best to help everyone who asks. Hmwk was a mix of Rudin problems and his own problems, which were harder. No matter who you take this course with the material is tough - but Seeger does a great job giving insight. One of the best people to take this course from - if you want to major in math.

He is incredibly helpful and interested in his student's success. The assignments and review sheets he gives are exactly like his exams, which are very fair. He explains the material VERY thoroughly and is also approachable. Don't be deterred by the comments from calc 1,2 students. From my experience he is one of the best math prof. at UW.

Besides the German accent, this guy is a pretty good teacher. Sometimes he goes a little fast, and teaches "out-there," do-it-the-long-way concepts. He holds review sessions that really help. He does actually like his students, so try asking him questions. Always wears socks with sandals though... maybe it's a German thing...

His lectures made zero sense, but if you worked on the review sheet and figured out most of it, you could get by. 222 is just a sucky class in general really.

Professor Seeger is a very likable and incredibly intelligent person. I have a lot of respect for him. That being said, be prepared to teach yourself a lot of calculus in this class because his lectures aren't going to help you out much.

Seeger is an excellent professor, one of the top. I was very discouraged reading all these 221/222 kids. They just want to to plug and chug. If you want to learn real mathematics, you should take Seeger. Yes, he is very difficult, but he is extremely good. You can't learn passively, in mathematics or in general life. One of the best.

More theory based than others. Difficult but not the worst thing in the world.

Seeger was one of the hardest teachers mostly because he could not explain the concepts very well.In most lectures, towards the end, he would go on the rants about concepts that are not even needed to be known. The only reason I got a decent grade was because of my discussion TA.Without her I would have been lost.

I signed up for calc 222 not realizing to check the ratings of professors and this was a grave mistake. First, he doesn't use the book, but rather some random notes a colleague put together. His lectures are incomprehensible as they are so abstract they don't even explain the concepts. Tests are impossible. Good heart, just not sure how to teach.

Seeger's lectures are often hard to follow, and I don't like the textbook that was used. However, the class overall was structured pretty well and the tests aren't impossible. This class in general is hard but as long as you study and do the homework it's not terribly hard to get an A. This class will take a lot of commitment, but it's passable.

If you have him for this class, you wont learn anything from him. Sign up for a tutoring program (should be free and told about it) go to every discussion and go to T.A. office hours. Your book is a photocopy of proofs, hw, and no example problems. If you can get a different progessor, do.

All he does is proof why stuff works in calc 2, I don't understand half of it.

He is the nicest guy you will ever meet but he is just not a good teacher. He is very unclear and tests very hard, at least you will know your stuff if you have him

In lecture people in class rarely know what he's doing and talking about. His tests are difficult also which makes for a horrible class. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE

Great prof, his class was not difficult at all. All that was required to get a good grade was to do the homework, study, practice doing extra problems and take notes. I had a pretty terrible T.A. so make sure to get a good T.A. To the people who complained about his 221 class: this is a university class, not high school.

Obviously brilliant, but has difficulty in explaining his thoughts in a way that is understandable. Does very few actual examples in class - tests were often quite difficult, almost no one scores above 50%. Luckily if you go to class and make a serious effort, you'll almost certainly get a decent grade.

seeger is very thorough and clear. he really took the time to help because he could see that I really wanted to understand. he expects you to know definitions and proof methods-- but that's the whole point of abstract mathematics!

Thank god for his easy tests, because that is ALL he has going for him. Easy enough to understand, but the theory was largely ridiculous and her often jumped around on topics, so much so you often didn't know what he was referring to.

Seeger is an incredible professor. He knows the topic hands-down and is extremely helpful in office hours. In response to the poor ratings for 221: welcome to collegiate mathematics. You will have to think about problems, not just plug in numbers and solve. Understanding the theory is crucial, and math will only get harder if you don't master it.

Has a german accent but after a week you'll understand him just fine. The man is pure math genius and is in love with trig functions and proofs. But I liked the way he taught. His exams were fairly easy and very generous curves. Now that I am in 222, I am very glad that I had him for 221

Seeger is a genius and that's why he can't explain Calculus very well. He likes a lot of proofs! My T.A. saved my grade in this class!!!

Prof Seeger teaches and tests on proofs and definitions for the most part. He never does examples in class and on many tests you are REQUIRED to know a word-for-word definition of something. Seeger teaches material that no other Math 221 professors teach, things that most aren't responsible for until the later weeks of Math 222.

pretty much the worst class i have ever taken. i could cared less for all all the all the proofs and random tangents he would go on. Do not take him!!

ouch

Why me God, why me!?!?

HE IS A GREAT GREAT MATH TEACHER!! I LOVE HIS CLASS!!

A good person, but a TERRIBLE teacher. My TA saved my grade in this class; thank god for him. This professor is so smart he is dumb!

PROFESSOR SEEGER IS THE WORST PROF EVER. DO NOT TAKE HIM. ALL HE DOES IS PROOFS. HE IS USELESS IN ALL ASPECTS OF LEARNING!

