Gives very informative lectures with a few jokes sprinkled in. Quiz questions are taken from a bank of questions which is available ahead of time. Overall, a very solid choice.
Graded on Midterm, Final, and one paper. Exam questions taken from study question test bank. Reading, study material, and lectures are useful. Professor Carroll is very nice, funny, and very approachable. Highly Reccomend
I love his dry humor. He is a cool guy and its an easy A. He wrote his own book for the class and he threw some jokes in it. Love him.
Pretty funny guy and his lectures are easy to follow. You're only graded on two exams and weekly quizzes that you get two attempts on. There's a lot of material to memorize, but it's a super simple class and relatively little work to be done. No homework.
Fine professor, nice guy and pretty funny, lot of G rated humor. Knows his material. Only grades are tests (make sure to review for tests), once a week multiple choice online quizzes you get two attempts at, and class participation via TopHat. Easy to fall asleep in lecture but you don't miss much. Blow-off class
Tries to put humor into his lectures. Really interested in what he is teaching.
He is actually hilarious which I didn't expect for a Geosci class. No homework. Readings are like 15 pages per week of a book written by him which has the best jokes in it. Definitely take this class. You won't regret it.
Alan is hip and happening keeping things in geosci 100 always interesting as long as he avoids the subject of geology. Seems like a chill bro, but let's face it who cares about rocks? Not me, not you, not anyone ever. Except Alan, but not really cause even he realizes that geology is drier than porous rocks. He's a laugh but geology is for nerds.
Not too hard if you study. He's actually hilarious if you're paying attention. I consistently laugh in class. The tests aren't too hard, and he is pretty lenient about disputing test answers if you talk to him -- I got my first exam grade changed b/c of question wording/ambiguity. Not really sure why we have discussion, but not too bad of a class.
Sarcastic and makes funny references for students which makes his dry lectures somewhat amusing. However, not a clear professor--goes on tangents and mumbles a lot. What bothers me most are his explanations. He literally explains EVERYTHING on his chalkboard though pictures that make absolutely no sense. Difficult for a "rocks for jocks" course...
The coolest guy in UW-Madison. The funniest guy in UW-Madison. Easy class...he posts a test bank before the 2 tests in the class from which he chooses questions. You get 2 attempts on the quizzes; after the 1st attempt it shows what answers you got wrong, so there is no excuse to not get a 100 on the 2nd attempt at the same quiz.
Interesting lectures with the occasional joke thrown in... and he's actually funny. Easy exams & even easier weekly quizzes.
Does the best he can with an extremely boring class, his lectures get boring and you will fall asleep sooner or later. He does make some good drinking references and makes things very clear if they are going to be on the test. If you go to class and just write down whatever he writes on the board and you will easily receive at least a B
Ridiculously laid-back guy, easy and interesting class. Exam questions posted online before multiple choice tests.
If you can stay awake (and hear him!) he is interesting. Very clear. talks about drinking alot, which seems to bring the class out of its trance
Geo 100 is generally an easy class. Carroll isn't the best prof though. His lectures arn't very well structured, although he does post outlines online. His lectures about oil and energy were interesting though as he used to work in the industry. I never took a mid term written by Carrol as my class was team taught with Prof Valley.
HORRIBLE WORST CLASS EVER WORST TEACHER DO NOT TAKE
This guy is boring, you can't understand. he mumbles in a valley girl accent, and tries to keep your attention by constantly referencing drinking. Makes some interesting points, but bring other homework to class.
He's a good prof, knows his stuff and never boring. He's quirky which will keep you awake in class, but a harder grader on tests than any of us expected. Be careful to remember the things he says, as he does expect you to remember a lot of it, but don't worry it all relates in the end.
The lectures are easy and he is a very entertaining person--he'll quote Ferris Bueller, talk about the 70's, etc. Lab and discussion is a bit more difficult and inconsistent with lecture, but it's a good science class for non-science people.
