He is a nice and passionate professor! However, unless you have the time to read everyday of the week and is not easily bored by old stories, then enjoy. I was not expected to have two or more, 10 page plus stories every week and the students have to remember every detail in each story, especially when it came to the oral midterm and final exam.

Prof. Detwyler is amazing and definitely passionate about his work. As a literature course, be prepared to read for every discussion. He'll definitely get you invested in your work if you allow it.

Anatoly is very easygoing. There are no exams for this class besides a group project at the end. There are quizzes during the discussion and they are very straightforward, it's either you read the readings or you didn't read them. The lectures are based on the textbook. Attendance is mandatory and is a big factor in your grade.

Prof. Detwyler is super passionate about East Asia and our lectures were pretty interesting, especially when it was about lesser known topics. Discussion sections were a big part of the grade, so try to participate if you can. Other than that, it was an easy class if you participate and do the readings, and the final was making a game.

I dont know how to describe the amazing feeling I have for this professor as i realized I have been in college for 2 years and he is the first "really normal and good" teacher I have

Prof. Detwyler has a wealth of knowledge about Chinese film, and will consistently push students to engage deeply with the course material. The lectures are long, but Prof. Detwyler makes sure discussions are rich and productive. He is also accessible outside of class and seriously invested in the success and growth of his students. 10/10!

Whoever is saying he is a good professor is lying to you. absolutely terrible. The attendance and assignments were graded harshly by his TA. Do NOT take his class ever.

Great professor who really knows his stuff in Chinese literature. Interesting and respected man.

The lectures are interesting to listen to if you're interested in East Asia and it's pretty relaxing as there are no tests the entire semester. The reading assigned that weren't stories were pretty boring sometimes but you can push through it.

Prof. Detwyler is a good professor and very knowledgeable about East Asian history but can be dry sometimes. Also, the major projects in the class do not relate to any of the course material, so it makes the lectures seem pointless.

He has a substantial and unique understanding of East Asian culture and contemporary issues. I take this course as a required area study of my IS major, but I decided to take an extra East Asian studies certificate after taking his class. Looking forward to his EASTD 375. He can be a bit dry for those who are not really interested in the topic.

Prof. Detwyler was a great professor, but a little dry during lectures. He knew what he was teaching and was very to access outside of class time with any questions.

Prof Detwyler is great. He is very passionate about Asian cultures and knows a lot too. His lectures are pretty interesting . Not a ton of work outside class aside from some readings, but very manageable. If you are looking to increase your understanding and interest of Asian cultures, take a class by Prof Detwyler!
