Fantastic guy. Seemed like he really cared, easily the best professor I've ever had.
The best professor I've had at UW so far. He is so kind and overall an amazing guy! His office hours were super helpful. However, taking his class and then going into the "quad" of professors for 345 (since he doesn't teach 345) was a big adjustment, so be aware of that, but regardless I think it is worth it to have him teach 343
Proof Boydston is amazing. He is great at explaining concepts. His tests are more conceptual which I appreciate. He once got everyone donuts to celebrate cyclohexanes and our test scores. He also hosts office hours sometimes before exams over the weekends which were super helpful! I cannot recommend this professor enough truly the best!!
I love Boydston so much. Genuinely one of the most caring professor's I've ever had. He really wants his students to do well. Hard material but he explained everything really well and put it all in simpler terms.
Although I hated/hate chemistry, Boydston was always prepared for class, made lectures interesting and engaging and found ways to explain topics clearly and concisely. I think he's a great professor regardless of my own abilities in Chem.
Possibly the best professor I have had. Professor Boydston had lots of availability through his office hours and would also answer piazza quite frequently. I especially liked how he made extra office hours closer to the exams to help better prepare. He made me like organic chemistry which is something I never thought I would say.
He is an amazing professor! His grade distributions are high so if you want an A, expect that you are going to have to EARN it. No you really cannot rely on a curve because its like 1%. Exam material is very well represented by lecture. I would recommend skimming the textbook (but its not required at all) and go to office hours!
Such a great professor!! Chem343 is a hard class but he is a great lecturer! He hosts tons of Office Hours and you can tell he cares for his students. One of my favorite professors I have ever had.
Dr. Boydston is the best professor I have ever had in college! He is so dedicated to teaching students and truly cares about the well-being of his students. He makes himself very accessible outside of class. Exams are fair and very few unexpected questions. Highly recommend!!!!!
One of the best professors I have had. While the content is hard, he delivered it in a way that made it digestible. No busy work. He cares so much about his students, it really shows through the amount of time he puts aside for office hours. highly recommend.
One of the best professors I've ever had, made things easy to learn.
He is genuinely the best professor I've ever had. He is kind, attentive to students with questions, and an amazing lecturer. He made me remember that higher level chemistry can be cool when taught properly. I genuinely enjoyed going to class.
He is genuinely one of the best professors I've ever had. Simply an amazing teacher and a kind and helpful person. He made organic chemistry so much less daunting than it could have been! Highly recommend.
Prof. Boydston was one of the best professors I've ever had. You can tell that he is passionate about the subject, and relays it in a way that is (in my opinion) easier to understand. Don't get me wrong, the course is still hard, but he is kind, understanding and very available outside of lectures if you need help. No extra busy work. 10/10
If you are signed up for Boydston, you made the right decision and you won't regret it. He is the KINDEST prof I have ever had. How is this man real. Other comments have said his exams are like worksheets but I disagree. The first exam was, but the next two were tough. He is very available outside of class and had 3 office hour times per week.
Chem 343 is a difficult course, but having Professor Boydston teaching it made this experience much more enjoyable. It is clear that he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He was accessible outside of class to answer questions and was always eager to help. If you have to take Chem 343, take it with him!
It is easy to see how much Boynton cares for his students. He has multiple office hours throughout the week and makes himself very available to students. He is one of the best, if not the best Ochem professors at UW. I would definitely recommend.
Prof Boydston is one of the kindest professors i've had the opportunity to learn from. He allows SO MUCH TIME for office hours and answering questions. Prof Boydston represents the ideal Professor, he represents UW Madison in the highest light, and he is genuinely the best professor (in my opinion) that a student could learn from. Take him!
Organic chemistry is hard, but Boydston makes it a bit more bearable. He is extremely caring and clearly works toward student success. The material itself is difficult, but attending his lectures (either in person or recorded) and putting in effort helps tremendously. If you are worried about this class, take Boydston!
Boydston was amazing! I would 100% recommend for Chem 343. He is so interactive and goes out of his way to help his students succeed!