Prof Seeger is a very smart man, as everyone else has said, his homework can be extremely difficult because he'll give it to you a week in advance but will still be talking about homework material the day before its due, tests are fairly easy as you just have to know what you're doing, and i never took calc before this

Unlike everyone else, I think Prof Seeger is great! I like the homework problems he writes; sometimes tough but very interesting and they make the exam questions seem very easy. Seeger also offers an hour help session every Sunday, which is really helpful. I doubt any other professor does that. I strongly recommend him, but a calc backround helps.

First off-genius. This however is his downfall. The man is way to smart to be a professor. All lectures deal with proofs and no applications or examples. He makes his own homework and uses different notation than the book. This makes learning difficult because he uses a different approach than the book. Smart guy, terrible professor. Dont get him!

He's an absolute genius, but lacks pedagogic ability. Seeger makes his own homework and believe me - it's difficult. Nice guy, horrible prof. I wouldn't recommend taking him, especially if you haven't had calculus before.

Matrix Algebra is not supposed to be hard. He made it ridiculous. all the 20 other sessions used the same book. He used this wacko theory book and his curve (lack there of) resulted in 1 A in the ENTIRE section.

Ridiculous. He teaches in proofs and is basically as interesting as a textbook on tape. His homework he writes himself is long and hard and the TA's can't help because they don't speak english. The tests are slightly easier than the homework but if I hadn't taken calc before this I would be COMPLETELY lost as opposed to just mostly.

Avoid at ALL costs! He spends all his lectures on useless proofs, while you are stuck by yourself to learn formulas and ways to solve problems. He doesn't even work out of the book, so good luck with that. He makes his own homework problems, so tutors can't even help you. Basically I am miserable and confused in this class.

He knows his stuff, the accent was something to get used to at first, but if you havent taken calc before, then you'll be confused and will need to rely on the TA to help you, so hopefully you get a good one. He sometimes makes things more confusing than they are, so just get the notes from someone else and look them over and you'll be okay.

eh

Hard class, but excellent teacher

Just to add, while i still think he is a horrible teacher witch incomprehensible examples and impossible, graded homework, his exams actually turn out to be fairly simple and basic. wierd. a calc background is almost mandatory!

While i fully respect his genious, he has a very hard time delivering his knowledge to the students. His lectures are some of the most difficult to understand and, for some reason, he seems to feel the need to take a completely different route than all other professors for the topics he teaches. Homework problems complex. tutors cant help...

Excellent prof. Goes through proofs methodically, and inspires interest in material. Very thorough, and takes time out of class and his schedule to help students with individual problems.

good class

Lecture was crazy. Guy just kept going through useless proofs that we would never need to know for tests or anything. Exams were very hard. Problems ridiculous as possible.

This guy is smart, but he's hard to follow. If you're in this class with him, keep on top of things. Lecture is a little hard to understand but bearable. Discussion sections are the only hope. Class is tough.

Very scatterbrained and hard to understand, try to avoid unless you can really follow and understand stuff fast and easily

Prof. Seeger is great, if you want to actually learn calculus. If you want someone to tell you formulas so you can plug in numbers on the test then take someone else.

Not nice or good at teaching

Seriously, AVOID THIS MAN.....he is absolutely garbage....writing is terrible, speaks very quietly with a strong german accent....all he does is proove theories that don't help at all...everyone scrambles to learn the material from the TAs a few days before the midterms...i heard borisov is better

Lectures were useless. The exams were nothing like the homework. You can't here him half the time and you can't read his writing

Lectures are absolutely pointless and tests are very hard. He wastes his time doing proofs and rarely shows how to do anything that will actually be on the test. If you can avoid him, do it.

Worst class I've ever taken. He paces back and forth babbling about theory. Lectures are useless. Tests are ridiculous. I got a 47% on one, and it was still a C after the curve. Avoid him at all costs.

This man is terrible. Lectures are all proofs and no help actually learning how to do problems. Therefore, lecture is totally worthless. Exams are also very difficult. Hard to hear and hard to understand. Don't take him!!!

teaches nearly entirely theoretically. hard to follow.

My TA had to re-teach us everything in section. If you can't teach yourself, don't take him! You will learn nothing from him! He likes to show proofs that are not very helpful; I never used the notes he gave in class!

Speaks softly and writes small so you'll want to seat near the front. He teaches the class like an honors course so it's easy to get lost and fall asleep during one of his numerous proofs. I found myself learning the material straight from the book often.

You better like teaching yourself calculus if you get stuck with this man. He is hard to understand and lectures on why it is true these things work and not how to do them. Avoid this man at all costs. Please, while you still have a soul at the moment.

All theory with no examples. Unless you enjoy studying everything for yourself with no one to help you through it, don't take him.

He seems to be a really smart guy. But the problem is that he is not a very good prof. He tends to skip a lot of steps and speeks very softly. Its hard to follow him. Over all try to avoid his class as much as you can unless you are really brainy.

avoid this man, nice guy but not the best teacher, thank god for TAs

dont take him

Goes off on tangents really easily and doesn't use clear examples. If you don't read the book and get really comfortable with your TA, good luck. If you can avoid having him as a professor, then do it!
