Prof. Gade is the best professor at UW!

Professor Gade is a wonderful professor and, better yet, a wonderful person. She's sharp as a tack and if you take the time to understand the material (both the readings and the lecture material) that she has carefully selected for her courses, you'll learn a ton. Take a course with her! I would take another, if given the chance.

Easiest class ever. Her lectures make no sense she just spews in different directions. I didn't go and still did great on midterm and quizzes.

Very enthusiastic and an engaging lecturer. Clearly cares about her students. She can veer off topic and get pretty abstract, but she doesn't expect you to always follow her. Easy class and interesting

Amazing professor for Islamic Studies, really knows her stuff and such a great teacher too!

A fantastic professor who is clearly passionate about what she teaches. Lectures are also done in a manner that's engaging; she includes plenty of audio-visual aids and cultural references and just tries to have a good time. The class pushes you to think deeply about course concepts but still sets you up for success. Great class and professor!

Prof. Gade is one of the very best professors at UW!

Lots of dense reading in this class, and the reading can get very dry at times. However, the class was very good. Professor Gade knows what she is talking about. Lectures do sometimes get abstract, but they can be fun to listen to. Overall, solid class and good professor.

Professor Gade is very passionate about what she teaches, so passionate it sometimes gets complex and difficult to follow. At first, I was extremely confused, but with an open mindset and creative thinking this class is very interesting! 5 short writing assignments, 1 midterm, and 2 longer essays that are all extremely manageable.

Very scattered, ambiguous lectures that require an open mind in order to get through. Not that the material is hard, it is a relatively easy course, but you need to be able to adopt a whimsical train of thought. 5, 1-page writings based on weekly readings, 1 midterm, 2 longer legitimate essays (4+ pages). Very nice lady though, just an odd class

Professor Gade is really passionate about what she teaches. Lectures are supplementary to reading and build on major ideas for the course. Weekly readings are manageable and interesting, though can be abstract at times. Overall, I really enjoyed this class and will be taking another class taught by Professor Gade next semester.

Not a whole lot of interaction w/ Prof Gade, since all the grading and feedback for class assignments was done by TAs. She's very passionate about the material, but lots of the ideas are extremely abstract and confusing, even for the humanities. 5 weekly writing assignments, an essay, a midterm, a final, and participation compose the overall grade.

The class is one of the good intro classes and I liked Prof. Gades lectures. Its a fair not super difficult class and shes pretty cool to get to know. She cares and thats rare sometimes, so I recommend this class and similar classes especially if shes teaching it.

Gade is a great professor who clearly knows what she is talking about, but is sometimes scattered and hard to follow. It was much easier retaining information via the podcasts she posted online after we were sent home due to covid than it was inside the classroom in the beginning of the semester. It is not that hard to get an A if you put in work.

EASY

Fantastic teaching. Knows what she is talking about. Her lectures are very interesting and informative. Not afraid to show the occasional video/movies relevant to the material. One of my favorite professors, and one of the best professors I have had.

Professor Gade really cares about her students! Her lecture style is very overwhelming at first, but after a few classes I got the hang of how to simplify what she was trying to say from ambiguous professor language to something I can write down in my notes. Her passion for the subject is contagious, and she brings a true enthusiasm!

She is a great professor. I have taken two of her classes on campus, and took the second one specifically to hear her opinions on Environmental Religion (270). I think she is both a genius and insane. We love her and fear her. Take her classes to change your life and learn a lot.

Prof Gade gives engaging lectures and is very knowledgable/enthusiastic, but you definitely need to do the readings or you'll be lost.

Avoid at all costs!

Although Prof. Gade clearly shows knowledge on her field of study, she always seems scattered. Everything said in lecture goes way over everybody's head. The weekly readings are long and laborious. Please do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. It is not an easy Humanities, and I would not suggest it to anyone.

Professor Gade is very philosophical and ambiguous with her lectures. I can tell she really cares about her students and the material, but her articulation was confusing and very abstract. If taking this class, keep an open mind.

I'm not a religious person, so I felt uncomfortable on the first few days, but after the Christianity lectures the class quickly became my favorite. Only 5 2-page papers, 2 exams & 1 5pg paper. Dr Gade is an engaging professor even though I didn't understand what was going on half the time. Learned more from this class than any one ive taken before

This professor's lectures are completely all over the place. I know she really cares about the subject, but she does not outline what she expects you to know.

GREAT CLASS!!

Amazing lecturer, learned so much!!!

Prof. Gade likes to ramble on in lecture making them hard to follow. This class has a lot of readings that are not fun to read. I would absolutely not take this class unless you are a humanities major. Would not take this class again, 3/10.

Smartest professor and person. Teaches a lot of intro classes, good at making students feel comfortable. Come to class, read and write and your grade is good. Cares about her students -- great class if you want to think about the environment and learn something.

Very passionate about Environmental Studies, but not always going at explaining it all. Five 1-2 page papers, one 4-6 page paper, and one midterm. All is based on the reading posted online, which she describes during lecture.

This class has a lot of reading. Also, for six of the weeks you are expected to write a short paper on the readings to bring to discussion. One of the short papers is turned into a longer paper. Lectures are very scattered and unclear. Expectations for assignments are not very clear. Midterm was fairly easy. I would only take if necessary.

Awesome!

