Would recommend Anja 100x over. Her lectures were engaging along with very helpful. The books required in the course were hard to read, but lectures got me through them.
The final was only questions about facts from the books/readings which was really weird? The final was also printed wrong and only 10 questions. The papers are fairly easy, and lectures are important, but she cancels lecture at least once a week. My TA was amazing though, shout out Brittany
For me, this was a life-changing class. Twice a week, I felt like a learnt a lot about the world and myself; about relationships, friendship, life. Anya is brilliant and funny and honest in a way that none of my other professors are; I'll remember this class forever.
One of the best professors I've had at UW so far! Participation is not needed, but it helps a lot if you go to class. A decent amount of reading is necessary, but besides that, the class is very easy. The books are also somewhat entertaining, so it's not that bad.
Pretty cool professor, she's funny and relatable. Lectures were chill, and showing up basically meant you aced the final.
She was genuinely amazing. You can tell she loves her job and her students. Took ENGL 169 and all we did was read (but you really don't have to haha). The final exam is so so straight forward and simple. I would recommend going to lecture because she remembers faces. So if you don't know an answer on the "final exam" she will literally tell you.
I'm at math major and I usually hate English classes. That being said Anja is without a doubt my favorite professor i have ever had. Her lectures are spent are spent pondering interesting moral questions and giving life lessons. Grading is very easy. Highly recommend
At first, I wasn't sure I wanted to take this class. After I finished it, it's one of my favorite classes I've ever taken. She is an amazing professor. Take this class if you need it!!! You will be very happy you did!
Professor Jovic-Humphrey is an awesome professor. She is caring, helpful, and wants to make genuine connections with her students. Though she is super laid-back and jokes around in her lectures, the lectures are still very informative. She does not assign "busy work." The class is mainly graded on two essays and a presentation.
Anja is easily one of the best professors I have had at UW-Madison. She is very caring and thoughtful and you can tell that she is very passionate about the subject. I recommend taking Engl140 if you need a literature or Comm B credit because the workload is very manageable, the books are interesting, and the lectures are fun to attend!
This is for 248 and 140. She's a really unique person, she's cool, interesting, funny, and she has really unique ideas and thoughts about life. Take her classes if you want to invest time in coming to lectures; that was the biggest benefit for me - they impacted me in making my life better beyond any grades or credits.
Amazing; prob my favorite prof at UW. Kind, funny, engaging. Her class doesn't feel like a traditional English class but instead an open space using ideas in readings to talk about art, philosophy, social issues, how we live life, & more. Lots of freedom in written assignments. Take honors if you can: more freedom, great discussion, no extra work.
Anja is the sweetest, kindest professor I have ever had in so many years. She cares about her students and recognizes every student who come to her class. For the most part, her lectures are engaging and during her discussion, she likes to hear every student's thoughts and opinions on the topics being covered. Highly recommend her for English!
Professor Jovic-Humphrey is a unique professor who actually cares about her students! Her lectures are usually interesting and inspirational as well. During discussion, she is super friendly and open-minded! Highly recommend her as a professor!
Highly recommend taking a class with her, she obviously cares a lot about her students and provides a lot of support.
This class was incredibly fun and I found myself more engaged than I was expecting to be. The lectures were compelling and thoughtful, and the reading wasn't excessive. Participation and clear effort matters. When Dr. Jovic-Humphrey says she wants to hear your thoughts, it turns out she really means it.
Wonderful professor, hilarious material. Take this class!
This is actually for Eng 100 but she was extremely nice and the best English teacher I ever met.
she's the nicest person ever! I want her as a professor again she's the best. she's so funny and kind and you can really tell she likes her job. her personality is also golden and she is so interesting!!!! TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU CAN!!!!!!!
Read high-quality literature, have only 3 writing assignments, and be treated like a human being by both Professor and TA. Whats not to like? Professor cares, she really does.
She is amazing! I took an honors course with her and it was super easy yet still extremely valuable. She is so, so kind. Easy A if you put in a little effort. She is a gem of a professor and genuinely cares about her students.
