  • Discuss cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options with pet owners in a clear, empathetic, and professional manner.

  • Practice communication and teamwork with veterinarians, technicians, and hospital staff to ensure coordinated patient care.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of foundational oncology concepts, including how tumor biology influences diagnostic choices, therapeutic options, and prognosis.

  • Explain the range of treatment options available for pets with cancer and the factors that influence how treatment decisions are made.

Cancer affects an estimated one in four companion animals, making a solid foundation in oncology essential for veterinarians entering small animal practice. Gain the knowledge and skills necessary to approach the management of animals with cancer from initial presentation and diagnosis through treatment planning and delivery always in alignment with the goals of the pet owner. Refine core clinical skills including physical restraint, physical examination, venipuncture and blood sampling, fine needle aspiration, and effective client communication. Participate in diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making and practice the clinical reasoning processes fundamental to oncology.