Offers unique perspectives on the broad topic of Environmental Studies while reading many famous writers. Attendance is part of the grade, so you have to go, and go into her office hours before the final paper is due to make sure you have what she is looking for. Overall, great class for humanities credit, Midterm wasn't that hard.

respects students and diversity - great profP

Prof. Gade is always willing to give feedback on anything you need help with in the class. Some readings are hard to understand, and her lecture explanations can sometimes make you even more confused, but she is always willing to give further explanations during office hours or after class. She truly cares about her students and what they think!

Professor Gade is very nice and very passionate about the material she teaches. Her lectures however, are very, very disorganized and scattered. The upside is you watch a lot of movies which are very interesting. Prepare to read 50-100 pages a week and to write weekly essays. Attendance is 15% of your grade so show up!

Prof. Gade is extremely unorganized and her lectures are confusing. There's a lack of focus on course structure and lecture. She's also sort of annoying as a person; constantly brags about having a PhD, and when she brings her daughter to class she makes a point of having her participate. Unclear as to what she expects for papers. Tough grader.

Wonderful teacher and person. She's extremely empathetic to many personal issues that may arise in a student's life. She goes out of her way to help out. Really knowledgeable about the subject matter, and makes it interesting.

SO SUPPORTIVE. She is so helpful and a great instructor. Any questions, about class or life, Professor Gade is your person. She is also extremely knowledgable. A little confusing and pretty easy (is a 100 level class though) so I'd really recommend her for a higher level class.

This course was not too bad. Professor is very passionate about the material and is a subject expert on the matter. Can be somewhat condescending sometimes but not intentional it seems. Course has a LOT of reading, but very easy to do well on the exams and quizzes if you just do the reading. Notes are printed/given to you each lecture.

Professor Gade knows her stuff, inside and out. If you're passionate about the topic she will give it her all to help you. I'm so glad that I took her class!

Overall, Gade knows what she is talking about. She is very knowledgable about Islam and has some amazing experiences, like studying Muslim women in Malaysia and stories like that. She has pop quizzes, but they're easy and she'll warn you. I barely went, ended up get zeros on the quizzes, but studied hard and got a B. Wouldn't recommend.

First few lectures are intimidating, but stick with it. The course isn't at all what I expected, but it did turn out to be interesting. A lot of reading (skimming was fine). As long as you show up for lecture and attempt assignments you should be able to get an A.

Easy class, but Prof. Gade can be hard to follow in lecture. She will get disorganized and jump from topic to topic while speaking. Very knowledgeable about the material, but can't always explain it well. Very fair in grading. If you show up and put in at least some effort, a B or better should be easy to do.

She is an amazing professor! Deep, but you should have a previous knowledge about what she talks. Just ask and listen. Then, you can share your thoughts with them. She is very democratic in asking and answering positions.

Yes, she didn't talk about modern Islam... but what are you going to understand about modern Islam if you don't understand its roots? She does go quickly over stuff and there is a lot of readings/homeworks. But if you want to learn new stuff, this is a good class to take. She is very neutral and is respectful of everyone.

Courses with Professor Anna Gade require two simple student traits: you must do all the assignments and you must engage at least a little bit with the subject beyond the expectations of the course. Professor Gade goes above and beyond to assist students in these aims.

The class is easy, but she's confusing and doesn't do a good job explaining things. Attendance is mandatory, but she's so unorganized and confusing that it's hard to follow anything she talks about.

I have had a few classes with Anna Gade. She is an excellent professor and I can't say enough about her and her classes. A+ professor

Prof Gade is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic lady, but she speaks lots of technical terms and very fast. She does not use her power point during lecture. Slides are posted online but only contain unorganized keywords. Lots of reading. Overall quite hard and heavy even for Muslims. Good TA is really needed to clarify the organization of lessons.

This class was not what I expected. I expected a class about modern Islam, and its modern relevance. Nope. Prof. Gade knows what she is talking about, and is clearly interested. She cannot communicate well. She is a scholar, and cannot express complex ideas at all. Powerpoints were tough, and class was just sleepy time.

Prof. Gade is the probably the smartest person I have ever encountered in my life. That being said, her teaching style is rather abstract and hard to follow sometimes. Don't let that discourage you from taking any class with her. She is extremely genuine, encouraging, and helpful.

She is the worst lecturer I've ever had. She is very, very unclear and cannot explain abstract concepts well at all. She is also boring. She focuses her entire class on early Islam and completely ignores modern developments and controversial issues. She doesn't follow her power points at all, so it is impossible to take notes from her.

This lady is not good at teaching Islam! She babbles on and on during lecture and is completely unaware that NO ONE understands anything she says. She does a poor job of explaining things that should be easy to explain. The Sufism part of the class is horrible...to this day I have no clue what sufism is and I atttended every lecture. Don't Take!!

I LOVED anna gade. she's fun, energetic and made learning the material fun. Take a class with her!

For anyone genuinely interested in learning about Islam and the philosophical and political nature of the religion-- DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Prof. Gade avoids hot-topic issues. We spent half the semester discussing Sufism (only 10% of the modern Islamic community) totally avoided Shiites and Shi'a conflict or even history. Disorganized.

She taught about Islam last spring. I really enjoy her class. She's very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and willing to help anyone. I actually got AB for her class, but she help me getting A by reconsider my final assignment. If you already know about Islam, the class might be pretty easy at the beginning. But , she will always happy to assist you!
