What you’ll be able to do

• Develop an evidenced-based understanding of the pathophysiology and appropriate management options for common surgical disorders.

• Discuss the surgical anatomy, common procedural indications, comorbidities, and prophylactic strategies to reduce post-operative complications.

• Demonstrate basic knowledge regarding common post-operative complications and the appropriate management of each.

• Describe indications and list the appropriate preoperative evaluations including lab tests, radiographic imaging, and ECG.

• Identify and describe use of common instruments used in surgery.

• Discuss common intraoperative complications associated with procedures and the appropriate management of each.

• Gather a history and perform a physical examination for a surgical patient

• Prioritize a differential diagnosis following a clinical encounter

• Recommend and interpret common diagnostic and screening tests

• Enter and discuss patient orders

• Document a clinical encounter in the patient record

• Provide an oral presentation of a clinical encounter

• Form clinical questions and retrieve evidence to advance patient care

• Give or receive a patient handover to transition care responsibility

• Collaborate as a member of an interprofessional team

• Recognize a patient requiring urgent or emergent care and initiate evaluation and management

• Obtain informed consent for tests and/or procedures

• Perform general procedures of a physician

• Identify system failures and contribute to a culture of safety and improvement

• Demonstrate the importance of compassion, integrity, and respect during interactions with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.

• Demonstrate respect for patient privacy and autonomy.

• Take responsibility for accomplishing assigned tasks in an effective and punctual manner.

• Advance patient-centered communication skills to effectively convey healthcare information to patients and families.

• Contribute to the healthcare team objective through effective verbal and written communication that is timely, thorough, and accurate.

• Demonstrate the importance of effectively obtaining informed consent.

• Demonstrate an understanding of the interaction of multiple systems – hospitals, insurance carriers, government agencies - that contribute to and impact the provision of healthcare.

• Recognize the limitations and potential pitfalls of the team approach to healthcare as a leading cause of preventable patient harm (e.g., hand-offs, miscommunication).

• Recognize the importance of cost-effective healthcare to patients, institutions, and society.

• Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning by using evidence-based resources to better understand the condition and treatment of patients under your care.

• Use instructional feedback from the faculty, residents, and healthcare professionals as a tool to improve performance.
