What you’ll be able to do

  • Describe the speech sounds of Spanish using articulatory/anatomical features of speech organs and their phonological organization using proper terms and conventions in phonetics and phonology.

  • Produce intermediate level phonetic transcriptions of controlled texts using phonetic symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

  • Apply knowledge of phonetics to improve listening comprehension, accuracy in pronunciation, spelling and accentuation.

  • Explain differences between varieties of Spanish, defined regionally, socially or contextually, based on phonetic characteristics of certain speech sounds.

  • Value how speaker intuitions and production and perception of speech sounds may inform linguistic research.