She was AMAZING!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed her class and everything that I learned from it. There are multiple books that you read pretty fast but most of them I liked. Her essays were not difficult at all and there was one where you could do a project instead of an essay. She really appreciates all her students and makes you feel valued.
All you have to do is show up to discussion and participate (I was able to participate pretty easily even without reading the book assigned), and write two papers. For a Comm B class, this one was very easy. And Anja was incredible, passionate, and ridiculously smart. Highly recommend any class she teaches.
Loved this class, and her! Seems passionate about the material and her recorded lectures are soothing. She posts weekly modules with a warm-up, lecture, reminders for the discussion section, and a reflection. There are two papers and 1 project. This is definitely a class that is not too hard to do well in. Would recommend for a gen-ed!
10/10, such an amazing professor/instructor. Her discussion classes are very insightful and I can't her classes less.
I took the course this summer by accident - I wish they called it "humor and comedy." I do creative writing, and at first I thought - how much is there to say about humor-writing? - but this course was really eye-opening. The Prof was hands-on and tracked our progress every week in the gradebook, which I appreciated. The lectures were awesome!
Anja is the sweetest professor you will ever meet. My only complaint is that the semester ended a week ago and I have zero grades handed back to me for this test, which has made me nervous. The books are interesting and she incorporates outside material into the lectures when appropriate.
Anja is one of the best professors I have ever had! She was so sweet, and really cared about all her students in the lecture and discussion. She focused more on our own journey through literature instead of just doing stuff to pass the class which was wonderful. Definitely recommend!
Very open, caring and personable professor, if you make time for her she will make time for you, and is very accommodating. Although 140 is listed as an elementary class, I felt thoroughly challenged by the readings and the final analytical paper, so I will say that her class takes effort. Overall, I had a great experience with Dr. Anja!
Amazing. Profound. Lovely. Incredible. Best professor I have ever had and ever met.
Anja is a straight gem. The entire course is reading the books and listening to her talk about profound, incredible insights she has about life that relates to book and she's a dawg; very nice lady, passionate, and funny. You don't need to read. Two papers, a creative project, and a test, all easy af. Easiest and most interesting class I've taken.
Super sweet professor! Sometimes she was scatter-brain during lecture but always had good content to go over. She makes you read a lot but it is a lit class so what do you expect. She chooses good books to read at least. Discussion attendance is mandatory but not lecture.
She is an interesting person full of intriguing ideas. Assigns a lot of reading but choose things that are enjoyable. Overall I highly recommend her as a professor.
Anja was a great professor and really cares about her students! There was a ton of reading for the course, but not many assignments which made it easier to handle. The amount of reading is the only thing that made the class challenging, in my opinion.
She's the best of the english teachers at Madison, in my opinion. Caring, passionate, and funny as well. If you get the chance, I highly recommend you take her class.
Engaging professor, she connects the books we read with contemporary issues so the books are never boring. Her discussion sections are helpful and thought-provoking.
Perhaps other professors can teach how to read/write better than Anja, but Anja is the best at making people passionate about English. Fun class, LOTS of reading but still overall easy. I would focus on choosing a good TA since I think they grade the papers. Would highly recommend.
Anja is very nice and cares about the material she teaches, only 3 papers and a final exam
I absolutely loved English 167, not just because of the great literature I've always wanted to read, but especially because of Professor Jovic's teaching. She is a very caring and invested individual, who made our 3 hour night lecture more bearable. I heavily appreciated her teaching/lectures, she is my favorite professor at UW Madison.
I took this class to fulfil a lit requirement and I was completely blown away by it. The professor said she wanted to give us intrinsic (as opposed to extrinsic) motivation, and she really succeeded in doing this. She managed to say something really profound about life (and not just books) in pretty much every lecture.
There were 9 assigned books for the semester, and most of them were easy to get through. Anja fostered good discussions and is kind, understanding, and laid back. The course is graded on a 12 page midterm paper, a creative project, a 12-15 page final paper, and participation. Students were given a lot of freedom in their work.
