His lectures are very similar to the readings which makes them repetitive. The grading distribution for this class is very frustrating (percentile ranking) which makes it hard to know where you stand. (percentiles are only posted after the first midterm). I would take it again, but skip the readings in favor or attending lecture and section.
Lectures are unnecessary towards the exams, but some of them were interesting. Homework and exams were super hard for no reason. He makes the grading super complicated as it's based off of quizzes, homework, participation, exams, and then extra credit points. He 100% relies on TAs to teach the vast majority of the content that appears on the exams.
Pretty engaging lectures and very manageable in terms of homework. By no means was this class easy but if you go to lecture and study you should be fine. Finished with an AB even after averaging around a 75 on each exam so the curve is pretty generous.
Professor Sorensen is a great lecturer. They were engaging and entertaining. My only complaint is he doesn't go in depth into the mathematical concepts. He kind of relies on the TA's to do that and the exams are a little more math heavy so I would definitely attend discussion
Excellent lecturer. Explanations of math could be better (relies a bit on TAs to do so), but overall entertaining and knows how to get people's attention at early morning lectures.
he is a good guy and his lectures make sense, but the homework and tests are so much harder for the class that he teaches. he does not really go into depth about mathematical concepts and just expects the ta's to explain it all.
Professor is awful
Awful, never take his class
I think he's a nice guy. However, Professor Sorensen is not great at explaining abstract econ concepts. His online exams were really difficult because he basically gave us an okay lecture and then expected the TA's to explain everything else. Was not a fan of this course with this professor.
He is a legend. Favorite professor I've had so far! His lectures are fun and engaging. I think he does a poor job explaining the mathematics in lecture so make sure you go to discussion and do practice problems. Exams are slightly difficult but the class is curved so you'll do fine if you put the work in.
This guy is one if the best professors you will ever have regardless of what the class is. This guy does in class games for money and bakes cookies for huge lectures. Oh yeah and he donates money made in class to charities. This guy is da bomb.
Professor Sorensen is an amazing professor. Overall, he's funny, super friendly, and explains the material extremely well. He does write somewhat difficult exams, and he isn't necessarily an easy grader. But if you're diligent and stay on top of things, you'll do well.
Cool guy. Didn't think the class was hard if you went to lecture and took notes.
This class was so difficult. He prides himself on being "tougher" than other professors, which would be ok if he gave us more grading leeway. Some people are here on scholarships and could lose them because of how hard it is to do well in this class. He clearly knows what he's talking about and has interesting lectures, but it was way too stressful
Really nice guy and a great lecturer
He will keep you entertained throughout the whole class
For taking this online, this is a GREAT intro class. Test's weren't easy, but not impossible if you read the book and studied hard. He always found ways to make class fun (not easy in a pandemic), usually by interactive demonstrations and Venmo! Overall, really nice guy and is very knowledgeable and I can tell he really enjoys what he does
Professor Sorenson is definitely a cool guy don't get me wrong but he relied way too heavily on the TA's to teach the math portion of the class and in my opinion, my TA did a terrible job. In his lectures, he talks about economics in the real world and never what it is really on the tests. This class is the survival of the fittest.
The dude is awesome. Literally gave students money, cookies and had a twinkie eating contest to show different concepts. Weekly quizzes of 5 questions, easy. 2 midterms, and cumulative final. Tests get harder if people are doing well. Only 5-6 medium-length homework assignments. Textbook is helpful, but readings aren't mandatory.
Sorensen is by far one of my favorite professors. He did a great job of keeping class interesting even in an online environment. Econ can be a difficult topic to comprehend but he does a great job giving relatable examples and getting the class involved. He also gives plenty extra credit opportunities. Definitely need to go to all the lectures.
class is taken on a curve so it's not hard to get a good grade if you put in work. discussion now mandatory except the problems in them are much like the exams. alan is the BEST!!! so funny and smart and sooooo cute always went to lecture just to make sure I'd see him
Probably one of my favorite professors. Fair exams. Homework is graded on effort and completion. Attend discussion and put in the work or you won't succeed, but he doesn't ask too much of his students. Holds excellent office hours. I would take another econ class with Dr. Sorensen in a heartbeat and I am a neurobio and social welfare major!