Taking chem 343 with professor boydston was overall a good experience. He is very clear and honest about what is expected and he is willing to go above and beyond to try to help you learn. The content is hard and the final grade is only based on exams which is not fun.
Amazing professor!! I am in no way good at chemistry but he is so easy to access for office hours and is a great teacher! I was super scared to take this class but he made it a lot easier than i was expecting and I would 100% take him again
Professor Boydston is a prime example of what an excellent professor is. He is caring, direct, accessible, and passionate about chemistry. His lectures are very well organized and he is very supportive. His character shines through his humor and his love for his dogs. He is an amazing lecturer and his care for his students' success is obvious.
Chem 343 is a hard class no matter who you take, but I really enjoyed Prof Boydston! He grades his class off of 3 exams, 3 take-home quizzes, and one final, all exams are technically cumulative. He allows for a notecard on exams and he is super easy to reach if you need extra help/have questions! I felt like he genuinely wanted us to do well
Ochem is hard, but AJ is never condescending and holds office hours frequently, even coming in on Saturdays to offer additional help with tricky topics. He brought in his dogs once and got the entire class Greenbush doughnuts. He can be funny, too, making so many jokes in lecture to lighten the mood after a tough exam. We just had to smile.
Hands down one of the best professors I've had. Exams are straightforward and basically straight from lecture examples. For the first exam, I felt like I was doing a worksheet. He is a fair grader and I would 100% take him again.
Perhaps the best professor I had in my time at Madison. Super caring and understanding and loves meeting with students outside of class and working with them one-on-one. Very approachable and responds to emails very quickly. Take AJ for Chem 343!
Great guy but average professor. Tried to make a lot of things easier than they should be (online tests, retakes, etc.), but it ended up encouraging cheating and making the average much higher than it should be. Teaches concepts differently from the OChem trio, which makes it difficult for students to go from 343 to 344/345.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Super accessible outside of class and always wants to see students succeed. Very understanding that we're all students and wanted to make class interesting and engaging. Still a very challenging class but definitely fair. He's also very knowledgeable about course material. Cannot recommend Boydston enough.
Possibly the most down-to-earth and understanding prof I've had. Really cares about student success and knows o chem is challenging. Can talk fast at some points, but definitely makes himself available outside of class to answer any questions. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him or take another class with him!
Professor Boydston will forever be my favorite professor at UW. It is organic chemistry so it will be difficult but he makes it a lot more enjoyable. I suffered way less than my friends who had other professors. He gives you opportunities to increase your grade and also has super cute dogs!!
Professor Boydston is one of the nicest professors I've had. He is funny, caring, and very smart. He keeps lectures interesting and I would definitely recommend taking his class.
Hands down one of the best professors I've had at UW. He has lots of office hours and is very willing to help you outside of class. I found his lectures to be extremely useful because he explains organic chemistry in a way that we understand clearly. The lectures are interactive since we encourages us to ask questions. Boydston is the best!
Best professor at UW. OChem is hard but he made it easy to learn and his exams were not difficult if you practiced. He would never try to trick you on exams and he provides a lot of practice on canvas page. Was never stressed throughout the semester because he had great communication. Brought his dogs to campus, surprised us with other fun things!
Professor Boydston is hands down the best professor I have ever had. Organic chemistry is difficult but he made it so simple to understand. He held office hours almost every day and would meet outside of them if they didn't work for you. He makes sure to emphasize that he cares about students actually learning organic chemistry.
I never say this about any Professor. Boydston is unbelievable. He is the greatest professors Ive ever had in my life. He deserves nothing less that 5 stars in every rating because everyone in the class is aware of just how incredible he is. He is a very fair teacher. The exams were not made to trick u. He will let you to love Organic Chemistry.
He's an angel. I'm not even being sarcastic like he's such an incredible and kind human. He made my OCHEM experience so memorable and I would recommend him to anyone. Probably, one of the best professors at UW. So understanding and wants everyone to succeed. Please take him or else you will miss out.
