I wish I could have taken this class in person because Prof. Nelson tried his hardest to make lectures interesting and engaging but sometimes the information was still kind of dry. Two essays, a final exam, and weekly discussion posts assignments are graded by TAs.
His lectures were always super engaging and kept me interested! Funny storytelling like lectures which was easy to follow. I wish more professors were like him
I had him during the COVID-19 closings and he was awesome. Very flexible, funny narrative-style lectures, and very clearly organized. 10/10 would recommend :))
The grade was based on; 20% participation 50% 2 papers and 30% Final. Had very high expectations for the papers, not the kind of thing you could BS at the last minute. Recommend meeting with him or your TA to discuss papers beforehand. 2-hour final involved needing to know about 100 terms in depth. Good solid lectures. Interesting class overall.
Professor Nelson was a tough teacher, but a great one. It certainly wasn't an easy A, but I definitely learned a lot. Attend his discussion section if you can--he is very specific about how he wants papers done and it absolutely helps to have him as a resource in discussion. Head in for office hours, too. He's a cool dude and very passionate
Professor Nelson is without a doubt my favorite professor. His lectures are so interesting, clear and targeted that the class goes by extremely fast. The TA's who lead discussion don't even compare to how fantastic Prof Nelson is. He's super available to meet up outside of class and genuinely cares about the topic. Best class I've taken
Great teacher, very engaging in class. Most of grade comes from papers and final exam. Not difficult if you attend the lectures and pay attention.
He's a great Professor. Highly engaging. Make sure you attend lectures, very important!! Start studying early on with exam terms, otherwise it was very enjoyable. Great lecturer!
Challenging, but he made it interesting both in lecture and in section. The first paper was 4 pages, the second was an 8-page research paper. Preparation for final exam is tough; start writing exam terms on notecards ASAP! 118 total terms to know, only 15 on exam and choose 10 to write about, then write essay on a given quotation. Loved this class!
Very interesting and engaging! I enjoyed going to lecture! The final exam is very straight-forward, as long as you went to lecture. He grades the two papers fairly as well. One of my favorite professors.
Though he was the professor of my class, he was also the TA for my section...I'm pretty sure we were the only section he taught...at the beginning of the semester I dreaded section, but by the end it was the only class I looked forward to all week. Perhaps its because he teaches education policy, but his classes are informative, interestingand fun
I think he's entertaining, he livens up lectures with little songs and dances occasionally. He grades hard on exams, apparently. I never got up the nerve to ask for mine. Several texts used, but not super expensive ones.
Prof Nelson is a pretty entertaining lecturer. He really loves what he teaches. Only 2 papers and an extremely hard final. Readings were INCREDIBLY dull!! I also had a wonderful TA... This class was hard for me b/c I have no interest in history, but I recommend it for those who enjoy education and history!
1 short paper, 1 long research paper and a crazy final...90 terms to know-15 will be on the exam and then the most complex essay question i have ever seen in any class. However, if you know the terms then you can easily write the essay....discussion is worthless but lecture was very enjoyable. challenging class but interesting
Liked the class, papers are graded pretty hard

Great class. He does a good job with a complicated subject. He also chose good readings. He handles a mix of undergrads and grads quite well. Only assignment is a 25 page paper due at the end. He will rip your rough draft apart but all his comments are very helpful. And I almost forgot...he's very cute!
I think he's very cute. He is very intelligent and quite ambitious too. He's a very promising young scholar. His expectations are very high for the entire class, both undergrads and grads alike. There is a LOT of reading, and your are expected to craft a perfect research paper. No tests, which is nice...
Great class. He was always excited for class. Made lectures enjoyable to go to.Two papers. the final was a killer. You have 60+ terms to know, not knowing which 15 are on the test. the essay was very long.
A great job! He evaluates students well, with two papers and one cumulative final exam.
Fun to listen to!
Not charismatic! Incredibly arrogant and taught material that was completely unrelated to the alleged topic of the course. Example: we were learning about Plato, Rousseau and other useless philosophers in a class called, "School and Society". His connections made no sense at all and he prided himself on being able to "lead us" to enlightenment.

Since this class is on some of the topics that adam really gets into its fun to watch his boyish responces to some of the questions.
A great, charismatic, interesting lecturer. However, he is very picky with the papers he assigns. If you are not a good writer, I would suggest not taking this class. Our first day he gave us a 10 page packet listing all things not to do in a paper, as well as his pet peeves for papers. There should be an upper level english class as a pre-req
Wonderful class, wonderful lecturer. Reasonably difficult, but worth while.
this was an amazing class and after taking it, Nelson became my fav professor. he is a very clear and organized lecturer and is completely passionate about the topic. Great class, really thought provoking and allows you to look at education in an entirely new light. TAKE HIS CLASSES! he's the best!