Alan is amazing. If you go to lecture and complete the quizzes/homework assignments you will not fail. If you get lower than a C in Alan's class then you clearly weren't trying. His lectures are really interesting and he does fun games and top hat activities to make things engaging and applicable! My fav professor this semester I will miss this guy
He is a pretty chill guy. Microeconomics is a pretty difficult concept, but he does a pretty good job at teaching it to someone who does not have a background in econ. Overall pretty challenging class, but the curve is really nice.
Prof Sorensen was my favorite professor this semester. He made power lectures worth going to in the A.M and clearly knew what he was doing. Even though he knew it so well, he explained the basic concepts very clearly. Its a simple structured class. He also showed us his dog during live lectures during quarantine. Would take a class of his again.
Alan is amazing, I actually really enjoyed Econ with him! He does use TopHat for a grade and there's about 8 homework assignments the whole semester. I would really recommend Alan, he's super funny and does lots of fun activities during class and even ends up paying different students if they win a game! Alan is such a gem, I'll miss him.
explains concepts using fun examples and games, you might end up earning from attending class lmao I'm a comp sci major who had no interest in economics prior to this class but I'm most probably taking 102 because of alan
The class is doable if you go to lecture and especially discussion. The TA's are super helpful and really know how to explain problems well. In lecture he doesn't go over everything which can make the class more challenging. Make sure you go to discussion and ask for extra help from TA's if you want to do well. The midterms are pretty challenging.
Very solid professor, anyone trying to bash him is tripping. There's also plenty of TA help available. If you don't get at least a C in this class you need to sell your Xbox bro. I'm not that smart, and a B was attainable through going to lecture and doing my homework. Get TA help once in a while on things you're uncertain of and you'll get an A.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Lectures are pointless because he won't teach the material so that students can understand it. Goes off on tangents, doesn't do examples in class. I had to hire a private tutor to pass this class, and I'm not lazy or stupid. Exams are impossibly hard and count for 60% of the grade. Don't take his class!
Makes lectures fun. Explains things will
He was my favorite teacher this semester because he was very organized, humorous, and understanding. He clearly knows what hes talking about yet explains the key concepts of econ101 in a really good way for people who have no Econ experience. His midterms are worth a lot, so its important to do practice tests and go to review sessions. Easy hw.
Prof. Sorensen is a really good guy and he clearly loves economics and teaching students. He makes lectures as fun as they can be for a topic that gets pretty boring. The class is strongly based on the 3 exams, but make sure you do the homework and quizzes for cushion points. Class based on a heavy curve, so don't stress too much.
Alan was a really good professor. He made lectures really fun and engaging by using different hands-on experiences to explain concepts. He uses TopHat multiple times each lecture and it counts for 5% of the grade. Overall, he makes econ more interesting than I thought it ever would be. Discussions are optional.
Alan is a great professor. I was undecided about my major so I decided to give Econ 101 a shot. Everyone says that microeconomics is super boring and tedious. Alan made it fun. His lectures are clear and straightforward, and he throws in occasional humor to lighten the mood. Overall, he is always accessible and is the reason I now love Econ.
Prof Sorensen is by far the best professor I've had at UW. His lectures are interesting and useful. He has fun in-class demonstrations to help illustrate the concepts that we are learning. He is very helpful when you go into office hours. A lot of people struggle with the concepts of 101 but he approaches them in a very easy to understand way.
This guy is one of my favorite professors on campus. His bro level is a solid 1010 and he knows the material inside and out. He is great at getting the message across and will go out of his way to help you succeed. I'd catch him working out at the Nat some days and he's willing to chat about anything and is honestly a very friendly character.
He is really understanding of the heavy coursework in other classes. I did not go to discussion sections at all because his lectures were so helpful. Exams are fair and curves are very generous.
Great, clear lectures. Manages to keep things interesting most of the time. He is very keen to help and his lectures are actually fun to attend.
I was apprehensive to take this class. However, I loved going to his lectures. Sorensen keeps things interesting and has a good sense of humor. Read textbook to clarify lecture. Exams are challenging, especially since Sorensen doesn't do many problems in class (more overview) so do the practice exams.
Good professor. Was willing to explain content to students very well and keep class interesting. Overall, I would recommend.
His slides are really clear and contain the most important information might be tested by the exam. I haven't even touched my textbook once for the whole semester. As long as you attend the lecture or watched the review the lecture slide, you can easily get an A for this course.