Really cares about the well-being of his students. He has many office hours and wants to see students succeed. Very nice and forgiving guy.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! He is accessible outside of class and really cares about not only getting his students to understand the material but also making sure they feel comfortable asking questions. He has so many office hours to help aid in understanding and actually took the time to learn a lot of our names too, which made class feel so personal :).
Professor clearly wants students to do well, he offers tons of help throughout the course and even offers a retake exam to completely replace your lowest exam. Ochem will always be a difficult subject no matter who's teaching it, but he made it the most enjoyable, least stressful Ochem class I could ever imagine.
Best professor Ive had at UW. Cares so much about his students and is extremely accommodating. So crazy smart but such a good lecturer, makes the material easy to understand and it very straightforward and clear of what he expects. Cried on the last day of lecture. Most fair and best professor Ive ever ever had.
Although ochem is very very hard, Boydston is the most caring and understanding prof I've ever had. He really tries to accommodate to his students' needs and truly cares and wants you to succeed. He gives plenty of opportunities to make up for "bad days" and really wants students to actually learn the material and do their best. 10000/10
best professor to take on campus. No one matches his understanding and his style of teaching. He explains things as best as he can and helps you when you ask for it. He understands ochem is hard and does his best to explain things in ways we understand. Super caring and an overall amazing professor. No one can match this mans kindness and souls.
Lack of communication from Boydston makes somethings difficult.
boydston is an absolute beauty. he understands that the class is hard, especially being online. he just wants you to learn the material so he offers a 4th exam to replace the lowest exam score. truly passionate about his students learning and is always available for extra help and questions. Take boydston to have a good ochem experience
Boydston is probably the best professor I've ever had at UW! He understands the struggles that come along with a hard class like OCHEM and he does his best to help you out. Also was very flexible and understanding with an online format of class. I will never recommend a prof as much as I do Boydston.
The gratitude I have for this professor is truly beyond words. I have never met anyone more understanding than he has been throughout COVID. He gave us endless opportunities for extra credit and quiz replacements. Not to mention the replacement exam! He is so kind and forgiving and I would take his class again without a doubt. 1000% would recommend
Literally no prof was as caring and accommodating as this man was during COVID. Even after semester ended, he said if we ever wanted to meet his dogs he'd have them in office hours next semester. He truly cares about his students success and gave us so many opportunities and extra credit to learn better and excel in his class. Amazing guy overall.
Professor Boydston is hands down the best professor you could ask for when it comes to O Chem. He provided countless opportunities for students to receive extra credit and was very accomodating. He understands that O Chem is a challenging course and did a great job making the material more approachable. I will forever be in debt to Prof. Boydston.
Prof Boydston is hands down the most caring professor I've had at UW-Madison. He is so understanding and updated his syllabus to reflect this crazy time during the pandemic. He had super accessible office hours and truly wanted to help his students. There were three exams, along with an optional fourth retake exam. Highly recommend!!
Professor Boydston is one of the best professors at UW Madison. He truly cares about his students and his lectures are terrific. Take him if you can. You will not regret it.
Prof. Boydston was really flexible with his class, especially for it being online. He genuinely cares if his students understand the material. He doesn't try to be tricky on exams and is very straight forward. Overall, he is a great professor! If you have the chance to take one of his classes, do it!
He truly wants his students to learn the material. He understood that online learning is difficult and adapted his syllabus to reflect. There are three exams worth 15% and a final worth 20%. The exams are take-home (but very in-depth questions), but he allows you to retake one of the three to replace your worst one. A very smart and forgiving guy.
I had Professor Boydston for my Chem 109 H class, and he is an amazing instructor. I struggled a lot in the beginning, but he was always available during and outside class including office hours. He tries his best to provide supports based on students' needs. I would definitely take his class again, and he genuinely cares about his students.
I had Boydston for the honors section of Chem 109 (curriculum more focused on conceptual understanding and applied problems). Class moves fast but Boydston is a clear lecturer and fair with grading. He wants students to do well and holds productive office hours sessions. Helps to have a good TA and a strong background in chemistry from high school.