As an aspiring business major I found his lectures particularly interesting. Textbook really isn't required and very very little work outside of class. Took a normally challenging class and made it easy to understand.
Very good professor, simply just a hard topic/very thorough.
Harder than any other econ 101 professor. More math based than concept based unlike the other econ 101 classes. You get participation points from using an iClicker in class so if you don't show up, you don't get the points. I suggest choosing a different professor.
Sorensen is a great professor and he is very good at explaining things with real world applications. Tests are not bad if you study the practice tests. Textbook is useless unless you're looking up something you don't get on the practice exams (or just use google). Discussions are optional but only helpful if you have a good TA.
Prof Sorensen explains all the conceptual information about Econ really clearly. The plus side is you understand everything but at the same time the Midterms are all based on problems he doesn't go over in class. If you go in understanding you need to study the homework and worksheets given out in discussion, you should be fine.
Feels like a 101 class, the information is basic, as are his examples from class. Generally, tests aren't too bad but he only gives the top 15% A's which sucks.
Explains concepts well. Uses some good (though trivial) examples to show the points of his teaching. Class so far is easier (or at least slower) than what I have heard for Korinna Hansen's section. Prof. Sorensen has his bad moments, but overall is a good teacher for an introductory economics course.
He is one of my favorite professors Super funny and He teaches pretty clearly and if you go to every lecture and do the practice exam you will nail the exam
Lectures are pretty clear. For those who are interested in economics and like challenges, it is a good way to start into econ.
Professor Sorensen's lectures are very clear and straightforward. However, he only teaches the definitions and meanings of specific economic concepts, and the exams are all about calculating numbers from these concepts. You are never taught how to do this. Discussion isn't very helpful either. Read the textbook!
Horrible professor. If you want to have political opinions shoved down your throat the entire lecture take this class! Rude when emailing.
Great professor, great personality, always able to help!!!
His lecture is really interesting and he's such a great person!
Such a smart man, and he really knows what he is talking about. His lectures were interesting, and he explained general concepts, instead of teaching to the test. But the tests were manageable and the curve ALWAYS helped a ton. I liked him a lot, easy to get a B in. TAs in the econ department are awesome.
The exams weren't bad at all if you're decent at math. I usually started studying about 2 days before the exam. He made the lectures really interesting, however they gave a more general overview of the material rather than showing examples of how to solve exam questions. Do the practice exams, then ask TA/prof how to do anything u don't understand
Horrible class, horrible professor. Nothing he teaches in the class corresponds to anything that is on the exams. Exams are pretty much impossible and he doesn't prepare you well for them at all. He provides no examples in class so you never really understand the concepts well enough to be able to apply them on the exams. DO NOT take this professor
His lectures don't really help prepare you for tests. Reading the book helps a little. In the end, he still made the final easy, which helped a lot. He is a good person, but his class isn't very helpful.
I really enjoyed his lectures. He is chill. He uses lots of fun examples to let you grasp the definitions better. However, if you wanna kick ass in this class, you are gonna read the textbook and do every homework, discussion handout and practice exam. It's kind of an easy-A (it should be), but you still need to work on it.
Knows what he's talking about but doesn't take an interest for us to really grasp the concepts, but his tests are really hard even for being multiple choice, grade is on a curve, posts online powerpoints
Interesting professor; he definitely understands what he's talking about. Not helpful with class material. The tests are impossible. I suggest hiring a private tutor to pass this class.
He is definitely a "fun" professor but he doesn't teach anything during class. He spends too much time trying to be a "cool" professor that he doesn't actually get the concepts across. Make sure you understand all definitions of words before class because he only flashes them up for couple seconds and then never repeats the definitions again.
Great professor. Got his PHD from MIT so he is pretty much a genius. He knows exactly what he is talking about. Lectures are very engaging and worth while. Tests are not really like the homework they are instead a lot harder. Take him if you can.
He's a funny guy and his lectures are entertaining but the lectures DO NOT teach you anything at all.He does no examples and expects you to teach yourself. If you can do that then the test's not too hard. He basically just gives a bunch of definitions. The TAs are helpful but he goes over stuff fast so it's hard to fit everything into discussion.
I like him so far. I heard he is from Stanford. I trust him.
